There's No Place Like Home

Maurice likes to help me with the distribution of the crows' mealworms most days. She follows me from stump to stump to supervise. The crows don't seem to be the least bit worried about her presence.
They've been acting a bit weird recently. As I said, only four of the five have been showing up while there has been at least one, if not more, who stays in the trees and yells something in Crow language that I certainly don't understand.
This morning, however, the fifth crow returned to eat with the others and I could hear another one in the tree above them. Now my story-telling brain is thinking that perhaps yes, the fifth crow did indeed find a mate and has been trying to teach and encourage that bird to join the others for the daily mealworms. If a sixth crow shows up, that may show the truth of my theory.
Or not. I am fond of a good theory and I have a million of them.
When Glen fed them on Wednesday because I was at pottery, he found another red berry-like object in the very center of a stump, just as I had found a few weeks ago. We have determined that it is indeed a seed from a magnolia cone, but one that has been aged a bit and has lost its shine and hard shell. Perhaps these more mature seeds are the ones that are good to eat and so they are gifting us with something special.
Who knows?
Certainly not me but I do feel fairly certain that both seeds were left purposefully. Now, as to what that purpose is- I have no idea.

Here's another thing I have no clue about as to why, but I found myself with another fairly long list of things we needed at Publix and Costco today. How this could possibly be true is a complete mystery. I think it's probably NOT true, it's just that I have a bit of a disorder when it comes to making sure I have all the things I need to make all the meals which is so funny because at this moment, I am completely out of ideas for meals.
Or so it seems.
Disorder or not, I did go to town where I met Glen for lunch. He was already there, having had errands to run. We met at the Cuban place. I have become a regular there. Today's server was the darling, smallest woman with the inordinately long and black eyelashes. I'm pretty sure they are not original equipment but are after-market accessories. Whatever. They are lovely and she has great skill in applying them.
Lunch was fine but getting to the restaurant almost did me in. The traffic in Tallahassee is becoming untenable. For me, at least.
Here I am, about to sound like a very old woman which is fine, because I am a pretty old woman, at least, but I can remember when that part of Tallahassee was nothing but a two-lane road through woods and pastures and now there are six lanes in some parts of it with businesses and office buildings lining both sides of the that road. Even getting into the little strip mall where the restaurant is can use up every bit of patience I have. Add to that the small-ish parking spaces and the absolutely obscene and insane size of the trucks so many of the urban cowboys around here drive and finding a parking place and then actually getting your car into it is far more stressful than it should be.
I know this is nothing at all compared to the situation in Atlanta or LA or even Tampa or Orlando or Jacksonville but my god, this is Tallahassee.
Whine, whine, whine, bitch, bitch, bitch.
Quit going to town so often, Mary!
Okay, OKAY.

But I did at least get to see Lily as I shopped at her Publix which is always a sweetness. She looked FABULOUS today. Even more fabulous than usual. She got her hair cut yesterday and then colored the front of it a sort of purplish-blue. I really love watching Lily interact with her customers. I know I've said this so many times but she's just such a very kind and respectful human being and I can tell that so many of the people she serves really appreciate her.
The Publix shopping wasn't so bad but Costco was absolutely packed. Costco is always absolutely packed. Or at least it is every time I go. I did not see Brenda.
Sigh.
In fact, I really didn't see but a few of the regular employees I generally see. So that was a disappointment. But hey- you know. I was there for Cheerios and cucumbers and coffee and raisins, not socialization.
Theoretically.
I honestly considered buying a Shark vacuum cleaner so you know I wasn't in my right mind. Suddenly, though, it seemed like a good idea. They were on sale. I have no functioning vacuum cleaner. This is because I hate vacuuming. I will sweep and dust mop but please don't make me vacuum. Of course vacuums have come a long way from the days when I hauled around my grandmother's Electrolux canister vacuum cleaner which the kids used to call The Dead Pig.
So maybe I would LOVE to vacuum now!
I doubt it.

And that's about it. Mr. Moon just came in from mowing and is taking a shower before he makes us martinis.
Tonight is extra-special because not only are the sheets clean, they are NEW! And these are really lovely sheets, bought from Garnet Hill, not Costco (although there's nothing wrong with Costco sheets) because Glen encouraged me to buy some just like a set of other Garnet Hill sheets that we've had for a very long time which are still quite luxurious.
I am excited. I tried to do a particularly good job making the bed up with them.

The color of the new sheets is supposed to be some sort of green and although I'm not excited about it, the color doesn't offend me. Besides, it's dark when we're in bed so it really doesn't matter.

So that's it. Here we are, all the way to another Friday. Still hot. Still dry. The forecast says once again that it will rain tomorrow which is what it always says. Promises, promises.
As always, we'll see. Whatever the weather I hope to be right here, watching the crows, being awed and amazed at the rapid growth of the arugula, watering my porch plants, and happy. Or at least content.

I feel incredibly fortunate tonight which is a fine way to feel.

