Colors

The soft, lightweight muslin blanket I ordered last week arrived yesterday evening and I was excited to get it. Unfortunately, as I had feared, the color is more of a sagey-olive color than what was pictured online.

I do, however, like the weight of it and the fact that it's big enough to act nicely as a bedspread and actually, I think it would look very good in the guest room which is painted almost the same color green but lighter. It was not that expensive and so I believe I'll order another one of a different color for our bedroom whose walls are a very soft blue with just the merest suggestion of a lavender. Maybe not even a suggestion. Maybe just a vague idea. But I'm going to sleep under this one before I make that for-sure decision.

In some ways, I got nothing done today. In another way, I accomplished a huge task. Well, what I consider a huge task. But before I get there, I'll tell you that Lily and Jessie and all the kids met up for lunch (of course!) at the Mexican restaurant in Tallahassee that we like because we can sit outside and not bother anyone. It was the first meet-up of the sisters and the cousins since Jessie got back and so there was much to catch up on. The kids took up their relationships right where they left them a few months ago and so did Lily and Jessie. I pretty much knew most of the news from both sides so I didn't have much to offer but after we'd finished eating but still talking, Owen came around the table and sat down next to me and we had one of our good chats. Today we discussed teachers. The really, really good ones that can change your life. He told me about a few he's had, notably one science teacher, and I told him about my favorite college professor, the dearly departed Dr. Jones who taught American political history. I have written about him in years past. Owen and I agreed a teacher who loves the subject they teach and who has good teaching skills, can make you love the subject too. We all know this is true.
And we agreed that some teachers just really should not be in a classroom. We did not elaborate on that subject though.

I got no pictures from lunch. I have no idea why. Everyone was so busy talking and eating, I guess. But it was really fun and Maggie went home with Jessie and August and Levon for a play date and Lily took her big boys home so she could take a nap. She had to get up at three this morning to get to work to do some sort of inventory or something. So yes, she needed a nap badly. The boys probably did too, having spent the night at their dad's where bedtimes are not really enforced. They're not strictly enforced at Lily's house either but all of this is about to change since school starts on Monday. There are going to be some difficult mornings for a while before brains and bodies adjust to the changes.

And then I decided to go to a Goodwill a few miles down the road. I specifically was looking for dishes and twin bed sheets. Goodwill has gotten so expensive lately that it's not nearly as exciting as it used to be but it's not a bad idea to check things out occasionally.
So I drove there and went in the store, got a little cart in an optimistic moment, and before I got ten yards into the store I found these.

They hadn't been put on the shelf yet and I grabbed them up and put them in my cart in the space of a breath.
Now here's the thing. When we were in North Carolina, staying at the perfect house on the creek, the kitchen had Fiesta Ware just like this, in all the colors. Glen and I talked about how having dishes like that would certainly add some color to the cabin's kitchen and they are sturdy, too. When we got home, I did a little online searching and found that a set of bowls, plates, and salad plates for four cost right around $160.00. But in some sort of Goodwill glitch, I got 12 dinner plates, ten salad plates, and ten bowls for $40.00.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?

Come to mama, you shiny, colorful things, you.
There are colors in this collection that I've never seen in Fiesta Ware before.

In a way, they remind me of zinnias- happy colors.

So that is the big thing I accomplished. I got the dishes for the cabin and they are the exact ones Mr. Moon really wanted. He is so pleased. I am too, really. I feel like that was the biggest gift I ever got from the gods of thrifting.

And speaking of Mr. Moon, here's the picture he sent ME this evening.

Stove is in. He sent me the basic instruction sheet via text and I was not thrilled to learn that I can't use copper or some types of stainless steel which rules out the Revere Ware I was trying to put together for that kitchen. Oh well. At least I can use cast iron. And of course Le Creuset is just FINE but I'm not going to find that in a thrift store. Even the knock-off, copy-cats you can sometimes, but hardly ever find, are dinged up.
Sigh.
We shall persevere and I need to learn how to use an induction cook-top.

