I Talk Too Much

Here we have a cloudless sulphur butterfly. It may actually be of the angled cloudless sulphur butterfly variety. I love how the underside of the wings look like a pretty yellow leaf.

There you can see the intense yellow of it.

So. yes, instead of being in an emergency room, I was at home today, doing at-home things including taking pictures of butterflies on flowers. I slept so hard last night, and the few times I did wake up, I'd do a quick mental check to see if my side was hurting and every time the answer was blessedly "no."
Phew.
I think I figured out what made that stone begin to move. I believe that it was picking up those heavy branches the other day. The twinges started coming on just a little while after I did that. And things have been pretty quiet with it today although when I was weeding in the garden, kneeling, I could feel it. I suppose I could just lay still for the rest of my life and it might not ever move again but we all know that's not going to happen.

So yes, I did some weeding but not a whole lot. It's simply too hot to stay out for long. But I got some of the ones that have been bugging me so badly. The field peas are coming along nicely and the okra is definitely not. The cucumbers appear to have been stricken by something- possibly the squash vine borer. The tomatoes- eh.
Not what I would wish for. The little cherry tomatoes that I started from the seeds of the Sugar Bombs are actually making fruit but I'll be surprised if they come out the same as their parents. The peppers are still looking good and my poor, single eggplant is growing and putting out a few blossoms so there is hope there. Mr. Moon doesn't really love eggplant so I never plant very much of it. Maybe if I started calling it "aubergine" he would like it better. It's a prettier word, I think.
The best looking things, the healthiest and hardiest, are of course the volunteer sweet potatoes and the volunteer zinnias. Anything that wants to grow so badly that it springs up of its own sturdy accord tends to do well, I've found.

Mr. Moon texted me a little while ago to tell me that they are back on shore and he will be heading home as soon as they clean the boat, clean the fish, and pack the house up. I know he's exhausted. They were on the water since sunup. I'm not expecting him any time soon. That man works hard and he plays hard. Offshore fishing is a strenuous activity but one that he gladly does because he just loves it so much.
I can't imagine loving anything that requires that much effort. I realize I am not all women. I know some women who love nothing more than running marathons and riding their bikes up and down mountains.
God bless 'em. I ain't one of them.

So I tried using the Bar Tender's Friend on my shower door that has hard water deposits on it which have not yielded to anything that I've tried. I made up the paste that I used to clean my oven door window with so successfully and smeared it on and left it overnight. Then I scrubbed it with a non-scratch scrubber.
Guess what?
It didn't work.
I truly and really give up. At this point any effort in removal attempts are just to be viewed as amusing home science projects.
And really- who cares? If you could see the mildew on the walls of my bathroom, you would faint. FAINT. Dead away. I'm not climbing a ladder to scrub walls with bleach water. I would have ten years ago but there was no mildew on them then. Guess those walls lost their chance, huh? I have a fantasy that Mr. Moon will finally agree to hiring painters who will do that sort of thing but once again- he hates beyond reason paying someone to do something that he can do himself.
And he can do almost anything himself.
Can and will are two entirely different things though and after thirty-eight years of marriage, instead of learning how to nudge him into projects that he does not really want to do, I've merely learned to accept that which I cannot change.
And somehow, I love him more than ever. He is who he is, just as I am who I am. We are vastly different, vastly imperfect, and I could not have found a better person to be my partner.
But guess what I've done for him today? I used his shower last night because mine had Bar Tender's Friend smeared all over the shower door and I noticed that his shower head was in dire need of a good vinegar soak. It, too, had hard water deposits on it and in it. So I got out the step ladder and the vinegar and a plastic bag and a rubber band and it is now soaking and won't he be surprised when he goes to take his shower?
This is the sort of thing that thrills me these days. My god but I am old.
His birthday is in four days and I am thinking that I could tell him that a cleaned-out shower head is his present. What do you think?
Maybe?
No?
Okay. Whatever.

Here's a picture that Jessie sent today.

The whole mountain family went on a river canoeing trip! I hear it was quite exciting in that there were capsizings and other small problems but everyone survived and it looks to me like those three really had a very good time.
Golly, I miss them.
Well, I'll be seeing them soon enough.

Oh. Here's some zinnias.

Aren't zinnias the happiest flowers?
It's like the creator was being bothered by some naughty cherubs and as a distraction, gave them a box of crayons and some paper and said, "Here! Draw some flowers!" And they did and he looked at them and said, "Hmmmm...."
And he saw that they were good and he made them real.

I guess that was the sermon from the Church of the Batshit Crazy for this Sunday.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Thanks for the zinnias. They are my favorite. That butterfly and moth were very good, too. Definitely put the shower head on the list of presents for his current birthday.

    1. Well, he was not overly enthused about the benefits of my vinegar bath for his shower head. So...Darn.

  2. you never talk too much! Glad your pain has subsided...and perhaps you need to re-visit the term *moderation* when it comes to lugging and tugging tree limbs? And Mr Moon caught fish! YES! He'll be glad to be home and all will be well at the Moon house! The zinnias are stunning! I've never had luck with them.....cucumber beetles here devour them....and I'm tired of fighting it all.....so no zinnias for me! I do have an abundant crop (as always) of deep pink valerian...... and my Shasta daisies are budding up nicely!

