This morning when I made the bed, I took the duckling off and replaced it with the real duck which has spent the summer in a closet, rolled tight and stored in a plastic bag. It is supposed to get down to fifty degrees tonight, forty-three tomorrow night. For many of us here, this is frigid weather, barely tolerable, but when it comes to bedtime, I leave the window open at least four or five inches, and then snuggle down deep in the cotton and down and I am as happy as I can be.
And yes, the fan will be on too.
After speaking so harshly about Maurice in yesterday's post, she did indeed come and sleep with me. However, she decided not to bother me until 3:00 a.m. at which time she jumped on the bed, then jumped on me and walked back and forth across my body a few times.
I suppose she wanted to alert me to the fact that she was there but then, before she settled down, she went into puke mode.
Maurice rarely, if ever, pukes. Jack vomited all the time but not Maurice. So I was a bit shocked. She had the excellent manners to only cough up a tiny blade of grass on the bed before jumping off and finding places in the laundry room and dining room to continue her purging.
Sigh.
And then she settled back on the bed and we went to sleep and all was well. She was still there when I woke up this morning. When I got out of bed she looked at me with sleepy slitted cat eyes as if to ask, "Must we? Really?" but she jumped off and followed me to the kitchen.
So she is back in my good graces. Mostly.
I swear, here it is Wednesday and I have done so very little with my time alone! I've gotten nothing done I had planned to do when Mr. Moon was gone. And he'll be back on Sunday!
Today was taken up by meeting Lily and Jessie and Lauren in town where we went to the fancy kitchen store and I got a bench scraper and some new biscuit cutters. I've never had a bench scraper and I definitely think I need one. Now, as to biscuit cutters, I generally use a glass but the one I always use broke, I guess. I can't find it. It was an old wine glass. I liked it because it was the right size and, being a wine glass, was thin enough on the edges to make a nice biscuit. But now I have an entire set of them of various sizes and I am pretty excited about that.
I really need to get a life, don't I?
Then the four of us had lunch and we laughed so hard. Boud always tells us what was discussed at her knitting group and I enjoy that so I'll give you a little bit of what we discussed over lunch. Children of all ages and stages, feeling guilty because as mothers that's what we do, misgendering people, people who post on FB about their sexual proclivities (S&M in this particular case) which really should have trigger warnings on them, why I find Beyond Meat to be scary (I know it's really not but that's how I feel), and other sundry things that I can't remember but we sure did find a lot of them to be hilarious.
Then Lauren had to go to work and Lily and Jessie and I met Rachel at a nail place and we got our toenails done.
I laughed about Maurice's 3AM activities. I go through the same thing nightly with Eddie. He 'dive bombs' me on the bed. Scares the shit out of me. Then stomps all over me and then starts kneading on my abdomen.
ReplyDeleteDear God....a Rottweiler was so much easier. His shenanigans usually begin around 4-5AM. I've also had the puke in the bed (on the pillow). Ahhh pets. Your dinner sounded delish. Being a vegetarian, that really struck a chord. Your flowers are beautiful. Oh, the nail polish is great. Love the name.
Paranormal John
I always think it's so odd how cats are generally very delicate about their toilet habits, usually making sure to only pee or poop where they are supposed to and yet, vomit just goes anywhere. I guess it's a completely different thing. As it is for us, but we seem to feel the need to deposit the vomit somewhere a bit more appropriate than a human's pillow.
DeleteI am envious of your toenails. My nails are hideous and thick and gross and awful - I could never get them painted so that is all I want.
ReplyDeleteUnless I am around when a cat pukes I only know it's happened if there is a stain on the carpet. We have dogs. Say no more. Ditto cat poo in the kitty litter. I thought our cats were constipated ....
This comment has turned as gross as my toenails. Sorry.
Dogs will literally eat shit. This bothers me about them although I realize it's a trait which has evolved for some nutritional reason. I guess.
DeleteMy toenails are probably still okay because I've spent my life barefoot or wearing flipflops.
It's funny how the day just flies by. I did very little today too. Had a fight with Jack about going to daycare, walked the dogs, had a little cry, made some stew and got a haircut.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to plant even more zinnias next summer. I just love them so much.
That supper looks very yummy. How was it? My daughter has a recipe with tofu that I want to try but I don't think I've ever cooked with tofu. My husband may faint.
No one can rationalize like a five-year old. Not a good way to start the day. I'm sorry.
DeleteBut I'm glad you're going to plant more zinnias next year. Was I the one who converted you?
Tofu can be very good but it needs to be cooked by someone who knows what they're doing or at least has a good recipe.
I pick my last zinnias too today, since we’re expecting a real frost tonight.. I’m going to miss them so much! Yours are so pretty, especially the red and white one- I’ve never seen those! I’ll spend some time searching for seeds online this winteršSounds like you had a lovely day, and I’m glad Maurice is back! Xo, Rigmor
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever grown the variegated ones myself but I am going to plant a bunch of them next summer.
