Walking day 2.
My route this morning was simply up the sidewalk to the county line and back. That's a two mile walk. It's not a lot but it ain't nothing, either. I did that route because I wanted to get a closer look at a yard that's just before the county line. This yard has intrigued me for all these twenty years because of the amount of trash in the yard. I simply could not understand how one small patch of ground could be so completely and utterly filled with every sort of trash you could imagine. Like...how did they even arrange it so that it was so dense while being so spread out? I can't even begin to describe the types of things that were lying in that yard. Just unbelievable amounts of detritus ranging from machine parts to old plumbing parts to buckets of something to bags of who-knows-what?
But I'd noticed, driving by in the last few months, that at least half of the yard looks to have been somewhat cleaned up by someone. The house itself shouts poverty and I am honestly not judging here. I've seriously just been so curious about it. I've never once seen a person in the yard.
Walking by it today, I saw that yes, there is at least 75% less trash but the weeds and grass have grown up to great heights. Still...I can't help but wonder what the motivation was to get started with that project. They may have been ordered by the county to do it if the one adjoining neighbor had complained about rats or something.
Who knows?
Not me.
One more Lloyd mystery.
And here's another.
That is Harvey's property. That's what it has looked like since Harvey got put in jail last winter and I still do not know why.
Except that it's not exactly what it's looked like since then. Can you make out what looks like an arrangement of outdoor furniture in front of the trailer?
Now that is new.
And look at it- I mean, someone took the time to place it all as carefully as you might place it on your own patio.
And still no sign of Harvey.
I have absolutely no idea what's going on there.
I know people have often dropped off things at Harvey's place that he could possibly sell but not one thing since he's been incarcerated.
Yes. Lloyd is a curious and interesting place.
At least to me.
After my walk I did a few things around here and then met Jessie and Lily and all five of my grandchildren at the Wacissa and it was just a very, very sweet time. The temperature under the shade of the cypress tree where we set up camp was pretty perfect, especially with the breeze blowing off the river. All of the kids, except for Owen, spent almost the entire time in the water doing kid water things. Jessie had brought the two little kayaks which all the Weatherford/Moon kids used and then the other kids who were there all got turns paddling in them. It's that sort of place.
It was blissful. I only totally immersed once which is unusual but I was so comfortable, sitting in my chair in the shade, enjoying the breeze and the conversation with Lily and Jessie and Owen that I simply did not feel the need. We took picnic foods and enjoyed those but the kids didn't really even want to waste the time. They were just way too happy in that cold, cold water.
I stayed for a few hours and then started getting itchy to get home and finish up my cleaning the refrigerator and freezer project. The kids all gave me freezing cold hugs and Owen hauled all of my things up to my car for me. He's such a dear and loving grandson.
I did indeed get the freezer completely unloaded, cleaned, and reorganized. I discovered I have far more frozen corn and spinach than I had realized. I carried all of my blanched, bagged, and frozen field peas out to the garage freezer which made a lot more room. That felt good.
Then I hauled all the garbage from yesterday's refrigerator clean-out to the trash place and folded a bunch of laundry and I feel quite satisfied with myself.
Cleaning toilets may have been involved too.
Ooh Mary! You go girl!
And now I want to show you this.
Can you see the label? Can you see the beautiful embroidery?
That, my darlings, is a Johnny Was tee-shirt that Lily found at a Goodwill and bought for six dollars. And you know what? I don't think it had even ever been worn or washed. New, that shirt new would have sold for over a hundred dollars. And she found it on the rack outside the dressing room where people put what they've tried on and didn't want.
I have now given it its first wash and I can foresee wearing this beautiful thing for the rest of my life. It's not just a garment. It is a work of art.
The thrift store gods and goddesses were smiling on both Lily and her mama when she found that. I can hardly believe it.
