Life As A MerMer

I did some MerMer duty today. Jessie was working and so was Vergil and I gladly picked up the boys from school and kept them for awhile. Levon's preschool got out first and when I got there to claim him, he came running out barefooted. "The Barefoot Flag was out today!" he said when I noted he was not wearing his flip-flops.
I just love that. When the Barefoot Flag is flying, you can run around with your feet directly on the ground. Since it got up to eighty-something today that was appropriate.
He went to Subway with me where I got a sandwich and bought not only a cookie for him and his brother but also, small bags of Cheetos. Ooh boy.
Also? I had forgotten how lousy Subway sandwiches are compared to Pub Subs which are superior in every way.
Didn't matter. I was hungry.
We went back to the house and chatted while he ate half his cookie and a few of his Cheetos and I ate my inferior sub. He wanted to save some to eat when August got home. Before you knew it, it was time to go get that boy. He goes to the same elementary school that all four of mine went to and it was a trip, being back there and doing pick-up. Seems like it was just yesterday that I'd been there which is about the clichest cliche in the world but I swear- it does. I spent a lot of time at that school, being home room mother and volunteering in the class rooms, going to plays and spaghetti dinners and carnivals. I can't believe that now I have a grandchild going there but it would appear that I do.

And then back to their house we went and cookies were eaten and there was trampolining. And look who I got to visit with!

Fancy Pants! That little rooster is living his best life with his own loving hens and back yard. He looked happy and glossy and at peace with the world. I'm glad.

The boys and I read some Captain Underpants and then, because it mentioned the Mentos and Diet Coke explosion thing, we had to watch a few videos of that on my phone and we laughed and laughed. And then, to be educational, we watched some octopus videos. We are really into octopuses.
About this time Vergil came out of the room he works from and found us all huddled up on the couch. Levon was tired and leaning on me and August was cuddling up a little too. It was so sweet. "Go love on your daddy," I told them, and they jumped up and did.

Now I've come on home and as I drove into Lloyd I was once again so glad that I live here. It is peaceful, usually, and the trees- oh, the trees! I never get tired of the trees of Lloyd, especially, as you know, the ancient oaks that shelter and shade us.

Last night though, the lights of an ambulance and some police cars across the street broke the peacefulness. Mr. Moon went out to see what was going on and it appeared that Pinot had taken a fall in the street. This was way after dark. I guess he may have been drinking and fallen on his walk home. I don't know. I've never even seen the man with a beer but that doesn't mean anything. Whatever, I hope he's okay. I should stop and ask No Man Lord what he knows because I'm sure he has the whole story.

Another disturbing but not nearly as important thing that happened around here was that this morning Mr. Moon asked me if I'd seen Jack. He'd not seen him since yesterday late afternoon and I had not either. We looked upstairs and in the office and he was not in those places. It's just not like Jack not to show up for breakfast and we were worried for sure. I went out and looked up and down the road but saw no bodies or buzzards. That was a bit of a relief although I'm not sure that the cats ever even cross the road.
"What about the garage?" I asked my husband.
"I'll go look," he said, and sure enough, Jack was locked in there by accident last night. He followed Glen in like a puppy, seemingly unscathed in the least. We are hoping he ate a few of the mice who like to nest in the engines of the cars which are patiently waiting to be restored. Some of you may remember when Jack got inadvertently locked up in a room upstairs for a shockingly long amount of time- something like seventeen days. He survived and I imagine he ate lizards and napped a great deal. So one night in the garage was nothing for that big boy.

And that's about it in news from here. I did pick a lot of beautiful camellias today. They are just exploding, giving it their all before the heat becomes too much for them.

The bees are enjoying them tremendously.

Can you imagine camellia honey?
Hmmm...
We really need to start keeping bees.
And I really need to start supper.

Happy Friday, y'all.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Nothing like being busy out in the world to make one appreciate coming home. Those boys are growing so fast! I hope Pinot is ok. That's a great name for a story by the way. So is No Man Lord.

  8. The camellias are so beautiful. Jack was locked in a room for 17 days? Were you frantic while looking for him? I was frantic when my Angel disappeared in 2017.
I was never much involved in my kids schools, we moved around a lot and usually the committees and volunteer groups were already solid. I mostly baked for the bake sale days.

    1. He was! And after about a week I figured we'd never see the boy again but then one day I had the thought- what if he had gotten shut in to a room upstairs? Jessie, bless her heart, went up to check and she came back down the stairs with him following, fine as you please.
It takes a lot of baking to keep our schools running!

  10. So Pinot (and his brother Mango) and No Man Lord are their real names? I always thought you made up those names to protect their privacy. Hope he is all right.
    Love your flowers.

    1. Pinot and Mango are indeed real names. No Man Lord is not. He used to have a sign in his yard that said that. No Man Lord. I've learned his name but always forget it.
I hope Pinot is okay too.

  11. Those Boys are Adorable!!! I like they have Barefoot Day at the School. They have Pajama Day here sometimes, Arizona not being Barefoot Friendly since it gets too Hot on most surfaces and would cause injury.

    1. I was a little worried about Levon's feet getting burned going to the car on the cement sidewalk! But their play area is mostly dirt so it's usually fine.

  13. Those camellias really do look like they're bursting with air, as if they're about to float up and bob around by the ceiling! Wonderful. What happy pics of your lovely grandkids!

My boys were happy yesterday and they generally are!

  14. Cats have just not quite evolved for cohabitation with humans. They have a talent for getting themselves into pickles involving enclosed spaces.
