Let's See- Where Am I Now?

And that was the wisteria on the trellis this morning. It was dark and gray and spitting rain, windy and ominous outside. We kept getting tornado watch alerts. I let the chickens out before it really started coming down and suddenly, we got torrential rain. It was falling so hard that it was almost worrisome. Thunder and lightening- a real storm.
And then...it was over. It blew away and the only thing left is the wind which continues to dance the chimes and rustle the new leaves on the oaks and Bradford pears, even the sturdy magnolia leaves.

So it's been a beautiful day, mostly, and I've done so very little. I've lost all my energy and I can't hold a thought in my head for two minutes. Two seconds. It takes me all day long to do the simplest things. I can't focus on a task. I go to fold clothes and next thing I know, I'm sweeping the kitchen, half the laundry still in the dryer. I look up a recipe for banana bread and then I'm online, looking at rugs to buy. Eventually, I got a few things done but it's been a pure struggle. I did make the banana bread. I did get the bed made. I did get the laundry put away. I did pick greens.

I did not buy a rug.

However, I ordered a pair of old lady orthotic flip flops and a new set of sheets. Doesn't it seem like I just ordered sheets a little while ago? I think it's been almost a year. I really have no idea. Anyway, these sheets better be good. Shopping online is just crazy. Too many GeeDee choices. Too many reviews. No way to really know what anything feels like or even looks like in real life. But here we are and I can no more fathom going to a shoe store or someplace like Bed, Bath and Beyond than I can imagine getting on a cruise ship bound for Crete.

As in- ain't gonna happen.

I chose and ordered the sheets because I read ONE review that said they were excellent and the best at not pilling. I hate sheets that pill with a passion. The sheets I got from Brooklinen, whenever it was last year that I bought them, have not pilled. However, I wanted to try some of the sateen-weave variety for a change. When you spend approximately ten hours a night in bed (conservatively, to be honest), a little variety can be appreciated. They are supposed to look like this:

The color is "surf".
Like a dream, right?
I hope that Jack and Maurice like them.
And oh yeah, Mr. Moon. I hope he likes them too.

Ooh boy. I need to go make supper. Last night's corned beef and cabbage, potatoes and carrots was delicious. It really was. Tonight I'm making a favorite NYT's recipe with chicken thighs, vinegar, paprika, peppers, garlic, etc., etc. I will slice up a bunch of our still-thriving greens and dress them lightly with balsamic and olive oil, salt and pepper and serve those on top with orzo on the bottom. I've been putting those greens on everything unless we're having a big salad of them and it's so delicious. I made a white chicken pizza the other night with them and we died and went to heaven.
Come hell or high water, depression, anxiety, broken ribs, a fucked up foot, or probably even the rapture, I can still cook.

So far.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Moat of my sheets come from the thrift store. I would walk along the aisle and feel each one. If it felt nice I would look at the size and figure out if I could use it. The feel of Egyptian Cotton is wonderful, as is Supercale. I am a sheet hoarder and I really need to get rid of some. I have also ordered online and have not been displeased.

    1. I can never find good sheets at thrift stores and I look! You must have a special talent for it!

  2. Here's what happened last time I went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond (after deciding I should support a local establishment instead of buying curtain rods on-line):

First I checked the BB&B website to see if they carried what I wanted-- and apparently they did. But after wandering through the overcrowded, overmerchandised store while being bombarded with hideous music, I learned that, while an item may be listed on their website, that doesn't mean they actually have it at the store-- thus I was invited into a back office so they could order it for me on-line.
Well, obviously I could have stayed in my own home listening to my own choice of music, and ordered on-line by myself-- without being limited to BB&B's on-line inventory.
So I went home and did exactly that.

    1. That store is thrilling and disgusting at the same time. I see things and think, "Wow! I could use that!" and then I think about it for a half a second and realize that no, I can't and I don't want to. I have bought decent sheets there. You never really know what you're going to find. They do carry a shit ton of stuff.

  3. Wrote and lost a post complaining that sheets are too deep for my old mattress. They're designed for modern deep mattresses. I use anchors at the corners but not very effectively.

    1. I've thought about using old-fashioned diaper pins to anchor bottom sheets in place. Mine never do seem to quite want to stay in place. Probably not a good idea to be piercing the mattress though.

  4. lovely sheets.......the color is sublime. I hope they resemble that color when they arrive! I haven't kept a complete thought in my head today either.....vacuuming, laundry....back and forth......then....whatever else popped up to keep me from completing other said tasks until mid afternoon. Can't wait to get into bed with book.....which is my most sacred and peaceful time where my brain seems to focus best with no other distractions!

    1. Me too, Susan. I want THAT color, not some grayish thing.
And yes- being in bed is heaven. Book, cat, pillows, covers. Happiness.

  5. I really like the Costco sateen sheets. No pilling as far as I can tell. And then I dye them crazy colors.

    1. I generally get white sheets so I can bleach them. Also- you can't tell what color they are in the dark so...
Did you find anything good at the shop?

  7. Looks like you can slide right into those sheets. And the color is luscious, too.

  9. I had never heard of "orzo" before so I had to google it. This kind of pasta is not used much in England but like the Italians we would call it risoni. Sounds like you are floundering about just now. Earth to Moon! Earth to Moon! Come in please...

  10. Loved your story about sheets because today we’re getting a new bed! AND new bamboo sheets and pillows! I’m a bit of a thread count snob, and despise pilling! As I sit here with a painful lower back I can hardly wait until bedtime tonight!

  11. Well, I can totally identify with your feelings of disorganization! I find the same thing happening to me -- starting one task, doing another with the first one unfinished.

I'm terrible at buying sheets. Like you said, too many choices. (Which is true of everyting nowadays.) We have the added complication of having an American King mattress, and British King sheets don't fit it! So I have to get sheets every time I go back to the states!

    1. It IS true of everything these days. Too many damn choices. Can you buy American sheets online? How did you get an American King mattress in GB? Crazy.

  12. we need new sheets and that is one thing we are going to do with out stimulus money if it ever arrives.I go for high thread count. the last time I bought sheets they were egyptian cotton 600 thread count (at least, maybe higher, it's been a decade at least). just so silky and wonderful. I was going to cook a recipe with shallots, apples, and italian sausage but I had an unexpected errand to run so we ended up having a weird assortment of leftovers.

    1. I do love Egyptian cotton. I've heard recently that after a certain point with thread count, it doesn't matter any more. I forget why. Whatever. Yes- it should be adequate.
Are you going to cook your sausage and shallots and apples tonight? That sounds so good.

  13. I've seen a few people mention the New York Times cooking app, so while I'm not going to pay for the app I'm going to hop over there and take a look at their recipes. I guess it's a good thing we enjoy cooking really isn't it - we must spend half our lives having to do it. Pity the poor soul who doesn't like to cook!

    1. That app has been worth every penny to me as it has inspired me to cook new things, find new favorites. I love it. And generally, the recipes use ingredients I have. Plus, reading the comments on the recipes cracks me up.
