In Which I Get Scammed And Scarred

Last night's salad. It was as good as it was pretty.

Today was a little more troublesome than yesterday and not quite as pleasant.
Y'all- I got scammed! That has never happened to me before but it happened today. And honestly, I don't feel that stupid for falling for it because the scam was that good.
I was on FB, scrolling, which I do far too frequently and came across a very legit looking ad for a Duluth Trading Company sale and so I hit the "shop now" button. I get all my overalls from Duluth and I love their products. They can be very pricey but when they go on sale, the prices go way down. Trust me- I have bought many items on sale from them.
So, I'm now scrolling through the sale items and everything is organized just like always. I suspected nothing! I mean, I tried to "purchase" a few items that they actually told me they were out of in my size.
That's some clever shit!
Anyway, the truth dawned on me with the help of a customer service lady at Duluth whom I'd called because my card wasn't accepted. "You need to call your bank!" she said. Good advice, eh?
So I called the dang fraud department and the charge had not gone through and that was the only activity on it today but to be sure, a block was put on it and I'll be getting my new card in seven to ten business days.
Pain in the butt. But definitely a first-world problem.

So that all took a lot of time and I didn't get outside until later than I'd wanted to. But...oh well. I'm not punching any time clocks. I went back to the same part of the yard I was working in yesterday. This is what it looks like.

That's an almost-ground level view. What you're looking at are the stems of dead ferns (the snow got 'em), sprouting white mouth dayflower, which is the one I talked about yesterday with the thick and yet fragile runner root, and dewberries. I'm also digging up greater periwinkle which is a horrible vine and nothing like the sweet periwinkles I grew up with in Roseland and yes, it is invasive as is the dayflower and the dewberry and there's another vine in there that I don't know the name of but it's hell to pull too.
I swear. Last night I googled, "Is Round Up legal in Florida?" because I'm at my wit's end with these dang plants that want to grow where I don't want them to grow. I doubt I'd use it, mostly because of the danger of harming the trees but also, a lot of my neighbors have wells as their main water source and Lord knows we don't want to mess with that. But this is ridiculous and please, let us not go through the various methods of ridding beds of unwanted plants like vinegar or salt or dish soap or covering with one thing or another.
These things do not work in Florida. They just don't.

And on top of all this, Maurice got very pissed off at me because I quit stroking her from head to rump which she likes me to do when we're outside (never inside), turned around and got me good.

It's not as bad as it looks. My skin is thin as tissue paper and I'll bleed if you just look at me with anger in your eyes. I've washed it and it now looks a lot less frightening but good Lord. What kind of cat does this?

That kind.
I swear. She is a hell bitch. I bopped her on the nose and yelled at her and in ten minutes, she was back asking to be stroked again.
I did not even acknowledge her presence. She didn't care.

But I got some things done and my entire bank account was not wiped out and I played a little piano and I picked greens and a carrot and some green onions for a curried tofu stir fry tonight.

And I picked these too.

I got nothing to complain about.

I'm hungry!

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. FB is full of crap like that, I have moused (not even clicked on) over a post and had what appeared to be a ransomware attack try to board my laptop. Shut it off immediately and nothing happened. I am damn careful now.

    1. Honestly, I have linked to companies advertised in FB before and never had a problem. I was so sure that I knew all the subtle signs of a fake site. Looks like I did not. And I think that AI is getting very, very good and very, very clever.

  2. Being scammed is the pits. I know, and have waited seven to ten days for a new card. Taught me a valuable lesson about having only one card. Don't, have two. Will Mr. Moon need a replacement card, too?

    1. I had a back-up credit card so all was not lost and then today my credit union called and asked if I'd like to come pick up a card today so I'm back in business. No, Glen didn't need a replacement. We're actually on separate accounts for certain things.

  3. That cat is vicious. I might have thrown her across the yard if she did that to me.
I was able to get Katie into the doc today and Katie is fine, thank goodness. The doc checked her over and couldn't find anything wrong with her. Then we went out for lunch and ran into an old caregiver of Katie's from seventeen years ago. Katie hasn't changed in all those years. So we had lunch and ice cream and she was fine.
I came home and yelled at one of the dogs and cried. I'm not fine and I'm tired of feeling depressed and feeling like a failure. I know it will pass but it doesn't feel like you can go around telling people your depressed without them getting all up in your business. Sigh.

    1. When I sent Glen the picture of what Maurice had done to me he texted back, "Where in the yard did you bury her?"
Glad to hear that Katie's good and healthy and I hope that her other situation cools down a bit. Poor thing- she just can't tell you what's wrong! But I am sure that you are able to diagnose her a lot of the time. You've spent decades watching her, tending her, loving her.
I know what you mean about people getting all up in your business. And guess what? I was going to suggest that you might want to find a good counselor! Honestly, your mental health and wellbeing and happiness is absolutely as important as anyone else's in the family. YOU are what keeps the whole thing ticking along.

  4. You did good! The scammers are out there big time. I'm glad you prevented any damage that could have been done. Debit cards are quick cash. I use my American Express (AE) card. AE has a big fraud dept. and they seem on top of things. I also review my monthly statement closely. Once I saw a Starbucks charge and I never charge for coffee. AE reimbursed me the small charge. AE told me this is part of the scam, one small charge then on to much bigger charges...if nobody notices.
Maurice was not a very good girl today. Give her the silence treatment for a few days.

    1. There are so many places that don't take American Express though. The fraud department at our credit union is also really good at catching what might possibly be unauthorized charges.
Oh, Maurice. What can I say? If she were an actual person I would tell her to get a job and pack a bag.

