Just More Of The Usual Stuff

And here we have the mean, mean, biting machine, Maurice Moon, this morning after I got out of bed. She wasn't too interested in getting up as it was quite early, being a pottery day. I finally had to gently lift her off the bed so I could make it. She told me in no uncertain terms that she was not ready to face the day by saying, "Mrrpt!" which is her all-purpose word for displeasure.
She uses it many times a day. And often in the night if I move my legs when she's lying on them or (GOD FORBID!) I try to turn over. Sometimes it pisses her off so much she just jumps off the bed and stalks away.

So pottery was lovely and it was sweet, as always, to be with Jessie whose project for the day was to try and make end-of-the-year teacher appreciation gifts of extremely cool trinket dishes. You know- like you can put your rings and earrings and things in?
I got my hibiscus off the shelf and worked at trying to smooth it some and reinforce some places that were obviously too thin and then to make the lady part in the center. It looks a great deal like the other one I made but I don't think it's as good.
Anyway, it's on the shelf to be fired. So that is that. I forgot to take a picture. That's how thrilled I was.
That took me almost the entire 2 1/2 hours of class but not quite so I got out my leaf platter that I was supposedly painting at home and did a little more glaze painting on it. I am becoming a tiny bit excited about this project. It, too, started as an end of class effort but I think I may end up liking it.

Now I am going to show you something that our Lizzie from class is making. She just got inspired one day, as one does, and made a ceramic whippet. Her dogs are wippets and she loves them to pieces. So this is what they are looking like.

I mean- WHOA! Aren't they beautiful? Can't you just feel their sleeping dog energy?
She seemingly magically began to pinch them from clay the day she thought of them and we are all blown away.
It's so lovely when inspiration hits and fingers know exactly what to do to make the inspiration a reality.

Of course I won't be at pottery next week because I'll be down south, basking in the beauty of that area of the state, watching sunsets over the river, swimming in the lion pool, going to the beach, checking out the thrift stores in the land of the Rich People, eating delicious foods, cooking delicious foods, listening to the bamboo clanking in the breeze, seeing the birds come to roost every night, being with my sweetie, laughing with my sweetie, being sweet with my sweetie.
So yeah, although I'll miss not seeing everyone at pottery, I'll be okay. I'll survive.

Speaking of my sweetie, he got dental work done today. Fairly serious dental work. He says he's not in pain but he really does have a high pain threshold. He's doing all the things you're supposed to do and not doing the things you're not supposed to do. I stopped by Publix on my way home to get his antibiotic prescription and while there I bought yogurt drinks, yogurt, watermelon chunks, and ice cream. One needs a reward for the pain and agony of dental procedures.
This is well known, as Mma Makutsi from "The No. One Ladies' Detective Agency" series by Alexander McCall Smith always says with such complete and utter authority that no one would dare challenge her.

Here's a magnolia blossom opening up on the tree beside my back porch.

It's way too high for me to stick my nose in it but here are two buds which are a bit lower.

The blooming of the Magnolia Grandifloras has well and truly begun.
Must be almost Jessie's birthday.

And okay, okay. Here's a zinnia from Jessie's zinnia bed.

I am not sure I've ever seen one that exact color.
Lemon chiffon?

Another day, another flower.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Our cat Styx, of blessed memory, was a very large and very handsome black male who often slept with our older daughter. She once was awakened in the middle of the night by Styx who had braced all four legs against the wall and was using his considerable strength to push her over so he could have more room in the bed. 1. That's hysterical! Maurice would do that if there were a wall to push against, I'm sure. Her efforts would be far more puny though.

    Maurice! She’s perfect. Clearly.

Sounds like a lot of fun to look forward to next week!

  3. I'm so looking forward to your hibiscus ....someday...I felt it had great promise. Lizzie's whippets are stunning....boy, was she able to capture their essence! And the magnolias...they don't grow here..but I have fond memories of them in my youth..... I always seem to find the fond youthful memories in your posts....like your yesterday cornbread in the air fryer? oh.....don't get me started...major childhood memory that was so sweet that your photo brought me tears.........

