Day Three On Survivor

 Florida Cat

Last night the almost unheard of happened. Both Jack and Maurice slept with me. There was no hissing, no screaming, no mewling, no clawing or biting.
I was almost afraid to breathe.
It was sweet. And a little scary.

Today was a day to do things I've been putting off. Well, a minuscule number of those things. And they were pretty minuscule things too. It wasn't like I wrote a will or cleaned out a closet or anything. But I did get some packages mailed and just the fact that I even got them ready to mail is rather huge. I also signed a document I was supposed to sign and put that in an envelope and I'll mail it tomorrow. I filled out the forms that my surgeon's office sent me to bring in when I go for my follow-up appointment next week. I hate filling out medical forms almost as much as I hate going to a doctor. So all of that is done.
"All of that." Haha!
I didn't go for a walk exactly although I did walk to the post office. Hardly far enough to count. But I saw some things.

The beauty berry is just crazy this year. So much of it!

And each separate cluster is so fine and fat.

The firespike I've rooted and planted by the front fence is obviously very happy. I'm itching to root some more but I really don't have any place I want to plant it.

And here's another confederate rose bloom.

It looks very much like the picture of one I took on my walk a few weeks ago but this one is IN MY YARD which makes it different. Right?

I watered the porch plants. That takes about three minutes with the hose.

And I made a cake. I do not know why I made a cake. I haven't made a cake for no reason in ages and ages. But I felt completely compelled. It is a flat cake. I made about 2/3's of the recipe so my layers are thin. Also, it's not a very fluffy cake. It's a sort of hummingbird cake which has banana and pineapple and pecans in it and I added coconut too. Why not? I had some leftover from Mr. Moon's pie. Then I made a seven-minute frosting and when that was all done, I ate a piece!
I'm just going crazy here.

I went out to the garden to pick some basil and took a basket in case I decided to pick some peppers.
Holy shit.

Obviously I gathered eggs as well.

I sent Mr. Moon a picture.
"More pepper jelly?" he texted back.
"I'm out of sugar," I told him.

I have no idea what I'm going to do with those peppers. I do not think it would be prudent to be hefting a canning kettle filled with water right now. But on a purely esthetic level, they give me pleasure just sitting there on the kitchen island in the pretty wooden bowl I bought last year.

I did a few other things today but no one needs to hear about scrubbing toilets.

I sure do wish I had more interesting things to write about this evening.
I feel certain you wish I did too.

Who knows? Maybe I'll have some deep thoughts tomorrow.

Until then...

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. This was just a normal day of activities and so very easy to read about! You are doing so well with hubby being gone!

  2. It was a lovely day's account of small stuff accomplished. It added up, too. I love how you let it unfold.

You often mention going to the post office. How far is that? I mean in minutes elapsed.

The confederate rose is just more authentic in your own yard, definitely.

    1. If I am walking to the post office it takes probably about seven minutes. So- it is very, very close. I do usually walk there unless I'm taking the trash in which case I drive it down to the dump and stop by the PO on my way home. Both are what you would call within a block of my house if we had blocks.

  3. those beauty berries are just so gorgeous. Love your day...and that you baked yourself a cake for *no reason*! HA! when my hubby was last gone......not only did I eat peas and shrimp for 4 days but I also baked myself a cake (chocolate) and made chocolate icing.....(made 1/2 batch so I could polish it off before he came home) LOL (he doesn't eat sugar). You are one wild woman! And both cats on the bed at once? Unheard of

    1. You and I are both wild women, Susan! What's next? Eating crackers in bed?

  5. I have not made seven minute iceing since I was a child. It was my favorite.

    1. It only takes seven minutes! Or so...
It is a very child-friendly frosting. Like gooey marshmallows.

  6. I started IVs all day, not that exciting either. One poor lady was crying because she's dying and her one son won't get vaccinated to keep her safe, so she won't let him visit. A kick in the heart.

