I Am Not Cranky. I Am Pissy

Here we have a Gulf Fritillary on a marigold. Now, because I have the weird need to point out my deficiencies whenever possible, I will tell you that I was pretty far away when I took that picture, thus the vast imperfection of it, but I was holding a basket with one hand, the phone in the other, and did not want to move because I was afraid the butterfly would get scared off.
So. That is what you get.

I've been cranky again today but mostly in my mind. I think I'd rather call how I'm feeling as pissy. Yes. I am pissy. But again, I've been as nice as can be to my husband and also to a young man who's been doing some work for Glen on Tom's house and property. He came over this afternoon for a few minutes and he was just the sweetest guy. Well, the guy isn't that young. He has children and everything. He and his wife are friends with Jessie and Vergil, I do believe.
Whatever. The point is- my pissiness mostly extends to myself. I am simply in a rather angry mood and feel as if I am a worthless old woman who is taking up space that would be far better used by, let's say, a young person with children.
Now please, please do not start telling me that's not true and listing ways that I am not worthless and so on and so forth. I know all of that. It's just that sometimes this is the way I feel and there's no getting around it.
It will pass.
And I have to tell you about a truly almost-magical experience I had today. I was working outside on one of the beds beside the back porch steps, trying to clear out border grass and crocosmia and so forth. We all know this story by now. It was shady there and I thought it would not be so horribly hot but it was. Still, I managed to work for almost an hour before my glasses were so covered in sweat that I couldn't see.
And that translated to this much cleared space.

Why, after all this time, do I think that pulling up these vile plant-enemies of mine will be such a simple task?
Because obviously, I am a slow learner.
But I did that much and I trimmed a bit of the wisteria growing on the arbor right beside that bed and then, when I had done all I felt I could do, I went to go into the house via the back porch steps when I looked down right in front of the door we go in and out of on the top step to see this.

My brain didn't even register it at first. And then...it did.
What in the world was this?
I bent over and picked it up. It may be glass but I really don't think so. I believe it may be uncut purple quartz which we also call amethyst. I can recognize no shape or form of glass it could have been a part of and honestly, it doesn't matter.
I can think of no other reason for it to be right there where I was sure to find it than that a crow left it for me.
It did not fall from the sky. It did not fall from the pecan tree. It did not fall from the roof. Glen did not put it there. Maurice most certainly did not bring it to me. I have never seen it in my life.
And you know- I feel a certain sort of wonder at this. How could I not?
I will readily admit that I began feeding the crows because of this very thing. That people who feed crows are often given gifts, often of shiny things, the crows seem to leave for them as...what? Tokens of appreciation? Equal trade representations? Encouragement to keep on feeding them?
Whatever it is, it feels like an acknowledgement. Just as I have come to recognize these five very, very large crows who come to eat at the stumps where I lay out their mealworms and peanuts, they seem to recognize that I, the woman they see placing those things on the stumps and whom they can see opening that porch door and going down those steps with their food in my hands, am responsible for these goodies. Whatever their motive is in leaving treasures doesn't matter to me. I can't even begin to understand what goes on in the mind of a crow. What I do understand is that they have come to know me and my habits and that is pretty darn swell.
I am quite overwhelmed, to tell you the truth.

I've been cooking a pot of black, pinto, and red beans with smoked turkey leg pieces most of the day. The reason for the mixture is that I didn't have enough of one kind of bean to fill the pot. They look lovely and they taste very, very good. I'm also cooking a pot of collard greens but obviously not collard greens that I've grown. I feel sort of like a person who sticks artificial flowers in vases for a photo shoot. This is cheating.
But I'm craving them, plus, I want to taste some of my pepper vinegars. The greens have been in my refrigerator for days and they certainly weren't exactly young and tender when they got cut up and put in the bag in which I bought them.
Oh well. Needs must. And I am doing the southern MeeMaw thing and cooking the ever-loving hell out of them.

Perhaps I'll make some rice to go with or perhaps I'll just make some cornbread.

I've worked on my fish some more. Why is this so satisfying?

Tomorrow is pottery and so I'll wrap her back up and pack the glazes and see what I get accomplished in class.
I am sort of thinking that my next project might be a bowl in which I can put our collection of crow treasures in. I don't know. Maybe. Maybe not. Would it be shaped and glazed to resemble a crow or would it be a regular bowl with a crow image inside it? Or a leaf bowl with a crow inside it? A magnolia leaf bowl, perhaps.
I shall ponder. It will come to me.

