Adventures In Cabin Supply Shopping

When I got up this morning, the temperature had not even climbed above seventy degrees and the humidity was way less than it has been. This is almost unheard of in August here. And it's been cooler with lower humidity all day which is lovely, but it's also confusing.
I don't know about you but I seem to have an internal calendar which works in response to temperature and air-feel and it's all out of whack today. I'm having fall-ish feelings instead of the feelings I generally have this time of year when the weather is the most hellish it gets all summer. I'm feeling like I should start looking for the first camellia blossoms and should definitely be getting the fall garden in and isn't it time for Glen to go hunting?

Well, that part is true. He is leaving on Saturday to drive to Nashville where he's getting a plane to Canada to go hunt some animal and I think he'll be gone for about a week. This is all good except the timing is lousy because the pain in my side is, I am sure, a kidney stone and if it's one of the smaller ones making a play for escape via the ureter, true hell on earth could very well begin and if that does happen, a trip to the ER is absolutely required because, as I always point out, that is where they have the drugs. Also, of course, methods of blasting the stone if it gets stuck but that requires a procedure they do in a surgical unit so it's not going to happen immediately by any means.
But the point is, if Glen is gone I'll have to call one of the children or all of the children to get a ride and invariably this sort of event always happens around 2 a.m.

Shit. Why does this always seem to happen? I would say it's all psychosomatic but it's not. It just is not. My mind is not that powerful.

Moving on.
The man and I had a day date today. He had errands to run in town and I suggested that we go to the restaurant supply place to pick up some things we'll need in the kitchen at the cabin. We've been planning on doing this. And maybe get lunch? He said that would be great and also, he wanted me to go look at tile with him for the bathroom and perhaps a kitchen backsplash and perhaps a floor for the kitchen too.
We really have no idea what we want and the only thing we know for sure is the color of the bathroom sink. Colors.
I actually felt the tiniest bit pretty today, in an old lady way. It has been years since I have looked in a mirror except in the most necessary of circumstances but I am peeking more and more. I have not wanted to see either face or body which I know is incredibly sad but there you have it. I put on one of my favorite dresses which, although is quite loose now, is not absurdly too large, and also my great grandmother's baby natural pearls.
And flip flops. But my best flip flops.
It turned out that the world did not notice or care at all but that was okay. I knew I had made an effort.

We started at the restaurant supply store and got a spatula, two knives, a knife sharpener, a salt and pepper shaker with snappy little lids like they have on the counter at diners, and probably some other stuff I don't remember. I know their knives are probably not the best but I have a knife that I bought there years ago and I use it all the time and it is a fine knife. It keeps an edge and I can sharpen it up if need be. I am picky about knives but I am not a snob about them. I am fairly certain I am not going to be a contestant on Top Chef anytime soon. Is that show still on?

Then we went and had lunch at the place where I always get the ahi tuna salad which is so good that I have never once been tempted to get anything else.
We stopped at Goodwill because it was between us and the tile place but I do believe I have used up every drop of my thrifting luck and karma in buying the Fiesta Ware so I found nothing I wanted at all. Glen bought a belt.

On to the tile place. SO many tiles, so little idea what in hell we want. The woman who was trying to help us only annoyed me because we really did not know what we wanted so it wasn't like I could tell her what we were looking for. Even remotely. We finally made it clear, as gracefully as possible, that we really wanted to just look and gather ideas. And we did. And while we were doing that, we started talking about some border or trim tiles that I'd bought almost thirty years ago because I loved them and they were on cheap, cheap sale. We don't have many of them but...could they be used? They were definitely green, although were they greens that would go with the sink's greens? We took a few pictures of things we liked and decided to come home, check out the border tiles I'd stashed away, and see if we thought we could incorporate those into whatever we decide to go with.

Hmmm...
The turtle tiles definitely go with the sink but we're not so sure about the wave tiles. I was afraid I would not still love them after all these years and my countless changes in attitudes.
But I do. I love them.

So, well, maybe. We don't really have enough to do much of a border, like, say, above the shower, but if we interspersed them with different tiles of the same width, we could make them do.
We'll see. There were no huge disagreements as we shopped, no cross words were exchanged. I did point out, after he asked if he was going to get any say in this, that he was the one who bought a log cabin in which I had little say.
He was not amused. I am not sure how long I'm going to be able to use that line but I'm going to keep using it whether it works or not.
Because it IS true.

