A Seemingly Necessary Folly

When Mr. Moon and I went to Monticello on Friday to celebrate our anniversary by early voting, he wanted to go into the courthouse to look up legal documents on some real estate. While he did that I walked across the street to see what Wag The Dog had but before I went in there, I stopped at a little shop right next to it that the last time I went in was so potpourri-ed and polyestered that it held no interest for me but I'd seen these lamps in the window that had been intriguing me for weeks, if not months, and I thought I'd pop in and see what they were asking for them.
To my surprise and delight, the store is now a vintage place with some very old things and some not-so-old but interesting things and I wandered around to check it all out. There was nothing that really made my heart sing and I was about to leave when I saw that purse you see above, hanging with some other regular, more conventional purses, and it might as well have reached out, grabbed me, and covered me in kisses.
I don't think I've discussed my purse obsession lately and in fact, I have not bought a new purse in well over a year which is a sort of record for me. Unlike my staunch monogamy when it comes to marriage, I can be tempted like a tart when it comes to cheating on my purse with a new one.
I took the purse off the bar it was hung on and I did the thing where you open it up and check out all the pockets and the sections and, if it's a pre-owned bag, as this one is, you have to get in there and smell it and feel it and squeeze it a little. You have to put it on your shoulder and see how that feels.
My favorite purses are bag-like. Or maybe sack-like. The leather has to be soft. Very soft. I don't like structured bags. I just do not. It may be that in a former lifetime I was some sort of herb gatherer or something and carried a bag I'd made myself from a hide that I had tanned and probably chewed until it was soft as butter although butter had probably not been invented at that time.
Bags, bowls, and baskets make me happy. Things that hold things. I believe it's uterine-related.
So back to this purse. It smelled good. Someone had obviously restored the leather beautifully. No stains on the lining, the snaps and zippers all worked. It was practically perfect in every way but it was so big. Big. Bigger than I need. Big like you could put two newborns in it if you had to.
Or even just wanted to.
I sighed inwardly and put it back with the other purses and looked around some more but it kept calling me back.
"Mary. No one else will appreciate me like you do," it crooned. And I knew without a doubt that if I did not buy it, I would be coming back later to do just that.
So, I bought it.

It really is way too big for me. I hardly ever see newborns that need toting around. I could seriously use it as an overnight bag. Easily.
But, I transferred the contents of my old purse into the new one and that gave me a little buyer's remorse because my things in no way come close to filling all that space WHICH I DO NOT NEED but I now own a beautiful, soft, squishy, Italian leather bag that pleases me on some very deep and primitive level.
If any of my children want the bag, I might give it to them but before I do that or decide to just keep it as an overnight bag, I want to carry it for awhile, just for the pleasure of it.

I took it to town today and it behaved itself very well. I had an odd experience, though. I have the dress I want to wear to Hank and Rachel's wedding and I ordered a beautiful slip to go under it because it is shockingly sheer. The slip has gorgeous lace on the bottom which will peek out from under the hem of the dress which is fine with me but there is a flaw in the plan- the bodice of the slip comes up higher than the bodice of the dress. So I took it to the alterations lady who has done such good work for me and showed her what I wanted. She was horrified. "No. It's wrong!"
Her English is not so good and whatever language her native one is not a language that I know one word of. I think our previous conversations have consisted of, "Try on," "I know!" and "Yes, yes."
And I thought that's how it would go today but she insisted that it would be wrong to cut the bodice lower and I really do not understand why but she's the expert. She even told me- "I could make money doing this for you but it's wrong! No!"
Okay.

And so I thanked her and packed up my slip and I guess that I'll just be going to the wedding with a slip that shows both on the top and on the bottom and that will be the way it is.
I can see it now. Someone will say, "Hey! Your slip is showing!" and I'll be like, "Oh no! Where?" Lily suggested that I just decorate the part of the slip that will show at the neckline. Like with fancy beads or something. Not a bad idea but I think not.

La-di-dah. La-di-dah.

Shrimp salad tonight. The shrimp, eggs, and pasta are all cooked and in the refrigerator. I bought Bibb lettuce at the store but did some picking in the garden to add to it for substance and flavor. The garden really isn't looking that bad. It's just a little slow.

Meanwhile, the compost pile is looking great with sprouting potatoes and avocado plants galore.

And that spot gets almost no sun at all and is never watered so go figure.

Would you look at these roses?

They're my anniversary roses and they just keep opening and looking more velvety gorgeous every day.

