It took me two and a half hours to do the dark green, light blue, and pink scales near Dotty Frances' tail and to start lining the parts of the fins. And add a little bit to her face.
Two and one-half hours.
And I wasn't stopping for coffee breaks, either. Oh well. I am going to work on it here at home some more because if I don't, that poor thing won't be fired by the end of this session.
Pottery seemed rather light-hearted today while at the same time, everyone was busy. Most of us were doing something with glaze.
Glazing, I guess we would call it. Lizzie was painting her little doggies and cats and snakes. Now THAT is fussy work. I should have gotten a picture. Her hand is far steadier than mine.
Jessie was working on glazing and painting a planter pot she's made for August's birthday which is coming up quick, quick. He has a fern he's been growing on his window sill but it needs a bigger pot and so his talented mama has made him one. She painted a dragon on it which is a copy of a dragon in a series of books that August loves. I believe the dragon's name is "Skywing." She was overwhelmed when she first sat down with her glazes and brushes and the picture she wanted to follow.
"I can't do this," she said. This is not something I usually hear Jessie say.
Lizzie and I told her that of course she could and so she began and by the end of class, here's what she and the little pot looked like.
Here's a closer look.
She painted August's name inside and also Happy Birthday!
I think that boy is going to be thrilled.
We were all fairly industrious and I saw a lot of good work being done.
Gentleman Caller™came in just before class was over. I made Lizzie and him pose for a picture.
Now is that an adorable couple or what? Lizzie won't be in class next week as she is taking one of her daughters to Belize to celebrate milestone birthdays for both of them. I have to say that Lizzie is a far better mother in many ways than I am. Grandmother too, to tell you the truth.
Oh well. We get the mother we get. Some kids get a Lizzie, some get a Mary.
After class, we met Lily for lunch at the former Japanica! now Kyoto. Jessie and Lily got sushi and I got a Bento box with tofu. Of course. And it was good.
Dammit, right after we got there, Lily said something that made me laugh so hard and I swore to myself that I'd remember it but of course I do not. I'm pathetic. Anyway, I remembered to take their picture.
Am I a lucky mama or what?
I have recently learned a new term which I adore. I got it from Elizabeth Aquino's Substack. At least I think I did. The term is "search it up," which takes the place of "look it up" or "google it" because those are now insufficient in a world where there are many, many online sources in which to gather information about whatever you may be wondering about.
But I simply the love the sound of it and how it so accurately describes what we do now when we are looking for answers to all of our questions.
Search it up!
And today I learned a new one. It's the slang word "delulu." Jessie told me this one. Miriam Webster tells us what it means and its derivation HERE.
It's pretty self-explanatory as of course it comes from the word "delusional" but gosh. How can you not love delulu?
Are you delulu? Wake up!
Now will I start using these?
I shouldn't. When older people use popular slang, I am always reminded of the pastors of churches where guitars were used instead of organs who said things like, "Our god is a GROOVY god. He is a FAR-OUT god."
Know what I mean?
Just...no.
But I hate being cheated out of the opportunity to call someone (including myself) delulu or to tell someone to search it up.
I know I'm old and I would never try to make myself seem cool here in my old age but gee-whiz, Beaver!
You know what I mean? You get me, man?
Well, we shall see what happens here.
Meanwhile, I'm going to go cook some grouper and some sort of vegetable matter. We could have leftover collard greens but despite those hours of simmering, they were tough as old shoelaces. What a disappointment that was.
However, the beans with smoked turkey were fantastic. So was the cornbread.
I do have some store-bought okra but I'm thinking I'd like to make a gumbo with that.
Oh gosh. So many culinary problems.
Better get to it.
Love...Ms. Moon

The fish and the dragon are magical. (So are the daughters.)
ReplyDeleteHow can you say Lizzie is a far better mother? I’m sure she’s a great mother. But you’re different mothers. Comparison is unnecessary. I would have given anything to have a mother like you. Just look at your kids and your grandkids!!! Are you delulu?!?
Oh, how I love that you used "delulu"! Correctly, too.
DeleteLizzie's children are also remarkable and her grandchildren are almost unbearably cute. And she takes them on trips!
Fishy is looking good, I'm excited to see her once she is fired. I don't think I would ever say "search it up" or "delulu".
ReplyDeleteI probably will use those words but I'll try to use them with an ironic twist to them so people will know I'm not trying to be hip.
DeleteJessie is so talented, the dragon is fantastic, I’m sure August will love it.
ReplyDeleteShe can do amazing things, that girl. Pottery definitely brings out the artist in her.
DeleteI've heard "Google it up," which I love. It sounds very Southern to me. And I have heard "delulu," though I don't use it much -- not because there aren't enough delulu people in the world!
ReplyDeleteJessie's dragon bowl is fantastic! August will treasure it all his life, I bet. It's funny that you then mentioned comparing mothers, because I thought as I saw that bowl, "There's NO WAY my mother would have made me anything like that!"
"Google it up." Huh. That works too. For some reason "Search it up," pleases me more though.
Delete"Delulu" is just so perfect. I think it's an excellent word.
My mother used to make me dresses as I used to make my kids clothing. Does that count? How about name blankets?
