The Game Of Life

It's been a full day in Lloyd. First off, I'd like to say that if one of those weather forecasters who said we were going to get a hard freeze wants to come over and put all my porch plants back in order, I'd appreciate that.
It did freeze. I know that because the potato plants got nipped some. I don't think it will end up killing them but it's proof that we did get some low temperatures. However, there was no ice on the chicken waterers and I know it didn't get down to the mid twenties. And I'm not really complaining. It's just so frustrating to trust a weather forecast and plan accordingly and then it all turns out for naught.
Better safe than sorry I guess. And I'm sure there is both art and science when it comes to meteorology.

Anyway, I got up early enough to watch the CBS Sunday Morning News Show and that was a bit of a disappointment in that I'd seen a great deal of the footage before and it was quite short. Keith confirmed what I'd heard- that he's quit smoking cigarettes which is like saying that lions have quit hunting gazelles, that Madonna has quit using mascara. And he does look so good. Jessie suggests that perhaps he has had fillers and that may be true and if so- it looks good on him. Mr. Moon asked, "Who puts on his eyeliner?" I think it may be tattooed on. Who knows? Not me. He's also not wearing his skull ring and chain bracelet anymore. I haven't heard anything about that. But he practically glows with happiness so whatever he's doing or not doing is working beautifully. I hated that at the end of the interview, the interviewer asked him the same question that he's been asked since about 1968 which is, "How long do you think you'll keep on doing this?"
His final answer to that after joking around a bit was, "I guess I'll find out the hard way."

After the show was over I made a big pancakes and eggs and bacon breakfast and the Weatherfords came out. Vergil had offered to help Mr. Moon with some projects and he did. Jessie and I hung out with the boys and we played a game I've never before played in my life which WAS Life, and I really did enjoy it. I hope it's been updated some since the edition I have was issued. We were talking about how the game is set up so that the person who retires the richest wins and Jessie said to August, "That's not always true."
"I know," he said. "The person who ends up with the most love wins."
This sort of blew me away. The wisdom of a kindergartner.
But of course once we started playing, it was all about the money. The Game of Life, unlike the game of life, doesn't really provide much opportunity for love. August and his mama were on one team, Levon and I on the other. After awhile Levon got bored and went to see what Boppy and Daddy were doing and he'd drift in and out. Jessie helped August with the money counting and I was quite surprised at how well he already grasps addition and subtraction. Once the kid learns to read, he's not going to need us for a damn thing!
Well, except for love.

And so here it is, after six, and the sun is still shining brightly through the thick, glossy, waxy magnolia leaves.

I see that the cursed Bradford pears which we vow to take out every winter before they leaf in the spring is already putting out blooms, undaunted by last night's weather.

There's all-the-leftovers-soup bubbling on the stove and the oven is preheating to receive an iron dutch oven filled with lovely risen sourdough that I started last night.
It has been a beautiful day of enjoying the company of family, of sun and coolness, of blue sky, and red cardinals at the feeder.

I have had a few moments of insight with the help of a daughter, a few moments of cuddling with a boy as I read him a book, a few moments of watching the joy on the face of a man who was, by all accounts,  supposed to die fifty years ago but who did not.

Not a bad day at all.

Love...Ms. Moon

  2. well, i missed the early morning dose of Keith, poop. Maybe It will show up on you tube. He is such a lovely soul, so much so much! Levon is just changing so much all of a sudden! Stop feeding him, keep him a shortie forever. August is a poet and a thinker - glorious children!

    2. That picture is of August but I can see why you'd think it was Levon. August is growing fast too.
Glad you got to see our boy. Doesn't he look amazing? I tell you what- when Keith Richards falls in love with someone whether it's a drummer or a personal assistant or a guitar wrangler or a woman, he loves them forever, doesn't he?

  3. It sounds like a good day to me! I forget to mention to Gregg that Keith would be on that morning show. I'm sure he would have watched it had he known, since he loves KR almost as much as you. :)

We DID get a hard freeze....23 degrees! But I'm proud to say all my stuff survived.

