These Are The Times That Try My Soul

This picture came up in my iPhone photos memory yesterday and I had to send it to Jessie. That is little Levon when he was probably still in his fa-fa stage. Remember his fa-fa? That's what he called a shovel and he carried his plastic fa-fa with him everywhere like some children would carry a blanket or a stuffed animal.

Isn't he a beautiful child? He looks so much like his mother at that age in this picture. She, too, was a little sprite, a tiny thing. I carried her in a side sling until she was at least two.

The thing I remember most about that day is that as tiny as he was, he INSISTED on pushing that child-cart around the nursery we were in and by god, the kid knew what he was doing. He didn't run into a thing or tump it over or hit anyone with it. He just drove it around as if he'd been doing the grocery shopping for thirty or forty years. I remember what he's wearing there too. The sort of tunic-top he has on is one of the dresses I made for August when he got so sad about me making dresses for Maggie and not for him. He loved his dresses. And Levon had no problem with them either. My darling boys. All of them. And my darling grandgirl, Maggie.

I met Jessie for lunch today. We went to Japanica! which had signs up informing us that they're about to close for renovations and will hopefully reopen in early 2025 under a new name and with new menu options but with the same beloved crew.
Hmmmmm...
The place has been looking a bit dowdy lately and the number of customers seems to have dropped drastically. But I tell you- I could not love their green curry tofu Bento box lunch any more than I do. I never get tired of it and will miss it when they're closed for renovations and I hope that "closed for renovations" isn't code for "you ain't never eating here no more."

We went to Costco but neither of us needed much. We were in and out of there in less than twenty minutes which is sort of a record. It takes at least five minutes just to walk from the produce section to the cleaning products section. As we made our way through the store where shelves were piled wide and high with goods, and refrigerator cases were stocked with meat and cheese and fish and all the foods in the world you might want, I thought about how people are standing in line for hours and hours to get into a grocery store to buy whatever they can that's edible, I suppose. I felt at once guilty and grateful and overwhelmed and offended and amazed at what we take for granted until one thing happens- one thing- and our whole world stands on its head and everything we took for granted is gone.

Vergil's family seems to be doing well. They can get up and down the mountain now although I think it's pretty perilous and it is a long hike. Of course even the youngest child in the family probably has more lung capacity and stronger legs than all of us Florida people put together excluding Vergil himself, and possibly Jessie, August, and Levon. Vergil has figured out how to get a generator up there so they can pump water which is the first concern. It turns out that Jessie and Vergil's RV that they keep parked there for their summer stays is bizarrely seemingly untouched and the generator could be put there to pump water from their well and take hot showers with the generator powered hot-water heater. I have still been obsessively watching videos from the affected areas and they are heartbreaking.

Of course Trump is using the grief and loss and tragedy for campaign purposes, claiming that the federal government is doing nothing to help the areas hit so hard and that Biden isn't even responding to calls from governors. He was in Valdosta, Georgia, which is right up the road from here, to deliver these lies. The governor there immediately responded saying that this was not true at all, he'd been in touch with Joe Biden who was doing everything he could to get help to those who need it. And that is a Republican governor.

I think this picture says it all.

He's making a SPEECH at a PODIUM behind a...what is that fake wall thing? A symbol of rebuilding? A replica of the wall he's going to continue building on the border with Mexico if he's re-elected? The strength of his campaign?

Dear god let it stop.

I'm going to watch the debate tonight with Tim Walz and JD Vance. As I told Glen, I need to have a scale to base my hatred of Vance on.

That's all for tonight except that I did buy a new broom today which is pretty exciting.

Actually no. No it is not. Not even with the beautiful red dustpan it came with. Even I am not that old.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Oh I am glad to hear things are looking up for the mountain family, even if only a little bit.

  2. Friend Mary will be here to watch the verbal trouncing of Vance by Walz ... I can hardly wait!
The devastation along the East Coast and then the bombing in Israel today ... has made me sick to my stomach!
Give beautiful Maurice a pat on the head for me!!

  3. I’m going to be watching the debate too. And what a darling child Levon is. I remember those boys wearing dresses. I adored their individuality and independence in their self presentation choices. You are a beautiful family.

  4. Good news about Vergil's family. Trump has no bottom, lying his ass off about Kemp not being able to reach Biden, Biden called Kemp for God's sake. And that brick wall he was behind in Valdosta, that a**hole had people take bricks from the building that was behind him and build him a "podium" so he could stand behind it and mumble some insane garbage and make it all about himself. Same shit, different day!

