More Pictures And So Forth

I forgot to post this picture of the loveliest rose bower at the nursery yesterday. I need one of those.
Badly.

The biggest news from Lloyd today is that we finally got some rain. I doubt it was a quarter of an inch but by golly, that was enough to hang our hats on hope. Of a sort. We even got some thunder rumbles and it was fantastic. The way the dirt smelled after the first little shower was almost enough to knock me out. The birds' songs seem to be more cheerful, the air is a little bit cooler, and already the small amount of grass we have in the back yard looks greener and less crunchy. There's not any more rain in the forecast for at least a week but at least we know the rain function is still capable of working.

So the news on the floor of the cabin is not good.
At all.
The guy's definition of "great" was definitely not the same as Glen's definition of great. If anything, I think he believes it to look as bad or even worse than it did before. I finally saw picture and trust me when I say that it looks nothing like what Glen wanted or described or a tile sample he gave the guy to use as a color guide.
But, there were no fisticuffs, Glen did pay him, although not as much as had originally been agreed on, and lawyers are not going to be involved.
Let it go...

Glen'll figure out some way to get the floor to a place he can live with but it's going to mean more money and more effort and more time.
And that's that story. He's rather down but he'll figure things out. He always does.

I did not do a whole lot today. On my garden stroll I took a few pictures.

Cucumbers are blooming. So are the volunteer acorn squash. As I keep saying, I think they are acorn squash.
Guess what else is blooming?

The rattlesnake beans. Come on, baby!

The vines are eager and energetic, trying already to reach up to outer space.

While playing with my new camera I got this picture of a rose with an ant in it.
And speaking of ants, fuck them very much, I got attacked twice today by fire ants but survived. Thank goodness I'm not allergic or I probably would have died, trying to dial 911 and not having the breath to report my emergency. This is not a joke. I have no idea how many bites I got. The first attack occurred when I was trying to remove some detritus from the compost pile that Mr. Moon had told me was not going to break down. He'd warned me there were many, many ants in the pile but I didn't remember. And I didn't realize I was being attacked until the fire in "fire ants" started flaming on my feet which is how it always happens. They're so tiny you can't feel them until they begin to inject their fiery poison into you at which point you're probably covered in them, which my feet and hands were, although the hands to a lesser degree.
The second attack came when I was watering the porch plants and decided to rip a raggedy spider plant out of its pot so that I could use the pot for a different plant, only to discover the dirt in the pot was housing an entire colony of the little bastards. This attack may have been even worse. I finally gave up trying to dump the dirt out of the pot and just knocked it off the porch and onto the ground below. I really didn't want to break that particular pot because it's a good one, but at that point I could not have given a fuck. I just wanted Satan's emissaries off my porch.
The pot did not break.
And as far as I'm concerned, that spider plant can rot in hell. It's looked shitty for a long time and I guess I know why now.
And as an update- that plant I put in a pot after digging it up in the kitchen porch bed? It's doing GREAT!
Of course.

This is a picture of a pineapple guava flower. The flowers, along with the resulting fruit, are edible. I did not eat this one though, I just took its picture.

Glen planted a few of the fruit trees when he got home from Lake Seminole or perhaps only one. I'm not sure. He was tired. He got up way early to get there on time and nothing can be as fatiguing as huge disappointment. And of course the way he's planting these trees is THE RIGHT WAY which involves all sorts of hard work. Now me? I'd probably just dig a hole and stick the plant in it and sprinkle it with some fertilizer but he's doing all sorts of things to amend the soil with the composted horse shit and a little bit of organic fertilizer and he makes sure the dirt is all broken up and nice and crumbly to make a welcoming home for the root ball. And then he covers the whole area with pine straw after he gets the tree in the ground and this involves a shovel and post hole diggers and other implements of importance in the process.

Here's some roses I picked today.

