Today was Maggie's last soccer game of the season. See her there on the right? She is the tallest person on the team and the only girl. Oh, these Moon genes. We had a good time watching her in the early afternoon. The weather was perfect, cool, sunny, but not cold. Lily, Lauren, Jason, and Maggie's other grandmother were all there. Owen joined us after he got off work and Gibson is with his best bud on a lake weekend with his friend's family. Our girl played goalie for half the game and did very well there. We were proud! So was she.
Since it was the last game, the kids got medals and pizza and cold drinks. We adults, however, got nothing so you know us- we all went out to lunch. At a Mexican restaurant! Well, Jason and his mother couldn't make it but the rest of us did. Honestly, we really shouldn't have. Not Mr. Moon and me, anyway. We have about a gallon of soup here at home to eat. But it was more about hanging out with sweeties than eating and we will eat leftovers tonight.
The requisite Owen-Boppy picture.
He has gotten noticeably taller since the last time I saw him maybe a month ago. If that. I just love the way he has to lean way over to give me a hug and he always says, "I love you, Mer."
"I love you too," I tell him. And you know I do.
Levon had a soccer game today too and Vergil sent us three little videos that another parent sent him of Levon scoring. Three times. One goal per video. That guy is a rocket.
As I've said, the camellias here are just going insane. I went out a little while ago and picked a basketful and then I took their pictures.
And so it has been a good-enough day. Not one as easily lived as yesterday but few are. I think one of my favorite things about the whole day was simply watching the children run and kick and scramble around that field. They are so agile, so spry.
Spry. Now is that an old lady word or not?
Reminds me of a discussion that Steve and Jessie and I had wherein I was saying that I use the old lady card a lot and how much I hate it when young whippersnappers make me feel not only very old but very stupid when it comes to technological things and how I often give them my speech about how "When I was your age," which cracked up Jessie and Steve both. I said, "Now you know those words just immediately grab people's attention and make them want to hear exactly what you're going to say next." Which is the farthest thing from the truth but let's be real- I DO sometimes find myself saying "when I was your age" but not in a you-don't-know-how-lucky-you-are way but more in a technology is second nature to you so please be patient with us old folks way. We've had a lot to learn.

We've had a lot to learn.
Glen was telling me that when he was taking the boys to gymnastics the other day, he had the dashboard display screen on which shows a sort of map of where the car is and where it's going and August said, "I like the map to show the actual direction the car is going," and Glen said, "I do too." August then proceeded to direct him as to how to change the display so it would and that was that.
Meanwhile, every time the home screen in my car manages to get changed from the display I like to a different one, it takes me at least fifteen minutes to relearn which fucking buttons to push on the steering wheel to give me my options and to select the ones I want. We wise old elders simply do not have the technological intuition that kids born after the technical revolution have. We're still brain-wired to the same technology that we learned when we had to turn the TV on manually and then change the channels with a dial. That to learn something we had to consult a dictionary or encyclopedia. That the idea of someone having a watch like Dick Tracy's that was also a video-phone was nothing but science fiction as out-there as flying cars.
And where ARE the flying cars? Dammit. I want one.
And where ARE the flying cars? Dammit. I want one.
I mean- microwave ovens were RADICAL to us. An ice maker in the refrigerator door was something only kings and movie stars had. A clock radio was a big damn deal.
And so yes, we've had to learn and to adapt and even just to accept, which is probably the hardest thing of all.
But here's the main thing that the people who make jokes about how their parents and grandparents can't figure out the remote have forgotten- they may know more about technology than we ever will and they can use it with ease while we have to think about it with our black and white brains that are still looking for the on/off switch BUT it was people who were even older than most of their grandparents who envisioned, invented, and created this world they live in where everything they need is literally at their fingertips, in their pockets. And they can thank us or they can curse us for that and sometimes I truly believe that cursing us would be the more sensible action but please- when we do need help with the remote, be kind to us. And always remember- we taught you how to wipe your own butts.
So there is that.
Love...Ms. Moon
Thanks for taking us along to the soccer game. I needed that. And the flowers as always I needed too.
ReplyDeleteThank you for coming along with me. I need that more than you know sometimes.
DeleteShe is a very big Girl, and Soccer is such good exercise for Kiddos, and very popular now. All my Female Grandkids back East played Soccer clear up thru High School and it kept them fit and sometimes they were the only Girls on the Team too. I used to Love going to the Kid's Sporting Events, it's Character and Team Building for Children to be involved in Group Activities. Those Flowers are gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI think that sports definitely can be all of those things but I also think that not everyone is cut out to be part of a team. My husband definitely benefited greatly from his years playing basketball. I would not have lasted two weeks on any sort of sports team, I'm afraid.
DeleteI am so frustrated by descriptions that say the use of whatever is "intuitive". Not for me.
ReplyDeleteRight? "Intuitive" is knowing that berries will taste better than poop. At least that's how I feel about it.
