Never A Dull Moment. At Least For Me

I got up an hour earlier than I usually do in order to get Jack to the vet on time. Now let me ask you something- do you recognize this pattern of behaviors in you relationship? In my marriage, I'm the one who's always trying to make sure that my husband and I get to places on time. I hate being late. Mr. Moon was up before I was this morning so there was no problem there but I (the worrier) was already making time frames for our leaving, ensuring that we'd have time to get Jack in the carrier and all of us in the car and to Monticello for our 9:15 appointment.
"We have to leave about 8:50," I said.
"8:57," he replied.
Okay, okay.
So by 8:45 I was ready to go, having had my cheese toast, and was dressed and had the carrier all set with a towel and a blanket in it and MR. MOON HAD NOT YET EATEN HIS BREAKFAST!
"Look," he said, "I've been dealing with things on the phone."
And he had. Things like alerting streaming platforms that his credit card information had changed. Okay, yes, that's important but was now really the time for that?
It takes him at least fifteen minutes to fix and eat his ginormous bowl of cheerios and fruit every morning. He has a certain way he likes the cereal and the fruit to go into the bowl, thus ensuring evenly dispersed bananas or blueberries. And then the actual consuming of the cereal takes awhile too. Knowing all of this, I was beginning to get agitated.
"It's okay," he said. "It's not like we're going to miss the beginning of a show."
So into the kitchen he went and he helped me get Jack in the carrier which Jack did NOT like at all and then he ate his breakfast and had to fix his water and his coffee to take with him and finally, we drove to Monticello.
And we really were not that late. And they really don't care much there. As I've said, they're country vets. The vet we saw today spent at least five minutes discussing tractors with another pet-owner. He's a laconic guy who was wearing jeans and true, real work boots with laces. The kind of work boot that you could wear to operate a tractor or deliver a foal. He listened to our description of Jack's behavior and recent weight loss and increasing appetite and thirst. He examined Jack and said that it could be thyroid and he discussed some of the treatments for that, or that it could be diabetes, and he discussed some of the treatments for that, and he said it could also be kidneys or really, a lot of other things.
I'm starting to lean more towards diabetes because Jack is not displaying the hyper activity that a hyperactive thyroid usually causes. I really hope it's not because we'd have to give him insulin twice a day and I'm just not sure that's something we would do to extend his life, as cruel as that sounds.
We asked him if he could give us an estimate as to his age and he said it was hard to tell with cats but that he would say somewhere in the mid-teens. So, like 13-15 or so? Which is not a young cat.
They drew blood and we'll get the results on Monday.
We bought flea treatment for both Jack and Maurice and came on home. Jack was so glad to be back here but I have to say that he was a very gentle and well-behaved boy in the office. Even the vet noted that and thanked him for not biting him when he examined Jack's teeth.
So that is all the speculation I am going to be doing until we know what's going on. My mind wants to figure all of this out right now, but that's just impossible.

I've stayed busy today, hanging sheets outside and spending another hour in this wicked hot heat picking green beans. I got another gallon and a half or so. Here's what our weather forecast looks like for the next week.

I can only tolerate so much of that before I have to come back inside. It's the sort of heat that literally makes me feel like a hunk of meat roasting in an oven. If you're walking across a parking lot, the heat feels like an evil entity, something beyond what is humanly tolerable although I know it is worse in some places.

We got a beautiful little thunderstorm with rain last night. I doubt we even got a quarter of an inch but oh! While it was happening, I had to sit on the front porch to listen to the wind chimes, to smell the petrichor, which is a word I didn't even know until recently, to watch the trees' branches dance a little in the joy of it. Things did cool off for a bit and everything green is greener still for that sweet hit of water, but it's even hotter today.

Mr. Moon is on his way back to the coast to hopefully fish tomorrow and Sunday. It's going to be so hot on the water. Yes, of course they can get IN the water, but in my experience, that is not something that fishermen really do. Perhaps it's due to the fact that they know how many sharks are in that water or perhaps it's just not...done. Perhaps they don't want to scare the fish they're trying to catch away?
I don't know.
I do know he won't starve out there because I made the cookies for him to take that he loves so much. I think that he often forgets to eat when he's fishing until he realizes that his stomach is completely empty but if he has a bag full of oatmeal, raisin, chocolate chip cookies, he's more apt to remember.

I've made the bed up with the clean sheets. I've done some mending.
So it's been a good day. Besides the beans, I also picked three nice, shiny Italian eggplants that I am going to make into a sort of rustic eggplant parmesan. Well, maybe they are not Italian eggplants although that's what I thought they were called. I've just googled the situation and they may be Indian eggplants or...fairy tale eggplants? What would you call them?

