Back On The Internet, Back In Life

Candie, our friend and cleaner came yesterday and it was the first time I've seen her since my birthday. She brought me some sweet presents and that sign was one of them.

I love it. Candie knows me oh, too well although she did admit that she was a little worried that perhaps I might find it somewhat offensive.
Of course I did not.
Mr. Moon hung it up for me last night.

We are both doing somewhat better every day. He went to the gym today and I went to lunch with Jessie. Not quite the same but still- we both had outings. Jessie had taken August back to the doctor this morning because the croupy cough he always seems to get with any sort of sickness was getting worse, not better, and he has been started on steroids which is the general path which must be taken. The person who saw August said that he is not contageous (he has no fever) and so could go to school so Jessie took him after the appointment. She said he was so excited to be going.
I asked Jessie if Levon had taken over the first grade yet and she said, "Pretty much." He also pleaded to go to after-school because he wanted to play with his buddies there. Levon is a very social guy. Jessie also said that both boys have been begging to go see their Florida cousins. I don't know if I already told this story but not too far in the distant past, I was with Lily's kids and Owen said, "It would be so cool if all the cousins could come to your house for a sleepover, Mer!"
Excuse me?
But it would be cool. I doubt I'd have to do much beyond supplying them with copious amounts of food. They wouldn't need me at all.
Even still, the thought is a bit alarming. Five wild children, all excited to see each other, could be somewhat stressful to this old grandmother.
We shall see.

Speaking of Owen, I got to see him this afternoon. I had texted Lily to see if she was working as I was going to her Publix. I knew that Wednesday is her day off but schedules do change. Nope, she wasn't working but since I was there, could I bring her a rotisserie chicken? She was making chicken and yellow rice for their supper. Of course I could! And her house is right on my way home. When I got there, I was pleased to see Owen who was already home from school. It sounds like high school is fine with him and I was so glad to see him. I told him, "Owen, not only are you getting taller all the time, you're getting more handsome all the time!" and he is.
He has just recently become a patient of my beloved Dr. Zorn and saw him for the first time a few days ago. Almost my entire family has switched over to Zorn's care including Jessie and Vergil and their boys. Hank and Rachel see him and so do Lily and Lauren.
But the subject had come up because during his appointment, Dr. Z had measured Owen's femur and told him that he will probably grow to be somewhere between 6'4" and 6'8".
That's about what I would have said too.

Owen will be getting his learner's permit for driving next month IF YOU CAN BELIEVE THAT! August asked his mom if Owen will be driving him around after he gets his license to which she replied, "Not right away." When she told me this my response was, "Those boys need to at least be out of booster seats before that happens."
I'm thinking I need to get Owen a few of these before he gets his learner's permit:

He'd like that, right? What fifteen year-old kid wouldn't?

And I guess that's about it. I hope to get out and do some yard work tomorrow. My soul needs it. Glen says that's what he's going to do so maybe we can get some things done out there and go to the river again. Why not? We're under no one's schedule. It's bizarre to me how long it has taken for us to truly realize that. Not work schedules or children's schedules or even social schedules. And although I am the Queen of Guilt, I do not feel guilty about that.

I'm off to make some clam spaghetti. This morning as Glen and I were leaving the house to go to our separate outings, I said, "Let me know if you think of anything you'd like to have for supper."
This is a running joke with us because he can never think of anything but clam spaghetti or white-bean chili when I ask him for suggestions. As all of us who cook know, it's not the cooking part that's hard. It's the deciding WHAT to cook that's the problem.
And a few hours after my request to him to please try and think of something he'd like me to make I got a text that said, "Clam Spaghetti."
And I laughed.
It is just about the easiest thing in the world to make and I'll make a salad to go with it. I picked some Mexican basil and some Thai basil to go in it along with some of the arugula that has somehow managed to sprout and live in this heat.

Just a little handful of that and the herbs will make the salad stand up and dance no matter what else I put in it.

And that is enough.
Oh! By the way- our internet did indeed come on very soon after 6 p.m. yesterday evening. I honestly was so surprised. And pleased, as one might imagine.

Love...Ms. Moon

  2. You did a fine job of getting a Post out with your Phone, but, I'm sure you're relieved to have the Internet back. A nice Salad is so refreshing when it's so Hot.

  3. Sounds like a great day and wonderful dinner. I too love spaghetti with clams.

  4. Love that clam spaghetti.
You could have all those Florida cousins together. They would love it and have a great time, and so would you.

