Who Knows? Not Me (That's The Fourth Time Now I've Said That Today And Which Is The Credo Of The Church Of The Batshit Crazy)

Here we have burn pile number two. This one was created when the guys cut down the Bradford pears. Somehow they managed to burn every bit of those trees up except for a very few small pieces. That fire burned for days and days. Everything you see on it now is from the last few storms we had. Branches to limbs to twigs. And all the stuff in between. Also, some bamboo and wisteria and thorn vines. And rose glory bower. To the left of that pile is the bamboo jungle and to the right are the trees that line the railroad track. When I tell you that we are very, very close to the railroad track what I mean is- we are almost right on top of it. The old building you see in the back is possibly an old barn or...we don't quite know. But there it is.

It's raining pretty good right now, cooling things off. I pulled up my big girl panties this afternoon and went out with the idea of finishing up the side yard on the east side of the house and also the back yard closest to the house. I got the side yard done and trimmed some wisteria while I was at it. I had to keep telling myself, "This is not what you're out here for." It's weird. One thing just leads to another and before you know it, you’re  exhausted and soaking wet from sweat and you still aren't haven't accomplished your intended goal.
Also? Can we talk about mosquitoes? Of course we have mosquitoes. We live in Florida and hell, we live virtually on the back of a swamp but I have never seen mosquitoes quite this bad. There are actual clouds of them. I sprayed with the Real Man Jungle mosquito spray with DEET in it and that barely kept them from attacking. I still got bit a lot.
Glen cleaned up most of the back yard that I was going to do although I did manage to fill up the garden cart with some branches that had fallen in the old kitchen garden and the camellia bed which are adjacent to each other. I also trimmed a sago back and honestly, I want it gone. It is of no use to anyone or any thing in this world that I can see.

So we did what we could. Glen also planted onions so he was the real hero today.

It's raining right now. It's been gray and drizzly all day long but this is real rain. I doubt it's related to Milton but who knows? Not me. (That's the third time I've said that today.) Milton is now officially a hurricane and it's supposedly going to hit Florida on Wednesday down on the west coast further south as yes, a Cat 3. Rob Nucatola is making no promises. He's also not joking around. Anyone who denies that climate change is real at this point is a Grade A, Number 1 asshole.
Oh. What did Donald say about it recently? "It's a hoax."
That's right.
Yes, we've always had hurricanes. Yes, some of them have been very, very big and strong and bad and destructive. But the increase in the number of them and the increase in the size and strength of them is non-debatable.

Speaking of which, Vergil left Tallahassee at 5:30 this morning to get up to Black Mountain. I really have no idea how he's going to get the generator and supplies up to their property but he'll figure it out. I hear that they're doing okay with food and that one of their biggest problems right now is people hiking up there to check on them and then having to be shown the way down because they get lost. I assume that GPS is a little iffy up there right now. From what I've seen and heard online, they are so very lucky to still have their homes and enough food. I'm not sure where they're getting their water but it would appear that they have plenty.

Jessie is working a 12 hour shift tomorrow so Saint Mr. Moon is going to be at their house at 6:00 a.m. because Jess has to leave at 6:15. He'll get the boys fed and ready for school and take them. He says he'll just pretend he's going hunting which also requires a very early start. I'm going to pick the guys up from school and bring them back here to play, eat dinner, take a bath and get their pajamas on so their exhausted mother can come and pick them up after work. I told Jessie to please ask the boys what they wanted me to make them for supper and they want chicken and dumplings although that's what they had for August's birthday dinner a week ago. They do love chicken and dumplings.

All right- here's a question that I'm going to ask simply for my own entertainment. If you came to my house for dinner, what would you want me to cook? The menu ranges from garden vegetables to venison or fish that Mr. Moon brought home, to clam spaghetti, to shrimp salad, to pinto beans and cornbread, to gumbo, to creamy curried cashew butternut and sweet potato soup, to egg rolls to...chicken and dumplings.
And so much more.
I'm just curious.

And please know that this does not mean I'm inviting you over for dinner. You have to know what a recluse I am by now.

I know you're getting tired of pictures like this one.