Mr. Moon is still at the cabin. He was going to come home today but when he got up there last night he discovered the mower had a flat tire and he spent most of the day getting two new tires. By the time he got back to the place and started mowing, it began to rain.
So I'll see him tomorrow.
My plan for tomorrow is to try and get at least a few more things on my list checked off, the number one priority being the shelling, blanching, and freezing of the peas. Yay! More The Bear!
Guilt free.
What a good day it's been. I hope yours has been too.
Love...Ms. Moon

A most satisfying day - great scenery and even better company. I always associate water activities with the ocean - I wonder what it must be like to go swimming and not end up caked with salt!
ReplyDeleteThe top is divine. Please model it for us so we can see what it looks like on.
We are so lucky to have two oceans (Atlantic and Gulf) and many, many springs, lakes, and rivers here. Swimming in the spring fed river is a very, very refreshing thing to do.
DeleteI will take a picture of me in the top, I am sure.
That's a lovely top, what a snip. I had an excellent day too, thank you.
ReplyDeleteYes! We are the Thrift Store Ladies!
Deletethat tee shirt is lovely...and and very YOU. Funny,..I was thinking about Harvey today...especially since you began walking again..... you usually mention him if you see him, but i am assuming he is still incarcerated.....WHY? I have no idea .but...I thought about him so strongly past few days, so was interesting that you spoke of him. I hope he is ok... i cannot imagine that man, who seemed to be very eccentric, but harmless and with a good heart.....being incarcerated. I just cannot

I'm pretty sure Harvey is still in jail. I should ask my next door neighbor, the former sheriff who was somehow involved in Harvey's arrest, if he knows what's happening.
DeleteAs the neighbor I talked to who knew Harvey said, it must have been something pretty bad for him to still be in jail. I always thought of him as a harmless soul. He certainly never felt threatening to me at all. But I did hear he was off his meds and that can make for some weird changes in people.
What a beautiful shirt - your personal shopper does a great job! And the river scenes are idyllic. Congratulations on the freezer/fridge clean out - spinach and corn are delicious with practically everything except dessert and now that you know you have a good supply you can start experimenting. I'm worried about your neighbor - surely he isn't really in jail, perhaps some mental health issue got a lot worse and he needed treatment and sheltered housing? Or am I insanely optimistic?
ReplyDeleteCeci
Any mental health facility that Harvey would likely be in is probably neither very helpful in the therapeutic sense or in the comfort sense. I hate to say that but it's the truth. Sheltered housing? Again- possible, perhaps. But doubtful. I'm sorry.
DeleteThe shirt is incredible. What a find. How could anyone not have immediately snatched that up at the thrift shop! I’m so pleased YOU were productive.
ReplyDeleteI have indeed been Little Miss Get 'Er Done. I seem to have hit a speed bump though in crossing things off my list. So far, two down, four to go. Not exactly speeding my way through it, am I?
DeleteI love Lily's multi-coloured swimsuit. And is that Maggie without her mermaid tail? I guess it's too bulky for kayaking. That embroidered t-shirt is outstandingly gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteLily's bathing suit is awesome!
DeleteI asked Lily why Maggie wasn't "mermaided" and she said it's a big hassle to get that tail on. I can only imagine! And yes, it is a lot easier for her to wrastle with Gibson and play with August and Levon without her tail.
I could not love that shirt more!
That gorgeous t-shirt is a HUGE score!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Lily heard the angels singing when she laid eyes on it.
DeleteWhoever tried on that tee shirt and put it back left it there for you. I have to admit that brand is not familiar to me, but it's beautiful, and you will look beautiful wearing it. Lily, you rock!
ReplyDeleteJohnny Was is one of my favorite brands. If not THE favorite. Beautiful hippie-ish clothing with embroidery, extremely well made, often made of silk and/or velvet.
DeleteAnd expensive as all get-out.
The river sounds lovely. I love the sound of kids playing in the water.
ReplyDeleteThe t-shirt is beautiful and what a good deal. So satisfying.
