The Absolute Most First World Of All First World Problems

Glen and I met up with Lon and Lis in Monticello today at the Mexican restaurant. As Lis said, it feels like being retired neighbors who can just meet up whenever! And so it does. I think she should consider that house for sale on Main Street in Lloyd because then we really would be.
I know she's never leaving Gatorbone. Her heart and soul are there and so are Lon's.

We had good food, good conversation. The men do tend to talk about their stuff while Lis and I talk about our stuff but that's okay. We go back and forth between that and then all four of us together. I guess we have a pattern now, the four of us. It is so good to be with them.

After lunch we decided to hit up Wag and I found my treasure right away. Six gorgeous wooden salad bowls for fifteen dollars.
Come to mama, babies.

Are they beautiful or what?
Here's a funny story.
Back in 1978, and I am sure of that because it was right after May was born, I bought four salad bowls that I had been lusting after at the hardware store in Monticello. At that time, the hardware store doubled as an almost-everything-else store and you could buy toys, rocking chairs, pots, pans, cooking utensils, canning supplies- you name it, they probably had it. Including some wooden salad bowls.
And I got four of them. Those salad bowls have been with me all these years, although the number has been pared down to two. The other two cracked and became unusable. But we still use the two that are left along with some other wooden salad bowls that I bought at the Methodist thrift store in Roseland.
Here's one of the Monticello hardware store bowls.

As you can see, that one has a crack in it but it still serves us well when we want a snack of peanuts in the shell or something like that. It does exactly what a bowl is meant to do- it holds things.

And the thing is- that hardware store was in the exact same building that Wag the Dog is now in. The store took up the whole block front, whereas Wag only takes up about half of it, but still, same building, just many years later.
And of course the hardware store is long gone and the tacky places that opened which caused it to close its doors are also gone, but those are not even a memory.

I feel very, very pleased with my new bowls. Now-here's the question I am having, buying these new things that are supposedly for the cabin- do I take them to the cabin or do I keep them here and take things I already have to the lake? I mean, that would be fine but you know how emotionally attached I get to my things. I mean, I just spent many words talking about my forty-seven year old salad bowls and I had to restrain myself from talking about how much I love my Roseland thrift store salad bowls. I also love the wooden bowl I make my salads in and it has a crack in it but not so wide that the olive oil escapes. I need another wooden bowl to make my salads in at the lake and I just looked up large bowls by the same company that made the bowls I got today (David & Carey International) and they have one but it costs $79 and I think, eh, matchy-matchy, who cares?
All right. But as you can see- the things I love are the things I love. I am not an unfaithful lover of either my husband or my salad bowls. Which makes it sound as if the decision should be easy- take the new bowls to the lake! But, but...they're so pretty!

Oh god. I'm crazy.

And then, THEN, Glen and I went to the antique store where I freed  Dorothy Anne from the dark, musty shelf where she was hidden away for so long. Glen likes this shop. They sell some car and farm related things he likes to look at.
When we walked in, Glen noticed, before I did, a very large rug. He's been talking about how we're going to need rugs to bring color to the cabin. "What do you think about this rug?" he asked.
"I like the one next to it better," I said.
The one he'd noticed first was mainly blue and probably fairly old and thus valuable. I don't know squat about rugs but I did know that the other rug was a color that made me happy.

I'm pretty sure it's a Chinese wool rug, not very old, certainly not antique, and it looks to be in excellent shape.
Long story short, Glen asked the store guy how much they were asking for it and the number he gave us was so much lower than I had thought it would be that I actually said, "In dollars?"
What did I think? It was going to be rupees? Or yen?
I honestly thought that the number was going to have another zero on it.
And so, as we looked around the store we discussed the rug and I finally said, "Look, we're not going to find anything nearly as nice to cover that much area for that price."
And he agreed that was true and so, we have bought a rug. It's still at the store, but we'll be picking it up soon.

