That's what the sky looked like at 9:00 this morning in Tallahassee. I was overwhelmed by the drama of it. Every time I stopped at a light I took another picture.
So even though the sky looked like that and it was about 50 degrees in the sun and there was sun, we had been been promised "wintery precipitation" including snow and by god, everyone wanted it.
Lots of people lost their damn minds. You'd think we were facing eight feet of snow along with tons of ice, falling directly onto our roads and yes, we are all going to die and so we need to get to Publix and buy everything we'd buy for a hurricane but more stuff because we don't really know what you need for snow preparation so best to buy everything. There were cars lined up, waiting for a parking place in the lot.
SNOWPOCALPYSE!
Y'all. My brain is still so scrambled and I am still so far away in space where if you scream no one can hear you and I am no good for anything.
Wait, WAIT! I forgot to say that Mr. Moon did indeed get home last night, before midnight, and I was so very glad to see him. I believe he had an excellent time.

It was very difficult to get out of our bed early this morning to go to pottery but I did and it was pretty cold, far colder than fifty degrees but I didn't want to let Jessie down. I was absolutely in a fog in class and actually dropped a jar of glaze but caught it in my lap and thankfully, I was wearing my apron and so it wasn't a disaster but that's the sort of things I was doing.
We went to lunch after class, to a Thai/Asian place and it was good and then we went to the Publix right next door but I had to leave and wait outside because there were too many people and I just kept getting in the way. We were running a little late and Jessie had to pick up the boys early because of Snowpocalypse and I went with her. I was so glad to see them. They were a little glad to see me. August especially didn't want me to leave because he felt the need to discuss Minecraft with me which I know nothing about and have no interest in discussing but I think his mother is probably exhausted by the thought of discussing Minecraft. When August latches on to something, he doesn't let go.
Here are some pictures.
Sophie really is the sweetest love. She such an excellent cuddler.
In the last few hours the temperature has indeed dropped and we are now getting sleet, I guess. Wintery precipitation, as promised. The kids are texting that it's snowing in Tallahassee but none here yet. Small frozen bits of water are definitely falling from the sky but it's not snow. I didn't buy one thing at Publix so I hope that we don't die of deprivation.
Pretty sure we won't.
I'm cooking redfish tonight which Mr. Moon brought back from Louisiana. I have very little experience with redfish but I'll do my best.

The soup last night turned out to be pretty delicious and the bread was not brick-like and the flavor of it went with the soup very well. Not a failure.
Here's a Florida snowball.
Hopefully we shall all survive through the night.
Love...Ms. Moon
P.S. It is now snowing in Lloyd.
P.P.S. Rachel just sent a picture of her brother standing outside in Pensacola which is west of here and I swear to god, there are at least eight inches of snow on top of his car.
This might not be a joke.
This might not be a joke.
We had our second "big" snow in Atlanta today. This time no ice and not even two inches of snow yet. Everyone is glad schools canceled. We are warm inside with plenty to eat and a wood stove and lots of wood if the electricity goes out.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I'm hearing, it's not a joke at all. 10 inches of snow in Louisiana. Glad Mr. Moon is home. A girl needs a warm body to curl around in weather like this.
ReplyDeleteNo new snow here....but....temps below zero tonight (-11) and wind chills predicted to be -27 degrees! Good, old NE Ohio. Living close to Lake Erie
ReplyDeletewe get those 'lake effect' thingys that come down from Canada. Glad Mr. Moon got back OK. Stay warm.
Paranormal John
In a state with few plows and a lot of drivers inexperienced with snow, home's best right now.
