We had a lovely birthday lunch at El Patron today. All of the sisters made it and of course Hank was there with his love, the birthday girl. Vergil, Mr. Moon and Levon were there too. It was nice to be together. We absolutely gossiped and May told us some of her latest jokes (May could make a fortune as a comedy writer), we ate tasty El Patron food, asked for lots of hot sauce, and when the birthday cake was cut we offered a large slab to our server who gladly took it and shared it with a co-worker which made me so happy.
Levon helped me decorate the cake.
I love it when kids help decorate the cake. Their philosophy of course is the more the better and who could disagree with that for a birthday cake? When we sang Happy Birthday, another table of folks joined in which which was delightful. A sweet little lagniappe. And it was a good cake. I think Rachel felt loved.
I sure hope so because she is.
I sure hope so because she is.
My dentist appointment went okay. I supposedly need a crown before half a tooth cracks off, causing me to need a root canal. I'd much rather get a crown now than just wait for the inevitable to happen. I mean- there's never a convenient time to loose half a tooth. I looked at the picture and sure enough, that tooth looks like an iceberg about to calve. I shouldn't have chomped all that ice I used to eat. I was an ice crusher for many, many years and then suddenly, all desire for that activity just disappeared. It's a damn wonder I have any teeth, to be honest. My dental hygienist and I caught up. Her kids, my kids, grandkids. A conversation that occurs every six months.
I went to Costco and got to see and hug Brenda. I had forgotten to bring the list that I keep obsessively but between there and Publix, I got most of what was on it. I had gotten a lot of it yesterday when I DID have my list.
Here's an idea for a TV show that would go over great in retirement communities: NAME THAT GROCERY ITEM!
Someone over the age of sixty makes a grocery list and then they take them to the store and, without the aid of the list, must try to get everything on it.
Points are added and subtracted for what they remember and forget. It would be hysterical! Haha!
Contestants who remembered every single item would win a million dollars!
I sure wouldn't win.
Damn, I'm tired. I'm just flat-out weary. I'm going to try my hardest not to leave Lloyd all weekend long. I know I need to try and do something to protect my porch plants from the freeze we're about to have. I guess I'll get out all of the covers I've washed, dried, folded, and put away. So I need to do that. But I am not going to do much else. We didn't get much rain today but it's supposed to rain all day tomorrow and then the cold temperatures will come.
Here's a picture of my native Buckeye from this morning.
I love its bloom. If I were a hummingbird, I would be all over that.
I like that idea of the grocery list competition. Here's one I thought might be fun. Everyone deposits their grocery list after they are finished shopping. You have to choose one of the lists, sight unseen, buy what's on it and make a meal with just those ingredients. The best one each week gets the million dollars. Fun, eh? Or not, lol.ReplyDelete
Oh, I could totally rock that one! I think. I'm pretty good at improvising refrigerator and pantry meals. I like the idea.Delete
I like the idea of that competition also! Love Elaine's version as well! I've done it many times (haven't we all?)......no list...crap.....but most times it's pretty successful. A hug for Brenda of the mermaid eye shadow....be still my heart. And the Rachel birthday lunch sounds SO fun and warm. I send my love to her on her special day!ReplyDelete
I swear- I feel like I'm naked, walking into the grocery store without my list.Delete
Brenda is a doll. She just is. The best energy!
Thanks for Rachel birthday love. She is so amazing.
Sounds like the sort of party you really love, complete with a birthday cake with all the decorations that will fit. I'm happy you gave a nice slice to your server, too. Included her. Nice.ReplyDelete
Take tomorrow off.
