First Visitors

I started writing a typical post about the day and how the visit to the house had been and I just can't do it.

It was really fun to have the boys and Jessie and Vergil there. That is the truth.

Levon found a 100 foot tape measure. He had that thing wrapped around porch furniture, out the door, around some trees, and back to the porch again. And yes, he did roll it all back up.

I loved it when I asked August what his favorite part about the house was and he said, "The people who live here."
That child.

We all sat down and ate lunch together at the table. Jessie saw a little bitty alligator in the lake. The boys did Mother/Child gymnastics.

Carpet is good for some things.

I took a picture of the dresser I do like.

And Jessie absolutely understood my feelings about the house. She helped me with ideas to make it more comfortable for me. Getting rid of the carpet, choosing a flooring with color, perhaps painting the kitchen cabinets, definitely getting rid of every bit of the 70's horrid wallpaper along with the "early American" towel racks, light fixtures, and switch plates. Tearing out the downstairs bathroom and starting from scratch. Although I will say there's a good toilet in there. So that can stay.
I'd prefer this not to, however.

She even pointed out something I had not realized which is that the formica on the kitchen counters is ALSO in a wood pattern.

This is what I was NOT going to do. Be so damn critical. But in a way, it was comforting to think that it isn't just me being pissy and selfish in my feelings. And let me assure you- Jessie loves her daddy as much as any daughter could love her father on earth and she understands perfectly why he does love this house.
As do I.

This is one hell of a conundrum. And yes, we can do all the work on it, or have it done, to make it more of a house that I can enjoy spending time in. But it's going to take some time and it's going to be a lot and I wish I had a tenth as much interest in the project as my husband does.

The grown-up fellas spent most of the time there trying to figure out the wiring. Neither Vergil nor Glen are electricians but both know enough to be able to realize when a real electrician needs to be called in and that is what the verdict was at the end of the day.

I started a list today of things we're going to need. It went from pot holders, to beds, to a broom, to dish towels, to soap for the kitchen and bathrooms, to a washing machine, and finally a stove.
Under the kitchen sink there is an unopened bottle of Fabuloso, so I could mark that off the list.
I asked the boys what I should add to the list and both of them said, at the same time, "BOOKS!"
And I showed them the notebook I was making this list in and the item I had just that second written down was BOOKS!

And that's been the day. I am sorry but I do not have the energy or wherewithal to discuss Mother's Day so let me just say "Happy Mother's Day" to all who mother. That includes the men who mother. Maybe I'll say more about it tomorrow.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Just another job when you didn't want another job, when you're already jobbed out and you just want to fucking relax.
    I get it.
Hope tomorrow doesn't suck to bad. Hugs and love.

  2. I wonder if you could just look on it as Glen's project and not try to whip up an interest you don't feel? Sometimes visit, often don't. Save your energy for things that interest you?

  3. Agree with Boud. Maybe just do the basics, change the carpet, wiring etc. You have a lovely home that suits you, this could be just a place you visit sometimes

  4. It must have felt good to have Jessie to consult with. You don’t have to do all the deciding about how to fix things alone. Sounds like a one thing at a time proposition, like floors first. Then bathroom redo. Then walls and fixtures. Oh vid it must feel overwhelming. Just writing that I suddenly got overwhelmed. Ok. Floors. Done. But still, Jessie’s validation is not nothin’!

  6. wonderful at least to have the first family meal at the dining room table! That's a start, and a good one! Much to do to make it more comfy....but you've got it figured out....and have capable people (or resources) to help with that. LOVE that dresser! Carpet, light switches......bye bye LOL (and lamps too)

  7. Happy Mother's Day to you too, and to Jessie and Lily and Lauren and anyone I missed out. I also love that dresser. Formica can be replaced and it comes in zillions of colours and patterns as well as plain colour with no pattern. I love the porch swing.

  8. I love the porch furniture. I absolutely adore that dresser. I'm thinking that is quite valuable. Eastlake? I'm no expert, but I would be interested in seeing what that appraises for.

Mary Moon. The thing that I know about you, for a fact, is that you are a creative force of energy. That house is not yet yours, but it will be. You will fill it with your family, and your saints and your quirky collections, and it will become your own. I will be interested in watching your progress.
