I got a text from Hank last night saying that he and his wife were going to Monticello today for lunch at the Mexican and then some thrift shopping and would I like to join them?
Well, of course I would!
And so I did.
I am just living the life of leisure here, folks.
A good friend of Hank and Rachel joined us too and we were a chit-chattery bunch at Rancho Grande where the tables were constantly filling with hungry people and then refilling when fully satiated and satisfied people left. That restaurant, as I have said many times before, is the absolute example of the American dream. Work your ass off, don't be afraid to take chances, dare to dream, and see what can happen. And you know what? I bet that Jefferson County overwhelmingly voted for Trump, never even thinking about how it is quite possible that when he takes office, the people who have built Monticello's favorite restaurant may well be rounded up and sent to camps or back to where they came from. And/or the people who roof their houses, build their houses, repair their houses, pick their fruits and vegetables and tend their pecan groves and soy bean fields as well.
The image of jack-booted officers knocking down doors to take custody of immigrants is one of the things I am most frightened of happening after the inauguration.
But, here we are in the dead days of the last week of December and the iodine-stained one is not yet in power although he thinks he is and acts like he is.
This is not what I came here to say tonight but obviously, it was all lurking in my head, just waiting for the right moment to pop out and present itself on the page.
Or screen, as it were.
So we had a great lunch and I brought home enough leftovers for another meal and then we went to one of my favorite antique and vintage stores and roamed and rambled around there for quite awhile. They really do have a nice selection of antique furniture and mid-century furniture, all kinds of glassware from vases to china and everything in between, old tools, old toys, linens, Tupperware- oh, just everything. You know. This is the same place from which I rescued Dorothy Anne, the doll everyone thought was creepy but who just needed some love. And of course, I had to take another picture of these arches upstairs.
Here's something I saw that I thought perhaps I should buy and put in the Glen Den while the man is off hunting.
Nah. I would not do that to Mr. Moon. He would never kill Bambi's mother.
On purpose, anyway.
Sigh.
A year or so ago, Mr. Moon went to one of those places where they sell stuff from unclaimed airline baggage. He was on one of his trips with the boys. And he bought me a sweet, thin, very simple hammered silver bangle bracelet which I liked very much and for Christmas this year, he bought me another silver bangle with a flower design. Now I have been collecting silver bangles since I was in college. The first time. Over the years I've gotten more in Mexico and at antique stores and I do have a beautiful collection. The sound of those bracelets jangling on my arm is the sound of "Mama's going out dancing" to my children. And although I always thought I'd be the sort of old woman who wore red lipstick and her silver bracelets, no matter what, it turns out that I'm not. Not really. It's hard to do yard work in silver bracelets. Especially the beautiful big fancy ones. And red lipstick just gets on my teeth and caught in my mustache hairs.
But a few little skinny bangles can still make a lovely tinkling sound and don't get in the way so I've been wearing the two that Glen got me the last few days and when I was in Wag today I saw another silver bracelet, a tiny bit wider than the two I was wearing but not heavy or showy and they wanted twelve dollars for it and so I bought it. I brought it home and polished it and this is what it looks like on my gnarly, sun-raveged wrist with the other two.
I love every thing about this post except thinking about agent chump and the horrible things brewing in his ugly head. Impossible to keep those thoughts at bay all of the time.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful day you had. The Bambi picture is so sweet and I love your bangles. Mexican is one of our favorites.
Hard to go wrong with Mexican food.
DeleteDid you read the Pickled Cheeto's Christmas message? I wasn't going to but I did and I should not have. He is a sick, sick man.
Hank looks so happy! And did you imagine you could leave Wag with nothing? That would be unusual. I love bangles and can't get them over my big hands. They're never big enough. I did get a custom designed silver Mobius bangle big enough to go on, but it was way too big on my thin little wrist. Just not right. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI've left Wag empty-handed before! You really have to get in the thrifting zone to find the good stuff there. It is so crowded. The bracelet was in a little glass-fronted cabinet and I had to ask if I could look at it. I have no idea how I even saw it for all the other stuff in there.