    1. You know me too well. It is pretty much all or nothing when it comes to physical stuff. Which is ridiculous.
I'm so sorry that zinnias don't do well for you there. They love Florida's heat, I think.

  3. Yesterday's comments re: Lis and Lon had me doing a search for them! OMG ... your girl looks just like you! You just can't beat great Bluegrass music ... It is better then country western IMO! And, too, your Lis does have a beautiful voice!!
Glad the stone has settled down ... for now!

    1. That's so cool! I'm glad you sought out the Williamson's. A lot of the songs that Lis writes are not very bluegrass at all. But they do that genre very well.

  4. No more picking up heavy sticks for you, Mrs. Moon! As for your shower cleaning adventures.. it seems like such a losing battle, doesn’t it? Baking soda and vinegar works pretty well, but it’s still not‘perfect’.. I think it would be a pretty nice present to have my shower cleaned for me!😄 I like how you think about you and your Mister.. I always say ‘count your blessings, you can’t have it all in one bag’!’ Keep feeling good, and remember: no more picking up heavy sticks!! Xo, Rigmor

    1. Oh, I tried baking soda and vinegar LONG ago. Did not work noticeably AT ALL. Dang.
You are right about my husband and I do very much count my blessings.
All right. No more picking up heavy sticks.

  5. Oh, and I absolutely LOVE zinnias!

  6. My zinnia seeds are coming along, mo buds yet but I'm hopeful. And your travails with the shower door are why I have shower curtains. I throw them in the washing machine now and then.
Hoping the dreaded stone stays still now.

    1. Well, I do like shower doors and if I had just been more constant with cleaning mine, I would not be having this problem. It's a built in shower and two of the walls are glass.

  7. Oh this post! Sandwiched by vibrant and beautiful pictures. I've been busy and was just now able to read the last week's worth of posts. I missed my visits here!!

    1. Hello, Jill! I hope that what you've been busy with has been all good stuff.

  8. I am late to this party but have you used CLR? Once (if?) The lime is removed, they suggest using rainx for windshields to prevent it.

    1. I have tried CLR but not the truly industrial strength stuff. And the non-industrial strength stuff did nothing. I use a product that is supposed to keep the water from sticking but I think that honestly, a squeegee works best.

  9. I do love zinnias and wouldn't you know it, they are one of the things that won't grow here for me. The seeds will germinate and little green leaves will appear and overnight they get eaten away. I can't grow anything insode because of the hayfever/asthma so I will just enjoy your zinnias. I almost didn't see that first butterfly, thought it was an odd looking leaf.
Mildew anywhere scares the bejeebers out of me, breathing those mould spores sets off the asthma.
I'm glad Mr Moon is on his way home to you again and with fish!
Like Debby says, try CLR. If it doesn't work, get a new shower door.

    1. Well, I'll have to replace two of the shower walls because they are both made of glass. What sort of CLR do you use?
I am so sorry that you can't grow zinnias. They seem to be almost impervious to the many bugs here. Which is weird.
Oh Lord. You could never visit me. My mold and mildew would kill you.

  10. I have found in the past that soapy steel wool pads will scrub it off too but it's a very time consuming job with lots of rinsing involved.

    1. No, I used the very fine stuff same as I use on my saucepans and it doesn't scratch, I cleaned off the shower glass here when I first moved in and since then have squeegeed then dried with a rough towel after every single shower and have never needed anything else on it. I have a shower curtain instead of a door, so two tiled walls, one glass wall and the curtain which gets tossed in the wash about once a month. I've been here 12 years now and never scrub the shower since that first time. No CLR needed.

  11. Limescale in my bathroom/shower drives me nuts too. I'm getting both my bathrooms redone in July and won't miss looking at that stuff at all! I'm glad you feel better today though. And believe me, I'm not one of those women who runs marathons either. Yesterday I thought I'd go down to the lake and walk but ended up sat on my backside all afternoon reading!

  12. “ I can't imagine loving anything that requires that much effort.”
    Well,
I *know* this is not what you meant,
but when I was present at the birth of a friends baby, I thought “this is an Olympic event”… like a marathon.
Motherhood in general requires more effort than fishing.

    1. You know, Fresca, when I wrote that I absolutely thought of childbirth and motherhood. I guess I put those in a different category because...I don't know! I tell you what, though, having had an over-ten-pound baby at home, I can't imagine doing anything more physically challenging.

  13. river canoe trip! my favorite thing. and the thing that I loved to do that was so much work, being a river guide. I just spent about an hour outside this morning before I even had coffee cutting back all the gone by purple coneflowers that are everywhere in this yard because early in the morning is the only time to ge out there.

my two little okra plants aren't doing squat. my one bell pepper plant also not doing squat, not a single flower. and let's not talk about all the housecleaning that isn't getting done around here.

    1. I worked in the garden some this afternoon and almost died. It was overcast for part of that time so I didn't die but- ugh! And then I went to the river to jump in and cool off. Heaven.

  14. It's hard not to love a zinnia. I'm glad the side isn't hurting. Maybe you just strained a muscle lifting those branches and it's not a kidney stone at all? Is that wishful thinking?

    1. Also, why DO we Americans call aubergine eggplant? It is a terrible word, and most aubergines don't look anything like eggs!

      Delete
    2. Nah. Not a strained muscle. Trust me. I know this pain intimately. You're right about the eggplant/aubergine thing. Absolutely.