The lovely fall weather continues here but the evenings are getting so short which is kind of nice. I find it much easier to sleep when it's dark out.

You are a brave woman sleeping with those two cats. I can't imagine living with two cats who hate each other. And seven minute icing, yum. Haven't had that in years.

    1. I bet you are a world-class IV starter.
You must see and hear about so much sorrow in your job. Can you imagine a son refusing to get vaccinated when he knows that he can't see his dying mother unless he does? I know there are two sides to every story but...
I can't sleep if it's light out at night either. Strangely, I can take naps in the daytime but my room is rather cavelike.
I am a brave woman for sleeping with those cats. Or stupid. I admit it.

  7. I'm wonder how your missing appendix space feels when you clean toilets. In all seriousness, your flower pictures are so beautiful -- I especially love the rose, and every year when you post those purple berries I just CAN NOT GET OVER THEM!

    1. I can't feel any difference at all as regards the missing appendix space. That's sort of odd, isn't it?
Those beauty berries' color knocks me out every year too. You'd think the delight would have faded by now but it hasn't.

  8. No one needs to hear about scrubbing toilets? I disagree. It is always helpful to copy the techniques of a domestic goddess.

    1. I'm pretty sure I scrub toilets the same way most people do. But that was a sweet thing to say, Mr. P. Either that or sarcastic. Which I deserve.

  9. It is just nice to hear about your day. Doesn't need to be deep and meaningful! Your " beauty berries" are doing much better than ours. P bought a couple of plants a year or so ago, as he had seen some in a nearby garden, but they look half dead at the moment! Can't remember what they are called here, but I think it begins with C ! Ah yes, Callicarpa...just looked it up.

    1. For what it's worth, I believe the variety of beautyberry we grow here in the UK is not the same as the Florida variety. (Callicarpa bodinieri vs. Callicarpa americana, I think?)

We have a couple of beautyberry plants in our garden, but the berries are much smaller than on the Florida type.

    2. The ones here also go by the name of "French Mulberry" according to the internet. I can see the color resemblance but otherwise, not much.

  10. Love the "Florida cat" pic. Sometimes it's nice to read about everyday stuff. It's calming. :)

  11. Sometimes just getting one small job done gives you a feeling of satisfaction doesn't it. I know I procrastinate about the stupidest of things sometimes!

    1. I have certain things that I just hate doing. Mailing stuff is one. Which is yes, ridiculous. It feels so good to have done it now.

  12. Don't worry about sharing deep thoughts every day. Some of us don't mind hearing about the more mundane aspects of life now and then. Let's face it, just reading headlines is enough to wear out our brains (and nerve endings) each day. :)

  13. The fabulousness of that berry bush! And the peppers and eggs bowl!! Here's what I've been doing with those bags of peppers I've been buying. Roasting them in the air fryer and then adding vinegar and oil and keeping them in the fridge to eat with everything.

    1. I think I need an air fryer. I may be the only person in America who doesn't have one yet. That sounds like an excellent idea.

  14. I love the photos of what is blooming around you. I have nothing blooming anymore so it is a treat to see the colors around you! I have never heard of 7 minute frosting so I may have to google that.
The photo of the peppers and eggs in the lovely wooden bowl is just fabulous! Thanks for bringing all of this natural beauty into my day!

  15. my beautyberry that I dug up and brought with me from the city is struggling but the volunteer that came up next to it is doing better and while they are on the north side of the house, they get intense summer sun for about 3 or 4 hours and I think it's just too much. no open blooms on my confederate rose yet.

many small things add up to a very productive day.

    1. I think I read that a beauty berry does not come back on the same plant every year but grows up beside it. They do seem to like shade but some sun. Maybe yours ARE getting too much sun. I wonder if your confederate rose will bloom at all this year.

  17. Oh I enjoy those beauty berries every year you post pics. And I'm quite intrigued about what 7 Minute Frosting is. Is it one you have to whip for ages to make less grainy?
