The Excitement Around Here Just Never Ends

It's supposed to freeze tonight and because I am lazy as hell, I didn't do what I should have done, which is to at least push my porch plants against the wall and cover them. Some of those plants weigh at least a hundred pounds and even sliding them is a struggle. I did bring in my maiden hair fern which almost died last winter in the house for no apparent reason but came back to life this summer outside.

And I covered up one of my giant begonia plants and as added insurance, I plucked three of its leaves and set them in bottles of water to root in the window of the bathroom off the kitchen which is what you see in the top picture where the hanging crystal is making rainbows dance on the walls. I also brought in my sea grape that I started from seeds I got near the Sebastian inlet. It is not exactly what I might call thriving but it did recently put on a new leaf which gives me hope for it. Lloyd is just not its native country. Poor thing.

Now look at this boy's legs!

It would appear that Levon has sized-out and aged-out on his child's car seat and is now ready for the booster stage of life. I keep car seats in my car because I do sometimes drive them places and August has been using Gibson's old booster seat. The cover for the child's seat I have got a good washing last week and I have yet to put that thing back on and buckle the seat back into the car and of course all of this requires a degree in advanced engineering which I do not have so I used the excuse of Levon not needing the thing anymore to go buy him a booster seat. Those things are not complicated in the least to put in the car. Because I never want to go any farther west into Tallahassee than I need to, I decided to go to Walmart to get one which I knew was a perilous thing for me to do but I told myself that yes, I could do it, and although as soon as I walked into that horrid, horrid place I started disassociating, I focused on finding what I needed and getting out of there. That was mostly successful. The only thing I bought beside the booster seat was two emory boards. Not so bad.
The weird thing was that I kept almost running into other people's carts. I mean, over and over again. Perhaps it was because I wasn't really paying attention the way I should have been. But I kept getting in other people's way. Sometimes the same person two or three times. And then when I went to Publix, the same thing happened! And yes, both stores were somewhat crowded but far from packed.
"Excuse me, excuse me. I'm sorry." I have no idea how many times I said that today. And a few times other people almost ran into me. It's like the stars were aligned in such a way as to cause aisle confusion. Thankfully, I did not actually hit anyone nor did anyone hit me but boy, I was glad to get out of both places.

Here are two cat pictures.

That was what Jack looked like last night when we were just about ready to go to sleep. Doesn't he look demur? He mostly is.

And here's Maurice when she came outside to watch me bring in the groceries.

I like the way her little chest hairs are glowing in the late afternoon sun. Sorry about that dying flower stalk. You know- I don't even notice things like that when I take a picture. That's how non-visual I am.

And...

Guess it's time to make the fruit cakes. This is just about the only part of Christmas that I enjoy. Making fruitcake and eating fruitcake. Go ahead- give me your best shot about how nasty fruitcake is.
I do not care. I love it. And May loves it. And the rest of the family can eat some strudel or something. Whatever.

I just saw some pictures from the memorial service for Rosalyn Carter. It was good to see the former first ladies all together although I sure as hell wish that Melania T. wasn't one of them. The thing that broke my heart were the images of Rosalyn's Jimmy. I would like to say that I don't think they should have put him through that. He is obviously very close to his own death. But I have no idea what his wishes were about being there. And if it was his choice then I respect that.
Bless him. He is doing right by his beloved as he sees that he should.

What a man of honor he was. What a man of honor he still is.

Cauliflower and salmon for supper tonight! Perhaps some green peas too. Oh but things are wild around here when the man is gone. What's next? Eggplant?
It could happen. I bought one today.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Treat yourself to some nice little wheeled platforms (round, square, medal, wood-- whatever you like) to put under your heaviest plants. It will make moving them against the wall nearly effortless. And if you have a piece of beveled plywood to get them over the threshold, you can get them indoors (and out again) without much more effort.
Those of us who live up north in Zone 6 know of which we speak.

    1. What you describe in stores is exactly why I have delivery. I hope you stay warm. It is 45 here now and falling.

    2. But I have so MANY rather huge plants. I got one once, put it under a plant and the damn thing collapsed. Not the plant. The wheeled platform.
e- I do not blame you.

  2. I caught some of the service for Rosalynn ... it was a beautifully done service and when their daughter, Amy, spoke and read the letter from Jimmy to Rosalynn ... I shed a few tears!
I have never known, nor will I ever know, love such as they had for each other! Jimmy is not far behind her ... 😞

      Beautiful.

How I miss making fruitcake. How I miss eating it. No matter where I am, I am the only one who like fruitcake.

I need really big wheelie things. As I said above, I got one once for one of the plants and it collapsed under the weight of the pot.

  6. love the term *aisle confusion*.....I think we've all been there at some point. Levon DOES have the long legs, doesn't he? I did not watch, but saw some photos today of Rosalyn's service.....oh.....Jimmy looks like he is VERY close to joining her....and it would not surprise me one bit if it were a matter of days only , as it probably should be.....bless both of their huge hearts.

  7. I only caught brief glimpses of the service, Jimmy arriving, so near, himself, Amy struggling to speak. That was enough, to pay my respects.

I made wheelie things for a couple of big plants from those self stick casters and a handy piece of wood. One was a cabinet door I'd removed. Easy. Cheap.

    1. That's about all I watched too, Liz.
I'd need a lot of those wheelie things and most of them aren't heavy-duty enough to hold up under their weight. The refrigerator dolly or whatever it's called, works pretty well to move them but Glen does that.

And....my heart almost broke today seeing photos of Jimmy at Rosalynn's memorial.......the poor lonely soul......he will join her VERY soon.....as in.......days, probably.