DeleteOn the tech downside is young 'uns aren't taught basic stuff. Like basic adding, subtracting and multiplying (division is the invention of the devil). I bought 6 buttons at 90 cents each and the lass behind the counter had to use a calculator.
ReplyDeleteAs long as kids can play sport and run around in the fresh air there is hope for the future.
You're right. And I guess as long as we still have phones and calculators, it'll be fine that kids don't know basic math skills although I think they do learn quite a few. Now cursive? Nope. My grandkids can't read it.
DeleteTeach them to write it so they can read it.
DeleteSuch an athletic family, great to see. I've been working with technology since the early 60s but it changes so fast it's hard to keep up unless you're spending a lot of time on it.
ReplyDeleteAmen.
DeleteCongratulations to Maggie for learning the rules of soccer and playing the goalie position as the only girl on the team. Great accomplishment! Having the family watch the game and support all her efforts is really lovely.
ReplyDeleteYour camellias are so beautiful. Watching them grow and having cut flowers all the time is the ideal.
Children are wired for technology today. The schools promote it from a very young age. That said, US math and reading scores have dipped since Covid. My friends with school age children are using Ninja Math online to help bring scores up to grade level. They also hire reading tutors. Reading is key. If you can't read independently, you can't learn independently.
Although tech skills are impressive, other basic skills need to be improved. Our future workforce requires all these skills, not just tech.
I think you're very right about the reading skills. Unless we can read and digest and understand what we're reading, all the information on the internet isn't going to mean much. That's just the truth of it.
DeleteCovid did do a number on our kids, didn't it?
Beautiful Moon children. How handsome Owen is! As for technology, i prided myself on keeping up until AI came along. For some reason I resist that particular innovation like its the devil. It's unsettling to me, the blurring of reality but ignoring it won't make it go away.
ReplyDeletemy whole thing about AI is have they never seen the Terminator? Or I, Robot? Or 2001 A Space Odyssey?
DeleteExactly! I still dislike the name Hal.
DeleteAI is one of those things that make me less sorry that my time on the planet is limited. I don't understand it and I don't like what I do understand about it.
DeleteAnd Ellen- you're right. Mary- I actually knew a guy named Hal. He was almost as bad as the computer in Space Odyssey.
I'm still wondering about the necessity of dashboard screens in cars. If you already know where you are going and how to get there, why need a screen to show you the way? You have to keep taking your eyes off the road to glance at it. I don't drive at all, so maybe they are worth the hassle, I wouldn't really know.
ReplyDeleteDo Maggie and Levon practise soccer together when they visit? Owen must be six feet tall by now.
The camellias are still as beautiful as ever.
Sometimes one doesn't know how to get there, and the map helps you find your way. It is not like you are constantly staring at it for minutes at a time - mostly no more than a glance, the same as you would use to check your speedometer to see if you are driving over the speed limit or to glance at your gas gauge. Some cars even have a magical voice telling you when you need to turn right in 1,000 yards, etc., Personally I find it very helpful.
DeleteWell, this display is not a map to tell you how to get somewhere (that's another app you can use though). It just shows where you are on the road and what the nearby roads are and what direction you're going and stuff like that. I don't use it. I have a screen display that acts as a compass and also, tells me the name of the road I'm on and the speed limit on it. I love that feature.
DeleteAna- the map apps telling us how to get to our desired destination are truly lifesaving for me.
I grew up with paper maps and Trip Tiks from the AAA. My first GPS that plugged in to the dash had me going the wrong way down a one way street. I agree that young people are wired for technology. I do love to see them running around outside.
ReplyDeleteI do remember the Trip Tiks! I had one when I drove from Denver to Tallahassee. It worked quite well!
DeleteI, too, am glad when I see kids playing outside or when I see Maggie making up scenarios in her head and acting them out with dolls and things. She has a vast imagination and even all the screens don't seem to hinder that.
Me, Carol.
ReplyDeleteI have the same problem with my car screen too! Yesterday I had my GPS on in order to get up to Avoriaz and Julien (who I was taking up there to go dog sledding) asked if I ever put the GPS voice into English. So I did, and he was roaring laughing listening to this very posh English voice mangling French place names! So now he knows why I leave it in French!
ReplyDeleteMy map-woman-voice and Siri on my iPhone have no idea how to pronounce many of the names of places around here. So many of them are of Native origin like Miccosukee and Wakulla and Apalachicola and they just cannot get them right. Or even names like "Levon" which Siri insists on saying, "Lavon" when it is "Leevon." It can be pretty amusing.
DeleteYes indeed, where are the flying cars that science fiction promised us? I want a red one. As for "soccer" (Great Britain - football), it's good to hear that both Magnolia and Levon are really into it. We have some Americans playing for professional clubs over here and maybe they will sign your grandchildren up one day. I would like to see three-goal Levon in a Hull CIty shirt.
ReplyDeleteI think I want a teal one, Mr. P.
DeleteI could see Levon playing overseas. But on a football team or a basketball team? So far we've discovered he's very good at both of those.
