Flowers And Fish- Here I Come

Pottery starts up again tomorrow morning and I spent a little time online today, looking at examples of both flower petal bowls and ceramic fish things, mostly platters and bowls. And what I mainly discovered is that I am far from being the first person to enjoy having fun playing with fishes.

In case you've forgotten, here are what the two fish spoon rests I made look like.

I hope to make a few more happy fish during this session, perhaps even some fish bowls. Not bowls you put fish in, but bowls made in the shape of fish.
I'm sure you understand.
In a way, I was almost indignant to see that my ceramic fish are not unique, but mine will be my own and no one else's. I wouldn't even mind doing a few that are meant to hang on a wall. I mean- I'd hang them on a wall but then again, I'm pretty famous in these parts for hanging anything on a wall.

I also saw some beautiful flower petal bowls. One was a sunflower bowl and I watched the video of how it was made.

The petals in this bowl are made not from different pieces of clay fit into the whole, but delineated by small rolls of clay attached and shaped so that the result looks as if they overlap each other. It doesn't seem to be a simple process and may, in fact, be more work than the way I made my last flower bowl wherein I made separate leaves to attach to the petals.
We shall see.

But the bottom line here is- I am excited to go back to the studio. I am so glad I was finally able to admit that throwing bowls and mugs and pots on the wheel is not going to be in my future, because once I gave that idea up, I was able to let myself go in other directions. That first little fish spoon rest was the product of having forty-five more minutes of a class in which everything I'd tried to do had been a huge disappointment and while looking in the molds cabinet for something to make a slump mold out of, I came across a regular spoon rest and for whatever reason, my mind went to fish.
Ta-Da!
And speaking of fish, I am cooking myself some salmon tonight with spinach and couscous. I am inordinately excited about this. Mr. Moon reports that he will be eating the same supper he had last night which looked like this.

Mer-made soup and a toasted English muffin with cheese.
I am absolutely mystified at where the doily came from.

Well, I better get at it. I have to get up at the crack of dawn tomorrow in order to pick up Jessie and get to pottery on time and that is not going to be easy as I have become evermore slothful each day since the beginning of the holidays.

But it will be worth it.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Those fish are quite elaborate, I can't imagine the time taken to do all that. I like your first spoon rest better than the second one. I remember doilys (doilies?), my mum had them everywhere and these days I almost never see any, even in thrift stores. Not that I want any to use, but a small one or two would make great tablecloths for doll sized tables. And for fancy doll bed covers too. Even doll house curtains.

    1. Those fish are quick to make. The next one I make will probably be more intricate so it'll take more time.
I have a few doilies from thrift stores. It's just hard to pass them up.

  2. There’s a free painting class at our local commision on aging. I told my neighbor that if she wanted to sign up i would go with her. So, I’m very excited about it. I get your joy at going back to pottery. I am NOT a painter but i don’t care. Two hours of wild, colorful painting fun! (I’m particularly fond of your flatter faced fish.)

    1. Somehow they don't seem to be in my mind until my hands get busy with it.

    1. Well, not so sure about that. I do like fish in many different ways and am especially fond of a koi pond or snorkeling over a reef though. And of course, they are tasty and delicious.

    1. Those fishes are really cool! Much more sophisticated than mine. They remind me a bit of fishing lures.

  6. Wish I could get to the point where I accept that I'm never going to be able to sew - but as I'm the president of the club and I like the ladies very much I reckon I'm stuck with it. Unless .... I start taking my computer with me and simply work on stuff for the other club (which takes up a lot of my time). My brain is just wrong-sided for sewing. I love all those colourful fish though. That's right up my alley!

    1. Isn't there something very simple you could make at sewing class? Potholders or napkins or something? One little thing could inspire you to something else.
      Or not.

  7. Great research. I’ll have to share the fish platter SG. His however was in a ceramics studio where the platter itself was already done for him. Still, fun glazing.

    1. I LOVE the glazing now that I've discovered I can paint with it. I've found a type of glaze that has the best colors and is very glossy. Which I love.

  9. Yay to being back in the clay studio...and doing whatever you enjoy doing! That's what creativity is all about. I need to apologize for getting a goddess confused in early Mexico... Tonantzin was the precurser of the Virgin of Guadalupe, not the goddess you mentioned. Now I need to learn more about her!

    1. No, no. Don't apologize. I actually wrote a post years ago in which I talked about Tonantzin and how the Catholics appropriated her for their Virgin of Guadalupe.
Ixchel was the #1 Mayan goddess. She was in charge of a whole lot of things. I just read that Tonantzin was not a specific goddess but that her name was a title for the maternal aspect in any goddess. Hmmm. Wikipedia. I'd never heard that before. Anyway, Tonantzin was, as you know I'm sure, an Aztec goddess. Or whatever.

    1. Thanks, Ellen. It is very nice to not feel that I am a completely inept idiot in pottery.

  11. We've been sleeping later than usual once the time change happened and it is still dark in the morning. I'm glad you are excited about this pottery session. I think I would be more into hand building than throwing too. It's more like sculpture and would be more like model making in wax.

    1. Yes. I'm at the point where it's like, "How many bowls does this world need?" And they all look very much like each other with variations, of course. So I'm liking what I'm doing.

  12. I like your fish. They are rounder and have great expressions. A platter and even a wall hanging sound like great future fish projects.
GM is eating in style at the lake house. The place mat being very old and possibly handmade adds to the loveliness of your special soup made with love and lots of fresh goodness from your garden.

    1. I do not think the doily is a place mat. It's just a...doily. Perhaps it somehow got into the box of things we were collecting to go up to the cabin. I have no idea.

  13. I love your fish. They have personality. (Fish-ality?)