DeleteSometimes you are just too funny! I am sure the Pope would savor your salmon and slurp up any slice of pie you might have handy, as well!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't doubt he'd have a martini too!
DeleteI think it's that Moorish roof line like the Alamo and so many other Texas buildings.
ReplyDeleteYes! That and the black and white which is what that movie was filmed in.
DeleteFunny you should mention The Last Picture Show. It popped up in my Prime video feed and since its been about 30 years, I started watching. But I just couldn't handle the sadness of Cloris Leachman's character. I had to turn it off.
ReplyDeleteHow many hours and dollars I spent in thrift stores I couldn't calculate. But things do not entice me anymore, although I love to hear of others finds.I also fear for the migrants who don't know what their future holds.
That was me, Carol.
DeleteIt really was a depressing movie and I'm sure it was meant to be. Larry McMurtry had such a strange and confusing relationship with the town where he grew up. Archer, Texas. He wrote an entire series of books with those characters in them. I love them.
DeleteHave you ever seen Texasville? That's a movie sequel to Last Picture Show and it's not as depressing.
Hank and Rachel are so happy. Makes me smile.
ReplyDeleteMe too!
DeleteNice to see you enjoying yourself!
ReplyDeleteIt's nice.
DeleteThe Last Picture Show, indeed. One of my favorite movies. I went to see that in nursing school. The bracelets are really cool. Great pic of Hank and Rachel. Wag the Dog looks like a fun place.....free bibles...only take one. Hmmm. I'll keep the comments to myself. Glad you got out for some good Mexican food and fun.
ReplyDeleteParanormal John
I saw The Last Picture Show when I was home from college on a break. I remember when it was over thinking, "What the hell?" I liked it and yet, it was so depressing.
DeleteYou can't go anywhere in Jefferson County without some damn Christian situation going on. Well, come to think of it, I don't think I've seen any religious stuff at the Mexican restaurant. And you know you can say whatever you want here about religion.
Very nice bangles. I would love to browse around in Wag the Dog and that other shop with the arches. Your thrift shops seem to have much better stuff than ours do.
ReplyDeleteThe shop with the arches isn't a thrift store. It's an antique and vintage store but they have some good things there and their prices are not terrible.
DeleteI know exactly what you mean about trying to declutter but having a weakness for dishes and bowls!! Recently I've been quite good but man it's hard to resist isn't it!
ReplyDeleteI just don't resist when it comes to bowls I really like. We saw one yesterday that was so big that, as Hank said, "You could wash a baby in there." You could have, too. But i didn't buy that one. I have no babies to wash.
DeleteThe newlyweds still look like they’re in love! They warm my heart. You are so much more worthy than the Gee Dee Pope. The monkey lamp (which I love) and the baby art go surprisingly well together.
ReplyDeleteI do believe they are still in love! They are so sweet to each other. It's nice to see.
DeleteDid you read about the Pope inviting a whole bunch of comedians to the Vatican? I mean...WTF?
The monkey lamp has a mother monkey (the big one you see) and her young'un, down beside her knee. So, yes- it goes well with babies. With logic like that, you can see why my decor has not been pictured in all the finest Interior Design magazines.
that is a sweet little picture. there was a small old fashioned picture at the antique store where I worked on Saturdays for about 5 years of a little girl holding a bluebird that I always liked but never bought. the woman who hd the buildings next door always wanted it but for some reason Donna would not sell it to her. when she closed the store and everything left was offered at an estate sale, the picture was still there. I thought about buying it but instead I called the woman and told her to come get it. she did.
ReplyDeleteI never got in the habit of wearing jewelry because I worked in the shop with abrasives and chemicals but I have several silver bracelets that I love. I should get in the habit of wearing them now.
I wonder why Donna would not sell that picture? How odd.
DeleteI'm glad you finally made her happy with it.