The camelias continue to have me in awe. Your family always makes me smile. Good going Maggie!
ReplyDeleteI really am proud of Maggie. I would not have bet on her making it all the way through the season but here she is!
DeleteI bet the soccer outing was fun. Great to see smiling, triumphant Maggie and Lily and Jason too. And beautiful camellias as always!
ReplyDeleteI had a terrible time trying to figure out how to control the media and the display screen in my rental car when I was in Florida. I did finally manage to pair my phone to the stereo with bluetooth but I never used the map function.
I paired my phone to bluetooth in my car but then I undid it. I didn't want to hear everything over the car speakers. Sometimes I have to google to find out how to do screen-display changes. Technology to figure out technology.
DeleteMakes sense, I guess.
I'm glad my 2014 Scion doesn't have all that fancy crap on it. It seems like it would be a distraction while driving to have a screen with a map. I'm just thankful it does have Bluetooth, which is great for long drives when I want to call someone and safely gab away while driving!
ReplyDeleteOwen is going to be as tall as Mr. Moon, I think. I can't believe how he's grown. I also wonder if Maggie and her cousins practice soccer together? I'm sure they'd love it and their skills would improve.
Your camellias are perfection. Several of our neighbors have lovely camellias and I always wish I could go pick some for the house. My next door neighbor has told me to help myself, but I feel bad traipsing through her yard and cutting flowers (not that she pays them any attention!)
As I said in a comment above, my screen display tells me what direction I'm driving, what the name of the road is I'm on, and what the speed limit is. This last one, especially, is helpful.
DeleteLast time Owen went to the doctor, he said that Owen might get up to be 6'8" which would put him as tall as his grandfather was at one time. Since Owen's only fifteen, I think he still probably has some growing to do so we'll see. He WANTS to be as tall as his Boppy.
Seems like when the kids get together, they play basketball. That's fine too.
I know exactly what you mean about picking a neighbor's flowers, even when they've given you permission. It just doesn't feel right.
My car is a 2007 and so it has none of the fancy tech stuff. I'm hoping it lasts as long as I do or at least for as long as I can drive.
ReplyDeleteMy grandson Thomson wants to be an engineer when he grows up and design vehicles as he just loves vehicles. He said he would design a flying car so I'm glad you mentioned them in your post!
August wants to be an engineer too. His daddy is and I can see that August thinks much like Vergil. He also told me he wants to design cars, including the flying kind.
DeleteDashboard screen? What is this dashboard screen of which you speak? My 2014 car only shows me backing up which is fucking useless since I still can't figure out which line is the one when I'm going to back into something. One line please, the important one but no, it's a whole rectangle with many lines. And I'm so envious of all your gorgeous camellias as usual.
ReplyDeleteOh, I LOVE my back-up camera. It does have three different lines and so I know what you're talking about. I had to google to find out which line is the real STOP one.
DeleteI sure wish camellias would grow for you. But you do have a lot of other flowers I am envious of.
I get 11 year olds to do stuff for me on my phone all the time..... i'm like you with mending stuff and I keep a sewing kit at work and kids are always impressed when I can fix something for them..... glad to hear soccer was a success for both the grands this weekend. things have been mundane here which all things considered, is a good thing. xxalainaxx
ReplyDeleteI love that you have a sewing kit at work! I know the kids love that you can fix something for them. And I love that they help you with your phone. Two kinds of magic- they know the tech kind and you know the sewing kind.
DeleteI'm glad to hear that things are calm there. Sometimes flat-out boring is the best.
My 3 sons all played soccer until high school. I played even in college back in the 60s! Team sports are really important, as is technology and reading and math! Kids have more to learn these days. But oh your Camelias! What beauties they are. You reminded me of several things that hadn't been in my brain for quite a while. I saw the current model of a flying car - don't bother, it just hovers and doesn't seem to know what to do! But fortunately we have sci-fi movies where they are zooming all through space...where maybe there's breathable air or not!
ReplyDeleteKids DO have more to learn these days and we need to remember that before we start moaning about them not knowing their times tables. Even just the amount of knowledge about our world increases so quickly!
DeleteI always think of George Jetson's car. Seemed like he got around pretty well in that thing.
I like to remind the sassy ones that I taught them how to eat with a spoon.
ReplyDeleteExactly!
DeleteI love maggie's "second position" ballet stance in the top photo as boss of the team. As well as her S shaped in between her parents giving them equal love with her little body. Very sweet, that family.
ReplyDeleteYou flowers bowl me over, they are SO
perfect.
Thank you for pointing things out to me that I probably never would have noticed. As Steve and I agreed- you are the most generous person. And I mean that in so many ways.
DeleteCamellias? Hell, I just planted them and this is what happened. I can take no credit at all.
Jack told me the other morning that he was "tuckered out". He sounded like a 62 year old grandma:)
ReplyDeleteOh my god! I do love that!
DeleteI remember when I first used a fax machine and thought, this is the future.
ReplyDeleteAlso: The grandchild asked recently, granny, when will you get old?
