Man. Memories can definitely be off. Here's the text exchange Hank and I just had.
Okay. That's a bit messy but there you have Hank's memory of the event and I am sure that is the correct one.
"Hugs From Random Queers" would be a great name for novel, a memoir, or even a poem, don't you think?

Love your Hank. — Jenn
ReplyDeleteMe too!
DeleteI would read any novel called "Hugs From Random Queers" or "Dykely Dykes" in a heartbeat!
ReplyDeleteAnd Hank could write them. He's a very good writer. Perhaps one day he will.
DeleteIt would be a great title for a travel novel, someone wandering the globe.
ReplyDeleteAnd getting hugs from random queers!
DeleteHank does indeed ROCK. I just watched the episode and have decided more firmly than ever that Oprah does not. The mental and emotional midgets sitting too close to our Hank made me want to do a murder. Oprah did not slap them silly , missed op. Hank held his own very well, though not given enough of the mike. Respect for Hank, none for Oprah- 1994 - the mug - such a cheap "thank you".
ReplyDeleteI hope the hotel made up for it.
Hugs from random queers is a thing in Bellingham, Always.
DeleteI had no idea you could still find it online. I'll have to do that and watch it again!
DeleteI wasn't that impressed with Oprah on that one either.
Oooh can you post a link? - VT Sarah
DeleteI only just saw yesterday's post. How exciting for Hank to be on Oprah (and what a brave young man he is)!
ReplyDeleteHe has always been exactly who he is from the moment of his birth. And he has always been brave, too.
DeleteYes, hugs from random queers is a great title. Glad Hank straightened things out (in his way).
ReplyDeleteHank has done his bit in many, many ways. Just being out as a trans man has probably helped more people than he knows.
DeleteHad to go read the post about Oprah, Hank and May, and again comment that you're a great supportive Mom!
ReplyDeleteWhat else can a mama be? I always wanted my kids to feel comfortable in their own being. And I think they mostly do.
Delete"Hugs From Random Queers" would definitely be a memoir in my case!
ReplyDeleteHeh-heh.
DeleteI think it would be an excellent Name for a Blog Post too.
ReplyDeleteYou're right!
DeleteThis is making me wish Hank had a blog!
ReplyDeleteBoth he and May are writers and have had blogs at one time or another. Hank is the person who convinced me to start blogging and I am so grateful he did. And you know how my kids are the bosses of me.
DeleteI wish I could find Hank's episode so I could watch it. Hurray for Hank!
ReplyDeleteYeah. I need to figure that out.
DeleteI found it, Mary! It's on VIMEO. Wonderful poise Hank showed in facing those loud-mouthed high school boys.

Hilarious - I frequently discover that something I remember with crystal clarity is not at all what other people who were there recall. This of course means they are WRONG.
ReplyDeleteCeci
Haha, Ceci! In this case, I'm pretty sure we can trust Hank's version of the event.
DeleteI tittered xx
ReplyDeleteI'd love to know what made you laugh.
DeleteI find it always pays to have a better memory than those around me! Great story and I am very sad that anyone made your childrens' lives in any way miserable.
ReplyDeleteWell, as you know, everyone has to go through stuff. Some stuff harder than others. As parents, I don't think we can usually prevent much of it but we can be there when it happens.
DeleteIt was so nice to see Hank. He stayed very calm in the face of attacks of those narrow minded little pricks. So much fucking hatred. It makes me sick and I'm so sorry he had to go through that.
ReplyDeleteWhere are so little pricks today?