For all of you who suggested that I hire someone to come and deal with this downed tree while Mr. Moon isn't here, I thank you but that's not how our marriage works. All marriages have unwritten and unspoken contracts, I believe, which are silently written and agreed to over the years and which we generally abide by. Say what you will- that is how it usually works. And in our marriage, Glen is the one who handles the things like dead trees laying in the driveway. Of course I would love for him to hire someone to do it but that's not up to me. It's not an inexpensive service to pay for and he may want to do it himself, more for the fact that he can rather than any other reason and and I will let him make the decision.

I think I might make some sweet and sour tofu tonight to change things up. I'm pressing the tofu, I've found a recipe, and now I'm going to go chop up some vegetables.

Glen chops up trees, I chop up onions and peppers.

This is what works for us. Y'all do what works for you.

Love...Ms. Moon

  2. Oh, Ms. Moon, the thrifting Gods really were looking out for you! I have Fiesta Ware envy. It reminds me of the Ikea? ad where the woman comes fast walking, almost running out of the store where she thought she got such a great deal. “Harold, start the car! Start the car, Harold!”. Congratulations!

    1. That sounds like a funny ad! We don't have an Ikea around here so we don't get their ads either. We have to go to Jacksonville or Tampa.

  3. We had an induction hob at our rental house in Berkshire and it came with a special mental plate that you could put on the hob - onto which you could then place any kind of pan.

  4. Wow, what a fab Fiesta Ware score! You were in exactly the right place at the right time!

  5. What a find! I love Fiesta ware. And..... after you told us about the muslin blanket the other day I ordered one and got it Monday. It's the perfect summer cover I've been searching for since forever. I didn't know before this that they even made muslin blankets. Yay!

    1. They've been making muslin blankets for babies for quite awhile now and I suppose some genius thought, "Well, hell. Grown-ups like soft covers too!" Did you get the same brand I got?

    2. I think a different brand, mine was delivered by that van with the swoosh on the side.

  6. Those dishes are amazing! I have that kind of stove top and use cast iron pans and copper bottom pots. I wonder if my copper makes me a rule breaker?

  7. I found a knockoff le Crueset dutch oven for $8.00 at Goodwill. It was stained inside but I didn't care. But guess what? It got too heavy for me to lift, even empty. Buying those dishes for the house you didn't want is your love language. Also, SCORE!

    1. I really do not believe in "signs" or messages from the universe but if I did, I would have taken that find as a little whisper in my ear that I need to work harder at helping do my part at the cabin. Or, alternatively, the whisper could have said, "You've done your part, honey. Relax."

  8. Cheerful fiesta ware. That was a great find.
About the downer tree -- as they say, you do you! Me, I'd hang sooner than leave it, but my partnership was quite different.

We all have different relationships with our partners, don't we? I guess it's our own special dances. I think you are much more of a take-charge woman that I am and I wish I were more like you.

  9. I love that we all make our own decisions and they may be nothing like what someone else approves of, or gets. We are all different. And we can be different, which is lovely. And I love that fiesta ware. I was at Goodwill yesterday and found some stuff that I am so glad I snatched up for a certain occasion, so I get the excitement of treasure-hunting. Goodwill has gotten more expensive. I am also curious about induction stove tops and what you'll think of it (that is what it is, right?). -Nicol

Yes. It's an induction stove top. I'm interested to see how I like it too.

  10. Now see, that silvery, grayish green is exactly what I've been looking for. What company did you say you ordered it from? I got a similar one from the Company Store, I love the blanket but hate the color. I think what I ordered was Linen and I was hoping it was a neutral, sandy beige but NO it is that pinkish beige, kinda like the color of a band-aid, which I hate! Would love that color though.
Man, you lucked up on the Fiesta Ware. So beautiful! Will look amazing at the cabin. Definitely your lucky day. Maybe you should've bought a lottery ticket too!

