This Is How We Do It

Well, here are the Weatherford/Hartmann kids which of course means the Moon grand-kids with their Easter booty and being part of this family, things were not exactly what we might call traditional.
What is Owen wearing?

And what is Gibson wearing?

Well, you see- Owen is Good Easter and Gibson is Bad Easter and as the younger kids raced about finding their eggs, Gibson would chase them and if he touched one, they had to freeze. Like Freeze Tag only for Easter and in costumes.
Makes sense, right?
And the frozen person could not move until Good Easter Owen came and touched them and they could resume their racing about in search of eggs.

I am not sure where this idea came from, nor do I know where the costumes came from but they're pretty hysterical. It did add interest to what can become a rather boring tradition over the years. The little kids loved it. Many eggs were found, most of them plastic with candy or money in them but there were some really truly dyed eggs too.

Those were made into deviled eggs and since Lauren brought some she'd made, there were plenty for all.

Lauren has recently just become the deli manager at the same Publix where Lily works. She's been a deli manager for a long time but they move her around when things need shaking up and tightened up. This is a cool move for her because that Publix is very close to their house whereas the one she was working at was way over in Student Land by FSU.
Cool, Lauren!

When May and Jessie got here, I gave them both lovely aprons to wear with their Easter finery. Here's May in hers, making her salad.

I did not get a full-on picture of Jessie in her fancy apron but here she makes an appearance in a picture I took of Lily and her eldest son.

Every time I see Owen I cry. How is this possible?

We surely did miss Rachel and Hank. Rachel is doing quite well. Her incision is healing up nicely and the pain for which she got the surgery in the first place is better than before surgery and is supposed to improve as time goes on. Which is wonderful but I know she's bored out of her skull. Well, Hank told me that. "She's bored out of her skull," he said.

Jessie and Vergil dropped off some of the dinner for them on their way home and here is what the meal looked like.

Do you like the serving dishes?

It was a beautiful meal but not really overwhelming. By the time we'd eaten and people got their leftovers to take home, there wasn't much left. And I am proud that so much of it was homegrown. The lettuces in the salad, the peas, the collard and mustard greens. The deviled eggs were from a neighbor of Jessie's who has chickens. The bread and the biscuits were made with love as was everything else, really.
But you may ask- what biscuits?

Y'all, I made a rather huge batch of biscuits, my biggest skillet full, and those things disappeared in a red hot second.
Excuse me while I say, "They were fucking amazing."

Here we are at table.

All except for these three who agreed to eat on a quilt picnic style.

"Maggie," I said, "Do you really want to be remembered forever for having a biscuit in your mouth at Easter?"
"Yes," she said. "I do."

The kids had all been playing whiffle ball in the backyard before we got the meal on the table and afterwards too. They are going to sleep good tonight.
Guess who else is going to sleep good tonight?

Xena, aka Large Marge. It looks like her eyes are open there but they aren't. She was already crashed out. She was a pretty good girl, considering she's still very much a puppy. She didn't jump on people, she sort of responds to commands, and she is absolutely filled with the joy of life. She was in ecstasy, playing ball with the kids, racing around the back yard.

Before everyone left, we had a Gibson birthday cake with candles ceremony, "Happy Birthday" being sung in our usual, uh, enthusiastic way.

Our beautiful Gibson. Our sweet, sweet boy.
He, too, towers over me now.

Before everyone left, I told Lauren that I had something I needed to tell her.
"You're mad because I didn't make the sweet potato casserole?"
"No. That was just a mild disappointment. What I wanted to tell you was," and here I lowered my voice, "My favorite part of the entire meal was your ambrosia salad."
I was not lying.
I will go on about our healthy garden foods and I mean every word I say about them but I'd be a damn liar if I did not admit that Lauren's "salad" with baby marshmallows, pecans, coconut, maraschino cherries, pineapple and probably Cool Whip was the food on my plate that I saved until last because I wanted to keep that sweetness with me as long as I could.

So it was a great day and I got to see all the grandchildren and get a little love from each and give back as much as they let me. I look around me and I see all these smiling beautiful faces and I hear our laughter as we discuss the profound and profane, the cosmic and the comic, recent events and long-ago memories. Oh, the memories.
I feel like okay, maybe I didn't screw it all up.
And when Owen hugs me, which he often does, he always says, "I love you Mer," and I think, "Yeah. I got a few things right."

But I will say, as I always must- they were born this way
And how incredibly fortunate I am.

