I've mentioned that Levon is currently somewhat obsessed with basketball. There's some little kid you can see videos online of whose name I cannot remember and cannot find who is Levon's new inspiration. Levon spends as much time watching the child's videos as his parents will allow him. A very good coach is involved.
Inspired by these videos, Levon has made himself what I'd call a worksheet of things he needs to practice. I am quite impressed by this worksheet which was on the counter top at Jessie's house today when I went to meet up with her to go floor-covering shopping. Glen and Vergil were at the house with a friend of ours and a guy Glen met at the local marina diner over there who works in the kitchen. Glen and Vergil's main goal today was to set up the Star Link internet and cell receiver or whatever the hell it is and yes, I know that Elon Musk is the owner of that company but that's the only option out there. They got that going very quickly and my husband called me a little after ten this morning. Those men got up early and got to work early. The phone connection sounded great and I am relieved that we now have phone service.
The marina guy got all the carpet pulled up in two hours.
TWO HOURS!
Supposedly the cement underneath is in very good shape, no cracks. And we still haven't figured out what we're going to use in place of the ugly brown carpet. Jessie and I first looked at the vinyl/wood/laminate flooring which I really do not want to do because MORE WOOD.
This did not completely offend me though.
It's almost a blonde, not a beige or brown. Still- more wood.
We are also considering cement coating but there was no place for Jessie and I to go look at examples of that. More research is needed there.
And then we went to a floor covering place that has carpet. Lots and lots of carpet. And some of the colors are so pretty. I think we were both charmed.
The main problem with the flat, glass-top stove for me is that cast iron will scratch it. Do I care if it gets scratched? Well, yes, a little bit. The main selling point according to the salesman is that the glass top stove can produce much higher heat. I rarely, if ever, cook on high heat and never on super high heat. So that is not a plus in the positive column for me.
If you feel like it, could you give me your opinion of the radiant heat stove tops if you use them? I know there are also induction heat stove tops but that looks like way more fanciness than I need or want. This stove will be used for basic cooking and baking and need I remind you that if necessary, I could cook on an open fire?
Well, theoretically. I would rather not.
I was thrilled and I was nervous. What the hell am I doing? And I thought about the first time I was prescribed antidepressants and how I felt the same way. A mixture of guilt and shame, hope, curiosity and determination to take care of myself.
I put everything away, the vials in the refrigerator, the syringes on top of the kitchen hutch, watched the video, and decided that I would rather wait until tomorrow for no good reason. I was discussing all of this with Jessie via text and she said that if it was her, she'd just do it now.
As Jessie is the boss of me (and who isn't?) I considered what she'd said and realized there was no reason not to draw up that clear liquid in the syringe, stick in my thigh, and push the plunger.
It was the first time I've ever injected myself in my life. Now see- if I'd just used heroin, this would be no problem at all but no, I have not. I did think of Keith Richards as I sent the needle into my thigh. Once again, dear Keith has helped me in a difficult situation.
He even said, "He's not a talented guy." And then proceeded to issue what appears to be a veiled threat to The Boss about how he better keep his mouth shut or see what happens when he comes back to this country. And because there is so little to say about Bruce Springsteen which is negative, he criticized Bruce's skin, calling him a "prune of a rocker."
I can't see any reason for a stove that won't use cast iron. I have spoke.
ReplyDeleteI use cast iron on mine. Just don’t abuse it. And there is a product can’t remember name made for cleaning them. It’s a thin white paste that works great on any scuffs - disappear. MS Nell
ReplyDeleteMy cast iron has not scratched
ReplyDeletemy stove top at all. I bet you will like it.

I have a flat top and I love it. I got it because it adds extra counter space to my kitche, when it's not in use. It's easy to clean. I use cast iron. I don't care if it gets scratched and if I have to, I take comet to it, to get it good and clean.
ReplyDeleteI have a thought about all the wood in the house, and I'm sure most people wouldn't like the idea, but paint the wood. It would brighten up the inside a lot.