And I never even asked the price of the lamps that lured me into the shop in the first place. All thoughts of them flew out of my head when I saw that soft, soft leather. Don't know where I'd put them anyway. But I might have to go back and check them out.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Oh wow- another bag obsessed woman!😂I also love bowls, baskets, and bags.. I don’t think there’s a cure!! I’ve learned to make my own baskets, and I have sewed some bags too.. but I’m still tempted when I see one! You know, it sounds like your new bag will easily fit a cardigan in case you need it, for those chilly days coming up..😉😄 And- a belated happy anniversary wish for you and your beloved!❤️ xo, Rigmor

    1. Ah! So it's not just me! I still need to learn to basket weave.
The purse is big enough for a cardigan. Or two.

  2. I like lamps, my daughter says I have a lamp fetish. I like the ambience but I must have task lighting, it's what I like. Your new purse is very nice and the roses are just luscious.

  3. That bag looks so soft and I can see what you had to buy it! I love resale shops and am always happy to spot a new one.
You will look so lovely and happy at the wedding, Mary, whether your slip is showing or not!

  4. I think butter has been around about as long as cows have had tits! Like ... forever!
That bag is my size of a great bag ... perfect for toting something from the store!

  5. Nice find! Soft leather in bags, shoes and jackets is always preferred. Good leather is wonderful.
Now I am curious about the lamps!
I think it is trendy to show a bit of slip. You'll be fashion forward and looking great in your outfit for Hank's wedding.

    1. Well, I do love the bag. We are getting to know each other.
Not sure the slip bodice showing is going to present as trendy. Or anything but...what is she thinking?

  7. Honey, my slip has been showing for years! Ask me if I care. LOL. You'll look great. If someone says...your slip is showing, just say, "I know...isn't it fabulous?" The purse is really cool. Use it and enjoy it! By all means, go back and check out those lamps. If you buy them, do include a pic of them! Your anniversary roses are just beautiful. Happy Anniversary, by the way!

  8. Over here in Great Britain we call "purses" handbags. To us a purse is much smaller and it is where you keep your money and cards. Americans would refer to it as a "wallet" but here only men carry wallets. My mother always had a handbag close by. I remember the smell of it and inside there would be her purse, a comb, hair brush, handkerchief, notebook, diary, nail scissors, lipstick, face powder, hand mirror etc. and nearly always there would be a bag of sweets (candy) or salted peanuts. Needless to say - for that reason - the thieving fingers of her four sons would often be in there.

    1. Yes! Over here "wallet" is not consigned to any gender. It's just that thing that your cards and money go in while purse is used interchangeably with handbag. I think of a handbag as a bit dated, in fact. I NEVER use the word when referring to purses. Or...what we call purses! My grandchildren know that I generally have chewing gum or a mint in my bag. I'm not much fun, am I?

  9. slips are difficult to find...for a specific purpose...been there and done it.....but you will shine...however the slip works you will be gorgeous Mother of the groom and bride! That bag is to die for. Feel and smell are utmost.....size matters too...but there is nothing like good leather well loved and broken in! Good find!

    1. Yes, and that purse is so nicely broken in. Almost what I would call perfectly.
I doubt I'll be the best-looking woman at the wedding but I will surely be the only mother of the groom there! There will be a stepmother, though, so gosh. I guess I'm not really the only MOTG.

  10. I love a good purse too but when I buy a new one, the old one is dead to me and immediately given away. There must be enough pockets and zippers to hold everything and I like leather too.
It's pretty funny that your seamstress won't fix your slip for you. As you say, maybe she knows best.

    1. Pixie, I'm sort of the same way. I won't say my old purses are dead to me when I get a new one but I can definitely cast them aside. I feel guilty though, somehow, cheating on my former beloveds.
Yeah, I don't know what was up with the alterations lady.

  11. "might as well have reached out and grabbed me", I had that with a watch once, I glanced at the display as I was leaving a store and saw the watch which practically begged to go home with me, so I bought it and loved it for years. I have similar obsessions with bags, bowls and baskets, but manage to control myself simply because I just do not have space here. I walk past bag shops on the opposite side of the street.
Mound up the soil around those potatoes if you can because those stems are where the potatoes will grow from.

God knows I have enough bags, baskets, and bowls but when I'm in thrift stores, I always keep my eyes out just in case a better one comes along...
There's really no soil around those potatoes. They're coming up right through the compost.

