Remember the boat Mr. Moon drove to Texas recently to buy? Well, up until today, he'd still not put it in the water so this morning he asked me if I'd like to go on a little boat ride down the St. Marks River with him, get a little lunch too.
Although that particular activity had not been on my bingo card for today and although I was still not in the best of moods, I said yes, I would. This was an important thing to him and I knew that.
St. Marks is not that far from here and we have made the drive many times. I packed some towels and extra clothes and he got the boat trailer hooked up to his Pathfinder, and off we went.
First things first though. I absolutely had to say a few things to him. To try and make him see, without him feeling threatened, that there were issues important to me that were not being dealt with and I needed his help in them. Mostly this is about this house. The house we live in. It needs a lot of work. For many reasons, that work has been put off and the problems mostly ignored although that's really not possible at this point.
He listened. He agreed. He is going to call a contractor on Monday.
And so my soul felt better. This is something we have discussed before but I think I needed to present my feelings to him in a slightly different way to make him understand how serious I am. And he did and as we drove through the planted pines and wild Florida swamp and over beautiful rivers, I think we were both eased and felt more at peace.
We stopped for lunch in St. Marks which is a fishing village, basically, that has become known for its marina on the river of the same name. There's a giant palapa restaurant on the water that I know I've discussed before and even posted pictures of.
We sat facing these signs.
We saw no alligators but they did not lie when it came to the birds. Grackles dove onto any french fry or lettuce leaf they could get their beaks on.
It is such a reasonable size and so much easier to handle than the very big boat he just sold.
We only went down the river for a short distance. It was hot but when we were moving at some speed, the air made it tolerable. Most of the little trip though, was done very slowly as many stretches of the river are posted to use idling speeds due to manatees. And that is a very good rule.
Here are two of the pictures I took.
We did not see much wildlife. We saw many new docks, built since we were last there. We saw a man backing his boat into the water on a ramp under a bridge and then the boat coming loose from its line and floating off. We stopped to help but he swam out to it and got it to shore. It wasn't a huge boat and it was aluminum so that helped.
All in all, it was a peaceful ride.
And I should have worn sun screen. I know it. I even brought some so no excuses.
I'll let you know tomorrow how well that theory holds up.
I'm glad you had a good day and made your feelings known. I wonder if the upset about the work at the cabin was about your own house not getting the attention? Especially since you love your house.
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt.
DeleteThat is a very happy man! I am glad you managed to explain your concerns about the house. Sometimes it takes a few goes to get the message across.
ReplyDeleteCan you please share the chicken recipe? All those ingredients are waaaay up on the top of my favourites list.
It does sometimes take a few goes and sometimes it never really does seem to sink in but for whatever reason I think he got it this time.
DeleteI will give the chicken recipe. It was very good.
What a pleasant outing you two had.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you just need to reconnect. 🤗
And sometimes you have to make a genuine effort for that to happen.
DeleteThe dance continues. I'm glad you made your needs known. It's not easy, well for me anyway. That would have stuck in my craw too, fixing up another house, but not the one you love.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, when we bought this house, Glen was very much opposed to it because of how much upkeep it would require. Time has proved him right. But I know he agreed for us to buy it because I loved it so much. I still do. So, not entirely a simple situation.
DeleteIf your theory proves correct, can you pass along that recipe? Glad you and the mister had a chance to talk. Mine cleaned up his pai t smears off my bathroom walls. I may be a bit particular about things, but there was no excuse for yesterday. He got a snoot full.
ReplyDeleteI will post the recipe. It was very good.
DeleteI'm glad you were able to make your point with YOUR husband.
Does the boat have some kind of "awning" or shade possibility? I know I couldn't sit out in that sun but maybe the breeze off the river makes is manageable. And I LOVE that restaurant, although the "it's there home too" sign bugged me too, just a little!
ReplyDeleteWell, Glen brought the beach umbrella to use as he'd found a way to make that work but it was quite cloudy when we started out so we just never put it up.