No change in Glen's friend's condition.
Maurice continues to spend a great deal of time on his lap.
As he said, "She knows."

Love...Ms. Moon

  2. Your mention of pepper vinegar reminds me that I put a jar of hot peppers with vinegar in the fridge a couple of weeks ago, inspired by one of your earlier posts. The peppers didn't smell hot, and I stupidly didn't wear gloves to wash and chop them, and my hands REALLY burned afterwards, so the vinegar might be hot! A science experiment! Dottie the fish gets better all the time, and the crow gift is a wonder. Do you suppose they have a stash of treasure somewhere and selected this one for you, or... Anyway it's very exciting.

    1. I never chop my peppers before I put them in the vinegar. I think it increases their life of pepperness if you leave them whole. But yeah- chopping peppers is dangerous.
I was wondering the same thing about a possible crow stash. Wouldn't that be funny?

  3. A crow bowl! What a great idea! Is there such a thing as a black iridescent glaze? A simple bowl, shiny and black.

This is an awful time for everyone who loves your friend. The whole not knowing what comes next thing is awful.

    1. I just have to figure out what sort of bowl I want to make. There are indeed black glazes!
I am afraid that mostly we do know what comes next with Glen's friend.

  4. I’m loving the crow stories! I’ve left food for crows but didn’t keep to it. I don’t want to leave for weeks at a time and stop feeding them. My husband is not a fan of the whole process. I do still say ‘hello’ to them. One day they shall return the greeting.

    1. These crows are definitely interesting. When we last left to go out of town, Mark, my faithful and wonderful house/cat sitter also fed the crows.
It's funny. I don't really feel any affection from these birds. Mostly what I feel is awe.

  5. The crows brought you an amethyst! You are so lucky. Perhaps working on the fish is satisfying because the end is in sight and then the firing? How do you see vast imperfections when all we see is a beautiful butterly photo? I would love to feed the crows around here, there aren't many, but don't want to encourage even more of the already several dozen of the morning doves the upstairs neighbour feeds.

    1. No, that's not the sort of satisfying I'm feeling now. It's more like just the choosing of colors and painting them on is very meditative in a way.
It's funny. I haven't seen any other birds eating the meal worms and I had though that perhaps the squirrels would go for the peanuts but if so, I've not seen it yet. The crows are pretty efficient at getting everything eaten up. They take the peanuts away to eat and I wonder if they have like an entire cache of them somewhere to munch on later.

  6. Pissy is as OK as cranky...just go with it! beautiful butterfly pic... your fish *Francis*? is going to be another beauty...and yes..the gift from the Crow's is now telling me not only *look up*.....but *look down*. Aren't they clever and appreciative! That is a gorgeous gift...and perhaps a shift from marine......to avian...might be in pottery order?

    1. I swear- these crows are definitely damn smart. Like Maurice with her fresh meat gifts for me, they leave their gifts where they know I'll see them.
      Hmmm...
I don't think I'd be much good at birds.

  7. Wow. That quartz thing blows my mind. It must mean something even if you have to make it mean something. Or just let it be a gift from the universe.

    1. Isn't that crazy? I'd heard these stories but I honestly had pretty big doubts about crow gifts. And honestly, I think it's pretty darn meaningful just being a gift from a bird.

  8. You've got to admit the crow's gifts are nicer than Maurice's dead mice!!!

    1. Well, not in Maurice's opinion! You can't eat purple quartz!

  9. Crows are fascinating creatures and I’m sure they find you fascinating too. Maybe they’ll start stealing jewelry for you! I’m pissy, too, but primarily in the direction of the spouse who can be plenty pissy himself. I love your fish platter!

    1. These birds surely do interest me. I never figured I'd have any sort of relationship with a wild bird but here we are.
      SG pissy? Surely you jest.

  10. I firmly believe that amethyst shard is a gift from your crow friends! I would be inclined to create a little Crow altar somewhere in your house to honour and display it.

    1. I used to do altar type things. I don't know why but I lost my motivation to do so. I would love to display their gifts, though. But who knows? They may be the last thing they'll ever bring me and even if they do bring me more things, I can't even imagine how they'd be cooler than that chunk of amethyst.