Yes! I keep thinking that if I just get in the habit of wearing bracelets, it'll become second nature. I already almost always wear a necklace. They don't get in the way of anything.
Ha! That cloud photo IS very "Last Picture Show"!
ReplyDeleteAs usual, I envy your thrifting outings. Thrift stores in the UK are just not the same. They tend to be very small, for one thing, at least in the cities. I have occasionally made good finds in them but I miss the cavernous Goodwills and BGGSBJ thrift stores of the USA.
I wonder if everyone gets the same free Bible, like from a stash of new ones? Or if every time they get a donated Bible they add it to a stack, and those are the ones they hand out?
Wag the Dog is not tiny but it is definitely not as big as it should be to hold all that stuff. You can barely get down the aisles. I think they get a lot more items than they sell.
DeleteI think the Bibles are like Gideon Bibles or something. Cheap and mass-produced. I remember that when I graduated from nursing school, they gave us a new testament with a white cover! Ha. And when I say "they" I believe that it was the Gideons.
There is no way mass deportation can go ahead. Who would clean the toilets, take care of the children, drive the cabs, pick the fruit and veg, or suck the cocks? The US hasn't really gotten rid of slavery, it just pays a little better. People being exploited for starvation wages still runs the economy.
ReplyDeleteI love that little picture that you bought. It's lovely and old and sweet. I always wanted to be one of those women who wears jewelery but it turns out that I can't stand wearing it. I do try, but it bothers me. That and Katie who would grab hold of it.
I've never seen "The Last Picture Show" but that last photo immediately reminded me of an old movie. Maybe I'll have to take a look for that movie.
Take care Mary.
I agree with you completely. I just read a thing today where Trump has hired over a thousand workers from other countries who are here on the visa that allows unskilled workers to be here if they have jobs. He's such a fucking hypocrite. Of course he does with all those hotels and resorts. He must need so many people to keep the grounds kept, the rooms clean, the food cooked, the diners waited on, the drinkers drinks made, and so on and so forth. Whether or not he has any on the payroll to suck dick is something I don't know. I do know that he's married to an immigrant and we can only imagine how that visa came to be satisfied.
DeleteIsn't it funny that we don't turn out to be the people we thought we would?
"The Last Picture Show" is pretty depressing. Just a warning. It's a damn good movie though.
the Pope is not worthy- Would you serve it to Keef on Keithmas? That is the measure!!
ReplyDeleteSweet photo of the newlyweds, charming pair indeed. I would love to have lunch with them!
Your new bracelet is wonderful, I like it best- looks a bit like Arizona.
As for the Mump regime and deportation- too expensive, round them up , house them in old internment camps and have a free work force! They have a plan...
I would not be embarrassed to serve dear Keith that salmon any day of the year but you know I'd have to make him a Shepard's Pie. And I would not let anyone crack the crust!
DeleteI'm sure that Hank and Rachel would love to have lunch with you, too. As a matter of fact, so would I!
The bracelet does remind me of Arizona or one of those states out there in the Great West.
I'm sure Asshole Dump has a lot of plans and it delights me to see that he's backtracking or changing some of them already.
Your day with Hank and Rachel made a good time for all. The Mexican restaurant and the shops sound excellent. You found some great buys. Love the silver bracelet(s).
ReplyDeleteRecently, Trump said he got elected due to the high price of groceries and overall rising costs. Many had no idea the downside of their vote.
Chaos is in our future.
Oh, Susan. I beg to differ. People absolutely knew what Trump was promising beyond lower prices. White America for White Americans, mainly. But I do agree that there will be much chaos.
DeleteYou bangle bracelets are very nice.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteSalmon and spinach with edamame beans and toasted sesame seeds... sounds wonderful. Id be happy with that anywhere - as anyone should.
ReplyDeleteIt's a very fine combination and quick and easy to make.
DeleteMs. Moon those first few paragraphs of this post has me loving you more.