ReplyDeleteIn Galveston (which is an island in the Gulf of MEXICO) we had a couple of inches of sleet and snow overnight and into the morning. Here, too, everyone goes into hurricane prep mode with the additional stimulus of the last significant winter event we had in 2015, the one where Ted Cruz fled to Cancun while a couple hundred of his constituents died of hypothermia. Millions of us lost power for long stretches and many had no water thanks to burst pipes. In Galveston the city turned off everybody’s water. It was a traumatizing experience and led to people going overboard when anything similar is in the offing. Snow should be gone by tomorrow afternoon and we’ll get back up into the 50s and 60s. You’ll get through what’s aimed at you fine, just use your heads and don’t get on the road with all the people who have no idea how to drive in snow and ice and don’t have the benefit of snowplows. Margaret
ReplyDelete2021, that’s when Ted fled. Margaret
DeleteIt's snowing here as I type, and has been since around 4pm. It's sticking, too. I can't wait to see how much we end up with in the morning.
ReplyDeleteThis morning, the weather station talked about Tallahassee, FL getting snow and how FL is not set-up to deal with snow.
ReplyDeleteOn Monday we woke up to 5 inches of fluffy snow. We got lucky with only snow and no ice. It is 13 degrees F.
The roads are fine, and the schools are open.
Stay warm everybody!
Well Mary, I must say that it's been good to know ya...surely you will be a popsicle by morning.Snow on the ground in Lloyd and satan himself , leader of the most powerful country on earth at this time! The snow will melt, the country will become the least powerful and that is that. I reckon we actually might live through it all . Make a hot water bottle and cuddle in with Maurice..pretty sure she will want that.
ReplyDeleteGlad I'm not so far north as Paranormal John; we're only down to -10 tonight. If it's snowing in Houston (and it is), you're not far behind. Stay in and stay warm. Put Hank's snowball in the freezer. Throw it 4th of July.
ReplyDeleteI feel for the South. This is just so unfair for all of you. But pretty exciting too, I imagine for the young ones. Last summer we had your heat and we squalls right on through October about it. So maybe this is payback? I wouldn't wish it on you guys, though. Heat at least doesn't get 10 inches deep.
ReplyDeleteElectric blanket time!
ReplyDeleteStay warm and cozy! Glad you’ve got your hubby home! Currently 11 degrees here in the mid-Hudson valley, NY, going down to -3 tonightš„¶ xo, Rigmor
ReplyDeleteHere in Michigan it is -3 (feels like -12) with about 3 or 4 inches on the ground. And after cold temps for tomorrow, low of -8, high of 14, the worst is over.
ReplyDeleteHaving seen pictures of your family before I never thought Jessie looked like Lily - but by golly that picture with the dog! You can really see they are sisters, can't you! Oh and enjoy the snow!
ReplyDeleteWell, I hope that you are not having to dig yourselves out this morning. The worst snow I remember was about 15 years ago. 5/6 inches fell during the afternoon and my drive home from work that normally took 15 minutes took me 3 and a half hours! ( we are 25 miles north of London)
ReplyDeleteThat sky does look quite dramatic, here it would herald a thunder and lightning rain storm. It's funny how odd weather has people shopping as if for an apocalypse or something, stocking enough essentials for the next six months, and after that weather has passed, they will go back to normal and keep shopping though their freezers and larders are groaning under the weight of the stockpiles. Rug up and stay warm, spring and summer will be there soon enough.
ReplyDeleteDid Rachel's brother rip that snowball off a snowman? It looks about the right size but where's the other one? I bet the snowman wasn't laughing!
ReplyDeleteLater... Or is that Hank holding the snowman's gonad?
DeleteThe Eastcoast is definitely upside down! No snow here in Massachusetts. One below zero this morning.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was a school kid and complained about the snow and having to go out and so on and my father would get mad at me, it's only water in a different form, what's your problem, he would grumble.
ReplyDeleteZero F here in Toronto, no snow, you can have it. Minus 18 C feels so much colder to me. I was brought up with F so I still have a hard time with our way of doing things in Canada. I am not too bad with warmer temperatures but I am lost with the cold ones. I still cook with the old cookbooks as I prefer pounds and oz instead of grams etc. I never need to stock up as our street gets plowed within hours of a big snowfall so I would only go about a day without getting to the grocery store. When it is 50 degrees here many will be wearing shorts. I am laughing myself silly thinking of people in FLORIDA racing to stock up because of a couple of inches maybe of snow. Gigi
ReplyDeleteLove the photos. Can’t believe your weather. I missed the snow and rain in NYC by one day. But it is frickin’ cold!