    1. Aren't those whippets just beautiful?
I sure am glad I live where these magnolias grow. And I'm glad I can bring back memories for you, even if they do make you cry.

  4. My zinnias all seem to be pink and red. Nice, but not adventurous.
Those whippets are very very good. That's some talent.

    1. I planted a few variegated zinnias again this year. I hope everyone of them makes it. They are so beautiful. Well, they all are.
I told Lizzie that your compliment comes from a woman who knows what she's talking about.

  7. Maurice looks so comfortable in the bed, I would have left him there. I used to leave Lola and make the bed once she got up several hours after I did.

    1. I did leave Maurice there for a little while but I always make the bed before I leave for pottery so she had to move. I told her I was sorry though.

  8. Oh my gawd, Lizzie's whippet sculptures are so perfect and wonderful! I knew a gay male couple once who bred whippets. One was even an accredited whippet judge and used to go all over North America judging that class in dog shows. And as I learned, don't EVER make the mistake of calling a whippet a greyhound!

    1. Yikes! Yeah, I guess greyhounds and whippets are entirely different breeds, aren't they? Don't tell Lizzie I said that.
I like thinking about a person who becomes accredited as a dog breed judge and going all over the country to judge them at dog shows. Cool!

  13. I am always in awe of people who can make things like those whippets. Three people in our pottery group can do stuff like that. In fact, the only man in our group started in January and the very first thing he made was a whale. Since then he has made all kinds of animals. I stick with things that use a template or mold:) Those whippets are so beautiful.
I hope you guys have a wonderful trip next week.
I wanted to tell you that I looked up online, which Levi's fit older women the best. 314 Levi's came up. I went to the store, tried them on and they feel like pajamas and fit me!
My friend and I are going to the new pottery studio today. I'll take photos and let you know how it was. I may be a little excited.
I hope Glen feels better soon. I'm afraid of dentists, but can you imagine a world without dentists? Even scarier:)
    Love that zinnia.

    1. You hand built that coil vase and I doubt you used a template or mold for that. I just went back and looked at it again- I really love it.
Hurray for Levi's coming through for you! There's probably a pair for every woman. So many styles.
Yes. I want to hear about the new pottery studio. Very much.
And you're so right- it would be a very different world without dentists.

  14. Maurice Moon, deceptively cute. I hate her, I love her- there is no in-between. Amazing how Lizzie can turn a lump of clay into an elegant little sleeping whippet. Stunning art, that! I am so excited for you to go on your trip. I feel so happy when you are there. In a swimsuit no less! Perfect.

    1. I only hate Maurice when she bites me. So, like once a day? Mostly though, instead of hate, I feel puzzlement. How can she still be doing this?
Isn't Lizzie talented? And she just...did it one day. Like it was waiting to spring forth from her fingers.
My Speedo bathing suit got here earlier than I thought it would so I have TWO bathing suits I like.

  15. Those whippets are amazing! They really do capture the spirit of a snoozing dog. I love them.

Glad that pottery went well and that Mr. Moon's dental work (ugh) is out of the way.

I think I've said this before, but HOW CAN YOU HAVE BLOOMING ZINNIAS already? My zinnias are tiny, tiny seedlings with two leaves, and have been for weeks!

    1. Yes. Sleeping dogs, peaceful dogs. Sweet dogs.
Oh, Glen has a lot more dental work to go but this is a good beginning.
I guess it's just warmer here than it is in London. Do your zinnias ever reseed?

  16. Lizzie has real talent as shown in her whippets.
Getting away to Roseland sounds ideal for some true R&R as well as boating, thrifting, restaurant meals and swimming.
Getting dental surgery out of the way is wise. Infection can be dangerous.
MM appears very comfy in what she imagines to be her bed. If she could, she'd likely have a "do not disturb" sign posted. That cat!

    1. I think we all agree that Lizzie has a talent she never even knew she had. I love that!
Roseland is always good for me. And Glen loves it too, especially since he figured out a most excellent place to fish.
I love it when Maurice is so sleepy she just stays in bed. I like seeing her all cozy.
