Still blue. Not desperately so. Not the kind where there is no hope, no memory of things not being hopeless. That does happen and that is the worst sort of black dog depression where there is no hope, no meaning, no purpose, no reason to get out of bed except that it must be done and the act of getting up is an act of huge achievement.
It hasn't been like that although I did stay in bed a long time this morning. Why not?
Glen left around four, I think. He kissed me good-bye, told me he loved me. I told him I loved him and to be safe, be safe, be safe. He is safe in Nashville now. Tomorrow the flight to Canada and I hope it's an easy, smooth one.
Jessie and her family are in Santa Rosa Beach, along with some friends of theirs. An old friend of Vergil's has a house in Santa Rosa. and he has invited them to use the house. This is their second trip there. It's not right on the beach, but close, and there's a pool at the house and it's an easy walk to the water. Santa Rosa is a gorgeous pure-white sand beach on the Gulf (of Mexico) and there is plenty to do, and even more in the nearby Panama City Beach which used to be fondly called The Redneck Riviera and may still be for all I know. Our family used to take weekend trips there and at that time, you could still find funky old places to stay right on the beach for not a lot of money. One place we stayed had been built of lumber brought in by sea as there were no overland direct routes. I will always remember that place fondly. It smelled of old wood and mildew and ocean air and ancient curtains. I am sure it's gone now, a giant condo probably now in its place.
It was a complete tourist town and in case the beautiful beaches and local seafood weren't enough for your visiting pleasure, there was the Miracle Strip Amusement Park.
We visited quite frequently in winter though, and almost everything was shut up. Even the McDonald's closed. We carried on. I think one of Hank and May's favorite things was the diner where we ate breakfast where they could get a heart-shaped waffle with whipped cream and strawberries on it. Instead of going to amusement parks, we played on the beach and got in the water if it was warm enough and of course, fishing was involved.
It's good to know that PC hasn't lost it's funky charm entirely.
I let this day go by as it would.
"Just wait until RFK, Jr. is the Secretary of Health and Human Resources," he said. The thought had never crossed my mind.
Haha!
There's one very, very small positive possibility which has occurred to me recently. We all know that Trump's health is not good. We've seen the pictures, we've seen and heard the videos. Now we all know that Trump is only the puppet the puppet masters are using to forward their agenda. The men who authored the 2025 project. And of course, Vladimir Putin. But if Trump should die and JD Vance become president, I honestly believe many of the diehards in the Trump cult will lose interest in supporting what's going on. Especially the things that will affect them, which already ARE affecting them. Trump is their bully-hero. Their big, tall strongman daddy. The figurehead who allows and encourages their racist, misogynist, anti-science (which they do not understand at all), anti-woke (which they couldn't define with a dictionary in their laps), anti-queer, anti-trans, anti-education, anti-arts, anti-human rights, anti-everything-that-represents-civilization will be replaced by a guy who appears to be more bot than human, who has the charisma of a bucket of manure without the usefulness, and I just don't think he's going to have what it takes to keep the faithful engaged. And I also think it's possible that whatever hold Trump has on the Republican lawmakers will be loosened if he's gone and some of them will actually look in the mirror and wonder why the hell they've sold out the Constitution not to mention their very souls.
This is my hope. But I could be wrong.
First, I think you make some very valid points in your final paragraph, points that have fractionally lightened my paranoia load.
ReplyDeleteSecond, I was conceived in Panama City. My parents were married partway through my father’s training as a B-17 pilot. Their honeymoon was the time it took them to drive (he wasn’t supposed to have a wife or a car) from New York State to Panama City. Dad was supposed to live on base. Panama City was a Navy town and he was in what was then the Army Air Corps; there weren’t many rooms in the inn. They found a room for Mom in a seedy hotel and he would sneak off base to be with her when he could. Glowing reports were written home and so the family wanted to send my grandmother to stay with them while she recuperated from a bad case of pneumonia (it was winter) resulting in much creative lying. Somewhat ironic that I, a confirmed New Englander, have wound up back on (actually in) the Gulf of Mexico.
It’s me, Margaret.
ReplyDeleteThat's such a great love story! I hope your parents got to spend at least some time at the beach together. It is such a beautiful beach and I'm sure then it was even more so. I bet that little place we used to stay in was right there.
DeleteYou have every right to preserve your privacy but I would love to know what part of the Gulf you live IN. On. Whatever. An island, right?
Galveston. Very much an island, near Texas as we like to say. And after a couple of months they went to McDill in Tampa and rented a cute little guest house on an estate where they had use of the pool and other amenities. I have lots of pictures of them on Florida beaches and around that pool. And when they moved they had my grandmother come visit. M
DeleteHurray! They did get to enjoy Florida on a bit of a different level but I bet that those times in the seedy motel are among their best memories. I mean- young love! At least, I hope so.
DeleteGalveston. That makes sense.