ReplyDeleteI still like snow but we're set up for it. I have excellent boots that are nonslip, a fleece mittens and hate, and a long down coat. Our roads are wider here too because when the snow gets plowed out of the way, you lose about a foot and a half on either side of the road for the windrows. I'm trying to embrace winter better this year with some success.
ReplyDeleteI had to chuckle this morning, my husband told me he had read my blog and said he didn't think Mexico was a good idea but next winter, we could go to Disneyland. He's such a control freak and doesn't even know it:) I told him I would take it under advisement.
I forgot, stay warm my friend.
ReplyDeleteMary, I am back in school and don't take a lot of time to read blogs anymore, least of all comment but I have been thinking about you these last few days. Just watching from here is painful. My partner and I decided that we would no longer say the name ****** ***** in each other's presence because that name is vile and we don't say words like that. We can drop the f-bomb and and every other expletive but his mouth is for kissing and building each other up. The real reason is we both battle severe depression and anxiety and are both hanging on by a thread right now. Everything is so dark at the moment. Everything has his shadow. I think about the USA at least 50 times a day. My heart aches for you, for your children and grandchildren. I cry for all the people who are going to be deported back to countries that are going to kill them for leaving and for the teens who will go back and have no other choices except that of gangs and violence. It doesn't help change things, I know. I am crying for anyone who is not a fucking WASP. Lately I have been attending online Adult Children of Alcoholics meetings and finding my sanity there. I am waiting to join one in 14 minutes. They have hundreds of meetings a day so I can join one anytime of the day or night. Fuck, I am rambling. How about something happy? My son loved Minecraft. I remember the long, long (one-sided) discussions about it. One year i bought him this for Christmas and he about died. He still has it!

Okay, Miss Moon. Sending you all the love I have left.
Hope you survive! I remember snow in 1977 in Tampa. THAT was a crazy winter. I don't think we had enough to make a snowball but I'm sure we tried.
ReplyDeleteGlad the soup turned out well and Mr. Moon is home!
Lol - I live in Central Illinois, formerly in Chicago. And EVERY time there is the least threating weather, people run out and clear the shelves- french toast must be popular in inclement weather as bread, milk and eggs run out immediately. I'm 65 years old and have lived through many storms here in IL, and never, ever has there been a period when supply trucks could not get through in a day or 2 to replenish stocks at the local grocery stores. We just sit back and laugh at all the crazies that are clogging up the aisles and parking lots at stores.
ReplyDeleteA daughter just moved to Atlanta, and of course the area is paralized as they are not equipped to deal with snow. New Orleans? good luck with 10 inches of snow there. I cannot imagine how crippling that has to be for a city in the south to deal with that.
I wonder if we have the need to horde before a storm b/c we've lived in capitalism for so long and see that it's collapsing. Pre-storm over-consumption is reaction to our fear of scarcity. Capitalism's fundamental connection to scarcity results from an economic system that is based on the idea that resources are limited. It's become more clear by the day that capitalism exacerbates scarcity by concentrating wealth and resources in the hands of a few, leading to inequalities and limited access to basic needs for many. So we add in the fear of an unknown weather event and we lose our damn minds.
ReplyDeleteWe have very cold here and now a little bit of snow - but less than an inch so no problem for Illinois. We are used to it. Hope all of you southern states will be okay and that your warmer weather returns soon. Stay safe and warm, Mary.
ReplyDeleteI got my grocery shopping done on Sunday as Tuesday is my usual day and I was not going out on Tuesday. The store was busy and the parking lot almost full but no lines and I was in and out quickly. Woke up Tuesday morning to snow drizzle yesterday but still about two inches had accumulated. Supposed to be near 50 today so I imagine most if not all of the snow will be melted before it gets below freezing again tonight.