However, I am still enjoying the fact that Maurice is feeling comfortable and safe enough these days to hang out on our bed. Although she is not really a new cat, she is definitely a happier cat.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Am continually in awe of your work in the garden, despite the heat and insects. IN AWE. I last about 20 minutes at most after thorough dousing with repellent....and that doesn't even phase midges and mosquitos! I hope you hear at some point that Vergil has safely arrived at his family homestead. And....you and Glen will have a fun day tomorrow with the grands......I love ALL your food.....but what I would want most .....is one of your date/prune? cakes?. the ones you bake for new Mums after babies are born.

  2. I think 🤔 Maurice tries to give you love bites, but she hasn't figured out how to do them gently yet! When she tries it again, tell her: No bites, Maurice, no bites! And see what she does!
I am going to hope Milton misses you completely!

    1. I do tell Maurice that. She ignores me.
I, too, hope Milton misses us but still I feel guilty about the fact that it is going to hit other people hard.

  3. What to eat at your house? Well, I'm a vegetarian (which usually throws very cold water on things). At least I'm not Vegan. I'm lacto-ova, which means I do eat some dairy. With your fabulous garden, I'd leave it up to you, Mary.
I'm sure it would be a feast anyway you cut that veggie pie. Honestly, I see your beautiful property and all the work that's required to maintain it and I want to go to bed for a week! I just couldn't handle that at my age. Thank God (or whomever) I live in a condo. Some days that seems too much anymore. I sure hope that the hurricane does not affect you in Lloyd and your family. These things are getting scarier by the week! Let's just hope Asheville and surrounding areas do not get another round of a Helene. It's been stunningly beautiful here in NE Ohio. I fear the Old Man Winter might bend us over and.....ouch! Stay safe, Mary. Keep us posted!

    1. Mmm...I think I would cook you a pot of field peas and rice. Also, a mess of collards, mustards, and turnip greens. Kale might be involved. Cornbread or sourdough or some sort of bread would be served as well.

    2. I was lacto ovo for a long time, and vegan for a bit, and now I'm pescatarian (so I'm one of those, ugh) and Mama has always made me the best meals I've never had in my life. A lot of people are suspicious of okra, but her okra and tomatoes is a dish I need and request, it is home in a bowl. Greens (mustards and collards both) unctuous and toothy, with a little pepper vinegar? Yes and yes. Give her a minute, she'll make a biscuit. The southern kind, soft and giving inside, flakey and so very tender slight crunch on the outside. My very favorite meal ever is Mama's okra and tomatoes, black eyed peas, greens, biscuits, and apple cake with caramel frosting. Paranormal John, as a vegetarian, you would be well fed. I just remembered, also cornbread. Really, there no limit to her talents.

    3. Oh, May. I love you so much. Please write a book. The world needs your words.

    4. Yes, I was a vegetarian teenager, well fed in the house of May’s mama! These days I would also appreciate fish for dinner, but I have such fond memories of a mind blowing vegetarian cornbread casserole! Everything Mary makes is the best down home homemade goodness you’ll ever have the pleasure to be lovingly nourished by!

  4. You're like pioneers in the old west, hacking through the forest. The amount of work it takes to keep a clear patch around your house is awesome to me!
Well, here's the skinny! I'd have to stay a week because I want all the good foodies you speak of, prune cake first. I would help you and we'd have a good old time. Just kidding, I know that would be too stressful for you.
Kudos to Vergil and all the others getting the world right again.

    1. Thanks, Deb. I wish I didn't get stressed out so easily but the fact is, I do. But I can imagine a different, parallel world where I am far more able to be with people.

  5. At "Mer's Southern Restaurant" I would like chicken and dumplings too with homegrown green beans and chunks of freshly baked cornbread. Would I have to tip?

I was just reading about the approach of Hurricane Milton.Fingers crossed that it stays way to the east of you.

    1. No tip from you, Sir. Your money is no good here in Lloyd! I think you've picked a fine menu.
It looks like Milton is going to stay south and east of here but oh, how I weep for those in its path. This is going to be bad.