Whatever variety they may be, I much prefer the English word for eggplant which is aubergine, the very sound of which makes me feel a little swoony. "Eggplant" is so prosaic but "aubergine" is absolutely romantic and sounds like the title of an Edith Piaf song to me.

Whatever we call it, I am going to cook it and eat it tonight. And I am going to be glad of it.

I hope that Jack wants to sleep with me tonight because I want so badly to pet and love on him for as long as he'd like before we both fall asleep.
He is such a very good boy.

Happy Friday, y'all.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Well, I came here to see how the vet appointment went. I am glad that you were not all that late. It will be very interesting to hear what the vet has to say.

I do love a good thunderstorm myself. The wind and the wildness of it, the flash of lightning and the clap of thunder. My very favorite place to be is in bed, tucked up snuggly listening to it.

    1. Being in a snuggly bed when the heavens open up is lovely but my favorite place is the porch where I can smell it, feel it, watch it, and at the same time, see how the storm is affecting the trees and plants. I am greedy. I want all of it.

  2. I do hope Jack's diagnosis isn't diabetes. A thyroid pill every day is easy, but insulin shots are not. We had a diabetic cat once, and she was quite young when diagnosed. And you're right, we did not improve the quality of her remaining life. She was the mean cat among our several, and fixing her diabetes did not improve her temper.
I mended recently. I resewed the sleeve hem of a thirty year old nightgown. I bought it before 1990, so I guess it's more than thirty years old.

    1. Joanne, I have clothes that are over thirty years old too. The mending I did yesterday was also on a nightgown!
Thank you for sharing your experience with a diabetic cat.

  3. Have thought of you and Jack all day. of the 3 *possibles* diabetes would be the most challenging to manage.....but results will tell, and hope it may be (if it has to be) one of the other two possibilities.

    1. Thank you for thinking of our Jack. If good wishes were health, he would live forever and I appreciate that.

  4. I understand your need to plan and be on time because I am the same. I'm never late and actually usually early for any appointment. It sounds like Jack was very good with the Vet. I am also hoping for an easy fix for Jack. Your eggplant looks perfect. Eggplant parm sounds delicious.

    1. I think that people who are generally anxious are the people who feel the need to be on time or even early to appointments.
      My parm was excellent!

  5. When I had the petcare service I had a lot of elderly clients on insulin and I got very good at doing the shots, which only go under the skin, not right in. Not a single cat ever objected. So there's that. Owners knew I'd show up faithfully, on time, so their friends would be kept stable. The cats went on having a nice old age.

  6. Jack is at an age where sometimes the best thing is lots of cuddles and special food for a shorter time rather than ongoing meds for a longer time. I wish we could treat humans with the same love and respect.
I hope Mr Moon caught lots of fish and enjoyed his cookies.

I think you have a very valid point about Jack. Thank you.

  7. Aubergine is French and I don't care what they call them as long as I DON'T have to eat them. I'm glad Jack was well behaved at the vet, Lola is more tolerant than she used to be, when I adopted her she was afraid of everything, barely coming near me even for the first couple of years. I will say that if she develops anything that needs long term/lifelong medication I won't be prolonging her life that way. I simply can't afford it.
I also hate to be late anywhere for anything. Something I got from my mother "because time is important and you should waste other people's time". The downside to that is whenever I am somewhere away from home I'm watching the clock to be sure I don't waste people's time by missing the home going bus.

    1. Some people will do anything they possibly can to prolong a pet's life. Frankly, I don't even want MY life prolonged if it's not a good life at that point. Like I said, I really need to just wait and see what we're dealing with and do the research and listen to the vet.
As to the time-is-money thing, I get that. Time IS important and I am not happy when I have to wait for an unreasonable amount of time for someone to show up or for an appointment. It seems disrespectful to me.

  8. "shouldn't" waste...not 'should'

  9. Injections twice a day- easier with a dog but cats , they act incredibly insulted. We had one, Injections were a bit of torture for her. The disease was also a bit gruesome, diabetes is a bitch. She died in the neighbors yard, under a bush while I was out of the country. I am so sorry about Jack- you may have better luck with him . AND there is Boud's experience which is lovely and probably more normal.

    1. I suppose every cat reacts to having a disease differently, just as humans do. I appreciate your perspective based on experience.

  10. I'm glad Jack behaved. Animals know when they are loved and looked after and while neither possible scenario is great, he trusts you which will make caring for him easier.

  11. My ex-husband was always the one wasting time when we had to be somewhere and then running around like a headless chicken yelling at everyone that we'd be late. One time we were leaving in our camper to go fishing for the weekend at a local park. He was yelling at everyone to get a move on (I had myself and the kids ready and had loaded the camper) and we were half way there when he realized he'd still got his slippers on so we had to turn round and go back. Oh, and as exotic as it sounds, I'm pretty sure Piaf never sang about aubergines!