This does feel like a start for me. It can either go in the bedroom or the living room and I think I'd like it in the bedroom. It can be MY rug. The rug that makes me happy. It is thick, and soft, and the colors please me very much.
So that is that.
I can go from here.

Clean sheets, martinis, a supper of Mexican restaurant left-overs for him and a salad and leftover grouper for me. Too bad we don't have any of the okra and tomatoes from last night but we ate them all. I've always made my okra and tomatoes with canned tomatoes and making them with fresh cherry tomatoes was a revelation. So sweet, so fresh, so damn good.

While I was picking beans this morning, I almost picked a very green anole by mistake. Luckily he was too fast for that nonsense. But it made me laugh. He did rather resemble a bean.

We shall not at this moment discuss the boat Mr. Moon has bought which needs to be picked up in Texas.
The man is living the dream. And hey! It's his birthday on Sunday and I definitely do not need to figure out what to get him this year.

Sigh.

Love...Ms. Moon

  2. I love the color palette on that rug...it is so YOU! Although I have a rug that had that fringe/tassel stuff and hated it, I cut it off. Always stayed tangled. Hopefully you will have better luck. So glad you are finding pretty things to add to the cabin that you love..maybe your heart will change about it in time. The bowls are beauties!

    1. It's so funny you cut the fringe off your rug. I don't care if it's tangled or not. I am trying, Angie. I really am.

  3. Piece by piece you are collecting collecting the things that will make Glen's dream cabin a place where you can be happy too. I knew it would happen.

    1. I am truly hoping that the opposite does not occur in which I dislike staying there so much that it makes me start to dislike the things I am buying for it.

  4. I get your conundrum. You might feel at home with your own stuff from your house that you have now, but you also might be excited to go to the cabin with the new wooden bowls (which are fabulous!) that make you happy. It's a toss-up. I feel like mixing old (meaning what you have now), with the new might be fun. No idea. Just my first thought. No idea. I think there's no right/wrong answer?

    1. And honestly, it really doesn't make a dime's worth of difference.

  5. He bought a boat? I guess my husband does have his upside, he's never bought a boat. Not that I have anything against boats, but where we live, there's not much use for boats year round, just the few months in the summer.
The salad bowls are lovely and I'm glad you're slowly getting things for your cabin by the lake. The rug is very pretty too. You'll need some chairs for your porch, some nice throws and pillows. I still think the interior would be a lot nicer painted white, brighten up the place.
I'm glad you had a nice day.

    1. Glen has bought many boats over the years. As we speak, his biggest boat is being hooked up to the truck of the guy who has bought it. The boat in Texas is very stable and made more for lakes than oceans. He needs the stability for his balance problem due to the neurological situation he has going on. So. I get it.
There are chairs on the porch. And a nice porch swing. But I do need a table.

  6. I would have snapped up those bowls ! They are gorgeous! Perfect size and great price, Keep them at the house and send the bowls that you are not fond of to the log house. That is advice you did not want! I worked at a chinese shop years ago, part owner , and bought a rug , same color as yours, hand carved wool from China before it was favored nation. it was only 4"X6" and cost a LOT!!! I think it was stored in Dennis's storage unit and eaten...so sad. I am glad to see yours!

    1. I do like the bowls I have here, though! I think I'll take the new ones there. I don't fucking know.
Yes. Those I had one of those Chinese rugs before too. Bought it way back. My family (very young then) and the dog basically trashed it. That too, was sad. And it cost a lot.

  7. You could take the bowls back and forward to the cabin! Then you'll have it both ways.
That's a nice rug you picked.

    1. Oh, I don't care enough about the issue of the bowls to go to that much trouble. Really, a bowl is just a nice thing to eat a salad from.
      I love the rug.

    2. Now I see that. Of course! My brain just hasn't been in humor mode lately.

  8. I just spent ten full minutes staring at those bowls and wishing they lived in my kitchen. The rug is very, very nice too.

  9. Those are great bowls. What a find! And the rug will make the cabin feel more like home. Oh, please do discuss the boat that needs to be picked up in Texas! I'm sure there's a story there. (You're living my future, unfortunately, because Dave constantly makes noises about wanting a boat.)