And that's our life as it happened on a cool Tuesday in late August. It was a fine day date and when I came home I did indeed pick field peas. As you can see in the picture above.

Oh! I must share this. When we were at Goodwill, I saw a Seminole jacket which had been craft-decorated with black sequins. When I say "Seminole" jacket, I don't mean a jacket like a person from the Seminole nation would wear, I mean a jacket like an FSU football fan would wear.

For your viewing pleasure.

It is so sad when crafting goes awry. And I should point out that the jacket was at Goodwill so someone had some taste. Or, at least sense. I don't know. I would sort of love to hear that story, though. Do you think someone's G-Maw stitched those sequins on the jacket to give as a gift to a proud FSU grandchild? And that as soon as the G-Maw was in the grave, the jacket went to Goodwill? Or did some woman do this on her own, thinking she'd be the belle of the game and then realizing that no, actually, people were looking away when she wore it and whispering behind their hands to each other?
We'll never know. But someone did really try. And that's what matters.
Bless their heart.

Bless ours too.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Well I hope the Canadian animals have been warned that American hunters are coming so that they can run away or hide. The turtle border tile looks great. I hate it when shop assistants get too attentive - without being asked. "Can I help you?"... "Yeah, **** off!"

    1. Just one American hunter, I suppose. The rest are Canadians.
That assistant, in particular, was most interested in showing us their most expensive choices.

  2. Sounds as if things are a little tense right now. Maybe that hunting trip is good timing.
I wonder if the bedazzled jacket was revenge crafting.

    2. No. Not tense. Glen and I clash every time we have to make a choice which involves decor. His taste is about a 180 from mine. And he'll try so hard to find something he's sure I'll like and he almost never, ever gets close. But the important thing is that we recognize we're different and go on from there.
      Ooh. Revenge crafting!

  3. What is Glen hunting for?
It was so damned hot here today, 33C (91F). This afternoon I took Jack to the spray park and I sat in the shade and read. This morning he helped me clean an area rug out on the deck. It'll be hot enough for the next week for it to dry well.
As for the tiles, I'm going to stay out of it. The cabin itself is obviously still a sore spot.
Speaking of sore, I hope that stone passes sooner rather than later. Your four kids are close by, and I'm sure they've got you covered.

    1. Pixie, I know he's told me but I always instantly forget these things. In all he's making three trips up your way before Christmas and I think that elk, deer, and ducks are the game they seek.
I sure hope it cools down for you.
I really hope the stone doesn't pass but just backs up to where it doesn't hurt any more. I don't understand how this works.

  4. Well, sounds like a lovely date day and sounds like you felt cute. :-) Best flip flops are for a special occasion. Thrifting-magic doesn't happen every time. Any thrifter knows one can't expect to find gold every time! :D You clearly understand that, as you mentioned it. Hopefully you do not have to go to the hospital while your sweet man is gone. What an icky pain to deal with-kidney stones. I sincerely hope that does not happen. -Nicol

    1. If I prayed, I would pray that I didn't have to go to the hospital while he's gone. I'm serious.

  5. I love your turtle tile and the white wave tile. They work well with the floral sink which I think should be the showpiece of the bathroom.
The beaded jacket took lots of time and effort.
A friend that could design and tailor beautifully used to add a single ribbon border to A-line, empire, and shift dresses. Most of her dresses were impeccable.
There is a fine line between beautiful and simply bizarre.

    1. Someone DID spend a lot of time sewing on those sequins and I recognize that and yet still wonder why they did it.
There is a fine line between those two things.

  6. Remember that gawdawful crafting trend a few years back of jazzing up clothes by putting rhinestones and sequins on them? It was called "bedazzling," if memory serves. Perhaps that's the origin story of the Seminole jacket and someone finally realized that the bedazzled look was Over With A Capital O.

    1. I think most bedazzling was done with the rhinestones. But I'm not sure. I certainly do remember it. Bedazzling had its day.

  7. All in all, a good day date and a nice lunch. Perhaps take a photo of the sink with you next time so you can see which colours would work with it.

    1. Well, we had a photo but it's just about impossible to compare an actual color in your hand to the color of something in a photo. At least for us.

  8. Have I toldyou lately how much I enjoy you’re writing and truly like and respect you? I just read this post as I often do to SG. He wonders how long you’ll get away with the cabin comments to Mr. Moon. And we both love those tiles.