Kids can definitely make some noise when they're playing in the water. Between splashing, yelling, and laughing, it's a noisy situation. But a happy one.
DeleteSomehow, I missed your post yesterday. Now you got me thinking about cleaning my fridge. Not today, tho.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to get out for walks more often too. I've been finding that mornings are the best time since it is cooler. Tuesday, I walked inside at a shopping mall and that worked too.
It's nice to see your gang at the river. Looks like you had the place to yourselves. You sound so happy, Mary!
"Not today, Satan!" Ha!
DeleteYes. It is so much cooler in the mornings. My mother used to mall walk. She enjoyed that.
There really weren't very many people at the river. I was surprised. It was nice.
What a gorgegous top! I love embroidery. I'd save it and use it for patches in the 70s. Oh your river looks so comforting for summer fun. Kudos on doing the freezer stuff! Enjoy the eating too!
ReplyDeleteThat brand is so well-crafted. It truly is.
DeleteIsn't that a pretty little piece of a river? Spring fed, of course. Cold and clear.
Yeah. I'm pretty proud of my refrigerator and freezer right now.
The shirt is beautiful - I have great peacock love. I also have great love for The Bear. It's inspired me to say "heard" when I have no other real response, ha! -Dayna
ReplyDeleteI can totally understand using "heard" in daily life. Better than "noted." When we were watching Reservation Dogs, I started using "skoden" which is what the kids on that show said instead of "let's go then." I sometimes still do.
DeleteThe river looks like the perfect place to be on a hot summer day.
ReplyDeleteThe kayaks provided good fun for all the kids. Bringing kayaks to the river was a smart move by Jessie.
The shirt was a lucky find and a real bargain at $6.
We can only hope Harvey is safe and being cared for. The outdoor furniture indicates someone may have taken over his property.
Beyond being a public health risk, a residential property filled with junk is an eyesore. As a neighbor, I would not want to look at and drive by such a mess.
Those kayaks are perfect for the kids. They've gotten a lot of use out of them. The boys have their own kayaks when they go out on the river with their mom and dad.
DeleteSometimes when I find something at a thrift store that good I feel like I've probably used up all of my thrift store luck but Lily obviously still has hers.
A lot of people drive by that yard but there's only one close neighbor. I'm sure he despairs over it.
That sounds like a great day, and you DID score with that shirt! (Or Lily did. I guess both of you did!)
ReplyDeleteI also suspected that the county may have ordered your neighbor to clean up that property. If so, there's probably a public record of the order -- if you care enough to look it up. Being an ex-reporter, I would. :)
I didn't realize Harvey is still in jail! It seems unusual to jail someone for months right off the bat, unless it's a serious charge. (Or unless he's already been adjudicated and he's now serving an older sentence that was never completed -- if he violated probation, for example.)
I'm sure I could look it up but you know I won't. I'll just wonder about it. I'm also sure I could find out about Harvey, too, but I haven't done that either. Like I said in another comment response, I could probably just ask my former-sheriff neighbor. I think he may have arrested Harvey at least once. Somehow, though, I just don't want to initiate a conversation with that guy. He sort of scares me although I'm sure that's silly.
DeleteYou could be right about violating probation but I'm not sure how he could even do that, living as he does with no vehicle and very little money. I assume.
You (and Lily) and Boud had major thriftie scores! Oh, that Wacissa water looks so refreshing compared to hot, smoky Idaho.
ReplyDeleteHarvey has been on my mind ever since he was taken to jail. I do hope he's receiving whatever help he needs, and not just rotting away in a cell.
Congratulations on first and second walks. I hope the weather is conducive for a third.
Chris from Boise
Chris, you would love that river. I think.
DeleteI seriously doubt Harvey's getting much help unless that simply means he's getting three meals a day on the county's dime. Even that would have to be an improvement.
The weather was fine this morning. After it quit raining.
