And What Did You Think?

I became acquainted with Alexander McCall Smith's No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books via books on tape. I listen to books on tape as I walk or work in the yard and they can be a joy to listen to. The only problem I have with books on tape (besides the frustration when they do not work) is that sometimes the narrator is not, how you say? any damn good at all.
But sometimes, the narrator and the story come together to create a whole new dimension for the book and that was the case with these books. The narrator is a woman named Lisette Lecat and she herself is from South Africa and the way she speaks the words that form the stories of Mma (and how do you say that?) Precious Remotswe, Mma Makutsi and Mr. Matakoni is nothing short of brilliant.
Her voice. Oh, her voice.
She took these stories and presented them in a way so that I have enjoyed them with all my heart.
And so when I heard that HBO was going to do a Sunday night series of these books, I was very interested.
I watched the premier last night, staying up WAY past my bedtime, and I was entranced. It was just such a different project than HBO usually takes on. No drug addicts, no nudity, no designer fashions, no vampires or polygamists or NYC or anorexic Hollywood name-brand movie stars.
Instead, there was Mma Remotswe, a "traditionally built" Botswanan woman who with her smart brain and woman's intuition opens her own detective agency with the help of Mma Makutsi, a woman with large glasses who made an amazing 97% on her exams in the secretarial school. There is the vast scenery of Botswana and there is a tiny white van. There are children and there are beautiful dresses made of tribal prints.
There are, so far, no people of no-color.
And as I was watching this last night, it occured to me that in this country, at least, we rarely see a movie which does not have at least a few white people in it who drive the plot along with the people of color being the backdrop for the white people's story.
I'm sorry, but that's just the truth.
And so it was completely delightful to watch this movie where all the people are the people of another country with their own culture, their own scenery, their own voices, their own stories.
Their own.
I had been a tiny bit afraid that I would be disappointed after having formed my own pictures in my own head of Precious and Grace and the world in which they live, given to me by the words of Mr. McCall Smith and the voice of Ms. Lecat, but I was not. Not at all.
And I think the executives of HBO who took on this project and who are allowing it to be done so faithfully to the original stories should pat themselves on the back.
No Mafia, no hit men, no kinky sex or lurid murders.
Just Botswana and a smart woman who took the money left to her in the form of her daddy's herd of beautiful cows and opened a detective agency where with her fearlessness and intelligence she helps people with the sorts of problems that we all encounter.
I'm impressed.

  1. Man, I loved her dresses in this movie. They are so great. I wonder if she makes them herself (I'm talking about the character, of course). And I was not disappointed either. It was very well done.

  2. I've never reaad the stories, but I enjoyed the hell out of it. I like that you got a sense of what was being felt on the "bad guys'" side as well, for the most part. I also cracked up when they showed the sign at the end - what did it say? "BIG FAT HUSBAND STEALING DETECTIVE AGENCY"

  3. So...Magnum P.I. meets Wanda Sykes? Is that what I'm hearing?

I have cheap cable and only get the networks, a couple buy-junk-on-the-phone channels, and the other guns/whiteys/fast cars channels.

  4. I don't have HBO, but you're starting to make me wish I did... or maybe I'll just catch it on DVD.

  5. Honey- Weren't the dresses gorgeous?
I think Precious buys her dresses. I'm not sure, though.

DTG- YES! That was great! And weren't the credits delightful?

Magnum and Steph- Invite yourself to someone's house to watch or just wait for the DVD, yes. In the meantime, go check those audio books out of the library. It's free. And they are lovely.

  6. You know, I never even think of the library. It just doesn't occur to me. Apparently I really like giving Amazon my money. Maybe I'll go this Saturday...

  8. I love these books but haven't managedto see theseriesyet, even though it was just on :(

A couple years ago I had a market bake stall and this lovely American man andhis wonderful kids were there, on the way back to the states, after six years work in Botswana

He told me all about how it wasa
exactly like the books, down to the characters who actually live there, and how you could watch scenes from the , like Mma Whoever going shopping, played out from your front yard.

It really brought it to life for me.

  9. Steph- I could not LIVE without the library which I consider to be an example of the highest form of civilization. THEY LET YOU TAKE BOOKS OUT FOR FREE!
    Oh my god.

CMe- Well, your boyfriend and I share an addiction. I don't think you'd be disappointed with the movie.

Jo- I sort of thought that the books were written with such a loving eye that perhaps yes, Botswana WAS like that. I'm glad to hear that is true.

  10. What I love best about them is the sweet but meaningful simplicity of the characters, Precious especially. They seem to be meditations on goodness and decency. On paying attention to your soul, and carrying yourself lightly, not allowing negativity or unfairness to burden you.

Some people find them too innocent, not enough happening, but I think they're important. And lovely!

  11. Jo- EXACTLY! Which is why I'm a bit surprised that HBO is doing this. But I'm grateful they are.

  12. Sounds wonderful. I felt the same way about the CD version of The Secret Life of Bees; the narrator's voice was so, so beautiful. Have you heard it?

  13. Mrs. 444- I am the only woman in North America who didn't like that book, aren't I? I did read it. But I didn't listen to it.

  14. It sounds lovely...even though I DO enjoy the vampire and polygamy shows, too.

  15. GingerMagnolia- Hey. I was a Sex In The City addict. Loved Six Feet Under. Thought it was brilliant. Big Love makes me feel a little dirty, but I watch it. But this is just so different. And I think I like that.

  16. Have you seen the ads for the Grey Gardens movie that they are making for HBO? I justed watched the original documentary. Have you ever seen it?

    Lemme just say "woah".

  17. Shout out for Big Love and True Blood too! I loves me some HBO.

  18. Lady Lemon- "Gray Gardens"? I am ignorant. Tune me in.
True Blood has not done it for me. And Big Love, while vastly entertaining, always leave me wanting a shower.

  19. Grey Gardens is a rather disturbing, yet fascinating, documentary about Edith Beale and her daughter, Little Edie. They were close cousins of Jackie O and members of a very well off family. Somehow through a series of bad events they ended up living in squalor in the old, falling-apart mansion which was named Grey Gardens. HBO is making a movie about the real lives of these women (to be played by Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange). It's scheduled to come out in a couple of weeks.

  20. Oh! And Deadwood! Let's not forget Deadwood which was the best thing ever done on film.
    Well, in my opinion.

  21. I want to confess that I think about Deadwood every. single. day. I was literally just thinking about Calamity Jane and her first interaction with "Swidgen".

  22. Jane is perhaps my favorite. Her heart is SO good.

  23. I totally missed out on the Deadwood for some reason. If it is that good I will have to check it out on DVD.

  24. I watched all 3 seasons pretty quickly, one after another. And then I'm pretty sure for about a week and a half I called everyone from ama down "cocksucker".

  25. Lady Lemon- It's THAT good. Do it. Now.