Okay. So. Ms. Moon- what was your Easter outfit? Did you gussy up and be all fancy?
Well of course.
I wore my great-grandmother's pearls. What could be fancier than that?

God I have a lot of shit hanging around my house.

I wonder if it's time for a ham sandwich yet? I will ponder that.

Love...Ms. Moon

    1. I totally agree about the pearls. The ones I'm wearing in the picture, from my paternal great-grandmother Mary Gibson, are very small and I think are natural pearls. I have another string which may have been my maternal grandmothers but I swear- I really don't know. I also don't know if they're "good" pearls or not. That is a much smaller string.
I couldn't believe how much Gibson and Owen got into the whole Good and Bad Easter thing.

  2. OMG those inflatable chicken and dragon costumes are TOO FUNNY! What a clever way to add extra zing and challenge to an easter egg hunt! Looks like the whole fam damily had a great time at that fab dinner. And ambrosia salad -- swoon! I had an auntie when I was a kid who would sometimes make ambrosia salad for a potluck holiday dinner and she would even leave the coconut out of it just for me because I didn't like coconut. Gawd, I loved that ambrosia salad. No wonder I'm a diabetic today.

    1. I had NO idea what was going on when Owen and Gibson donned the costumes. What did that have to do with Easter? They all loved it though.
You know what? Yesterday I absolutely ignored both chocolate cake and a delicious cheesecake thing but when Lauren asked if I wanted to keep some of the leftover ambrosia I did!

  3. Ms. Moon, I think I love you, too! I don't even know how I got here, I've been so captivated by your FABulous family, all that fun and love and sweet chillun, the grand feast, the quite familiar Family Silver serving pieces, and that grand giggle at the awesome dragon and surly rooster game had me laughing to pee my pants!!
That Miss Maggie, now---our family has several Maggies, and Maggies are born knowing Who They Are, and that is POWER knowledge.

These are the blogs I love---like I'd love to post, for our SEVEN are scattered into six states, three of them military, and haven't been EVERY single one together since 2020. I've joined your fans, if I can find whatever doohickey your site requires poking. We had a lovely quiet Easter weekend, with lots of communication and several visitors. Looking forward to hearing and seeing more of your fabulous, familiar adventures! racheld @ LAWN TEA blog

I know how very lucky I am to have my dear ones right nearby. It is a blessing in my life. As I always say- if I need to get my arms around them, I can.

  4. What a wonderful family gathering. The food looked delicious. Everyone was having a great time. Memories were made. That ambrosia salad sounded like heaven came knocking at the door. And.....no snakes came
uninvited. And....I've fallen in love... yes with the ambrosia salad AND with Large Marge.
It was 81 here yesterday. Today it's back in winter coats with some whispers of possible snow. Ohio weather...ugh.

    1. Nope. We didn't see any snakes. I even forgot to warn the kids about the ones we'd seen but I figure with all their running around AND Large Marge being with them, any snakes would head for the woods.
Isn't that a beautiful dog? She is beloved. Oh- and she chewed through her leash yesterday. Chewed right through it.
The ambrosia was indeed worthy of love.
What? It got up to 81 there yesterday? And now possibly more snow? That is crazy-making.

  5. Pearls will fancy-up any outfit! I LOVE your family, your wonderful family, as much as I love my own family. I also love your devilled egg platters and have to find and buy some for my younger son who loves to cook and would use them for family get-togethers.
Biscuits in a skillet? I thought they were baked in the oven.

    1. Oh, River. You are loved by us too. Thank you for being here.
Deviled egg platters are quite common in these parts. I wonder if you could find them there.
I baked the biscuits in the oven IN the skillet. So I just used a very large skillet to bake them in.

  6. Ambrosia (we don't say "salad", just ambrosia) and ham is a perfect complete meal all by itself. Maybe with a biscuit. And the new and improved egg hunt looks like great fun. Your pearls are the icing on the cake of the whole festive event. Thank you for sharing it with us up here in the frozen north of Virginia.

    1. Sometimes it's just called ambrosia here too. It used to be a thing in the south and I wonder if that includes Virginia where anything with any sort of fruit and jello in it was considered a salad, even if the fruit was canned (it always was) in heavy syrup and Cool Whip was involved. These "salads" were cherished at every potluck and church dinner and ladies' luncheons for quite awhile.

    2. Re jello salads - we were in Idaho traveling around years ago and were stunned by the lavish displays of various jello salads at grocery store deli counters. So many colors and ingredients, including one with ham chunks, those sweet red cherries you get in drinks, pineapple chunks. Real health food!