  5. Facebook!!!
anyway I won't rant...I will say that we had gardeners deal with our jungle for a few years, They used round up and I screamed at them. They got uppity claiming that it was safe and that it was the only way to get rid of horse tail. That was a lie, they just didn't want to put that sort of digging effort into the project. Young folks- he is dead now- cancer from round up.

    1. I've known people who used a LOT of Round Up and one did die from cancer but I don't know that it was a result of her using the product. The other woman is still hale and hearty as far as I know.
I need a crew. That is what I need.

  6. Ouch! Bad Maurice! Lola has never clawed me that bad and the last time she clawed me I smacked her (not hard enough to hurt) and she backed off looking so surprised. If she continually did to me what Maurice does to you, she would no longer be living with me.
I'm sorry you almost got scammed, those scammers are getting really clever. The green onions are what we call spring onions and I like to chop one finely then soften it in a little butter before I tip the beaten eggs into the pan for scrambled eggs.

    1. I don't know what I'd do with Maurice if I wanted to get rid of her? Get her put down? Can't do that. No one else would take her, that's for sure. And if they did they'd bring her back. She's just my bratty child, I guess.
We call them spring onions too, sometimes. Or scallions. Or...green onions. They are good in so many dishes, aren't they?

  7. I love cats.....but, they're basically nuts and unpredictable at times. My 125 lb. Rottie was less scary than my 6 lb. cat! In fact, that cat sent me to the ER last summer. LOL! My Rottie was nothing but hugs and kisses...always.
Being scammed is creepy. I get stuff all time in my email bating me.
    I just sent to spam.

    1. But some cats are just total love-bugs. Purring, furry, warm little friends. Not this one. But you're right. They're all a little wacky. They do not behave in a consistently sane manner.
I really thought I was good at detecting fake sites and I never click on a link that comes in an unsolicited email or text but AI must be getting better all the time.

  8. I have one good advice for (or is it against?) those Periwinkles. Steam. I have an old steaming apparatus, and it kills most anything not having a tap root with a weekly treatment - I know this is not Florida, so you might need a steaming every three days for a while ;) Still way easier than pulling or digging.

    1. So you pull a steamer outside with an extension cord? And then you steam the plants you don't want? What if they're right next to plants you do want? And almost all the plants that I want to get rid of do have long tap roots. Or running roots that travel underground. I really don't think that would work for me.

  9. That’s a pain about the bank card, but could have been so much worse. It’s too easy to be scammed. Can’t trust Facebook. Maurice certainly can be an asshole. Many cats will attack if you try TO pet them, not if you stop. What a jerk! But those camelias!

    1. Let's face it- my cat is insane. She just is. An insane asshole.
And no, obviously you cannot trust FB. I would normally never click on an ad but in this case- I love that company and have ordered so much from them and I just didn't think twice.
      DOH!
The camellias are giving me so much pleasure right now. I will be sad when they go.

  10. I'm glad you caught the credit card scam fast. And that you won't use roundup however desperate you get. They've settled a lot of claims as a known carcinogen.

I'm wondering if you can get an annual cut to the ground with one of those commercial cutters they use here which raze road side shrubs? Landscape firms have them. It might save a lot of pulling and backache.

    1. I know that about Round Up and I wasn't planning on using it but good Lord, I DO get desperate.
Cutting to the ground wouldn't do a bit of good. All of these plants have vast networks of roots underneath. And besides that- there ARE plants among the invasive ones that I want to keep! But I do need help.

  11. Yes, I was thinking like Boud. Hire someone to come in with equipment to dig out what you don't want? What do I know - I am not a good gardener.
I'm sorry you got scammed but glad you caught it quickly. Don't buy anything today and stay off of Facebook today, too. Economic blackout day!

    1. I really do need to call my sort-of-friend landscape business owner and get him to come over and look at the place and tell me what he thinks.
I did not stay off Facebook today. Sorry.

  12. Thanks for the pictures of the flowers... I needed a little boost like that today!

  13. I'm curious at to why you don't mow the invasive plants with a push mower. Or I bought a battery operated weed eater last year, it's light weight and easy to maneuver around plants you want to keep. I love your your flower pictures. It's like a daily dose of sunshine and smiles.

    1. Cutting back the invasive plants do no good. They just regrow from the roots.

  14. Don't feel dumb. They almost got me to the tune of $400 once and I consider myself alert to scams. There's a ground cover that has just taken over here since the flood. Everywhere it touches it sends out new deep roots, make a dense mat that smothers out other stuff. It does make tiny yellow flowers but I hate it. It's constantly colonising my flower beds and I'm afraid in the yard it's going to prevent the bluebonnets.

Cat will swipe at me if she's not ready for me to stop petting her, have to be quick, but she's never done the kind of damage Maurice inflicts.

    1. Your new ground cover sounds like our chenille plant except that it has red fluffy blossoms. Like chenille. It, too, is like a mat both under the dirt and above.

  16. How interesting about the Facebook scam. That's pretty impressive, that they were able to duplicate a site that they know you like and have used before. (Or did they hack the real site and somehow divert your payment to them?) Anyway, glad it got sorted out in the end. I never buy anything off Facebook and now I'm glad I don't!

Maybe Maurice is possessed? Have you thought of an exorcism? :)

  17. Oh my god that scratch is scary. Methinks Maurice has used up more than nine lives by now. Sounds like Mr. Moon thinks so too. His comment made me laugh.

  18. Cats gotta cat. Google Burnout Weed Killer for a natural alternative to round up. Smells good, works well.
