The Older I Get, The More I Want To Be Outside

The other night as I walked through the back porch to get to the bedroom, I found Maurice in a pot. To be specific, the pot where my ginger was beginning to sprout. Now, I know cats like to get into small spaces. This is one of their most well-known proclivities. However, I have never seen Maurice try to squeeze herself into a small anything and definitely never in a pot. Glen said she was still there when he came to bed which was quite a while later. When I got up the next morning, she was in our bed so I guess she eventually decided to opt for comfort, rather than...whatever she was getting out of being in that thing.

Today was at least ten degrees cooler than it has been and the humidity was a low (for us) 41%. And so I decided to spend as much of the day in the garden as I could. And I did.
What a pleasure it was!

I do believe this is the prettiest garden we've ever grown. And it is quite productive, too, at least so far. Mr. Moon has done most of the really hard work but I do my part as the one who weeds, picks the beans, serves up the vegetables, and does the preserving. What I mostly did today was weed and then I mulched the areas that needed it most. A garden can never have enough mulch to suit me. It really helps with the weeds and as the leaves break down, they enrich the soil.

So I did that today and it did wear me out and I did sweat a lot, even if it was cooler, but I enjoyed it and now feel as if I have accomplished something meaningful.
For us, at least.

The first zinnia of the ones I planted in the garden bloomed today.

I have a nice size strip of them running all down the south end of the garden and I think in a week that will be a glory to look at.
Last year I had some leftover zinnia seeds and I just threw them on the dirt in the little kitchen garden and smashed them down with my feet. They bloomed and this year the volunteers have come up and they are looking good too.

I love that color.

Here are some less vibrant ones but still sweet. I always say that zinnias are the happiest flowers and I believe that. They are happy to blossom in all of the crayon colors and they are so happy to be alive that they come back again and again and again, year after year.

As do the phlox.

Talk about vibrant! I have these all over the yard and pretty soon that color will be showing off everywhere.

And I think that's about it. I'm making a sort of slaw with vegetables and tofu for our supper tonight along with a sesame miso dressing. I asked Mr. Moon if he'd be okay with having tofu for supper and he said, "Sure. As long as it tastes like meat."
"Well, it's not going to taste like meat," I said.
"What's it going to taste like?" he asked.
"Good." I said. "It's going to taste like good."

I hope I'm not lying.

Love...Ms. Moon

  3. Growing cats in pots now, huh? Maurice was just being a 'cat' and all that entails. I used to find my cat in the weirdest places.
Your weather looks lovely. I had a winter coat on today when I did my walks. I hear now it's to be in the high 80's by Wednesday. Also just read we're to have intense heat this summer. It's to be a doozy. This in in Ohio! Yikes!
The zinnias and phlox are beautiful.

    1. And remember we had snow last winter? Good Lord. We have certainly fooled around with the earth's control panels, haven't we? Can't wait for hurricane season to start here. Oh wait. It started today.
      Sigh.

  4. Maurice is perfect. Your garden is going to explode. I love the low humidity there. Right now, we are getting bad air from Canada. They hate us. Don’t blame them! -Nicol

    1. They would be within their rights to blow all their bad air down to us.

  5. Your garden looks like it could feed a small army. It's beautiful, especially the zinnias. I have carrots, beans, garlic, and chives all coming up, and the zinnias that I planted so long ago in march are blooming.
We're in the middle of building both a tree fort and a new shed. There is wood and tools everywhere in our small back yard. I managed to whack my head on the old shed when I pulled it over to removed the roof. Fortunately I have a hard head.
It was hot as hell hear today but we just had some rain and it's cooled off thankfully.
    Have a wonderful day.

    1. It is so very mysterious to me that you guys can get so hot so fast.
Should you be wearing a helmet when you're working on these backyard projects? Please, honey. You only have one head.

  6. I had a good laugh at Maurice potted like that! I just got rid of my zinnia bed, spread grass seed over it. This made me sad, but it's gotten too shady now. I love zinnias. Yours are, of course, so pretty.

    1. Zinnias love a lot of sun. They're need it. They don't hide their glory in the shade, do they?

  8. LORDIE that bright fuchia pink Zinnia just about put my eye out! WOW. I love tofu- with ginger and garlic , hoi sin , soy, and a splash of white wine- toss in spring onion and a courgette- . Best thing for a quick bite! Rained all day today until sunset. Glad the wind is blowing the opposite way for the Canadian fires to reach us. this summer is going to be threatening. Heat, fire, and who knows what trump shenanigans ...BUT at this moment all is well.

    1. I used a lot of those same ingredients in my miso/ginger salad dressing. SO good.
Well, enjoy this moment in which all is well. I guess that's about all you can do.

  10. The ginger in the ginger! That pot and soil must have been a cool escape. Did the ginger sprout survive? The garden does look lush, and I love those zinnias and the phlox. What was the verdict on the tofu?

    1. It may have been cooler in the pot but three feet away was the door to come in for the air conditioning. And she knows that.
MY verdict on the tofu was that it was great. I think Mr. Moon managed to choke it down without too much trouble.

  11. we still have the heat on and the heated mattress pad on the bed bc lows here are still in the 40s at night....... I like to think when we hang out on the porch in the wicker chairs or around the card table in the garage we are fully enjoying our house note!

    1. Yes! You must enjoy all parts of your house! Gotta get your money's worth! Change up which bedroom you use! We did that once. It was pretty okay.
I can't believe it's in the forties there at night. Dang.

  12. Maurice sees you tending the flowerpots and likely expects some plant care for herself. Silly girl.
Your zinnias and phlox are glorious. Love the color.
How did you prepare the tofu? I have little experience with tofu.

    1. Maurice is a crazy girl. Not just silly.
I just gently pressed the tofu between dish towels, dried it, cut it into chunks, sprayed it with olive oil spray and air fried it. I really liked it.

  13. I really love your flower pictures. Everything seems to do well in Florida. Even your potted pets. I saute my tofu and throw it in my salads, but really should look up other ways to use it. Except right now, we're trying to use up the meat in our freezer.

    1. The best tofu I've ever eaten has always come from Thai or Japanese restaurants. They know how to do it right.
I made venison chili the other night. It was pretty good.

  14. I think I’ve grown that variety of cat before, looks like she needs repotting! Chuckling at what Mitchell said about a ginger in the ginger. So glad things are working out and you’re adjusting fine.

  15. My zinnias have been outstanding this year, the garden not so much. I never got around to mulching this year though. But yeah, I prefer to be outside when possible. It's so hot and humid now though that if I don't go out early it's almost unbearable and it's only just now June. I did a 10 day river trip with friends one year, outside all day and night for 10 days. The time of year was perfect as far as temperature and humidity. Got back and I couldn't stand to be in the house. Kept going back outside. Took days to acclimate back to living in a house.

    1. I can completely understand that. After being outside for that long and in such conditions, being inside can be confusing.

    Well done!

  17. Ha! Actually, I used to buy something called "tofu crumbles" that tasted a lot like ground beef. Some company in Plant City, of all places, used to make it. Not sure if it's still available.

Your garden is looking great! So glad you had a chance to get outside while the weather was relatively pleasant. I envy your volunteer zinnias. Mine never come up again -- I have to replant with fresh seed. (Which I have neglected to do the past few years.)

    1. Plant City? Not exactly the world capital of health food, is it?
Perhaps our zinnias just come back up because of the heat? They don't freeze to death in the winter? I don't know. It did snow last winter so...
