Oh NO!

It has just been pointed out to me that sago palms are not the innocent little beauties we think they are. I have been directed to a web site explaining this and now all is clear, my eyes can see.

Please. Do not buy a sago palm. Instead, check this out:
http://mo-driver.com/sago-palm-plants-kill.htm

And if the robotic voice of the person giving the warning doesn't kill you, the cyanide of the the dreaded Sago will. Or at least it will kill your poor innocent puppies and kitties.

Frankly I don't know why there is any living life form left in Lloyd at all because you see all those "bushes" in front of my house? They are all sago palms. There must be twenty of them.
And yet- and yet! All of my pets are alive and relatively well.

Promises, promises.

I have to thank Ms. All This Trouble for the head's up on this dire sago situation. I am so grateful for eagle-eyed readers who are doing their best to keep me from being sued by unfortunate pet owners.

And now, excuse me, please. I need to go feed my dogs some chocolate. It's their favorite treat!

  1. Giving your puppies chocolate means you love them. That's what I hear, anyway =)

  3. You know, this whole not feeding dogs chocolate thing I think is a bunch of hooey.

We gave our family poodle, not only choc, but spaghetti and really pretty much any left overs and he lived to be so old we finally had to euthanize him! (due to severe chronic arthritis)

I have never heard of this sago scare, so I will check it out. Thanks for keeping us all informed. xo pf

  4. Funny... the problem is more with puppies who are teething and chew on things. Older dogs are stupid and don't have to put their mouths on everything. Most chocolate is fine for dogs. It contains theobromine which is toxic in quanity. Milk chocolate does not contain enough to really harm a dog. If I remember correctly they have to eat one ounce per pound (dogs body weight) of milk chocolate to be toxic. With bakers chocolate it is about an ounce for every nine to ten pounds.
And on feeding table scraps, There really is nothing wrong with that as long as you are feeding them something non fatty and something healthy like what we should always eat. I have seen little old ladies that cook for their 20 year old poodles every day and they are doing well. AND I have seen people try and do right by their dog and feed them Science Diet and it kill them. Did you know that Science Diet actually contains a known carcinogen. I once asked a rep why they did not remove it and his response was "Oh they don't live long enough for it to kill them". Now a raw food diet is the best and most healthiest however they fill meats with hormones now so that is not good. My own dog had a bad case of botchulism from her raw meat diet. So it is hard to figure out isn't it.
Can you tell I was once a vet tech! LOL

  7. Remember when the poos ate that bag of chocolate covered espresso beans and turned into psycho beasts?

  8. Lora- And saga it is.

Petit Fleur- I am not afraid of the sago. And my dogs eat EVERYTHING.

Sarah- Whoa! You do know a lot about dogs. And you're right- perhaps a sago could kill a puppy if it chewed upon a branch. They're so spiny though, that I can't imagine anything being stupid enough to do that.

    Kori- Well, I obviously do.

DTG- I will never, ever forget that.

  9. Hmmm. I don't have any of these around where I live, so I couldn't say either way if my dogs would try to chew it. My little one if pretty dumb though, so maybe.

As far as chocolate goes, my step brother would always manage to let his dog eat all of his halloween/x-mas/easter candy when we were growing up. It never got really ill or died, it would just have nasty diarrhea for couple of days.

  10. Lady Lemon- A friend of mine's dogs ate an entire batch of either chocolate chip cookies and she freaked out (chocolate kills dogs!) and called her vet and asked what she should do.
He suggested she pour them a nice glass of cold milk to go with all that chocolately goodness they'd just consumed.