    1. Oh yes, Elizabeth. They made the muslin blankets for babies for a long time, especially for swaddling so you know they're very soft.

  14. Induction stoves are terrific . However you have to get induction cookware which we did having changed from gas. I don’t do the cooking in the family but even I was able to teach myself how it works. We were told that our crueset pot was a no no so someone was gifted all our old pots and pans as well as that magnificent pot . It is lovely to have this cooktop so easy to clean

    1. Everything I've read says that Le Creuset is fine for induction stove tops. I hope you didn't give yours away for no reason!

    2. Bad advice I think. You can put a silicone mat under them I have read. All the pots and pans including the cru went to a refugee family from El Salvador now living in Adelaide. What they don’t want goes to another refugee family . Our extended family all support them . Some of their family live in Arizona, though, one Mum has has been deported because of idiot face and has had to leave the kids and hubby behind..Disgusting man!

  15. You certainly are lucky when it comes to thrift shop bargains. Those dishes are beautiful! Shame about the bedspread colour not being quite right though. I've had the same with bedsheets that were supposed to be blue but are more towards grey. I can't see them in the dark so it's no big deal.

    1. This is true about sheets and I've often thought the same thing- can't see 'em in the dark! But I'm using this as a bedspread and that I can see all day.

  16. We bought an induction cooktop in Fuengirola. Since we both prefer gas (when I deign to cook) induction was great because it does heat up and turn off like gas. Our complaint was we could only use magnetic cookware. We had Calphalon and had to buy a new set of pats of pans. Also, with ours, we could only use certain sized pans on certain rings. That may not be a problem on yours. I love the color of the spread. It’s so difficult to choose colors from photographs online. The dishes are wonderful and what a deal.

    1. Same-same with using the right sized pots. Lots of rules, aren't there? I am discovering that there is a thing called an induction interference disk that you can put over the cook top making any pot usable on the induction stove top. Hurray!
Colors online are chancy, aren't they?
Those dishes really were a deal. And Glen is so happy with them.

  17. Good score on the fiesta ware - I like the colour of that blanket but of course, we are all different creatures and that is what makes the world a far more interesting place. I am catching up on a few days and EXHAUSTED over your week thus far.

    1. I like the color of that spread fine but I'm very weird about the colors in my own bedroom. They must be within a certain color range that even I can't identify for sure but I know it when I see it.
I've done a few things week for sure.

  18. What a buy on the dishes. I have that same Fiesta Ware in green, orange, yellow, and purple. I love my colorful table! I have an induction stove and had to buy new cookware to accompany the Le Creuset pieces.

    1. My problem is, I'm not moving my Le Creuset cookware to the cabin. Oh hell no. And buying new would cost as much as the stove did! But I do love that stuff.

  19. My mother hated Fiesta Ware. It was cheap back in the 1940s, and all my parents could afford when they married. My sister had a stack of colorful small dishes like those, she used for feeding the cat. When she died a few years ago, my nephew took the cat but only a few dishes (limited carry on for flight ). I took the rest (6) for my cat. I'd never paid any attention, but soon noticed they're authentic fiesta ware. My cat eats off better dishes than I do! They're very cheerful and I like them, but these belong to the cat.

    1. Isn't it funny- vintage Fiesta Ware is very valuable now but I don't think you're supposed to use it to eat from as it contains lead and uranium oxide. Supposedly the risk is less if there are no chips and cracks. I doubt your cat will be affected.

    2. Oh they aren't that old. Late 1970s or 80s. And no chips.

  20. In our house the unspoken contract seems to be that I make all phone calls for repairs, because if I left it to my hubby, we would be dead before he made a call. Sigh. Our roof is missing a couple of shingles, has been for about a month now, he said he would call someone. Has he? No. It's on my list for today.
Those dishes are gorgeous! Now I want new dishes:)

Living on 6 acres of forested land, my tree guy is on speed dial and that tree would be gone within a day or two. I keep the woodchips for garden and woodland pathways.
