La-Di-Dah

Woke up this morning with that Sunday feeling. That flat, gray, fuck-all of a feeling and I have no idea why.
The weather is abysmal in my opinion. It's going to get down into the 20's tonight and the next six nights, too, according to the weather widget and that is just too cold for me. I know, I know! Some of you are experiencing temperatures down into the minuses but I live in Florida for a reason and the reason is not that we have such interesting people here, especially when they do bath salts.
Yep, Florida Man, talking about YOU!
Anyway, I covered up all the plants still left on the porch but I have serious doubts that they'll survive almost a week of below-freezing temperatures. I guess we'll see if arugula can survive it and lettuce and collards and mustards, too. I'm pretty sure the collards can, not sure about the rest.
Jessie invited us over tonight to have supper and watch a movie with them and with Lily and her children and I was going to go and I cooked stuff- a pot of New Year's Day Luck of black-eyed peas and rice and greens and also two loaves of bread. But when it came down to it, I just couldn't bring myself to leave the house and so I didn't, which is unusual for me when it comes to family occasions. But Mr. Moon went and took the food so I am represented, so to speak.
We need to leave all of the faucets and garden sprinklers dripping tonight or we'll lose water pipes. Mr. Moon just finished fixing one that broke somehow, some time, and we don't know when. I've got my heater set on 62 and it hasn't stopped running all day.

Let's see. What else can I complain about?

I can't really think of anything. I have had a very, very good time sitting on the couch and embroidering overalls for August and watching Call The Midwife. I mean, honestly- I couldn't be much happier than playing with needle and thread and color and stitches while watching that show.

Jessie told me to go ahead and embroider whatever I wanted and not to worry about anything being too "girly." August is going to get the reputation of being a hippie at the library baby group but he's man enough to handle it. Jessie said she's tired of bats and balls and dinosaurs and cars, which are the only thing that most boy clothes are decorated with. Oh yeah, monsters too.

And I guess that's just about all I have to say on any subject. Keep your pipes running, make soup, eat it, don't get frostbite or whatever it is you Yankee people get. Chilblains? What's up with that?

A year ago right now I was drinking rum and looking at this:

And my day had gone like this.

Sigh.

My favorite quote from the post was: "We went to town and got our supper on the square and it took forever and ever and finally the waiter told us that there was only one chef today and that he was drinking tequila."

I remember that so well.

Ah lah.
I think I'll go have a shot of rum.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. I've made my soup and eaten it too. And shared some of it as well. I think you taught me about the black eyed peas thing for New Year's day.

    1. I believe any bean will do but black eyes are traditional around here.

  2. It's set to get down to 16° here with wind chills in the single digits. Schools are on a 2 hour delay tomorrow became of it. Brrrr...

I've had that flat gray fuck all feeling today, too. I think we could both probably use those rum shots. Or a lot of tequila.

  3. Ah my love, tomorrow is another day. I understand about needing to stay home. Sometimes, no matter how much we love people, we need to plug into ourselves and just recharge, especially at the end of a relentlessly social season. I love thinking about your hippie grand baby.

    1. I did. I just needed so badly to stay home and be quiet. And it was fine. No one really cared that much. Not in a bad way- just, I needn't be worried that people will be mad if I don't show up.
Let's see if August will let me embroider his clothes when he's in school!

  5. 20 degrees sounds cold enough to me. Four years out the midwest and I'm not sure how I survived that weather.

May 2018 bring you joy. And all of us an impeachment.

    1. Indictment, impeachment, whatever. Please. That would bring me joy. How DID you manage four years in the midwest?

  6. we're hovering near or below zero all week for our lows. my solution to the pipe problem here is to stuff a pillow between the curtains/pipes where they are closest to the window on the north side of the house (the 'cold' side) to insulate that part of the basement a little better and we haven't had it happen yet. i had him start my car yesterday because i haven't driven in over a week, just to make sure it would still turn over even though it's been in the garage since we went on break (we don't have engine block heaters like they do up north but could). we'd be out of school for sure had this not been the xmas break- hope your lettuce and porch plants survive.

    1. No basement here, just pipes under the house which is not that well protected. I really never want to live any place where a windshield scraper is a necessity. Oh Lord. How do you manage?

  7. two more nights they say of us dipping into the mid-20s but I don't think it's gotten as cold as they say. haven't woken up to frozen water in the birdbath once. still will be glad when it's gone, this cold weather. we spent new years day with mimosas and pancakes for breakfast and binge watching Game of Thrones and so now you know my post coming up.

    1. Plenty of ice here this morning in the bird bath and the chickens' waterers. I had to give them some warm water. I do not have the blood for this sort of foolishness.

  8. As someone who was raised in the more humid tropics than Florida, when Tampa gets down in the forties with wind that can cut right through a person, I hibernate with leftovers. I totally get you needing to stay at home alone. Like our mutual friend Birdie, I am an HSP which means that too many people for too long wears me out and my becoming an old crone batteries just don't last the way they did at 25. I wish you the best in the new year and love August's hippie overalls.

  9. Over here on Florida's Gulf Coast it's colder than a well digger's belt buckle! Thirties overnight and high forties during the day. And a 30 m.p.h. wind that hurts to the bone. Did I mention that we're in a 30-year-old mobile home that is NOT insulated for Arctic weather? A couple kinds of soup and anything I need the oven for are on our menu this week.

  10. Ah, Cozumel! I remember it so well! (Hey, that rhymes!)

I love August's hippie overalls. I don't think I'd get sick of dinosaurs but I have a low threshold of tolerance for cars and sports equipment.