  6. Well I make some pretty good chicken and dumplings myself so I guess I would request fish and more fish. Whatever kind you have available. Carol

I think I might make you snapper flakes au gratin as well as some pecan encrusted grouper. How does that sound? I used to make my first husband a pound cake for his birthday every year. That was his favorite. So yes, I can do that.
I'm so worried about the people south of here. This is going to quite possibly be horrendous.

  10. Hubby and I worked for a few hours this afternoon in the garden. We're cutting down a diseased tree that is much larger than it looks from a distance. He cuts, I burn, but I don't have a lovely big burn pile, just a small metal fire pit. We're both beat tonight.
I wonder what happened to Jack. It would haunt me for quite awhile. I can imagine Vergil building a travois to haul that generator up the mountain. I wonder how the damage of the hurricane will affect the election outcome. I can't imagine people voting when their homes and lives are torn apart.

    1. That sounds like a lot of work to me! You can't burn an entire large tree in a small metal fire pit! And if you can, I am amazed.
I don't know that I am haunted by Jack's death but certainly I am saddened and will be for a very long time. He was a dear boy.
They got the generator up by tractor!
Have you seen the conspiracy theories about how "they" are controlling the weather so that these storms only hit red states?

    2. Hey, there are Albertans who believe that the vapor trails from airplanes are chemtrails and some of them believe that the American government is responsible. What the fucking fuck.

I'm glad Vergil and his family got the generator up the mountain, and that he's there for them. I'm trying to avoid the news but it's hard, what with trump being so stupid and all.

  17. Okra, not breaded and deep fried just saute with its beautiful slimy self (olive oil and butter). You can throw in tomatoes and peppers and garlic if you want or whatever else suites your fancy but plenty of okra. I just can't get it up here in the north east and it just doesn't do well in my gardens. If it shows up occasionally it a market it will have come a long way, wont be fresh and probably picked too long.

  25. So glad Maurice is at least more content even if she isn’t any less violent. I’d eat anything you’d serve. So whatever you feel like making. I wondered how you coped with mosquitoes. I used to be covered with Deep Woods OFF when we lived in Connecticut to the point that when I hauled a bag of top soil on my shoulder, the ink would transfer to my skin. I’m sure that wasn’t healthy.

    1. We worry about the affects of DEET and the sprays that contain it too but damn- what are you going to do? It's either spray or don't go outside. I just read an article by Anthony Fauci who said he is just recovering from the worst sickness he's ever had which he got from a mosquito in his back yard. The damn things are not just a nuisance.
I will have to ponder upon what I would make you and Jerry. Not roasted potatoes, I can assure you! No way I'm competing with the ones you get at Elena's house.

    2. Anything you make would be loved by us! I, too, read about Fauci, and I got a bit paranoid about those tiger mosquitoes. SG did see one here when I was in hospital in May (in the hospital lobby!!!).

  26. Well, now all I can think of is chicken and dumplings! I used to buy a canned version by Sweet Sue that I loved. And I'm sure yours are much, much better.

Bravo on all the yardwork. I think I've suggested this before, and apologies if I'm repeating myself, but you may be able to sell that sago palm if you trust a landscaper to come and remove it. I think grown ones can be valuable.

  28. I would love some shrimp salad, or then maybe chicken and dumplings, although I am relatively certain, based on your upbringing and tradition, said dumplings would be those funny flat noodle things. I have made chicken and dumplings forever but being a Michigander, my dumplings are like little biscuit dough lumps dropped onto the boiling chicken broth mixture and steamed. No one has ever complained.

I've been working in the yard too. still getting hot an sweaty but no mosquitoes and not humid as we are in a long dry period. I've done all the tree work I can do so now can turn my attention to the overgrown flower beds.

Like you, I've been working in the garden. Closing things down for the winter means cutting back and raking over everything. My burning pile is getting big too.

For my dinner at your house I would love some of that red snapper the Mister caught, with garden tomatoes and lettuce, baby potatoes and angel biscuits. May's favorite apple cake with caramel frosting for dessert. Then I'd want you to let me make dinner the next night. We'd have mustard, tarragon chicken breasts, roasted potatoes and carrots, salad of gem lettuce with avocado, grapefruit and my secret dressing. Black bottom pie for dessert.
