Here's another picture from yesterday that Lily took and I just had to post it because it's so darn great.
I slept until nine this morning and I have no shame about it. None. And I am going to sleep good tonight, too. Gibson is here now, playing Wii games with his grandfather. They seem to be having a very fine time.
Oh wait. They've just left the house to go out to the garage to get things set up for Jason and Owen who caught a deer this evening and are going to clean it over here. So many boys doing boy things!
Or, you know- people doing people things.
In the spirit of deer season, I have made venison meatballs for our supper per Gibson's request. Well, he asked for meatballs although he did not specify venison. But that's what we're having. There will be spaghetti, too. And I have a loaf of bread rising. Amazing what not-dead yeast can do.
I have barely stopped all day. I stripped the guest room bed and our bed, washed the sheets, remade the beds, did another load of laundry, and made another batch of fruit cakes.
I'll get those rum-wrapped tomorrow. That may be all the fruitcake I am making this Christmas. Not sure. I'm making those small loaves to give as gifts and think along with the two larger cakes I made a few days ago, I'll probably have enough. No one needs too much fruitcake although, as Bill Wharton, the Sauce Boss, the one and only Florida Bluesman who cooks gumbo onstage while he plays, often says, "Too much is just enough."
And he should know.
And I should know that that is a terribly written sentence with too much in the way of commas.
And I should know that that is a terribly written sentence with too much in the way of commas.
Anyway, I am tired. I've run the dishwasher twice and I need to go unload it again and make the spaghetti. Owen and Jason just pulled up to the garage so I'm sure there's a lot going on down there but it IS Friday night and Mr. Moon better get his butt up here and make me a martini.
It's chilly, y'all, and going to perhaps get into the freezing zone tonight. I'm going to bring in my baby mangos and my beloved sea grape and the rest of the plants can just root hog or die.
Happy Friday, y'all.
Love...Ms. Moon
Are you channeling my dear departed Mother? Those fruitcakes look just like hers before she wrapped them in rum soaked cheesecloth. She used to give me 3 of them every year. God, they were good!
ReplyDeleteThree of them? She really did love you, Jim.
DeleteSo Owen has successfully apprenticed to the deer catching group! And Gibson is inducted to the preparation. The next generation is being brought up!
ReplyDeleteThis is not Owen's first deer by any means. He is learning the art and craft of it and blood and guts too.
DeleteI like your policy of staying out of the deer action and getting on with the fruitcake.
ReplyDeleteMe too! And Glen knows that.
DeleteYour men folk are successful hunters, and the grandsons are following in their footsteps. Hunting and fishing are great hobbies. Of all the things the boys could choose to do, this is ideal.
ReplyDeleteLuckily, you know how to prepare scrumptious the meals.
Venison meatballs sound delicious.
Well, I don't know that I'l ever truly be at peace with my grandsons hunting but it is what it is and they'll always be able to get meat for the table if things should go absolutely tits up.
DeleteThe meatballs were great.
A very busy and cheerful evening at your house. I hope you get that drink.
ReplyDeleteI did!
Deletejust reading what you've done today makes me tired! Holy cow! Love the pics....lovely May and Rachel.....and Gibson in his tie dye! (sp). and sounds like venison will be a frequent food for all of you!!!!!!!!! Happy Martini Gibson night!
ReplyDeleteSusan M
Yes, we do eat a lot of venison. Well, not a huge amount but our family does make use of it for sure.
DeleteWhat a busy day at Chez Moon! Tim is in bed this very minute. He intends to get up and be in the woods by 5:30. I made a good heart soup and some rolls that he can have for lunch if he goes out of the woods at all, but...I don't know. The man seems very determined.
ReplyDeleteGlen's gone to go pick up Owen to spend the night so they can go duck hunting in the morning way before dawn. Jesus. I cannot imagine. And it is cold here. For us, at least.
DeleteYour fruit cakes, ong, that would keep me glad, tell you what!
ReplyDeleteI really should try again- especially since it is my favorite in all of the world. Now is the time to make them, soak them , get on with it...
"caught a deer"...
I used to always get my fruitcakes made way before Thanksgiving but that hasn't happened in a while.
DeleteAnd yes, I convince myself that the guys catch their deer. Don't ask me how they unalive them in this theoretical practice.
The fruit cakes look very nice and I love Gibson's bright hoodie.
ReplyDeleteThe fruitcakes will be good.
DeleteI love Gibson's hoodie too!
That is indeed a lovely picture at the top. The genuine quality of the smiles is surely because of the subjects' relationship with the photographer. Butchering a deer on a Friday night sounds like an interesting item to put on Owen's resume under "Hobbies and Interests".
ReplyDeleteLily took that picture and yes, my girls do love each other a lot.
DeleteAround here it is not terribly unusual this time of year for boys to join with their elders to hunt and butcher deer. And Glen sure grew up in that culture. It really has thrilled him to pass on what his father taught him.
Well, you need to sit down and rest a bit, Mary, if you can!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to the movies today with my son, my sister and her husband. We will see Wicked which might be fun. I haven't been to the movies in so many years I cannot remember the last movie I saw.
I don't know if I'd like Wicked. I did not like the book but that means nothing. I tend to like movies that are more personality based. Relationships. Same with TV shows. But I do miss going to the theater and buying popcorn and sitting in the dark to watch that giant screen.
Deleteyour big porch plants should weather a short small dip to freezing. it's cold here, in the 40s, but not so cold I'm bringing anything in yet. I have plans to dig up another plant and put it in a pot since it is barely hanging on and definitely does not like where it's planted but we'll see. and as I wrote, I did nothing all day yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to cover my plants early this week. Supposed to get down into the twenties on Wednesday. This seemed to get here really fast. We were just bitching about the heat a few days ago. What happened to fall?
DeleteYeah, like Ellen said, I'm thinking plants on the porch will be fine as long as it doesn't get TOO cold for TOO long. You were certainly industrious!
ReplyDeleteYes sir. I'm going to push my plants to the back of the porch and cover them up. I do not want to lose them. They are like my children. Well. Sort of.