    1. I would get along with Gregg pretty dang well, I think.
That's so good that all your growing things survived. You did a good job, Green Mama!

  4. We were a few degrees above freezing here. I am glad you caught the program and I agree with Linda Sue about the grands.

  6. well, your plant protection plan worked.....give or take 10 degrees. Not for naught, really. I caught the Sunday Morning Keith..... no surprises......he does look wonderful but he always did. I do believe his eyeliner is tatooed....... and with his arthritis/nodes on his fingers- no wonder he can't sport all his gold rings any longer. Your day sounds perfect....a lot of this and that.....and always love

    1. He always seems to be wearing the eyeliner so maybe it is tattooed or maybe he's just really good at putting on eyeliner. I've never seen any pictures of him with tattoos which is a bit unusual for a guy in his realm. But of course he could have a few where we cannot see...
I've thought about the gnarly knuckles and the rings too. But the bracelet? He still wears a watch. I think that's funny.

  7. I assume we had cold weather overnight, to sustain all the snow that fell. I've nothing in the ground.
Game of Life! Haven't played it for years.

Ah, but we play the game of life every day, don't we?

  9. It does sound like a wonderful day :)
If you point out the words and have him read them with you, he will be reading on is own in no time! Both of them will, they're so smart.

    1. Oh, he will be reading soon. Maggie is making that transition very quickly, from a non-reader to a reader. One day August will wake up and decide that for some reason he has not considered before, he needs to learn to read and he will immediately. Probably to look stuff up on google or something.

  10. It just occurred to me that another wild boy from the British rock scene was Keith Moon from The Who and I wonder if he was related to one Glen Moon from Lloyd FL? You just gotta beat that drum which is of course the real game of life.

    1. If Mr. Moon and Keith Moon were related, I would be surprised. But of course we're all related if you go back far enough.
I will have to ponder your definition of the meaning of life.

  11. I'm glad your freeze didn't turn into much, despite all the wasted effort. (And not really wasted, I suppose, when you consider that it gave you peace of mind about your plants!) I used to own the game of Life when I was a kid (no doubt an older version) and although we played it pretty often, it was never one of my favorites.

    1. Quite possibly Life was so much more fun than Parcheesi that it just seemed pretty great.
Seriously. How did my granny play all those games of it with us? And why did we like it?
I'm going to uncover and rearrange my plants tomorrow. I'm really glad they didn't freeze.

  12. Whenever the Weatherfords come over, it is like a party at your house! I remember trying to play Life years ago but I don't think we ever got through a whole game. It always seemed to go on for too long and we'd all quit playing.
Glad you had a fun day!

    1. A pancake party for sure. You cannot believe how many pancakes August can eat. I am mystified at how his tiny tummy holds them all.
Our game didn't last THAT long. Maybe because there were only the two teams.

  13. It didn't get as cold here as the most dire prediction either but it did get below freezing. Now surely that's the end of winter. I remember playing that game when my kids were little. I think maybe I even played it with the grandkids a few times.

    1. You'd think it was the end of winter, wouldn't you? Are your pecans leafing yet?
      Life's not a terrible game.
      That sounds profound, doesn't it?

    1. I really was a bit shocked that August came out with that statement. He's not a woo-woo kid.
Didn't Maurice look all glowy in that light?

  16. Ah, yes, Keith looks amazing. 78 years young and I don't think he's ever looked better, or more at ease with his life. And so pleased that he doesn't miss his smokes. Simply amazing. I love your photographs, especially the one of that beautiful cat, though your first one is a true champion. AND I was pleased to see my friend Frida reflected in your mirror!

    1. I think that Keith looked absolutely his best right when he was falling in love with and marrying Patti Hansen. He doesn't even look like the same person! But now I think he is purely beautiful.
Oh yes. I have Fridas all around this house.