Yeah. Edith probably never did sing about aubergines.

  12. One of our cats is diabetic and has to be jabbed twice a day. I jab him while he's eating, so he doesn't really notice. Strange, that - I'm sure I'd be aware if someone stuck a needle in me at any time!

  13. I am the one who says ( several times) what time we need to go out and I am always the one standing in the hall ready to go while he is upstairs getting ready! Hope that Jack will be OK.
Our vet has a notice saying that if you are late for an appointment you may not be seen at all!!

    1. There seems to be a hurrier and a non-hurrier in each relationship. I guess that's a good thing. Maybe?
This vet isn't like that. It's an extremely laid-back vibe there.

  14. Here, eggplant is berenjena. Also a nicer sounding name. Whatever you call yours, they’re beauties. We are both usually early (much too early) for everything but we take our turns running late and making the other one nervous. So glad Jack was cooperative at the vet. Here, both cats are a nightmare to get into their travel cages. But once at the vet, Moose is an angel; Dudo is not.

    1. Oh! I like "berenjena".
Jack has been put into a carrier so few times that he didn't really get it together to fight me on it yesterday. Next time, I fear he definitely will. I felt so bad for him. He cries like a child in that thing and then he pants. He is terrified.

  15. Our cat got diabetes when he was 13 and lived on twice a day insulin (and testing) for 6 more years. He didn't mind the poking much and they were mostly very good years. Some 'sugar-cats' are hard to stabilize though and even ours had times when he didn't eat well which threw his blood sugars off and caused the dreaded 'fatty liver syndrome' which takes force-feeding to get them through. It sure is a commitment and finding someone to take care of them when you go on a vacation is another problem. FelineDiabetes.com has tons of great info!

  16. We grow aubergines but I love the Italian word, melanzana which sounds even more delicious with parmigiano. I could sing that line. And your harvest looks gorgeous!

I admit that punctuality is in my DNA and I married an Irish man who like most people in his home country - no offence - believes being late is a charming personal character trait. And being late as in always and no matter for what. I have seen this man run for a bus/appointment etc. only once and that was with a sick child in his arms. He has never missed a flight, train, date whatever. Meanwhile, I could be close to a hart attack.

    1. Oh my gosh. Yes. Put those two Italian words together and you have a romance novel!
Glen is the type of guy who, when they announce they are about to board a plane will say, "I think I'll go find a bathroom before we leave." It makes me insane.

  17. Sorry about Jack. We've had several cats that ended up with diabetes (how is that even possible? Our vet says shitty dry food, and all dry food is shitty, no matter the quality, wet food is best) and had them on insulin. It was hell for them, and for us. Eat, wait 30 mins, give the shot, pray it's not too much, or too little. Try to test their blood sugar with a unit like humans use, prick their ears, it was torture for them. Made them afraid of us, and their daily life miserable. Sigh. It's hard to figure it all out. Sorry I sound so negative, just wanted to give you one perspective of it. I am sure there are others whose experiences were better than ours

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes, I do appreciate your perspective from your experience. I doubt that we would be up for regular testing. That does sound cruel. Not a happy thing for either you or your cats.

  18. Jack is not a young cat anymore. Bagheera is thirteen and I would not give her insulin, so you're not alone. Cats don't understand and it's part of the circle of life. His blood sugar would just continue to rise and he would end up with diabetic ketoacidosis, not sure how that would feel for him, but it would end in his death. We can't take Bagheera to the vet anymore, it's so awful for her that we would rather let her die of whatever than take her to the vet again. She sounded like a child screaming and crying last time I took her. Hubby said, never again.

  21. I am also a let's-leave-on-time-or-even-a-little-early person, while Dave walks out the door exactly at the last second to get wherever he needs to go exactly at the last second. It gives me agita every time.

I also have never heard the word "petrichor." That's a fun linguistic discovery!

I'm glad Jack was well-behaved at the vet. The fact that he was so mellow also seems to point away from hyperthyroid.

  23. The aubergines look Japanese to me. I think the fairy tale ones are smaller or at least the ones i had last year were. Thirteen is not really that old for a cat but things do wear out. I don't feed Meow Mix but my daughter does and all cats love it. I don't know why. It has to be terrible for them. It is primarily corn and cats are carnivores. Apparently they have no sense when it comes to their nutrition. I guess that Meow Mix is sprinkled with a flavor enhancer and, like we are, they are suckers for the taste.

    1. You are no doubt right about the Japanese eggplant/aubergines.
My cats were obviously born and raised by people who did not have a great deal of money or who really cared about pet nutrition. I have tried feeding them better food but they just don't eat it. My theory about Meow Mix is that it has some crack sprinkled in there.