And trump, the man is a mental midget, a monumental moron, or maybe it's just dementia and the loss of his executive function.
Oh, I really like the blonde, laminate flooring! If I remember correctly, the logs in the cabin are a similar light color. And you could always get area rugs in the green/blue/teal colors that you love to help break up all the wood tones. A word of caution on the concrete flooring, I have a friend that has that for her flooring and she hates it bc it's so hard to stand on. No cushioning at all. I believe the laminate does have some cushioning/padding under it. The concrete flooring does look good though and is easy to maintain but I know any time after walking around WalMart, Lowe's etc my back always hurts from walking on all that concrete. If you or your girls have a Pinterest account you could search for "cabin interiors" and get some ideas. Even just Googling will bring up some good stuff. If that interest you at all. Just my opinion, we all got 'em.
ReplyDeleteGood for you on jumping in on taking the shot, why wait? Those old nursing skills came right back to you, didn't they? I make Paxton give me my shots bc he is diabetic and an old pro at shots and I just don't want to. I'm a chicken shit but I would if I didn't have him. I hope all goes well!

i am *all electric* here.- no other option....glass top stove and my cast iron pans have not scratched it one bit. As mentioned....I use stove top glass cleaning cream....works like a charm. I could see a blondish wood for your floors.....or...one of the beautiful green/sage shades for carpet.. at least you now have phone/cell service there.....which is great! Happy Friday!

Basketball is a great interest. Good for Levon, he's got his plan.
ReplyDeleteInduction/glass cooktops are great and easy to clean. I bought Thermador and love it.
Consider a Webber gas grill for cooking over a flame.
Wall-to-wall carpet harbors dust and bugs. I avoid it and my allergies thank me.
Everything I hear says Star Link is a very good product.
I sincerely hope Donald HAS awoken the Kraken and that the Kraken takes him on. And then he loses. 'nuff said
ReplyDeleteCarpet might just be a good option for flooring, just nt that awful mission brown 70s colour. Personally I like a couple of those you showed very much, left to right, I like the green second from the bottom in the first column and the teal blue fourth from the bottom in the second column. I can't have carpet myself unless I'm prepared to thoroughly vacuum on a daily basis (allergies and cat hair) and I absolutely will not do that.
I have an electric stove and hate it more than I hate kale, but I'm stuck with it, it doesn't have coils like older stovetops, but solid plates instead, I'll email you a photo. My oldest daughter has an induction cooktop and it's the est thing I've ever seen, though for myself I'd always choose gas if I had a choice because that's what I grew up with and always had until I moved here. So pleased to hear you have a phone connection at the lakehouse now.
I agree with you on the stove. I hated it when we had induction and couldn't wait to get rid of it, which happened pretty quickly when my husband threw a saucepan at it and broke it! We don't have gas mains here either so my hob is a six ring with gas from a bottle in the garage (it's what most houses in our village have)! But how exciting to be shopping for the new house all while being far away from the mess when they install everything!
ReplyDeleteI do like the word floor displayed, but yeah, more wood? There are also porcelain floors in all looks. Easy to clean, durable... I love them. I would ALWAYS listen to Jessie. So glad you got that first shot out of the way. Is the lake house getting at least a little more interesting now? (Just hoping.)
ReplyDeleteI think carpet can actually be quite nice as long as it's very low pile, even a Berber or something like that. Then I don't feel like it's never clean, which I feel with deeper rugs. I would agree that a wood floor in a wood house seems like a whole lotta wood.
ReplyDeleteLevon clearly inherited Glen's basketball genes!
Isn't gas in bottles an option in your part of the world? I have it and love it. Gas is THE superior option accordign to me. No scratching, no (almost) heat when it's turned off. In short reliable.
ReplyDeleteI do not remember what you had as floor options - cork is nice, soft and an easy clean ... but then I do not like carpets.
You didn't mention roll vinyl (which I have in my kitchen and big bathroom, I like it, easy to clean) as an option or ceramic tile (which I have in the little bathroom and the area between my bedroom and my workroom which I also really like) or saltillo tile (which I love period) which we had in the family room, kitchen, and breakfast room of the house I grew up in. If you use ceramic or saltillo tile (or I guess even roll vinyl) you can get area rugs to soften it in the seating areas. Carpet for me, no matter how nice the color swatches in the store, in a big NO.
ReplyDeleteI always cooked on gas until we moved into this house and it came with an electric stove. I prefer gas and if we ever replace the stove I'd get a gas one though it would have to be converted to propane since natural gas isn't available in the county where I live. I just don't like the look of those glass topped electric stoves. I suppose they're easier to clean if something boils over though.
Do you have sand at that cabin? That's the only reason I would think twice about carpet. It is so nice to have Jessie helping you out with the floor decisions. Good job on the syringe injection, Mary, brave woman!
ReplyDeleteI'll be interested in how that injection made you feel; what reaction you had, if any!
ReplyDeleteWhere I live, it's all electric in this residence! Can't trust old folks with gas, they'd probably blow the place up!
I had the coil. Something spilled and I couldn't get to it. Eventually it caused a fire on the stove top. I was not a fan of my first glass top. I recently replaced it and have had no issues at all.
ReplyDeleteI would look at samples of the roll linoleum