We always offer the server cake and they always take it! I went inside the restaurant to use the restroom before we left and our server and the woman she was sharing that piece of cake with raised their forks and said, "Good cake!" A highpoint of my day, for sure.Delete
Beautiful cake! Sounds like a Moon family love fest for Rachel's birthday, and Levon sure is coming into his own. I do like to think of you doing nothing more than puttering around your house and garden this weekend. I always love being home when I've been away from it a lot. Enjoy.ReplyDelete
I puttered a lot today. Mostly in the house because it has rained on and off. I have been so grateful to be home.Delete
Another great day and happy birthday Rachel. That cake looked so fun!ReplyDelete
It was fun AND delicious!Delete
happy Birthday, dear Rachel- the cake just takes the cake! Yum! We are not allowed to take food to food places here, and must order desert with a candle in it from the establishment. NOT birthday friendly. Levon is changing so quickly- the babyness of his little self barely there. Looks like he is the best birthday hugger- such a splendid day for you all. I would win the competition, not to brag or anything- my list is always the same consisting of two to three things.Easy.ReplyDelete
Well, El Patron sort of operates under their own rules but I don't think it's illegal to take a cake to a restaurant here. We have called beforehand when we were hoping to take a cake somewhere and I don't think we've ever been turned down. I even bring paper plates and plastic forks so we don't add THAT to the bother of the server and kitchen. We try to be polite.Delete
I agree. Levon is hardly a baby anymore. Four years old!
I think that the rules of the grocery list game would have to include one like the list would have at least fifteen items on it. How do you get away with only two or three items on your lists? Because Dennis shops so much at Costco?
Rachel's blue hair is divine! I remember the two grandgirls doing that; one blue, one red.ReplyDelete
I like your buckeye. Ohio has a native version, too. The Buckeye State! The five leaf formation gives them away every time.
I love Rachel's hair, too! She did it herself. Lily colors her kids hair for them. Well, just Owen and Gibson so far.Delete
Ohio IS the Buckeye State! Somehow that didn't register with me. Does your Buckeye bloom? It must.
I like the buckeye. Whenever I forget my list I just buy the essentials, newspaper, milk, and go home. Then I take the list next day and get what I wanted.ReplyDelete
The birthday cake looks fabulous!
Yes. There are staples that I are very important to have. Onions, flour, milk, etc. The rest is mostly just fanciness. Well, you know what I mean.Delete
What a lovely photo of Levon. He looks so "grown up".ReplyDelete
Yep. He's getting old, that boy.Delete
What a lovely birthday treat for Rachel. Her face is filled with joy as she hugs young Levon. There's so much love, laughter and kindness in your family Mary. You are indeed a lucky woman as you have often admitted.ReplyDelete
I am the luckiest.Delete
Also, I think Levon likes being the only kid at events. Because all the others are in school every day of the week he still gets Tuesdays and Thursdays to be an only.Delete
Happy birthday to Rachel! I'm terrible at remembering things at the grocery store. I usually put my list in notes on my phone and then I'll definitely have it with me.ReplyDelete
I hate to think of all your plants with their fresh spring growth getting hit by a freeze. I hope it doesn't happen.
For whatever reason, I have to have that paper list with a pen to cross things off. An index card is my preferred list making paper.Delete
I hate to think about us losing all the blooms and new growth too but they keep saying it's going to get below freezing. Just...ugh. I mean, I don't care if it gets down to 33. That's fine. But freezing temperatures mean everything turns brown and some things die.
What a nice celebration for Rachel!ReplyDelete
My daffodil and tulip tips that have been coming up are in an inch or so of snow this morning. I just leave them be and they often surprise me by doing just fine. Hope your plants are okay if you get your freeze.
I'm going to have to cover up some of the porch plants and that's all there is to it. Anywhere from 31-33 I can risk it but when the forecast is for 26, it's a different story.Delete
Good for you for sharing some of that birthday cake with your server. Nice act of kindness.ReplyDelete
We wouldn't think of not offering!Delete
Lovely pictures! I was an ice cruncher, too! I had to eat ice ALL the time - a real problem for my teeth and those around me, but I couldn't stop - until I had a routine blood test and I was severely anaemic. I was started on iron and my craving vanished overnight and I haven't needed ice for over 10 years.ReplyDelete
I've heard that about ice crunching and anemia but I was never anemic so I have no idea what my problem was. Glad they figured it out for you.Delete
Levon looks so grown up!ReplyDelete
Glad you had a good day and good luck with the storm coming your way.
He is certainly becoming a big boy, isn't he?Delete
They keep telling us we're going to get some fierce weather. Hard to believe at this moment.
Ha ha, name that grocery item! Heck if I only have three items on my list you can bet your bottom dollar I will only remember two of them!ReplyDelete
