A Variety Of Photos And Explanations

I took this picture last night after dark, obviously. Jack was lying on the table here on the back porch looking at something and I followed his gaze to find that ghostly image of what I do believe is a gecko. I rather like it. Since it was outside, the lizard had no worries when it came to Jack who was watching it as closely as if it were a TV show with a complex plot.

Another beautiful day here. All that rain washed away the rest of the pollen and everything is clean and shiny. Not one cloud to be seen all day long, just bright, azure sky.

This morning I was about to step into the rose bed by the old shed to take a picture of this

when I looked down and saw this little guy.

A small rat snake, warming his blood and so sun-drunk he didn't move an iota as I got closer to take his picture. Those are magnolia leaves which are large so he's not as tiny as he might look compared to them.

I knew I needed to go to town to get supplies for the boys' upcoming visit and again, I took the interstate and water is still very high in the low spots. There's been a whole lot of damage from that storm. Entire schools are so deep in water that classes can't be held in them. People's houses and cars and businesses are still flooded. So it was a sensible thing to take the interstate. I decided to do a quick trip to the Bad Girls Get Saved By Jesus Thrift Store as I haven't visited in awhile. Whoa! Things have changed there!
It's not only lit so brightly now that you need sunglasses to shop, but it's been cleared out and reorganized.

Almost too much.
I found no treasures today. There were a few things that piqued my interest but not enough to motivate me to buy anything. In the furniture building, there was a painted oak table and two chairs that I did send Lily a picture of, thinking that perhaps she could use them on her new porch. They were quite sturdy.

I sent Lily a picture and she was interested. All three items were being sold for $49.00 Not bad for a solid oak table just by itself. If someone hadn't painted it, it would have sold for antique prices. But someone had.

Then on to Publix I went. Yes- again. I got what I needed and was in such a carefree and cheerful mood that I decided I'd take my usual route home, trusting that the waters had receded.
Haha!
I did cross this intersection.

The road to the west was closed but although the road that continued straight on and the road that went to the east did have some standing water on them, they were still open. I was heading straight and got to Old Lloyd Road, the road we actually live on, just fine. BUT, I was stopped by a sheriff who informed me after I'd driven a mile or so towards home, that the road was not passable which meant I had to drive all the way back to the intersection with standing water, drive through that to a main highway, take that up to where the Hilltop is, and get home from there. So what would have taken me fifteen minutes TOPS if I'd driven on the interstate ended up taking me about 45 minutes.
Oh well. La-di-dah. Beautiful day, etc.
We have many, many creeks here and they are usually slow-moving, shallow things but not right now.

I spent the rest of the afternoon just piddling around doing a few things that I've been meaning to get to like potting up a monstera plant I've rooted over the winter. This is yet another descendent of the monstera I got at the dump a year and a half ago or so. Probably more like three years the way times flies for me these days. When I pulled that piece of plant out of the very large peach jar I'd used to root it in, I was stunned by the thickness and sturdiness of the roots. My main thought was, "Jesus God Almighty, if this plant ever gets loose in my yard we'll never, ever get rid of it." It was almost frightening.
I've got it sitting on the back porch next to some hydrangea that I sort of by accident cut when I was trimming the dead wood. I am hoping to root it.

I hung up my fishes.

I may move them but for right now, they make me happy there.

All right. Have you ever seen this picture?

I found Maurice in the baby cradle that Mr. Moon made when I was pregnant with Lily today. She was lying in front of a mirror that Jessie gave me for Christmas which we still haven't hung yet. And for some reason, the way the bear was holding the mirror with Maurice in front of it reminded me of that painting. It's the Rokeby Venus painted by Diego Velazquez in the seventeenth century. Tell me what you think.

Do you see what I am seeing?

I'm probably just crazy.

Anyway, happy Friday, y'all. Time for martinis.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Its a stretch but nice to remember that Velazquez. Maurice is probably concerned that her facial scars may spoil her beauty. It rained like crazy here too and the river in my back yard is dangerously high. Glad the house is elevated.

    1. Oh gosh, Claudia! I hope the river doesn't rise much more!

  2. I've been visiting thrift stores in Vancouver and enjoy it so much. Makes me sad sometimes though too. Today I was in a thrift store, in a fancy neighborhood, so much silver; teapots, chafing dishes, etc. They made me think of the young women, who became old women, polishing their silver, only to have their families donate it to a charity shop.
Otherwise having a lovely time, some rain but not biblical.

    1. There is an element of sadness in thrift store shopping. I completely understand- we can't help but fill in the story sometimes behind objects.
Glad you're having a good time!

  4. Another weather report: we are concerned about rain in NE Ohio. The puddles are standing everywhere after two days of rain, the wind is picking up and there is real concern for the sycamores and pines. Otherwise a very good day.

    1. Ooh boy. I hope all the trees stay in their places. It's a mess when they topple.

  5. That gecko is a work of art. You should embroider that design on the screen so that he is there forever! I am envious of your monstera. I want one of those in the worst kind of way, but have convinced myself that I need no more big plants right now.