Yes you do know "shit" Mary and it is interesting to read your thoughts on what might happen if Vance tries to replace Trump. I hope you are right that at that point it could all easily fall apart and sanity might well begin to creep back. This nasty, destructive campaign that Trump is on is so un-American.
ReplyDeleteIt's not just un-American, it's inhumane and evil.

DeleteI can't tell you how many days I've had to just "let go by as it would."
ReplyDeleteI actually had a pharmacist try to talk me out of getting a Covid shot last week and had to insist I wanted the "old-last-year-one" because of an upcoming trip and wanted some protection. I mean, huh? A pharmacist? Maybe I'm stupid, but it's been a year and I thought a little boost, even if it's not the current variant going around, I'd like some little boost. He told me that if, "you were my mother, I'd tell you to wait." OK, then I dug my heels in-in what professional Walgreen's world is bringing up a mother a reason to tell someone not to get a vaccine. Anyway, there's more to it, but wtf. I will get the new shot in two months, which is what I was informed was OK to do. I have some qualifications. What a f'ing mess.
Vance is scarier than Trump, in my mind. He's smarter, but yes, he's robot-like. He's vying his time. -Nicol
OH, yes, I got the last year's one. I'll get the one coming out next in a few months too. -Nicol
DeleteAll my friends in the USA tell me that too, that Vance will be worse than Trump as he is smarter
DeleteNicol- that was totally unprofessional of that pharmacist and what a jerk. A guy I know just got Covid for the FIRST TIME a week ago in Tampa. So did the friend he was with. It's still out there for sure.
DeleteYour story saying that if you were HIS mother...blah, blah, blah...reminds me of a good friend of mine who was getting a consult about getting a surgery. She asked the doctor if she would advise her mother to get it if she were in her shoes. The doctor said, "I don't play that game." Gotta respect that.
J- Of course Couch Fucker is smarter but I don't think Trump's minions give a damn about him. And it's the other people calling the shots behind the curtains that are making the puppet speak. If the people don't like the puppet, his words are not going to be as influential. I HOPE.
I hope you're right! He's totally a puppet and useful -idiot-Putin-tool, and I hope Vance is too underwhelming when it all comes down to it, and it plays out how you're thinking. I hope you're right.
DeleteThank you for confirming what I thought about the pharmacist. I respect your friend's doctor for not playing games like that. COVID is totally going around again in certain places and I do not want to get it for the first time either! -Nicol
Trying again! I had the conversation this week about whether we would be better off with Vance if something ?!! should happen to Trump. I think yes.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Vance has even close to the "star power" that Trump has.
That mysterious power that blinds people to the obvious.
I totally agree. And I hope we're both right.
DeleteI've just listened to Niel Young's "Big Crime" new song about crime in the white house. Good. (Tho I think " Ohio" is better.) I go in and out of depression, rage and general apathy at Americans for voting this psychotic gang in. I'm glad you're ok. So am I.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard the song yet. I should listen to it. "Ohio" was indeed an anthem for our time, wasn't it?
DeleteIt's a damn miracle we're not all using hard drugs to get through our days and nights.
I try to distract myself with the good people and positive things they do. Otherwise there is a constant monologue going on in my brain... trump will do anything to keep Epstein at bay. RFK Jr will halt medical funds and people will die. Children will not have enough to eat. Our country will never recover from these drastic cuts. On and on. It takes effort.
ReplyDeleteWell, I have to say that as depressing as it is, I do believe all the things your brain is telling you with the possible exception of our country's ability to recover. And people are already dying. And many more will.
DeleteMany people that voted for DT have lost their jobs and/or are finding costs escalating. Some are even disenfranchised.
ReplyDeleteJDV is a bit of an unknown. He's definitely smarter than DT and does not have the cult followers. If JDV suddenly had to replace DT, it is hard to know how closely he would follow in DT's footsteps.
Lots of unknowns.
God only knows what JD's inclinations would be. He certainly hasn't talked about them in any serious way. He's been too busy parroting Trump and kissing his ass to give us any thoughts of his own.
DeleteI hope you're right, and he dies soon. Not very nice, but probably one of the best things for the world. JD vance does not have charisma, maybe he left it on the couch:)
ReplyDeleteAnd you know what? It's okay to take a day to recharge, to not make plans, to have a day with your self, to take a nap ( I didn't figure this out, but I saw it on instagram and sent it to my daughter who works too hard and doesn't take care of her body the way she needs to). It's good advice. I'm feeling kinda down too, not sure why, but I'm sure all will be revealed:)
Sending hugs and love.
If JD had any charisma he wouldn't have had to fuck a couch.
DeleteThere are so, so many things that can affect our moods and our feelings. Sometimes you just can't really figure out exactly what's going on in the brain. Or at least I can't.
Good idea to just let a day unfold. I need to learn that.
ReplyDeleteIt's a lesson we would all benefit from learning, I think.
DeleteFor what it's worth, the deranged orange thing has not been seen in public since Tuesday. So there's that.
