Owen Comes To Grandma's House

A few years ago I figured out that I had given my children approximately ninety or so birthday dinners and I said, "This is it! I am done! You're all grown-up now and don't expect me to throw a big ol' party every time you have a birthday!"

All the children fell on the floor laughing and nothing changed at all.

So last night we had approximately the one hundreth or so birthday celebration at Mama's house and it was a good one and different in every way because Owen was here. He arrived in his car seat, fast asleep, and continued to sleep on the butcher block in the middle of the kitchen for several hours, sleeping through the chopping, the pans banging, the dogs barking, the neighbors coming over to admire him and people saying, "Owen, wake up!"

He sleeps fiercely. As you can see. Even as he slept we admired his long fingers, his cute little pumpkin head, his fuzzy, soft hair.

Finally dinner was ready and everyone was here.

All the kids and Tay-Tay and Grandpa and Grandma and we gathered on the back porch to eat and then, that button on Lily's butt which wakes up the baby when she sits down to eat was activated and Owen woke up and wanted to nurse, which he did, all through supper, all through the trip outside to see the chickens and the fire Granddaddy had built and then through dessert and when they left, he was still crying for more.

This young man does nothing by half-measures. When he sleeps, he sleeps, when he wants the nursies, he WANTS THE NURSIES!!!!
Lily says she's getting a little tired of having her boobies online so I won't post any nursie pictures. Too bad. I have a great one of her blowing out the candles on her key lime pie with Owen at her breast.

Uncle Hank did get a few moments of time holding him and that was pretty sweet. When Owen cries, Uncle Hank says something like, "Ffff, ffff, ffff," and Owen seems to like that. I believe Hank was giving him instructions on some important life lesson when I took this picture:

I barely got to hold him because every time I did, he cried and tried to find the ninny on my arm and when there wasn't one, he became inconsolable and I had to give him back to his mama. Oh well. I did get to change his diaper.

It was a lovely evening, a birthday and birth-day celebration and we all felt as if we had a royal guest in our midst and it was our honor to do his bidding, although of course it was mostly Lily who did his bidding and she is a most gracious mother, a queen of lactation and comfort, a patient and loving mother. She is also beautiful.

I would show you how beautiful but her boobies are exposed in every picture and I'm trying to be respectful. And Jason is her royal consort and Lily admits he's changed more diapers than she has and it seems to me they have the whole thing covered.

Owen's a lucky boy and he has made us a lucky family. Or a luckier family, I suppose I should say.

And one more reason to gather together to eat and laugh and celebrate.

When Jason and Lily and Owen left I told them that perhaps I would come over today to see them to take a nap with Owen.

I think I might need one.

  1. If Lily finds the OFF switch to that button on her butt, the one that triggers the baby to need to nurse as soon as she sits down to eat, could ya let me know? A hot meal would be nice ;-)

WAIT - who am I kidding, if it's not the baby wanting to nurse that causes me to have a lukewarm meal, then it will be the toddler needing something :-) Ahhh well - such is motherhood, right?

  4. Owen is absolutely beautiful! It's going to be no time until he's darting between chair legs at those family dinners.

My own grandson appears to be making his entrance into the world today, a month early.

  5. JustMe- There is no off-switch. We know that. Mr. Moon and I did not eat a meal together from 1985 through about 1995. Sigh.

Ms. Fleur- I didn't mean to but I realized I'd done it after I wrote that.

Steph- Yep. He's a blessing all the way around.

    Marsha- WHAT???
Best wishes that all goes well and that your happiness is unbounded as ours is.

  6. Thank you Ms. Moon. Maybe in a week or so we can both be posting these happy pictures.

I'm still in limbo at the moment...that angst of a place

  8. Sigh, the food looks delicious and the family even more delicious and well, aren't we ALL so blessed by coming here and being part of your life?

  9. I think I say "hush hush hush", but to be honest I don't notice when I'm doing it. It does come out fairly slushy.

  10. My Dear Ms. Moon,
You have the most beautiful family, but I'm sure you know that. Owen is a doll.

    Love you,

    SB

  12. I just have to say that I'm the blessed one because Mama made the most delicious meal last night, (including shrimp, two kinds of fresh guacamole, and key lime pie), and my sister made the cutest baby.