    1. Trump is the bottom of the bottom and his bottom is below the bottom of the bottom. That makes no sense. But he's the bottomest thing there is. He has nothing but lies. And that brick thing should have even his staunchest defenders shaking their heads and saying, "What the hell?" But they'll eat it up.

    1. I watched a good part of it then went to bed.
Oh, I loved that fa-fa! He's so sophisticated now, knowing all the real words and everything.

  6. Thanks for the update on the mountain family! A friend here has a son in Brevard. He just walked the Appalachian Trail, GA to ME. Says it was training for this.

  7. Thank goodness Vergil's family is ok and making things work on the mountain. Having a generator will help tremendously.
I look forward to the day when we hear nothing from DT. At this point, I do not believe anything he has to say.

    1. A generator can make a lot of difference.
As to DT: a friend of mine used to say- You know what liars do? They lie.
      Yep.

  8. Oh god, I'm getting ready to watch the debate. Today, one of my students actually mentioned that Biden was sending money to Ukraine and not to North Carolina, and I just about screamed at him before I composed myself and let him know the Truth.

    1. Oh yeah. That's a big one.
People will believe anything. Any damn thing in the world that agrees with their viewpoint.

  9. And I've been thinking about Vergil's family non-stop and am relieved to hear that they've been able to get a generator, etc. I understand how horrific it is but also how the people there are bonding together to help one another and that's a beautiful thing.

    1. They'll be getting a generator on Sunday. Vergil's taking one up there then.
It is sort of amazing to see how people can come together in such a huge crisis.

  10. I thought that Walz did a good job. He stuck to it, didn't he?

I'm glad that things are sorting out for Vergil's family. I may have missed it...he's up there now?

Your broom and my broom are the same broom! I broke the dust pan however, and replaced it with a lovely bright blue one.

Something about Maurice that occurred to me today...do you suppose he bore witness to what happened to Jack? And that maybe he's sticking close to you, because he knows that he's safe when he's around people?

    1. Walz did stick to it. You could tell that debate is not within his natural skill set but I think he did a good job.
Vergil is going up on Sunday.
That red dustpan is a nice color of red but the way it's designed so you can step on it puts me off a little but hell- I may need that feature soon.
I don't think that Maurice saw what happened to Jack. It was raining that night and neither one of those cats like(d) rain at all. I think she's just feeling more trust right now.

  11. I'm so glad Vergil's family are ok, but you're absolutely right. How things can change in an instant!

  12. The new red broom and dustpan are very exciting! And I’m not THAT old either. You have such an exceptional family. And beautiful. Much better news about Vergil’s family. Just got out of bed and I haven’t yet watched the debate or read anything about it. Give me strength.

    1. I didn't watch the whole debate but I hear the part I missed, which was the end, was where Walz did his best work.
Thank you for the sweet words about my family. We may be more "quirky" than exceptional but hey- what's the difference?

  13. I recognised Baby Levon right away, though I'd never seen that picture before. Hooray for the RV and generator. It will be a big help to have water and showers.
Is Trump unable to give a speech without a podium and a wall? That looks so nuts I just had to laugh at him. Were there any spectators at all?

  14. I've been thinking about Vergil's family a lot too and I'm glad to hear that they are doing okay.
The one death that's been bothering me the most is the mother and her one month old twins that died, they're in my brain and don't want to leave.

    1. Yes. That particular tragedy with the mother and her infant twins is just too much to bear.

  15. Glad to hear that Virgil's family is all right and making things work. They sound so resourceful!
I tried to watch a little of the debate but I didn't want to get riled up before my bedtime and so had to turn it off after too many J.D. lies. Glad to hear that Walz did well.
I voted yesterday which I am bragging about to everyone this morning. Go, Harris/Walz! Go, Blue!

      Good for you for voting!!!!

  16. What a relief to learn that Vergil's family are safe and that they can now move on. As soon as I saw Orange U Tan standing behind that makeshift wall I thought of the southern border and his crazy claims. So little of the wall has been built and Mexico has not paid a penny. He didn't even start on the northern wall to keep out those smartass Canadians.

    1. They're safe but still firmly in the pioneer days only without mules.
I'll never forget being in Mexico soon after DT was elected and a restaurant there had a tip jar that said, "Trump's Wall Funds." Mexicans have a very fine sense of humor in my experience.

  17. I'm glad Virgil's family is faring well. half my new post up today was going to be Trump's bullshit lies and heinous remarks but i just couldn't do it, didn't want to pollute my visit with the ggd. it'll go up next. late as usual and after the fact but fuck it.