ReplyDeleteI was always taught to believe that if something is too good to be true, it's probably not. But, god, thank you for the encouragement. -Nicol
DeleteNah. He played golf yesterday. But I was hopeful for a minute there.
DeleteI like your hope and I hope it happens. Soon. I love all of today's pictures.
ReplyDeleteThank you, River.
DeleteWhy then did people vote for him? I often wonder why , in a democracy peoples vote for politicians who we know are stupid and self interested..
ReplyDeleteWhy did people follow Jim Jones into the jungle? Why do people spend millions of dollars in Scientology for the most insane "therapy" imaginable? Why did "The Secret" become a best-seller? Why do Catholics believe in transubstantiation? Why do people shell out big bucks for ridiculous "natural" treatments which have never been proven to do a damn thing?
DeleteI could go on for days. P.T. Barnum said it best, "There's a sucker born every minute." Humans just want to believe shit and have a massive capacity to believe it's the truth.
Your day was absolutely not wasted. Go easy on yourself. Interesting times.
ReplyDeleteWell, it wasn't totally wasted. I fed Maurice.
DeleteI hope you’re right about Drumpf’s imminent doom and Vance’s lack of support. I’ve been thinking the same thing (so I hope we’re both right). Looks like the fam is having fun.
ReplyDeleteI hope with all my heart we're both right and I also hope with all my heart we get the chance to find out sooner rather than later.
DeleteI think the fam was having fun. I haven't heard the latest report though.
It's funny -- Jesse, Jennifer and I were talking about that very thing (Trump and his potential successors) last night. We don't see Vance carrying the same hypnotic hold over the party, and I think you're right -- I think many of the MAGAts will simply fall away and lose interest in politics without their realty-TV hero at the helm.
ReplyDeleteThat second picture of Levin is hilarious. I love the way we can see only half his face, and yes, his Crocs.
I don't think I've ever been to the "Redneck Riviera." In fact, now that I think about it, I don't think I've been to a Florida beach anywhere west of Cedar Key.
Aw man. I thought I was the only one who came up with this theory.
DeleteNaw. Not really. But it is interesting that we are all thinking the same thoughts. Great minds?
I think that picture is adorable. I want Jessie to show it to all his girlfriends when he gets older.
Steve! There are some unbelievably beautiful beaches over that way! You and Dave should make a visit sometime. Rent a place at one of the fancy beaches. Rub elbows with the wearers of pink polo shirts, madras shorts, and deck shoes!
Good to know that funk is still alive and well if only just barely. And I've been thinking about that very thing. I commented on somebody's blog recently, don't remember which, that I think it might fall apart quickly without Trump. The people running the government, like Miller and Vaughn, are only getting their agenda done because Trump lets them. I think they picked Vance because they can control him but Vance does not have control over the MAGAts or the party in general. He's unlikable, no charisma, just the puppet waiting in the wings. The guy has been on vacation ever since the election. What has he actually done as VP? So, yeah, I think at least some of the moderate republicans will begin to come to their senses. I hope.
ReplyDeleteVought, not Vaughn.
DeleteExactly. I can't see JD making great headway with the masses. But if there's one thing we've learned in the last eight months, it's that you just never ever know what's going to happen.
DeleteI share your hope that Vance won't have the support trump has. I also share your hope we find out soon.
ReplyDeleteI think it's hysterical that Trump just randomly said that he doubts he'll go to heaven even though he' like to.
DeleteThat picture of the amusement park sure reminds me of Riverview Amusement Park in Chicago. We went there for our 8th grade class trip and I screamed and screamed on the rides! The park is gone now but I've never been comfortable on roller coasters or scary rides. Luckily, I don't have to go on ANY now! :)
ReplyDeleteI do not like roller coasters either. God no. I do love a good merry-go-round and a ferris wheel is nice.
DeleteHope you feel better today and onwards. Appreciate the vacation pictures - I am supposed to be planning a trip for early in the new year someplace warm but accessible by plane/rental car. Hate to spend money in certain states given the politics of leadership but of course the people who live there still have to put food on the table etc.
ReplyDeleteCheers,, Ceci
Yes. While I completely understand why people would want to boycott Florida which I support, it's also important to remember that a whole lot of people live here who are not Magats, who can't stand our governor, and who believe in human rights and freedom. And a lot of those people do earn their livings on tourism, one way or another.
DeleteMebbe your feeling Down is that everyone else is doing something enjoyable and you're missing them, and the doing of something enjoyable with them, which is always uplifting? But, glad you haven't bottomed out. A lot of us have been feeling melancholy and your last paragraphs have said a lot about the Why, and that getting that Orange Menace out of the way may be Hope sprung eternal? I think you are Right, the Cultish ones will lose interest when their Cult Leader is replaced with one a whole lot less charismatic to them and JD is not a likeable Human at all, so I can't see him developing much of a "Following"... and if you're Leading and nobody is Following you're just taking a Walk.
ReplyDeleteAnd Vance can take a long walk on a short pier.
DeleteI am pretty sure I'm okay with being home. I've had my fun times over the years.
