Who Does Depression Hurt?

Miss Maybelle and I were laughing the other day about one of those ubiquitous anti-depressant commercials on TV. The tag line is, "Who does depression hurt?" And it showed a depressed man and his dog who was obviously not getting the happy walk he deserved because his human was depressed.

It would appear that depression even hurts DOGS!

Then this morning when my dog, Dolly, was singing her good morning song to me which is a joyful chorus of soprano happiness, I looked at her and said, "Shut-up, Dolly!" I didn't even think about what I was saying. The words just spilled out of my mouth.

She looked me with a hurt expression and did indeed shut up.

Poor Dolly. I have hurt her with my depression.

I have hurt my dog with my depression.

This is ridiculous.

  1. I think I'm more impressed that she appeared to understand what you were saying..

  3. Depression really sucks, but at least dogs don't hold grudges. It was probably the tone that upset her, not the words. I don't know what else to say...

  4. Oh, Dolly's okay. She'll live to sing again tomorrow. And I'll try to just appreciate her song and tell her she's a sweet singer.
    Which she really is.

  5. That picture of Dolly makes her look way cuter than she really is. It doesn't show her fangs or her bloodlust.

  6. Like my friend Connie reminded me, she grew up on a farm where they ate their animals for dinner. ;/ Really. Why DO we all have dogs when we don't have farms or jobs for them??

  7. Cat's are not like this. You can look them right in the eye and curse them to hell, and they'll continue to purr and tickle your nose with their tail if they think it will ultimately lead to a can of fancy feast getting cracked open anytime soon.

Therefore: all depressed people should go out and get a kitten right now.

OMGosh I am SO GOOD at solving these "big problem" things. Quick-someone ask me about World Hunger.

  8. Heck, I'm not depressed and I've told those dogs to shut up more times than I can count.

    Well, not Pearl.

  9. My dog could care less what I think or say, she is secure in the knowledge that she is ahead of me in the pecking order.

  10. If that is Dolly in that picture she sure doesn't look like she is suffering from anything, except maybe some spoiling owners and an excessive amount of petting. You've got to watch out for that, coddling the critters....

  11. Oh, Dolly is fine. When she sings to me now I am trying very hard to compliment her on her tone and range.
Miss Maybelle- you crack me up! Dolly and bloodlust? Well, when you try and move her at night when she is sleeping, she does growl like a wolf. And she shows her fangs. Perhaps (Ms. Lo) I should roast her! Dog and sweet potatoes- yum!

Tell me, sweeties. Tell me what you think.