  7. Good Easter and Bad Easter! I have a feeling no one else had an Easter Sunday quite like yours. You and Mr. Moon are not only very fortunate, but you did an incredible job creating this family filled with love and joy. Wish we could have seen Hank and Rachel, too. But what a family!

    1. You're right. We may have been the only family in the world with a Bad Easter and a Good Easter.
I am not quite sure how this family turned out to be the way it is but I surely am glad that it did.
Hank and Rachel will most likely be out and about again soon. They are missed!

  8. Your Easter lunch looks wonderful. We were lucky enough to eat outside too (it's 50/50 here), and I absolutely love those outfits the boys are wearing. I bought pretty much the same stuff for Christmas a couple of years ago, so now I'm thinking of Easter for next year!

    1. I think it is lovely to be able to eat outside at Easter. Flowers are blooming, birds are singing and eating at the feeder while we're eating at the table.
We often are able to eat Thanksgiving outside too. We're lucky.

  10. Love the pearls-and-Frida combo! It's so great how you all hold these meals outdoors. It's a Moon tradition. (I guess it needs to be that way with so many people.) I haven't thought of ambrosia salad in YEARS but now I want some.

    1. I got that Frida shirt at a Forever 21 in the mall so many years ago and honestly, I was too old to be shopping there then. Oh well! I have to think Frida would be well-pleased.
Yep. We do like eating outside when we can.
Listen- you should make some damn ambrosia. It is, well, ambrosia. I mean, eating some every twenty or thirty years can't be that bad, right?

  11. Your Easter and B-day celebration look superb. The smiles show a good time was had by all. The buffet table is festive, and everything looks delicious.
Add pearls to any outfit and the entire look is taken to a new level. I love the juxtaposition. Looking good MM.

  13. Now that we have seen the report from the Moon Family Gathering in Lloyd, Easter is Complete! I had a quiet one, having seen each of my offspring at separate events the week before, with some work among my flowers, a walk down to the river and a visit from the little girls next door. So glad you and the love your family brings are in our world. x0x0 N2

  14. I did make a roast lamb dinner for myself last night because feasting has been very limited with packing going on here. Now I will be eating leftover lamb rolls for the week! Your gathering does look amazing - love the serving dishes, my style! our ambrosia salad had mandarin slices - when my flatmate first introduced it to me, I didn't know mandarin slices existed in a canned variety.

    1. I know a lot of people eat lamb for Easter which always strikes me as funny, seeing how Jesus is the "Lamb of God."
As to mandarin oranges that come from a can- one of my favorite salads is made with them. And not the ambrosia kind. The kind that has actual lettuce and stuff in it.

  15. your family is beautiful, it all just makes me sigh with joy and comfort. And please...I haven't had a good Ambrosia salad in 30 years.when all of us working at the medical clinic used to have monthly potlucks and Marianne....whom I worked with....always made ambrosia salad (yes, with cool whip) and canned pineapple chunks and mandarins.......ooh boy.....takes me back in time just to think about it and I can almost taste it

    1. yes, another PS....must say loved seeing May and Jessie wearing beautiful aprons while preparing the meal. Aprons seem to be a thing of the past...but my Mother always wore an apron...and anyone who was in the kitchen cooking in *those day* wore an apron.....I still have one of Mom's gorgeous linen aprons....I look at it lovingly with fond memories of all that that *era* evokes but haven't donned it in years. I just keep it, look at it every now and then.... it's one of the very few *things* I will keep forever.......

    2. Years back, I somehow acquired a small collection of vintage aprons. I used to hang them on the kitchen wall (of course I did!) but the last time I took them down to wash them, I just never put them back. I do have one hanging in my laundry room though.
But May and Jessie certainly did justice to those aprons, didn't they?
Seems like almost everyone has a memory of ambrosia salad. It's too bad we all got so healthy and shit and quit eating something that made us all so obviously happy.

  17. I love everything about this post. You had the best kind of family Easter, the only thing that could have made it better is if Hank and Rachel could have been there too but when I got to that last picture of you I stopped and looked at my friend for a long time. You look wonderful in your Frida Khalo tee, and the framed photo of you in the foreground is fantastic too, and there are just so many layers of interesting things to discover in that one image. You lead a rich life Mary Moon. You’re making your little corner of this rubbled up blue marble a sweet hopeful place. You do that every day just by going about your life, leading with love.