    1. Oh gosh, Debbie. If you lived here I would give you that plant. They are really getting out of hand here at Casa Luna. Can you get a small one for cheap and have the joy of watching it grow?

  6. the Diego piece and the Maurice on the bed are identical- I coudln ot tell them apart, had to look very closely . The mirror bove the plant is so gorgeous ! That takes my breath away.
Nice day for a drive and a look in the Jesus shop- table and chairs what a score! Easily brought back to Oak natural if someone wanted that to be...I like it the way it is, bright white porch like.

    2. I knew you'd see it, Linda Sue! No wonder we're friends.
Okay- that porch mirror? The frame is plastic. Truly. I do believe I got it at the Bag Girls Thriftshop.
I think the table would definitely be best painted on the porch.

  7. The Maurice Venus - I love it!. We finally got some rain and cooler temps! A little less than a quarter of an inch, but everything looks much happier and the scents are intoxicating.

  8. I think you’re right about the monstera in your garden.. I still have some of my mom’s in my house in Norway- they just keep on living! And they drive me nuts the way they grow so big and wide!😂Xo, Rigmor

  10. Sweet Baby Cheeses! The rat snake would have sent into Camilla, Georgia in about 4 minutes!! Yes, the Maurice Venus...indeed! Did Lily get that table? Great price. It's rained here (in NE Ohio) all day. We're about ready to build a boat. Flooding abounds. The wind has been roaring all evening. It rained most of yesterday, too. Abysmal and depressing. Cold to boot. Your flowers are always beautiful.

    1. Camilla, Georgia is a sweet little town. Have you been there?
It was just a little bitty snake.
Lily has not bought the table as far as I know. She hasn't had time.
Your weather sounds horrible. I hope you're staying in and being cozy.
We are lucky in flowers here.

    2. Yes, I have relatives in Camilla. They were both pharmacists and owed the town's drug store back in the day. We would visit when I was a kid. My first taste of grits and I've been in love with them since!

  11. 37paddington: $49 for that table and chairs is a steal. I like them painted white for a back porch. I also am really admiring your white porch mirror. It looks like something out of an Anne Rice novel, baroque and rich with stories.

    1. I agree with both of your first sentences. As I told Linda above, that mirror's frame is PLASTIC! But it does look cool, doesn't it? And since it's plastic, I have no qualms about hanging it on the back porch.

  12. I have never seen that picture and for some reason I don't like it. I do love your fishes hanging by that pretty blue window and that deep red rose above the snake photo. Are those snakes dangerous (venomous) or just garden snakes?
The little table and chair set is sweet, I'd like one if I had a porch with enough space. My back porch is filled with cat paraphernalia and the clothes rack and a big old kitchen cabinet.
I wonder how long all that water will take to disappear?

    1. It's okay. You don't have to like that painting. I just realized today that those fishes match my orchid blooms!
Rat snakes are non venomous and are our friends as they do indeed eat rats. And mice. They also eat eggs but that's not a problem any more.
Lily's new back porch is HUGE!
I have no idea about the water. I hope soon.

  13. Maurice IS Venus. It’s astounding. (And I love your vision. Visions?) That table and chairs are a steal. The view of the gecko is unreal.

  14. The Rokeby Maurice! Perfect. Unmistakable.
I think there's a reason it's called monstera. There was one around here that nobody wanted because it would engulf our smallish living area.

    1. And Boud- you see it too! I think all the artists do.
I am beginning to realize why that monstera was at the dump in the first place.

  15. I cannot drive on flooded roads. That would freak me out. I think I've mentioned that I totaled my minivan years ago by stalling in a deep puddle on the road. It was so scary to have water seeping in over my feet. So I avoid ALL puddles now. :) Hope you had fun with the boys, Mary!

    1. I don't remember that story, Ellen! No wonder you won't drive through water. It is not a smart thing to do. AND Glen reminded me that hybrid cars' electrical systems probably don't do well when wet.
We are having fun with these fellas.

  16. I'm pretty impressed that you looked at Maurice and saw the Rokeby Venus! I'm not sure I've ever even seen that painting, so I definitely wouldn't have thought of that. I do see the resemblance, though, now that you mention it.

All that water is crazy! As you said, at least it was a nice day for driving around.

  17. I don't think I've seen that painting and even if I had I would never have made the connection but that's just because I make other weird connections. like Boud's yarn and wire pin weavings reminding me of an artist that 'knits' wax wire and then casts it in glass.

my dad had a huge monstera when I was growing up. I always loved that plant.

  18. Sweet Maurice looks pretty cozy as an art form. The table is good looking and I hope Lily makes the purchase. Rat snakes get huge. A few years ago an adult snake was in my neighbor's swimming pool. I want a monstera for my solarium as I need a large statement plant. Your plant looks fabulous.

    1. Rat snakes can get quite large. I used to find them in the nests of my hen house, swallowing eggs whole. Quite disconcerting.
Get a monstera! Split leaf philodendrons have always done well for me too and I admire their looks a lot.