Happy Friday, y'all.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. There is no purpose to the red seeds apart from being an exchange gift from the crows. You gift them mealworms, they gift you red seeds. I would like to see Lily's hair colour. Are your pillowcases gigantic or do you have really small pillows? Do not buy a vacuum cleaner, it will just gather dust and need cleaning.

    1. The pillowcases are gigantic. Pillowcases only seem to come in king-sized these days and I have yet to see a king-sized pillow except for perhaps that bottom one on the right which is Glen's cooling pillow. But also, three of my pillows are quite small, one of them barely thicker than the fabric that holds what used to be fluffy feathers.
I am sure you're right about a vacuum cleaner.

  2. I thought you had a vacuum cleaner, the Roomba? Is it still functioning?
Or is there any possibility of a cleaner, I wonder. Maybe hard to find where you live

    1. I was just going to say the same thing. Did Roomba run away?

    2. The Roomba is not working. Technical difficulties and I am ready to heave it out the door.
I suppose I could find a cleaner but I hate having someone here when I'm at home and can't always plan to be away when they're cleaning. If I had a team like yours, Boud, I would definitely be a happier woman.

  3. I “inherited” a Shark (years ago) and it was LOUD.

  4. I'm always impressed how you can make a regular going to Costco and Publix day sound like a great adventure! You sure are a good writer, Mary, and I enjoy your posts!

    1. Oh, Ellen. Thank you so much. You have no idea how much those words mean.

  5. Oh parking and those huge trucks! It's definitely off-putting for traveling around from place to place, everywhere! Vacuums promise you such a lovely home, but leave out the reality of running them. I think the whole idea of appliances to make homemakers have it easier is probably balderdash. Then again stoves and washing machines are certainly worthwhile! I take that back. Just vacuums!

    1. Yes. Vacuums...suck.
However, washing machines, stoves, refrigerators, even dishwashers are appreciated greatly by me.

  6. So cool about the crows. My magnolia is making seed pods but way too early for the red seeds. I need another set of sheets so I checked out the Garnet Hill website. Whoa. Way out of my budget. I'm sure they're worth it though.

We usually go to CostCo on a Wednesday when it's still busy but not terrible.

    1. This is only the second set of sheets I've ever bought from Garnet Hill and I plan to have them for the rest of my life. The ones I got were 25 percent off but still not cheap by any means.
I should try Costco on Wednesday. Oh wait. That's pottery day.

  7. Here it always seems to me that we have a sentinel crow who sits high up in a tree calling down to the others: 'Gees, here she comes, scatter!' Or: 'ignore that, it is just a cat'. They trade places from time to time so that they all get fed.

I wish the world was like that, all of watching out for each other and making sure everyone eats.

    1. I call that crow the Scout. Although that may be different from a sentinel crow as the scout does come down and inspect the stumps to see if I've yet put out the mealworms. But then he announces his findings from the tree.
The crows do seem to be very communal in their dining and don't display the same defensive behavior about the food that the other wild birds do.

  8. Being home is always great. Like you, I have no complaints
I share your experience with the roads. The traffic is heavy regardless of the time-of-day. Historically I could travel during non-peak (peak being: 7-9 AM and 3-5 PM) commuting hours and the roads were empty. Aggressive driving seems on the rise too.
Having your full crow family return is great. They know where a terrific meal is served.

    1. I will say that the drivers in Tallahassee, for the most part, seem to be very good about letting someone out of a side road or drive to enter traffic. I always take note of that and I try to do it too.
I was very glad to see all five crows again.

  9. We have a newish vacuums cleaner my husband selected, purchased and uses - maybe it appeals to the tinkering instinct since it collects debris in a special removable cup place and has several different brushes and so on?? Anyway, I have not even tried it and have not plans in that regard - don't want to upset whatever the current magic is! It does do things the robot vac can't, notably carpeted stairs and upholstery, both of which need it because of the dogs.

The crow saga is interesting - there was one around here for a while that would call to us from the porch railing and we would hustle out with peanuts. Now it doesn't come around, or at least doesn't call out, and we feel pretty bereft.

    Cheers,
    Ceci

    1. I wonder if I could somehow interest my husband in vacuuming? I'm sort of doubting it. Seems like they could do something to make that chore more appealing to men.
I know you must miss your crow friend.

  10. Are the sheets the Organic Cotton ones from Garnet Hill? They have several options but I am hesitant since they are so expensive.

  11. I totally get your concerns about traffic, noise and too much build up. Florida is over populated and much too hot. Enjoy your sheets!

    1. Florida is definitely way too overbuilt and over populated. You're right. As to the heat? I am so tired of it right now.

  12. I don’t know why I hate vacuuming, too. SG hates being home when the cleaning person is here. Perfectly normal for me, although our main one loves to talk and is quite hyper. Summer replacement is so calm and quiet, it’s a pleasure to have her here and she and I visit for about 10 minutes before she leaves. I haven’t been in a Costco for a very long time, but I remember them always being crowded and hectic (and fun). It sure sounds like the crows are exchanging gifts with you. Nice that they’re not bringing worms!