  13. You forgot to say how mean Jessie is now! I forgot about it until I saw her comment. It was lovely last night. Just perfectly lovely.

  14. Marsha- That is the truth. We'll wait to hear.

Ginger- The flautas were delicious. I only make them once a year because they are so deep-fried damn good.

    Kori- Well, y'all bless us.

DTG- It's "ffff-ffff-ffff." I listened. So did Owen.

Ms. Bastard- He's a loud mad doll when someone takes away his delicious ninny.

Palagi Girl- I know I am.

HoneyLuna- I, too, forgot how mean you are! That was funny. You are SO mean to Owen. Stop that!
    (Haha)

May- You were especially lovely, sweet (not mean) girl.

  15. I'm all about the nursies photos because a mom nursing her baby is the most beautiful thing EVER.

  16. Yes, you better quit with the boobie pics or you'll have to put that 'adult content' disclaimer on your blog!
I WANT A(nother) BABY!!!!! Those pictures of Owen are making my ovaries scream. Loud enough to drown out Farty's screaming tantrums (sometimes).

  18. Hem. I was a soother snob with my first and used it for those endless feeding evenings with my second, to get something to eat, a little rest, whatever... get a nice ergonomic one and use it sparingly, it's fine!

  19. Rebecca- I completely agree. But Lily is not quite sure how she feels about this whole new exposure. And yes, that pun I did intend.

Rachel- Hard to ignore the ovaries, isn't it? Sorry, sugar, for making them scream louder.

Ms. Jo- Believe me, we tried. He would accept it for a second and then, after a few fruitless sucks, spit it out.

  20. Oh... what a wonderful family portrait at the table... I wish I were part of your family :( so much love!
And watch Owen's pumpkin head... Halloween's a comin! That's one serious head on such young shoulders.
I feel your heart. My girls are not so much younger than Lily... I long for that little baby to hold and cherish, but I tell them to live their lives and have no regrets... guess I'll have to wait a while longer, but it will be worth it. Your words... I can almost smell and feel his sweetness. Sounds like your beautiful Lily is the earth mother... much like her Mama before her. Love to you all x

  21. Thank you so much mommy! We all hada wonderful time yesterday. It was just good to get out and do something. The food was awesome and the company even better. We love you so much.

  22. Ms. Lilac- I really did not feel a conscious need to have grandchildren. Okay, okay, maybe my continuing love affair with chickens may say something about my SUBconscious desire but I firmly believe that each and every one of my kids will have children of their own IF and WHEN they want. Lily really wanted to and that makes it all the more special. And worth the (subconscious) wait.
You are invited to sit on our porch with us anytime, dear lady.

Lily- You know, y'all can come out to Lloyd and visit and we can take Owen for walks any time you want to get out of the house. Especially while Jason is still at home and you have someone to drive you. I would love that! Soon we can take him to the mall- the mother's distraction- and do all sorts of fun things with the boy.
I love you so much too!

  23. OH, be careful what you say, I'd love to take you up on your offer!... just you might not be able to be rid of me and I may out stay my welcome! x

  24. Ms. Lilac- And you might decide we are all nothing but a band of crazy people. One never knows. I wouldn't worry about such things at this point.

  25. I think you probably have my measure by now... I may never come home! x

  26. That looked like a perfect day - a porch filled with a happy, loving family, delicious food and a beautiful baby boy. Great smiles in the picture too!
Poor Lily, the demands of motherhood are neverending. And Owen seems to be very good at getting what he needs, that will serve him well!

  27. That button on Lily's butt- cracked me UP! ha! terrible pun.

The celebration looks awesome, everyone's smile is so large :)

  28. That boy has little grown-up hands! They are beautiful. As is the entire boy of course.

The Lily and the boobies thing? Now that is why you need to crop a picture sometimes! Then you can show all the other bits. (That sounds bad - I mean the face and hands and baby, for example.)