    1. As you and your husband know, eventually, words are not necessary and a simple look will do. I'll adopt that (I already have the look) when I feel the words have gone on long enough.
You have no idea how much your words mean to me. Thank you, dear, newish friend. And please tell SG that it pleases me to know that he's allowing you to share. Does he roll his eyes, though?

  9. I'm with you, he had his say when he bought the cabin. Marc had absolutely o interest in picking the tile, or anything, when both bathrooms got remodeled. Each time I would go to the tile store several times, getting samples of tile I liked and playing around with arrangements, doing sketches until I finally decided. When the big bathroom was getting done the lady at the tile store kept trying to tell me what I wanted because she was a design professional. When I wanted a darker grout for the little border tiles she kept telling me I wouldn't like it. I did it anyway and I love it.

I love the turtle tiles and the wave tiles and yeah, they both go together and with the sink I think. Anything you like goes together as far as I'm concerned. But when you use the wave tiles, my brain keeps telling me it's upside down in the picture.

    1. You're right. The waves were definitely upside down. I thought they were but just didn't bother to turn them around. I was mostly concentrating on the colors.
Did you appreciate that you had full reign when it came to picking out tiles and other things for your bathrooms or did you sort of wish you had some input? I suspect the former. I'd hate to be the one to choose and then pick out something that Glen hated and had to live with until death do us part but honestly- it's just a bathroom.

  10. I'm hearing some stress between you and Mr. Moon. It's that cabin, of course, but you are trying and he is trying so I hope you guys can reach a compromise with that place so you both can somehow enjoy it together.
I like the tiles and hope you can use them but I agree with Ellen - the wave tile is upside down in the photo. ;)
Hope that kidney stone leaves you alone.

    1. No. Honestly we're not stressing at all. We're just trying to figure out what we want which is not easy. And of course our tastes differ vastly.

  11. I've seen kitchen back splashes nicely done with featured tiles - it can be good looking. The FSU bespangled jacket gave me a laugh, with several family members alumns from there...and the wonderful world of Good Will has my favorite word (which of course never refers to anything I purchase) "tacky!"

    1. I do love a kitchen tile backsplash but I would be fine with a stainless steel one too but it would be a way to incorporate some color.
There are plenty of tacky items at Goodwill. Their numbers are infinite! But once in a while...
Which is why we go back.

  12. I'm a person who invents little stories to go with some of the strange crafted things that I see at Goodwill. Sometimes the work is so awful that I try to decide whether it has been done by a child or an adult. Sometimes, the craftwork is so perfectly done that it breaks your heart a little to see all the time and work put in on something, just to wind up put into a donation box.

    1. Oh, Debby! We are the same in this!
I have literally bought some things I did not want because they were so beautifully made. And yes, I make up stories too but they all seem to end sadly as the items are there at a thrift store, being pawed through like the factory made stuff with as little regard by most people.

  13. Hope the damn kidney stone leaves you alone.
Both tiles look nice but to my eye - maybe due to the image quality - there could be some cleaning of concoluted corners involved in the long run.

    1. I need some education about kidney stones. I've tried to talk to my urologist and have asked him questions that he didn't really answer to my satisfaction. I'd change doctors but hey- at least I have one! It's so frustrating.
You could be very right about the corners in the tiles. I think with a large, soft-ish brush it might be not so hard to clean them.

  14. I'm thinking someone ornamented that jacket for herself (presumably a her, unless it was Liberace, and I can't see him going to a 'Noles game). You HAVE to use those amazing border tiles! If not now, when? I had the same reaction as Ellen, though -- that the waves might be upside down.

    1. Yes. The waves were upside down. Sigh.
Liberace! Oh, Steve. You made me laugh. I can't imagine him going to a football game, can you? Well, maybe for the tight ends.
I think we'll find a way to use the tiles.

    2. Well, I wouldn't wear it, that's for sure! *LOL* But, it would be so hard to hurt the Feelings of whoever Gifted it and did handwork they might be Proud of and not realize what a White Elephant Gift this would be!!!

  16. Oh no. It reminds me of a hobbytex t-shirt from the late 1970s that I had on my style-deficient 9 year old head that didn't translate onto the virgin white cloth. I am still sad about that.
Turtles are very featured things in the area that I come from.