DeleteWhat a gorgeous butterfly! We currently have dozens of bees in the rosemary and on my Jade "hedge". I am very glad you and Mr Moon spent a day together, glad the boat is more manageable and glad thta he will be calling a contractor about the house. The picture you showed a while back of rotting wood has been haunting me.
ReplyDeleteOh, River. Don't let that picture haunt you. We will not let the house fall down around us.
DeleteI hope.
That sign would have made my teeth itch too! Shame you didn't have a black pen with you. To think that someone actually printed it.
ReplyDeleteI had the same thought about the sign maker.
DeleteReally?
Beautiful pics today including of Mr. Moon! I’m so glad you got things talked out. Nice when you have a partner you can talk through things with. I’d be tempted to take a red permanent marker to that their sign!
ReplyDeleteYes. The sign was disturbing. But whatever. You know. The place is built on oyster shells and that is Wakulla County which around here does have a certain reputation. If I was looking for funk the other day, I certainly know where I can always find it.
DeleteA boat ride does sound fun...and a dip in your favorite river. I've been around those rivers, but never floated on any of them. Loved the butterfly!
ReplyDeleteOh, it is so lovely to swim in the Wacissa or Wakulla. Springs. Have you been there, Barbara?
DeleteSee, now you just proved how perfect your relationship is.
ReplyDeleteThe sign would have bothered me too. It's one thing to submit wordage to make the sign, another for whoever made the sign to use the wrong spelling. I wonder how many times it gets pointed out to them?
I have not seen a single swallowtail this year. Hell, I haven't seen hardly any butterflies at all. A couple of fritillaries.
If there is anything perfect about our relationship, I think it's the way we know we want to be with each other. Except for when there's fishing, hunting, or log-cabin restoration to be done!
DeleteNo, seriously. We manage to work things out. You know how that goes.
Butterflies didn't even visit your phlox or zinnias? That is strange.
Those butterfly pictures are amazing. I'm glad you got out on the river, and also glad you and Mr. Moon had a talk. I think it was needed.
ReplyDeleteThat sign would have bugged me too!
Definitely needed.
DeleteI have discovered that the best way I can get decent pictures of butterflies is to just keep taking one picture after another. Hopefully, at least one will be decent.
Boating and enjoying the water and shore views makes a lovely day. Docking at a waterfront restaurant for a nice meal and I'd say that is perfection.
ReplyDeletePresenting your interest in renovations for the house in Lloyd and getting consensus is fabulous. Will you make a checklist for getting everything you want completed? I like a list and with each checkmark, I feel progress and great satisfaction.
Regarding the hot sun when boating, I can relate. I insisted on a dodger that can be brought up to provide shade and lowered when it is not needed.
Oh, I am sure there will be a checklist. Along with the estimate for the work. This ain't gonna be cheap.
DeleteI had to look up "dodger" as used in that context. I'd never heard that!
Glad you had a nice day together, Mary.
ReplyDeleteI love that photo of the butterfly - how gorgeous it is!
That butterfly is better than anything at the Louvre for my money. Well, really no way to compare such things but it is so beautiful.
DeleteThe only redeeming feature of that sign is - perhaps it was deliberate so people would pay more attention? I would require sunscreen, an overshirt, a scarf, a hat and a life jacket to even start to feel like putting foot onto a boat, but that is me. Isn't it wonderful that we are all different? Glad you got your talk heard.
ReplyDeleteNah. I like your sweetness at trying to defend the sign's purpose but trust me- they just did not know the difference.
DeleteI think because I've lived in Florida for most of my life, being out in the sun is just so normal that I don't protect myself the way I should. And as for the life jackets-we do require the kids to wear them when they're in a boat with us.
WOW- the butterfly shots are magnificent!
ReplyDeleteThe BUTTERFLY is magnificent!
DeleteWe had a favourite open-air breakfast restaurant in Maui where grackles would steal your food too. They were well-fed birds.