"Search It Up" sounds like the title of a laid back reggae song... "Search it up little darling!" but I think it is indeed an improvement on "look it up" or "google it" or even "research it". As for Lizzie being "a far better mother" - I cannot believe that's true. After following your blog for years now, I know how much you love your children and your grandchildren and how much they love you back. I am looking forward to seeing the finished fish, shiny as though emerging straight from the ocean where fish of that incredible species swim.
ReplyDeleteWell, Lizzie is a more generous mother and that's the truth. It just is.
DeleteYou have made me think of "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou" which, if you haven't seen it, has a scene of an underwater adventure where my fish might indeed have been swimming. Have you ever seen the movie? It is one of my favorite but I know it's not for everyone. It's a Wes Anderson movie with Bill Murray and Angelica Houston. Among others.
I haven't followed your blog for that long, but I can surely say that you seem like a terrific mother. And I mean that with all sincerity. Jessie's bowl is beautiful and I am sure it will be treasured. And delulu has become my new favorite word. And when I typed it, the red line didn't appear. It's a word! I remember years ago when I was teaching fifth grade to students with special needs. I had given them an assignment where they had to use the dictionary. One of the students screamed out to the class after a few minutes..."Oh my God... Pizza is a word!"
ReplyDeleteLet's all start using delulu!
DeleteI think August will very much appreciate his mama's gift to him.
Pizza IS a word and isn't that cool?
Jessie's dragon pot is fab! And oh my yes, the Gentleman Caller is indeed a dapper dan, isn't he! (to use another old, outdated slang term). I love slang, it's so creative. Sounds like delulu is the new cray-cray.
ReplyDeleteOh, I remember Dapper Dan. And yes, GC is one indeed.
DeleteIt does seem as if delulu is the new cray-cray although I think we could use both.
A dragon would be so challenging to paint - one doesn't have very many from life dragon sightings to help develop the picture, maybe? And as I recall glaze is not at all an easy medium to apply - clumpy and runny at the same time. And then you have to wait and wait to see it fired, and can't readily go back and change something that didn't work.
ReplyDeleteCeci
You are so right! It's not like drawing a goldfish, is it?
DeleteThe kind of glaze I use is fairly easy to apply. It's not clumpy and it's not runny. I have to do at least three coats though, to make it really come through. And that can lead to problems.
Laughing out loud here...I had just read about the Skywing dragon, whom I'd not yet heard of...so guess what I did? I stopped and did a Duck Duck search...to learn there are fans of those dragons! THEN I learned the act I'd just accomplished has a new term! I've already "searched it up" without knowing the proper term! That's me, just do it, then learn what it's called!!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Do it and then name it. It would be funny to say "Duck Duck it up."
DeleteI think Jessie did an excellent job with the dragon. I have a friend who prints a copy of what she wants and then draws over it onto her pottery so it leaves a pattern for her and then she can paint it. Works quite well.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing that August will love it. Your fish is looking beautiful too. Can't wait to see it fired.
As for Lizzie being a better mother and grandmother, I doubt it. You rock both woman.
Yes, the print thing would definitely work. Like a transfer. I think we sort of enjoy the challenge of making our own though.
DeleteLizzie is a wonderful mother and grandmother. We are different, for sure, but she definitely is.
Don't ever put yourself down as a mother or grandmother because you are terrific! I use "Duck, duck, go" for my searches.
ReplyDeleteYour fish is looking great, Mary, and August will love that pot that Jessie made for him.
As I said to Barbara Rogers above, It would be funny to say, "Duck, Duck it up!"
DeleteI hope the fish comes out all right. I need to get it done and in the kiln!
Your fish is very colorful. Jessie did an excellent job on the dragon. August will be thrilled. And I'm with Mitchell, are you delulu? Everytime I hear new slang I think of Old Man Simpson...I used to be with it but then with it changed and now it's weird and scary.
ReplyDeleteThe fish is very colorful. This I can safely say. And those colors are going to be far more intense after firing. Sort of magical, I think.
DeleteYes. I think we all feel a little like Old Man Simpson.
I find each mother has her own style of mothering. The variety is huge and the differences can be drastic. What works for one, does not work for all and that is perfectly okay.
ReplyDeleteI will look forward to seeing the dragon bowl and your fish platter when they are finished. Both are looking good.
Susan
You are so right about different mothering styles. As many as their are mothers, really. And what works for one child doesn't work for another! So there's that too.
DeleteI'm looking forward to finishing this fish and seeing it too. And definitely the dragon planter.
there is a town near to where I grew up called Dululu - come into its own!!
ReplyDeleteGet outta here! That's crazy! I love it.
DeleteOh gosh NO! You win all the best mother prizes there are! You KNOW my arm has been twisted into going to Belize, but that's not till October. Next week I'm doing grandchildren in British Columbia and I CAN NOT WAIT. I'll miss the pottery mayhem next week...thanks for taking a photo of us. I think gentleman caller is adORable
ReplyDeleteWhy did I think that Belize was what was coming up? Oh well.
ReplyDeleteMy kids know it's useless to try and twist my arm. I did take Hank and May to see B.B. King once. That counts for something, doesn't it? And I took Lily and Jessie to St. George Island for a few summers where we stayed in a two-room cement block apartment. It was sort of heavenly, though.
You are so right about GC. He could hardly be more adorable.
I hope you get ten million hugs this next week.