  5. I've never eaten a clam if you can believe that.

    And hoeing AIN'T easy! Haha.

    1. Have you eaten oysters?
I use canned minced clams to make my sauce. So, so easy.
      Hoeing can be tiring.

  6. I've had clams quite a bit but not with spaghetti. I must remedy that.

    1. My first real friend in Tallahassee taught me how to make it and the sauce is so fast and easy you can start your pasta water before you start the clam sauce.

  7. 6'8"?? And probably the rest of the cousins will also be tall.
I would LOVE to read the story that comes after an all cousins sleepover :)

    1. Well, his Boppy is over 6'8". His mama's six feet.
If we have an all cousins sleep-over I might have to write that story from bed the next day.

  8. I so agree with you about cooking versus deciding what to cook! I food shop twice a week, and have always decided which recipes I am going to make and shop accordingly...thus very little waste.

    1. I keep certain staples (for me) at all times and can always figure out a meal but I do like to sort of have an idea when I go to the store about meals I'm going to make.

  9. Oh my, I can't imagine clothes shopping at 6'8!!! I have a couple of friends who are very tall and one was telling me what hell it was to find shoes to fit his enormous feet. This was years ago so I'm sure things have changed and are probably easier in the States but ....! When did that little baby grow so big!

    1. Owen's already having trouble finding shoes that fit. Seriously.

  10. Like Glen, I’d be no help with dinner suggestions. But clam spaghetti sounds delicious and I’ll bet yours is even better. I can just imagine the groan Owen would produce if given that bumper sticker. I look forward to the sleepover stories!

    1. I'm tempted to get one of those bumper stickers and give it to him just for his reaction.
Don't hold your breath for the sleepover stories.

  11. In England the word "hoeing" is used exclusively to describe what you do with a garden hoe. However, I understand that in America the term can have another, ruder meaning. I presume that's why Candie was a little anxious about giving you the sign.

    1. I should have made more of an explanation for my non-American friends as you so often do.
Candie, knowing me well, wasn't too worried about my reaction.

  12. Owen is a handsome boy and he must carry the tall gene that runs in your family thanks to Glen. I've never had clam sauce but it does sound delicious. A sleepover for all the cousins sounds like fun. Magnolia June and you will be the only girls in the house.

    1. Yes. Owen has his Boppy's genes. August and Levon have their dad's side of the family tall genes too. He's over six feet and has aunts that are taller than he is!

  13. When I headed east for THE birthday party (not to be confused with A birthday party) last Friday, I was surprised to see a long line of utility trucks coming from Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio, all headed east, in long lines. I'm not sure where Debby did her damage this far north, but there must have been a lot of it.

  14. I was looking for suggestions for my grocery list and, thank you very much, I will add Linguini with clam sauce to the list! I love that and it is so easy to make. Good idea!
Maybe Lily or Jessie could have the cousins' sleepover at their homes? and you could drop in. Then you will get a good night's sleep when you go home. ;)

    1. I always keep two cans of minced clams for those nights when I just don't feel like doing much cooking.
Lily is good with sleepovers at her house. She provides food and lets them pretty much do whatever they want to. They love it!

  15. I am still stuck on the fact that Owen is old enough to learn how to drive. And that he will likely be up to 6'8'' feet tall. You know who else is going to be tall? August. You can see it already. I hope the little guy is all better now.

    1. Yep. August not only has Mr. Moon's genes via his mom, he and Levon have aunts on his dad's side that are well over six feet tall. Aunts!

  16. not surprising that Owen may top 6feet 4.....and yes, August may possess the tall gene as well! Love Candie's sign gift! And clam spaghetti is something I've made for 40 yrs....so good and easy too! A cousin sleepover sounds fun....but something you'll likely have to recover from for several days after LOL!

    1. I think Owen will be over 6;4".
It's like Candie knows me, right?
I just realized I've been making clam spaghetti for fifty years. FIFTY YEARS! Holy shit.

    2. I can beat you there as I’ve been making it since before I was married and that’s 52 years. I, too, keep minced clams and clam broth on hand, use a little oil, a little chopped onion, a sprinkling of dried red pepper and a little white wine. Started throwing a few sliced mushrooms into the mix a few years ago. I top each bowl with chopped Italian parsley. Margaret

  17. Owen obviously inherited the Moon height genes! It's interesting that you said deciding what to cook is harder than actually cooking it. I never would have guessed that. Dave probably gets frustrated with me because every time he asks me what I want for dinner, I say, "I don't care." I don't help narrow it down, in other words!
