I Wonder What We'll Have For Breakfast Tomorrow?

Yesterday when I was getting out of the car when we got home from our lunch with Maggie, I saw that the roses on the back of the pump house were blooming. I almost cried. The color of these roses is the deepest, darkest red I've ever seen. I'm pretty sure these blooms come from the rootstock of the rose which is a crazy wild-looking thing that I cannot prune enough to control it. The other roses on the vines are a pale, dainty pink.

Every year I try to clean and weed the bed those roses are in and prune them back hard and every year they look as if I've never touched them or the ground they grow in. Also, they have thorns like the teeth of a piranha. They will cut a bitch.
But I doubt I'd ever try to get rid of them. In their wildness they are a sort of perfection.

We had another lunch out today at Chow Time which is where the kids chose to go. Glen and I were doing an August and Levon pick-up after they spent the night with Lily and the cuzzies.
Here's what they looked like after lunch.

You might note that Levon looks a little under the weather. And he is. Lily called me last night to say that he'd thrown up but seemed pretty okay. We decided not to tell Jessie because what could she do? She'd just worry and feel guilty for not being with him which is ridiculous but you know how that goes.
Mothers.
This morning he had his cereal and seemed fine but he felt warm to me when I hugged him at Chow Time and looked and acted a little puny and barely ate. August ate so much that I told his mother on the phone a little while ago that they had to shut the restaurant down after we left because he'd eaten all the food and there was none left.
That was a little hyperbolic but the kid did put it away.
Maggie charmed me by bringing the new stuffed bobcat we bought her yesterday and had fixed her up all fancy in a dress I made for a doll of hers. It fit perfectly and the bobcat looked quite elegant and ready for a ball.

We brought the boys home and I took Levon's temperature. He had a little one and I ran up (haha- I drove) to the GDDG and got some kids' tylenol and kids' ibuprofen. I gave him a dose of the ibuprofen and just a little while ago he was happily eating boiled peanuts with his brother and his grandfather, all of them watching the Masters Tournament which, as I understand it, is a very big thing in the world of golf.
The boys did let me read them two books on the swing on the porch outside the guest room and I loved them for that. Otherwise, it's been golf, golf, and more golf. I just don't think Levon feels like going outside and kicking bamboo and frankly, I don't either.

I'm going to go finish cooking our supper. The kids chose chicken and dumplings ONCE AGAIN and all is done except for making the dumplings and putting them into the pot to cook. I want to get them to bed at a reasonable hour. I doubt they got a huge amount of sleep last night.

Oh! We have reached an agreement with the owners of the cabin and it will soon be ours and when I say, "we" or "ours" I mean, of course, Glen. Yes, yes, it's all our money but this is his dream, his project, his new reason for joy. How could I not support that?
I will say though that they better get some GeeDee internet out there and some cell service too.
If the fucking apocalypse is about to happen, I need to know.

I just read the article HERE.
Pretty sure I might vomit before the night is over too.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. LOL Ms. Moon! I read your header that said *I wonder what we'll have for breakfast tomorrow*....and then the photo of that deep blood red rose......and I thought *wow, she has figured out how to cook roses*! I almost fell of my chair laughing at myself!

    1. Oh, no roses for breakfast. But I would love a vase of those on the table where we ate it.

  2. It did seem like a non sequitur. Maggie's not too old yet to dress toys up! That was nice. The thing I know about the Masters is azaleas. I think golf happens too

    1. The thing I can remember about the Masters is that the winner gets a green jacket.

  3. The red rose has a lovely regal velvet texture and color. You have a great collection of roses.
Congratulations on the waterfront home purchase and now the fun begins customizing and ensuring Internet and cell connections are on the ready. It will be a wonderful project. Gathering family together at the waterfront sounds fantastic.

  4. I can practically smell those roses. That cousin picture is the best. Glad Mr Moon's dreams are coming true.

  5. I'll follow that link in a minute, but first I'll tell you I have a similar deep red rose with the most wonderful fragrance. The "gardeners" slash everything to waist level with chainsaws and a couple of weeks later there is a four feet high branch on that rose again. I love it.
I hope Levon is well again by now. I also hope they get internet and cell service out at the lake house.

    1. Levon is doing pretty well, thank you.
The old roses are hardy as can be, aren't they? I love them for that.

  6. I can't follow that link without signing in so the NYT has all my information, or at least that's what the link tells me and I don't want that.

    1. Gawd. We have black mold on our ceilings. Luckily they're about fifteen feet tall. And our roof doesn't leak. It's just condensation, I guess. Is your climate a humid one? I hope you get a chance to watch the roofers at work. To me, they are really almost balletic (is that a word?) in their grace and skill.

  8. Congratulations on your new home. I'm sure Mr. Moon will have a wonderful time doing it up (and you will too, when it's ready)!

  9. Seeing your beloved grandchildren clustered in that corner, couldn't you train them up to be a singing group - like a modern day version of The Osmonds? Levon could be Little Jimmy Osmond and of course Magnolia would be your Marie. As their manager, you could make a fortune!

  10. Congratulations on Glen’s new project. I hope you grow to love it. Those kids are wonderful and I enjoy seeing photos of them together. Hope Levon feels better quickly. I’ve had chicken. I’ve had dumplings. But I’ve never had chicken & dumplings.

    1. I hope I grow to love it too, Mitchell. With all my heart.
I love how the cousins love each other. They are so good with each other.
I could send Jerry a sort-of recipe on how I make my chicken and dumplings but he'd probably rather not. It is a very easy dish to make.

  11. Of course Donald Trump is hanging a portrait of himself. Of course he is.

Roses are very strange. We have some that I suspect are from root stock (coming up from the ground) and they're quite beautiful. It makes me wonder what the grafted plant would have looked like!

I'm glad Levon seems better and hopefully August will avoid this particular whatever-it-is.

    1. Trump is hanging a cartoon of himself. He has less dignity than a cross between a german shepherd and a chihuahua.
Well, in this case with the roses I guess I get to see both the root stock and the grafted plant. I have another white rose and the same thing happens there.
Levon is mostly fine. A little laid back. I think maybe he mostly misses his mama.

    Lovely roses!

  13. Of course he had Obama's portrait moved. Obama is everything Trump wants to be. I'm surprised he didn't order it put in the basement.

I love chicken and dumplings and have never made it, ever. My sister would make it but she up and died on me. You'd never know I pruned all my roses in February they've grown that much.

I was wondering about the 'cabin' since you had said previously that they had accepted your offer, and by your, I mean Glen's.

    1. I had the same thought as you, Ellen. I'm surprised he didn't put it in the basement or a bathroom.
You could make chicken and dumplings easy, easy. I promise you.
Roses are crazy hardy, aren't they? The heirlooms, at least.

  14. I find with roses, that the worse the thorns, the more intense the smell. Is that true of yours? I love the smell of roses.
When covid hit, I started taking people's temperatures a lot more, especially ours. What I have noticed over time is that Jack's normal body temperature is about 36.9C, but if it even goes up to 37.4C, he is noticeably lethargic and doesn't feel well. Glad the ibuprofen helped Levon.
Congrats on the cabin. Let the fun begin:)

    1. I think you are right about thorns and smell when it comes to roses.
I know that temperatures do go up and down during the day, generally higher in the afternoon. But you're right- even a little fever can cause any of us to feel less than great.