  11. Amethyst quartz is supposed to reduce stress. I like Debra's idea of an altar for it. I think the crows have replaced your chickens and that's a lovely thing.
As for feeling pissy, oh well, it happens and it will pass.
    Sending hugs sweetie.

    1. Hmmmm. Perhaps I should carry that chunk of amethyst around in my pocket to help with stress. I doubt it would help.
The crows are wonderful but they have not replaced the chickens who, in their partial domestication, were far more apt to respond to my presence and they weren't afraid of me so they'd cluck and scratch right in front of me and I could talk with them when they were busy with their work. Or they could talk to me when I was busy with my work!
      Yeah. Pissy passes.
      Sending back hugs to you.

  12. I see that crow gift cleaned up, wrapped in gold wire, and hung from a chain as a lovely necklace. A jeweler might have to help, but you are a very crafty person and perhaps could create something lovely on your own.

    1. Thanks for the idea but I'm afraid I'd never wear the necklace if I did manage to get one together. I think I'd just rather keep it where I can see it and hold it when I want to.

  15. What a magical story about the crows and that amethyst gift, I got goosebumps reading it! That pot of beans with smoked turkey sounds delicious, and I'm curious how your fish will turn out in pottery class. Glad you could still find some small wonders to enjoy today.

    1. Oh, the beans were SO good. Well, still are. There are leftovers, of course. I love how some beans make a sort of gravy when they cook down some when they're done. These surely did.

  16. Well, how cool is that! That's a very nice gift. The only outside work I've done today is water pots and plants in the back and front. I have a picture of a fritillary that I almost published on my last post. It will go up on the next one.

    1. Fritillaries seem to be a little less apt to fly away at the smallest breeze. Butterflies have to work so hard to get what they need, don't they?
Your last post describing all the things you did including picking up all that garbage when you still didn't feel well made me feel like a small and pitiful child.

  17. Well pissy is fine. I'm just now using the F-bomb with Ai, not respecting my comments and messing with them. Well, I for one think your photo of the Gulf fritillary is great. And your fish bowl is looking fantastic. The crows sure have left you a wonderful gift. I've no doubt that is from them.

    1. I really can't think of who or what else would have left that pretty quartz.
So what does AI think about the word "fuck"? Glen used it once with Siri and she asked him to please ask nicely. I am not making this up.

  18. I like how you described pissy because I get in "those kind of moods" more often than I'd like, and now I have a word for it. That amethyst is beautiful!

    1. I think pissy is an excellent word and is gender-neutral, too.
I, too, am often pissy. I think we get that way out of self-protection sometimes.

  19. Pissy over here usually involves alcohol. Cranky does work, but I can see how you want something both more specific and more general at the same time. Snippy doesn't really cut it, does it? I thought that "gravel in your craw" might work, but I have done the "research" and that doesn't work either.

    1. We do say that someone is pissed to indicate they are either very mad or very drunk. "Pissy", though, means (to me at least), someone who is in a very negative state of mind and is NOT GOING TO SUFFER ANY FOOLS GLADLY!

  20. Crows are so smart- they know you, they watch you, they catch the vibe, you are looked after. Best gift ever!
When someone says "have a nice day" I tell them I have other plans, - when a server says "enjoy" i ask that they please not tell me what to do...
Is that pissy or just real.

    Replies
    1. Oh, Linda Sue- you made me laugh! "I have other plans." Now. Tell me what you'd say to someone who told you to have a BLESSED day because that shit happens all the time around here. It's code for "I'm a Christian and love Jesus."
Yep. Servers sure do use a lot of terms that annoy me. "Enjoy." "Everything good here?" or the worst - "Are you still working on that?" Where and when did that shit start?

  21. I get pissy sometimes too. There's nothing to do but ride it out, as you said.

That's AMAZING about the purple crystal! I have never heard of crows bringing people who feed them treasures, and when you started talking about the possibility I was skeptical. Now I am totally impressed!

    1. Read about it, Steve! For some reason, crows seem to feel compelled to bring humans shiny gifts. But this one is about the best I've ever heard of. I've also heard of them stealing things like a ring left beside an outdoor sink by accident.

  22. That amethyst crystal is amazing. The crows are saying thank you with a shiny gift. I am wondering what they will bring to you next.
Designing a crow bowl or platter sounds really cool. That's a project worth considering.
Your fish is looking great. I love the pastel colors you have chosen.
For someone that says they have no skill, your butterfly photo is outstanding.