  12. Oh you do make me laugh! You are a real tonic.
I have two handbags (purses) one for everyday, which must be twenty years old and another thats used only for going on holiday.
I have no desire for more. But. Let me near a yarn shop and I cannot resist.
I have drawers full. I just can't knit and crochet as quickly as I see more lovely, squishy, tactile, beautiful yarn!
I also spend hours looking at it online. Do you think I have a problem? 😁

We all have our weaknesses, don't we? And honestly, I find it hard to resist yarn too. I will never use up all the yarn I own.
And no. We definitely do not have a problem. We just love what we love.

  13. When we had a family member over from the States earlier this year he complimented me on my bag as he had just bought his wife a similar one. When I told him that I'd paid €10 for it at Turin market he almost fainted, as he'd paid $300 for his wife's. It was probably much better quality than mine (well you would hope so) but since that doesn't bother me I have to admit to feeling pretty smug!

    1. Yes, but you had to travel all the way to Italy! Which, I know, is not that far from you. The bag I got was made in Italy.

  14. I see that Mr Pudding has beaten me to talk about " purse" versus " handbag". I was going to ask what you would call the much smaller receptacle that we ladies in UK call a purse...(.where your money and cards) are kept. Do females also call it a wallet? I have a purse that goes in my handbag, men would have a wallet that is in their pocket.....if you see what I mean?

    1. Yes, wallets are non-gender items here. And I do see what you mean.

  15. That's a gorgeous bag. I don't blame you one bit for bringing it home! And your roses! So beautiful...I've told my husband that for my 50th birthday in March I want to buy some heirloom roses to plant beside our porch. I dream of fragrant cut flowers filling vases in the house on day.

The wedding will be here in no time!!

    1. Oh, you should definitely plant heirloom roses, Jennifer. They smell the best and are beautiful, too. Start researching this now!

  16. Another bag! Amazing. I have a summer one and a winter one. Had them many years. Do you keep all the bags? That's a very ethical seamstress, declining to ruin a slip. She's a keeper.

    1. I do keep the bags until I decide it's time to let some go. I give them to my daughters, mostly.
I wish I could show you this slip and ask you your opinion on why it shouldn't be altered. I'm not sure I get it.

  17. Not sure it's uterine related in my instance as I never got the opportunity to utilize mine, but I too adore bags, bowls and baskets. That new purse is drool worthy and those roses are so beautiful. I rather like the idea of bedazzling up the top of your pretty slip. You could start a new trend. End up on the cover of Vogue. Go big Mary.

    1. Haha, Camille! I don't think you have to have used your uterus to be obsessed with their shape and function of holding things.
If I was a really good embroiderer/beader I might get to work on that slip. Unfortunately, I'm more the sort of embroiderer who should be consigned to denim jackets.

  18. That is a gorgeous purse. I would buy that in a New York minute! I have a black suede Michael Kors purse I bought at Marshall's many years ago and I still get envious comments on it. Also found a crocheted bag purse of a famous name I can't recall at a garage sale for $2. Decided it must have been a gift the recipient didn't care for. Yea Me!

  20. I don't get the allure of purses. they are just something to have to carry all the time whether in hand or slung over a shoulder, something to set down and forget and lose. rather have my hands free and nothing thumping against me when I walk. so I have whittled down what I need to what I can put in pockets. must have pockets in my clothes. anyway, you made me laugh about buying that purse. and as far as the slip goes, good for the seamstress. don't consider it a slip, consider it layering and the lace is supposed to peek out top and bottom.

    1. This is one place you and I differ, Ellen! I often think about your purseless philosophy. I admire you for it but that is not how I am wired.
The bodice of the slip does not have lace on it. It's just plain. I wish it did.

  21. I like that bag, but admit I am not much into handbags. I have a black one I have been using for a year. When it wears out I will find another, but I hate the hunt. And I usually leave it in the van, just grabbing my wallet with a wrist strap to carry into stores. My purse though, can sure collect a wide assortment of oddments--doorknobs, pegboard hooks, screwdrivers, tape, you name it. Gets pretty heavy until I sort it out.
The slip, what a dilemma! I do hope you post photos of your dress when the time comes.

  22. The roses and the bag are just beautiful! I love shrimp salad. Yum! I resigned from FedEx after 5 years yesterday. I had the nicest coworkers, but with the erratic driving I have seen, my age, and my bitched-up wrist, I am very glad to go. I also had to put my only female cat and bed partner down unexpectedly with an aggressive tumor that was painful and likely would have taken her in a few weeks. The symptoms came on very suddenly. So basically the first vet put her through pulling 6 teeth and just made her last days more agonising. The 2nd vet yesterday located the tumor almost right away, after think it was probably an impacted tooth root. It all happened so fast, I think I am still in shock. Sorry to write this book in your comments.
