I'm Pretty Sure This Will Not Kill The Cat

Let me ask you a few question, please.
Do you come back and look at the comments I have made in response to your comments?
Do you read the comments at all?
Not that I'm planning on not responding to comments. Not doing so would be rude in my book and as I say, I do love a dialogue.
But I was just wondering- do you? Read comments? Come back to see what I have said about yours?
I'm curious.

  1. Are you insane? Of course we do! Everyone does this on your blog, I'm almost positive. That's why your blog is so fun and alive and real. I never ever thought to go back to blogs I've commented on and look for responses until I came here and saw what you were doing. I never thought to comment or answer questions on my own blog until I came here. You've opened my eyes in so many ways. Coming here and finding a new post, finishing reading that wonderful post, commenting and then realizing, oh I bet she's replied to yesterdays post is like finding a present in a present, like dessert after a perfect dinner. Of course I like seeing my name and having you respond to me personally. But I love reading everyone else's responses and then your responses to them. It's part of how rich this blog is, the community, the fun, the wisdom, etc...
I can imagine it being overwhelming for you though. I bet there's a way to keep it up but not have to comment on everyone's comments all the time. Not exactly sure how this would work though. Hmmm.
Maybe start with a time thing or after a certain number of posts (10?) you comment and then although we know you will read our comments we won't expect you to write back to us on that post if we are after #10? For instance I might even wait to be after #10 on a day when I didn't have much to say or feel like I need a response back, just so I could let you know I was there and read you and appreciate you. On another day when I'm feeling like more dialoge, I might try to jump in very early so I get my Ms Moon attention.
I realize I'm starting to sound crazy. So I better stop.
If you don't comment on this comment my feelings will be hurt and I will cry.
    Wah.
    ;-)

  2. Yes!

It's one reason I'm worryign about my own comment notification. I was reading oldposts of my own last night, I know, the height of narcism... but wondered if I'd actually seen some of the later comments or not. I HATE to think of people commenting and me not knowing.

  3. Just checking to see if you responded yet.
    How bout now?
That's another OCD, fun thing to do when I'm avoiding my work.
    So many layers here.
Sometimes I just scroll down through the posts I've already read and click on the comment section.
I'd rather stay here and read the comments than go off into the internet and read other blogs I haven't gotten to yet. I don't know why. It's just so familiar and cozy here. It's like you always have the porch light on, and the smell of cookies baking!

  4. Bethany- Okay. I have read your comment and I am commenting on it. And I love the idea of a conversation being had. You know? But I KNOW how addicted we get to each other's blogs and there is just so much time in the day. So I am wondering- do people like this or not?
You do. And thank-you. And the porch light may not be on, but right now Bad Santa is.

Jo- I KNOW! And I want people to know how much I appreciate their comments.

  5. Yes, I either check back or I just have the responses emailed to me by checking a box when I do comment. A lot of times I have a hard time pulling up comments on your blog in particular, (yes, that's still happening and no, I don't know why exactly.)

  6. Ha Ha! I love this post. Of course I read the comments and the comments on the comments, and lately I skip all the comments if I'm late and try to catch my comment before it gets scrambled in my head, and then read the other comments when I am done with mine! There have been times when your blog was so perceptive or thought provoking, and your comments more so and your responses even more so, that I felt there was nothing left I could possible say, even though you spawned so many thoughts in my little brain. I love the interactive nature of your blog, it's what makes it so unique and so alive.
I wonder how you keep up, I can get so far behind just reading if I've been busy.
And I'm so dense and literal sometimes, I had to read the title twice before I got it and had such a nice laugh!
    Thanks for asking!

  7. All of the above... but only when I have time.

  8. i go back and check if i comment or if the discourse is enlightening.

i dont always go back and address comments with comments at my blog though, i will more likely post about it.

  9. yepper. I called you, but no answer. I think you were on the phone.

  10. I read comments if I have time and for sure if the topic is especially appealing. I definately check back and like the dialogue you create with everyone.

  11. great question. i get excited when you do comment on my comments. i enjoy dialoguing, but i admit, i do forget to come and read your responses, more often than not. when i think about the reasons for this, i think it really comes down to time. and lack thereof. sorry. but keep commenting! i appreciate it so much!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I usually try to check back to read your response and like to read the comments of others when I have time.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Absolutely! I used to get notified that there were comments on the comments I commented on (isn't this fun). But for some reason that stopped. NOW, I have to remember what I commented on and go back on my own. So that gives me a mental workout. But I always try to remember definitely to come back here to see what you've said. Becuz you always comment back. And that is fun.

Do you know what I heard recently? Someone said that "young people" call those who regularly or semi-regularly read a blog but don't comment "stalkers." Which is pretty rich.

In the "learn new detritus everyday" department.

  14. Well, you're right. Sorry, I got a little over excited, I certainly can't speak for anyone but myself. Like I said, I just find your blog and the way you respond so unique, and it seems that people do really enjoy that part of it too. You're right about only so much time in the day and getting a bit obsessed too. Still, I'm glad Bad Santas in glowing.

  15. As a newcomer, I am starting to really enjoy your style. I always read your posts and comment if I feel like I have something to add to the conversation. If I don't think I can think of anything intelligent to say, I don't. If I comment, I do come back and check. And I do read the comments.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yes. And I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it. I LOVE that you respond to comments -- I so rarely do on my own blog and always think I'm going to start. I don't always read all the comments on a blog but do every now and then...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Absolutely. It is a two way conversation. It is difficult to do it on my blog but I go into the writer's blog and answer there, alas the rest of the world may think I am crazy but the owner of the blog often knows what I am talking about.

I am distressed about the fact that lately some blogs -mine included- are taking forever to publish a comment and some times they just simply do not ever make it into the real world, I hope this one does.

