Someone Got Smart And Made The Movie

This makes me so happy.
They've made a movie out of one of my very favorite novels of all times- Crazy Heart by Thomas Cobb. The book has been out of print for years but maybe they'll reissue it after the movie comes out. It deserves it. I think the novel captured more of what the dark backside of the musician's life can be like than any other I've ever read.
And now there's going to be a movie with Jeff Bridges.
Yes.
This makes me happy.

  1. Now I am looking all over creation to find this book. My friend was in school with T.Cobb, and read Crazy Heart when he was working on it! Small world, no? And dang, I wish J.Bridges would come visit me soon. Heheheh. Yep, make the world even smaller... This is a movie I plan to see.

  3. Swallowtail and Dish- I saw one used copy on Amazon for $45. I would indeed check the library.

  4. Tom Cobb was my creative writing teacher in college! I have a signed copy. We all went to poetry readings and such together. His wife has the same last name as me, though we're not related. How fun to find him on your blog today. I'm so happy for him.

  5. Out of print books are often available at on Ebay and the brilliant ABE books!

    This looks great.

And I love the degrees of separation of all you kindred spirits.

And I LOVE Jeff Bridges. Oh, I want Jeff Bridges to hug me.

  6. Jeff is so the MAN! He will do it justice, and give good performance even if the script turns out not so good... So yay!

  8. http://www.alibris.com/booksearch

has a handful of them starting at $ 3.00 and there is even a first edition available.

One of my heart delights, I will dig my copy in the next few days. We have decided to take down the guest room and turn it into a little library room upstairs. We are going to find some bookcases and go at it, a place to get away to visit with those old friends that still are living inside boxes.

  9. I just saw a feature on this and how good it is supposed to be last night. I love Jeff Bridges. I will be going to see it. Definitely. Especially since you liked the story so much.

    Love you!

  10. I know nothing about this story but will check it out.
I have to say that there are not too many actors I would ever mention as ones who interest me, but I have had a blog post draft for a while about voices and how much they mean to me and how I love his. I would watch a movie of his just to hear his voice but I love his looks and acting too. Thanks for posting!

  13. Bethany- No fucking way! Awesome!
I hope he's getting some $$$ out of this movie.

Ms. Jo- Weird, isn't it? And yes, we would all like Jeff Bridges to hug us. He was, after all, the Dude.

Ms. Fleur- I just hope the script is good.

Technogram- It's not a feel-good book. It's gritty. Which makes it true.

Ms. Allegra- No way! I haven't read the book in a few years (although I have read it at least four times) and so I wondered if my discerning eye would still like it. I am so gratified to hear that you like it too. Sisters in reading. Sending love. Of course.

Ms. Bastard- Well, like I said, it's not a real happy story. Which means it's not going to be all Hollywood. Unless they changed it. They're talking Oscar. Of course. I hope it's good. I really do. I remember when I went to see Prince Of Tides with such hope and they (Barbra Streisand) had made such a desecration of the book. It's made me wary. But I have hopes.

  14. Chances are.

If Jeff took the role, it's probably fantastic. Lord knows he probably doesn't need the money and hell, I don't know if I've ever seen him in anything that wasn't spectacular.

  16. It looks so good from the trailer I saw a couple of weeks ago. I think the movie opened here tonight -- I heard an interview on NPR with the filmaker and he sounded so interesting, too.

  17. I feel like I haven't commented in days--or read up. So, in short, yes I read your comments back, Owen is adorable and I think Sam needs to go to that same woman who took the other ones. Or else, give her Betty. Maybe she can be put out of her misery?

I found a home, and I will blog all about it soon. I am ok.

  18. Happy that you're happy, Ms. Moon. Haven't read the book, but I do hope they reissue it before long so I can read it.

  19. Adrienne- No. That was from Alexandra Fuller's, The Legend of Colton H Bryant. Which is a fine, fine book. But not a novel.

Maggie May- Well, we all like different things but I think it's a book with a lot of painful truth in it.

Michelle R- He does have a great voice, doesn't he?

    Ms. Fleur- Here's hoping.

    Jo- Ha!

Elizabeth- All of a sudden, I see mention of the movie everywhere. Have I been blind?

SJ- Glad to hear you're okay and thanks for checking in to let us know. Sending love your way.

Angie- That would be awesome if they did. I always thought it did not get the attention it deserved.

  20. I just skimmed an article about "older women" not getting roles in Hollywood and it skewing our notions of what "older women" (I guess I am now, at 41) should look like. They mention this movie because there's nearly 30 years age difference between Jeff & Maggie.

So I have to ask since you know the book well - is the age difference an important part of the story? Is it even in the story? Or is Jeff viewed as too virile for a woman his age?

Story here if it interests you: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/19/theater/19sex.html?pagewanted=1&_r=3&partner=rss&emc=rss

BTW, it does not thrill me to no end when people guess my age a decade younger than it is. Why should that be a compliment?

    [And, end rant.]