And finally, Mr. Moon trailered his boat home from the lake because...
A week from Monday we are heading back down to Roseland for a week to stay in the cabana by the pool with the spitting lions and he wants to bring the boat so we can do a little river exploration and he can go fishing at the place he hired a guide to take him on our last trip down.
Am I excited?
You bet.
I ordered a new bathing suit today. I hope it gets here in time. It fucking better. I paid seventeen extra dollars for express delivery. It's a simple black Speedo with no frills or fanciness.

And one more thing. Today is my Lis's birthday. I called her and she sounds tired. I wonder why?
Well, as she said, someone has been overbooking them. And they've been doing festivals, not only playing but also selling Lis's artwork and having to camp at the festivals and they've been doing a lot of recording in their studio which means that Lis has been making meals for the people being recorded and hostessing them with every bit of southern hospitality in her soul which is a whole lot.

Here's a picture from ten years ago when Lis was here for her birthday.

That was August loving his fairy great-godmother and Jessie loving her fairy godmother.
That was one second ago.

Happy birthday, my darling Lis!

And I must post this picture of Levon which Jessie just sent.

Vergil had to go shopping today for some business clothes as he is going to DC this week to his company's headquarters and Levon somehow managed to get some new outfits of his own. As Jessie said, he is feeling himself.

August? Well, he spent the entire time reading the new books they just got at the library. Here he is, doing, as Jessie said, what he does.

Our boys. Every child different. Every child adored for exactly who they are.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Those kids are so much their own selves, it's great.
I'm sorry Mr Moon is still unhappy with the floor, but I guess it's good not to have a fist fight. But still..

    1. I know. But Glen is a gentle giant and not quick to anger.
      But damn.

  2. I have several large garden pots that are host to zillions of ants. I don't water them enough and when I do the ants come pouring out over the sides trying to get away from the flood. I wear rain boots when I do go out to water.
I wish I could send my son-in-law to help Glen with the cabin floor. He works in concrete construction, has an excellent reputation and can probably do exactly what Glen is asking for AND he would do a sample size piece first to be sure it is right.

    1. Ants can be a torment, can't they? But I know they have a very important place in our ecological system. If they'd just leave us alone though...
I wish you could send your son-in-law too! That would be excellent.

  3. Oh yes...our boys. My DIL is at this very moment getting in to a birthing pool in Oxford, about to have our 4th grandson.....their first!

    2. Baby Liam arrived a couple of hours after I wrote ! All Ok, though he had " pooed" before birth so they had to stay overnight . Just waiting to hear back from my son if they had a good night. His name is a common one in Slovenia where my DIL is from, and also well known in UK. Just heard....they got some good sleep after 4am!

    3. That's wonderful news! And Liam is not an entirely uncommon name in the US. Yes, meconium in the amniotic fluid can be a worry but definitely not always. May all be well and they get to go home today.

  4. Ooh those fire ants! I WOULD be dead. We used to see them at times when out hiking in Southern California. I got didn’t linger. Be careful!
Such a shame about the floor. With all the brilliant work Glen is doing, that truly sucks. And, oh, those boys! And, oh, Jessie. And, oh Lis. So much beauty and goodness in your life.

    1. Some ant piles are quite visible but not always and when that happens and you get surprise attacked, it's horrible. I have literally stripped off my overalls in the garden before to get at them.
There IS so much beauty and goodness in my life. I am the luckiest.

  5. I just enjoy reading your posts so much. So sorry about the fire ants. I do remember their bites quite well. Yay to every drop of rain, since we finally had some too. Lovely flowers all!

    1. That makes me so happy, Barbara! Sometimes I just have to wonder WHO wants to read my about my days?
Even the small amount of rain we got has greened things up considerably.

  6. I don't suppose there is anything which can soothe the bites of fire ants?

    1. I really don't know. Over the years I have learned that I need to just wait out the time it takes for the burning and stinging and itching to go away. For me that generally takes about half an hour to forty-five minutes. Cold water on them feels good. Antihistamine cream can help.