    1. I thought about you a lot yesterday when we were shopping. When we went upstairs at that big antique store, they still had that pretty pink glass ware that you said reminded you of your sort-of-adopted grandmother/babysitter. That's where we got the rug.
Those bowls were so underpriced. Oh well!
At least you and I can commiserate about our husbands and their boats.

    2. It's cool to be able to picture these shops when you write about them now! I remember that glassware. :)

  10. I prefer the green rug too, so I'm glad you got it. As for the bowls, I would keep the new ones at home and send the old stuff to the cabin. Men really don't care about this stuff as much as women do so win/win!

    1. Glen cares very much about stuff, just not the kind of stuff I care about! But you're right- things like rugs and salad bowls don't generally make them too excited.

  11. I love those bowls (and the old one). The rug, although I’m not a blue person when it comes to home furnishings for some reason, is a beauty. Yes, I’d buy for the cabin with the new wood dock. Give yourself reasons to feel comfortable and welcome there.

  12. The bowls aren't my thing ( wouldn't go in the dishwasher for starters!!) but I love the colours in the rug.....just beautiful.

    1. I don't mind washing wooden bowls by hand. If they're salad bowls, a little left-behind olive oil is good for them. That's my theory, anyway.

  13. You found some lovely pieces when you were out shopping - the bowls and the rug are terrific. You will figure out the best home for the bowls and you can always change your mind if you don't like your first decision! No worries!

  14. Seems like the new rug and the lovely salad bowls have taken on a symbolic quality that is tied up with your feelings about the new lake house. Their presence in the new property will assist your emotional transition. You also need a pre-loved rocking chair so that you can sit on the verandah and watch the sun going down... just as senior citizens are meant to do in their golden years.

    1. There are two rocking chairs on the porch there already, I believe. Also, a very nice porch swing which I have already spent some time in.
I am very much giving the bowls and rug symbolic and emotional meaning. You are right.

  15. Great Rug! I think the bowls will make you happy wherever they are, And your tootsies will be happier with that pretty rug. I echo the comment above about a rocking chair or maybe two

  16. So the rug in the picture is the one you bought? It's gorgeous. I love those colors. I'm so glad you bought it. I would have too. Glen bought a boat? Doesn't he have a boat? And it's in Texas? Where in Texas? Anywhere close to me? But I don't suppose you'll be going to get the boat.

I have two small salad bowls that I bought at an art fair from the young couple that had hand turned them when I was married the first time. Been using them for 5 decades.

    1. Yes. The rug in the picture is the one we bought. We definitely made a good choice there.
Yes. Glen bought a boat. I'm not sure where in Texas it is but no, I'm not going.
Wooden bowls will last a long, long time if taken care of.

  18. One of the blessings of not enough cupboard space is that it does curb my wanting all of the things - and if I forget, the dilemma of where to store anything bought reminds me. I am impressed with 47 year old bowls. I do think that the cabin problem is larger than a bowl. I do like that the rugs may help you in finding a pathway to accepting that the cabin is in your husband's life and perhaps going to that place with him on occasion, but I think that you need to centre yourself in that house for a quiet portion of time to find what it says that the two of you need to start your own relationship with it. Then you will know what bowls.

    1. The cabin does have a great many cabinets. Well, plenty, anyway. I do not WANT to fill them up. Then my kids are just going to have to deal with two houses to clean out.
I definitely do have to find a way to truly accept that cabin as part of Glen's life and that's all there is to it.

  20. Those are some lovely Wooden Salad Bowls and you've gotten great use out of the ones you had previously. Glad your Guy is getting his Birthday Boat and finding lovely things for the Cabin to make it cozy and inviting.

  21. Love the blue of that rug! And yes, a start! The bowls are gorgeous, too. Bring them home to Lloyd and enjoy them there for a while, and then later, when the cabin is habitable, you can take them there.