  9. Fruit cake = Christmas. The End.
I am not doing anything this year for Christmas but I will be eating fruit cake. Sadly not my own but a local charity make amazing ones so win win.
I love marmalade cats but Jack has a special dignity that makes him very special. Don't tell Maurice.

  11. Rosalyn and Jimmy Carter seemed like they were good, honest, decent people. I find it amazing that he ended up in politics.
My mum was a lover of fruit cake and near the end of her life, I took over the making of the fruit cakes, made with plenty of love and rum:)

I wrap my fruitcakes in cheesecloth soaked in rum and re-soak the cheesecloth a time or two before Christmas.

  14. I love that lace curtain in your bathroom. I like fruitcake too as long as it isn't dry. One of the supermarkets here has a nice dark version available all year round. And I used to buy it all year round and now all my pants are too tight. Do you ice your fruitcake or have it plain. I like fondant on mine but the supermarket sells it plain and I'm not buying anymore icing sugar. My cupboard has been without it for three years now. No more frosting or fondant in this house.

I've never even seen iced fruitcake. Maybe we're talking about different kinds of cake.

  15. I saw pictures of the memorial service. It blows my mind that they were married for 77 years -- truly a lifetime!

Hope your plants come through the frost OK. They'll probably be fine unless it gets really, really cold.

Sounds like the stores were busy! Christmas shopping, I suppose.

  16. Fruitcake Rocks
It's the only cake l will eat! My grandma used to make it. Every wedding birthday Christmas christening cake etc was a marzipan and iced fruit cake.. You could buy it anywhere in the UK. Now you can find a little piece in a little plastic thing around Xmas but mostly we have adopted the American sponge for wedding cakes etc. It's a step too far of our Americanisation l think!. A moral outrage. Wish l could taste some of yours Haven't had home made fruitcake in decades. I can't bake. l was as much use at it as a wet dishcloth before l was disabled. . You and May have it right. Loads of love from the UK Maggi xxx

    1. I had to google the marzipan-iced fruitcakes. We never ice them over here. Or at least not that I have ever seen. I would definitely try a piece but I don't think I'd make one- too over the top for me.
My life (and health) would be a lot better if I'd never learned to bake and/or was not very good at it. I'm not great but what I bake tastes pretty good.
      Love back to you, Maggi!

    2. I don't like the marzipan and icing. Used to take it off lol. But that's how it wà you had wedding Christmas birthday etc cake and underneath all the pomp and ceremony was a beautiful fruitcake with sherry and whisky.. Those days are gone You used to have 3 tier webbing cakes. Big bottom layer for guests smaller layer to be put in little box for orders folks are those moved to another country etc. The top layer obvs preserved I alcohol was saved fir first baby's baptism. I want some real fruit cake so much now if l was healthy and rich you would find me on your doorstep drinking gin out of bottle and ranting at passes by till yours was ready! I mean what's an ocean when it comes to a real homemade fruitcake. Have brilliant family time and you and May find a fruitcake corner. Love from now deprived from proper cake Uk xxx

  17. Oh, those cat faces. Such beauties. I LOVE fruit cake. There, I've admitted it. I'm sure Jimmy Carter was at the service out of choice. He was completely devoted to Rosalynn. And I was disgusted when I saw Melania there.

    1. Aha! Another self-professed fruit cake lover!
I think you're right about Jimmy Carter and yeah- Melania. I mean, we had a first lady who did soft porn. Not that there's anything wrong with that but good god.
Both of my cats moved into my house years ago. They both showed up with their luggage and proceeded to start moving the furniture around. And bossing me around. As cats do.

  18. You are visual, very much so. The top photo is gorgeous! Inspiring. Fruit cake is the only reason for Christmas that I can understand. Your fruit cake is the best ever, I ate the entire loaf all by myself, I did not share. Happy baking, Mary, know that your fruit cake is god food. The god of good things.

  19. I absolutely love (good) fruitcake. You have just what my blessed MIL used to make hers, and we made 10 every year. (No Citron!!!) Sometimes she added grated fresh apple. (You are really bringing me beautiful memories of her. I had a stroke this past year, and memories are so good! ) She had 9 children for which, and made 1 to keep at her house. We started about Thanksgiving, and when they were in the pans, waxed paper into the spout, pan all wrapped in Reynold's Wrap, tied paper over the top. Then she would steam each one in her heavy canner, then put them in a low oven for a couple hours. They were huge -about 9 pounds and decorated to a T! I miss her so-- I got the best MIL in the world! Just helping mix and fix those beautiful things was an honor. I hope you got a MIL you miss, Mrs. Moon. I hear it's pretty rare but we crocheted, fried fish we caught, sewed, gardened, canned and cooked and much more. She should be in the MIL Hall of Fame!

I hope youall had a grand Thanksgiving!

    1. I bet that fresh apple is good in fruitcake. I love to make a nice spiced apple cake. Your mother-in-law sounds like an amazing woman! The story of her making all those cakes reminds me ot the stories I've heard about my husband's grandmother. She mixed cake batter in buckets! So yes, I do have a MIL that I miss. Actually, I've had two pretty great mother's-in-law.
I'd love to hear more about yours.
We did have a great Thanksgiving. Thank you, Bluebird.

  23. my maidenhair always dies back when I bring it in for the winter and always revives once it's outside again. this summer was so brutal that it wasn't doing well where it usually sits outside the back door so I moved it into deeper shade and right now it's the biggest, fluffiest it has ever been. no freezes predicted here yet so it's still outside as are other things.

that boy isn't just outgrowing his car seat. those pant legs are about 4 inches too short.

    1. Yeah. I guess the maidenhair doesn't like the dry heat of the heater. Mine was in shade too, underneath the giant begonia which is underneath a Bradford pear.