  7. Sorry to hear about the fire ants! Hope your feet/hands are feeling better today.
Too bad about the disappointing floor. Mr. Moon will figure it out as he seems good at that whatever "it" happens to be.
I'm glad you are going to Roseland. Sounds like the perfect getaway for you two right now.

    1. My feet and hands are fine. I've been stung so many times over the years that my body just shrugs and goes on its merry way.
This floor is going to drive Glen crazy. He has options though. All, of course, meaning more time and more money.

  8. Those grandsons are certainly long legged! All of them are going to make you look very small. The floor? Oh dear. Tim can be quite persnickety about his vision as well. It won't go over well, but maybe some rugs?

    1. My two oldest grandsons already make me feel tiny, one being about 6'4" an the other 5'9". My granddaughter Maggie will be taller than me in a little over a year, I think.
Rugs will be used but you'd need carpet to really cover this shit up and we don't want that.

  9. Look at the legs on that boy, that boy as in August. And Levon, he knows he is, as ZZTop puts it, a well dressed man.

There are fire ant mounds all over the place here, big ones, all brought up by 3" of rain. Paisleigh stepped in one and her poor little foot was covered in welts so after the burning stopped we walked around the yard making her point out all the ant beds so now she knows what to watch out for.

    1. August's body reminds me of pictures of his Boppy when he was August's age. All legs. Levon has his own sense of style, doesn't he?
I HATE it when children get the full ant attack. It's so unfair. Good idea to walk her around and show her what's what.

  10. agree that fire ants are a scourge.....and by the time you feel the first flame hit you they are ALL in your shoes...I detest them. I'm in awe of how long those boys legs are..... wow. Your May reminds me of them in that way also...like a racehorse.....all limbs! Ah....the land of the spitting lion pool and Mr Peacock.... you both will so enjoy a week of that joy!

    1. Do you have fire ants in California? They are indeed a scourge.
There are some mighty long legs in this family.
I'm looking forward to that lion pool.

    2. of course we have fire ants! LOL! I try to kill their nests by pouring boiling water over/in them....it does work....but one must be persistent and do it several times..BOILING water.. I hate those suckers. My husband Buzz was super allergic to them. me...they just hive up and burn like hell for an hour or two and elicit much cursing....and then subside..............

  11. Hopefully, you'll find a solution to make the floor acceptable or even perfect. I tend to rip thing out if they do not look right. I can live with a tiny flaw but nothing beyond that.
The fruit trees will surely flourish under your care and GM's planting techniques.
Roseland will be wonderful and doing some boating sounds equally good. Enjoy!

    1. Hard to rip a cement floor out but I get your meaning. And this is definitely not a tiny flaw. It is a joke.
I have high hopes for the fruit trees.
I think I will love going up the river with Glen.

  12. Well, I admire Mr. Moon's restraint in not going off on the guy about the floor. Too bad it's still not to his liking, and I hope it won't take too much work to get it there.

Your camera really DOES do nice close-ups!

Love the pics of August and Levon, very much their own individuals. What is August holding in his hand? A coat hanger?

    1. Glen has not suffered that fool gladly, I'll tell you that. I mean, he's not walking around and cursing him. It's more like vast disappointment in the difference between what he promised and what he delivered.
I'm trying with the camera. I really, really should take the time to read about the best ways to use it and perhaps even watch a few videos.
Yeah. I think August has a hanger in his hand. Like the kind that shorts might be hung on in the store.

  13. I love how all the kids in your family are just so entirely their individual selves. And how those boys are sprouting. Look at those long legs on August. I need to investigate the back story on the floors!

    1. August's legs are just getting longer and longer. Well, of course but my goodness, it's happening so rapidly. YOU know. You have a long-legged boy.
Oh, the floor story is somewhere between tragedy and comedy. As most things are.

  15. I am thankful I don't live in Florida and we don't have fire ants here, thank god. I just checked and apparently we do have them in Canada, but not Alberta. I would not be a happy camper.
I can't believe how tall those boys are getting!