I left a long one this morning concerning a certain rooster abuser and his one way ticket to somewhere other than the coop. Apparently Blogger thought I was endorsing violence because I don't see it here at all. But yes, I read your posts and I read most of the comments if I have the time.

Long answer to a very short question.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't always read the comments before mine, but I do click the 'get follow-up comments by email' so I read the ones after mine, including your responses.

    ReplyDelete
  19. ha..yes i do..i often coment on your response-coments too...or come back for a ps-coment....

as well as i come back to check for coments of other readers of your block who i like..like for e example jo, mwa, petit fleur and glimmer...plus i come to see if there is some more jessie-ness on here....ducks*

but often my coments sucks..because i read one of your posts..and while i get through it i think..oh i hav eto coment on that..and this..and oh that reminds me of a funny story which i wanna share and and and...and in the end i forget half of what i wanted to coment because i m so enchanted by your post....

    ReplyDelete
  20. Of course! But sometimes it will be a week later. I'll be commenting for a week, and then I'll "catch up" on the replies. But sometimes it's half an hour later only. Depends on the topic.

Do you come back to read my replies? I'm always wondering about your comments. I think I read too much into it. I sometimes wish you would just leave a disagreeing comment or something, because I start reading awful things into the silence. That's what happens if someone comments 99% of the time, I suppose. I have cunningly deduced from your strategic silences that you don't appreciate ironing. ;-)

Sometimes comments are a cause of severe mindfuck. In my case, at least.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh, shit - just reread that. Please don't take it the wrong way. The mindfuck is all my own, I assure you. Nothing to do with what you do. You're lovely.

  22. I read all your commments Mrs Moon but not on here. I'm far too lazy. I read them as e-mail alerts in my desktop e-mail program

    ReplyDelete
  23. To add to my previous comment, actually they should be labelled as replies (the ones when Mrs Moon responds to comments) and I got into the habit of replying to my commentors when I used to be on Live Journal where the bloggers reply IS referred to as a reply.
I try to always respond to any comments made on my blog as well, just think its the right thing to do...

    ReplyDelete
  24. I ALWAYS come back to check your response. It makes me happy.

I want to figure out a user friendly way to comment on comments that doesn't involve more time sitting at the computer. Maybe something via email that will go to my crackberry.

It's lovely that you comment on all the comments.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I read your comemnts on my blog and try to follow up, but the blogging protocol can become a career and even retired I find I can't keep up with it all. I read you fairly regularly as much as I have reduced my reading to a few old favorites and try to leave comments. I don't see how you possibly keep up responding to every comment. It's amazing. It's noon time before I am finished my email chores alone. Course I got hooked on Facebook and all my former kids and parents as well.
but anyway...as Joy said about you...your stuff is closer to my bones than most of the stuff I read.
    Love ya
    Charlie

  26. try to always check back because I LOVE what you say in response. always makes me smile! thanks :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yes! Yes! Yes! Your responses are almost as important as your blog - but you've spoiled us, I imagine, because your comments are so thoughtful (as in we can tell you think about your responses).

    ReplyDelete
  28. I do not always check back. I do if I'm asking you a question or think you will have a particularly pithy response. but otherwise, not so much. (and I think I'm playing devil's advocate here because most above me are saying "always.")

    ReplyDelete
  29. I always read the comments, & sometimes I check back but usually I don't. When I read your comments on the comments I think, "Oh, wow! She doesn't need to go to all that work! We know she reads our comments!" So I'm glad you took a vacation on commenting on comments today so I don't feel so guilty for commenting and making that extra work for you! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yes, absolutely I read comments and ALWAYS when I comment, I return to see your comment on my comment :)

  31. ok. that(this) is hilarious. of course, echoing Bethany, we do! and echoing the "addiction" thing, this morning I was thinking of a book I was reading, and wanting to sit down and read some more, and I said, "Wait! That's Ms. Moon's Blog!" so I made a 2nd little pot of coffee and sat down here....

really, the important thing to me is that you continue to thrive with your blog writing. maybe that is the pull for me. of course, I enjoy seeing proof(!!!) that you read my comment ;-)

so, I have chickens to feed.... can't wait to smell Owen! through your words.

  32. Most of the time, yes. In fact, I think you are the only one I read where I DO go back in and check for replies.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes, I almost always do check to see what you wrote back about my comment. Not 100% of the time, just because my little ones keep me off the computer most of the day, but I always plan to, and usually do. I love it!

I read the other comments too.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I don't think I've ever read any of your comments. You asked for the truth.

(Now what does Mr. Danielle mean by more Jessie-ness? Haha)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I skim the comments sometimes, but I do come back and read yours.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I do....sometimes, especially if I've said something that I think would get a response...It seems I don't always get a reply, but that's okay........

    ReplyDelete
  37. I agree with Bethany that it is such a cozy place when I come by your place that I keep coming back and love to read your comments. Sometimes I am late to visit so I comment days after everyone else....

    ReplyDelete
  38. Of course I come back and read the comments you leave for my comments. How else would I know that Santa is holding a bell - an upside down bell, OK, now that you pointed it out, I can see it, but it's not even a sleigh bell, for goodness sake - and not an ice scraper? I think an ice scraper would be more practical, as long as the reindeer are wearing bells.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I don't every single time, but most of the time, yes. I always like to read what others have to say, and I love it when you say something back, too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I read blogs and comments. I have them emailed if this is an option. But I don't mind what anyone does. You have to do whatever works, not feel pressured . I don't read the little dialogue comments on comments , (unless of course they involve me )but always the initial ones.
But if blogger has lots of comments, it would be too time consuming to reply personally to all of them. Plus go read their blogs, etc.
    It's complicated, but amazing.
    As are you.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Funny, I thought he was holding an ice scraper as well!