DeleteStay warm, Rigmor!
Do you save seed from your zinnias?
ReplyDeleteNo. I'm lazy and just buy new ones. Also, the seeds from the plants I've grown often seem not to grow true but always end up being lavender.
DeleteThat sounds like a good day to me. And the food's good. By the time you're done it will be different!
ReplyDeleteYou know me so well.
DeleteAnd I join you and Rigmor in picking our last zinnias today, pending a real frost tomorrow. Cold temperatures all over the place!
ReplyDeleteAny day with a good laugh is a good day, in my book. Your day (and the upcoming dinner) sounds awfully nice.
Chris from Boise
Wow. It really was a pick-your-last-zinnias day for some of us. So funny.
DeleteAnd you are right- any day with a good laugh is a good day.
Hmmm, I can feel a Thai moment coming on again now. I've got everything to make yesterday's shrimp dish AND I have tofu in the fridge that needs using up. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome!
DeleteYou are putting your duck on your bed and I'm about to take mine off, the nights here have been so warm lately, though tonight is cold and raint with thunder so the duck gets a reprieve for now. I still love your zinnias, and seedlings are so hard to get here, I bought a packet of seeds instead and they actually germinated, got to be about an inch high and the next morning there was nothing left of them. Even the foliage on my new marigold seedlings was eaten off, they are just flowers sitting on bare stems now and looking sad. And that was my final effort at growing flowers. I love your nail colour.
ReplyDeleteAh yes- the curiousness of living in different parts of the world. It is odd, isn't it?
DeleteI only ever buy zinnia seeds. I am so sorry that something ate all your flowers' leaves. Do you know what it was?
slugs, snails, earwigs and whatever else is out there crawling around, rats and possums too, though the possums are more likely to eat the whole flower not just the leaves.
Delete43F would be frigid for us, too. Buy apparently we’ll hit that in January in Córdoba. Get out the goose down! Maurice sounds a bit like my mother. Don’t let your guard down! I had to look up bench scraper. I had no idea that was what they were called. In all my supposed enlightenment, I don’t really care to know when someone is into S&M. But I suppose it’s just another part of their lives... I suppose! Beautiful toes. Beautiful flowers. And that tofu sounds delicious.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry that you had a mother who was anything like Maurice. She's sort of okay as a pet but I sure wouldn't want her as a mother.
DeleteOkay. S&M. I understand that it's a way of life for some people and I get some of the reasons and I have no problems with that at all but isn't part of the allure of all kinks is that they are so often on the DL?
I have to say I am not proud of myself for my attitude towards this subject.
It's so funny that you bought a bench scraper. Dave just ordered one, too. It came the other day and I thought, "Now WHY would anyone need this?" But I'm not a cook!
ReplyDeleteInteresting that the zinnias are shrinking. My dahlias are getting more pale but the flower size, so far, is the same. (At least on the plants that haven't already died back.)
I wonder if Maurice climbed on you because she was thinking, "HELP! I'M GOING TO BE SICK!"
Boud told me recently that I really did need a bench scraper. So I bought one!
DeleteI literally laughed out loud when I read your last paragraph. Then I reread it and laughed again. Thanks for that.
I am not much into flowers but I must say that your zinnias look lovely. Seeing their colours and their shapes could possibly be a reason for believing in a God but I have not seen any corroborating evidence so I will stick with my original position - No God, Just Us!
ReplyDeletePeople point to all sorts of things as proof of a god. But the things is, either we have evolved to think that certain things are beautiful or awe-inspiring, and we have also had a hand in breeding flowers that are so very cool. Plus other stuff. You know.
DeleteWell, I had to Google "bench scraper" as I had no idea what that was. You can tell I am not a bread baker!
ReplyDeleteYou had a day out with some of your girls and that is a successful day! Sounds like such fun, Mary!
I do love being with my kids.
DeleteLike you, my warmer blankets are on the bed. Nights are cold but the day brings pleasant warmth at least for a little while longer.
ReplyDeleteYour zinnias are so rewarding. The plants keep producing and your flower arrangements are lovely.
Lunching with your girls always sounds like so much fun.
The weather we've had for the past 24 hours has been perfect. And it will last about 24 hours too. Something'll get wonky.
DeleteI love bringing flowers in and putting them in vases where I will see them throughout the day. They make me happy.
Yep. Hard to beat lunch with my girlies.
I love all those flower colors. I am not a waitress was a favorite too until I figured I could not pay for polish that +++++l
ReplyDeleteas
I love all the colors of those blooms. It sounds like you had a nice day!
Speaking of animals throwing up...sometimes Poppy will start to retch (there's no telling what stuff she eats outside, it's no wonder she gets sick occasionally) and she run around the house looking desperately for a rug to puke on! We made sure to buy a house with no carpet just so pet messes won't be hard to clean...and then she insists on puking onto throw rugs! Crazy.
ReplyDeletei've broken and/or dislocated all of my toes except ONE. you don't want to even think what my feet look like.... xxalainaxx
