That, my friends, is a blue-tailed, five-lined skink. Skinks come in all shapes and sizes and especially colors and if I have a favorite, I guess it would be the blue-tailed because, well, obviously. I am loathe to admit this but skinks weird me out. They look so...slippery. And they are also more snake-like than our little anoles, some more so than others. But this one was sitting on the back porch steps this morning when I went out to feed the crows and I don't know what was going on but he didn't seem to be frightened of me in the least and let me take his picture.
There were big doin's in Lloyd today. Well, not really. But sort of. Glen and I went to the Baptist church to vote. This is the very large, white Baptist church which is a pretty boring place to vote. When the volunteer who manned the door opened it up for us I was somewhat shocked to take in the absolute, no doubt about it, smell of weed.
Strong.
I looked at the four volunteers, all of them white-headed and around our age and simply could not imagine one of them bring out a joint and asking if anyone wanted a toke. I mean, I know old people smoke reefer. Hell, it's legal here for medical purposes and anyone over the age of fifty is going to have medical issues that qualify you to walk into any of the many, many dispensaries and buy cannabis in a variety of forms, strains, and strengths.
Still.
But I let that one go and we voted and after we left I mentioned the odor to Glen who said, "Yeah. It was that guy who was in there voting when we got there."
Now. Why I had not realized that shows the mental deterioration I suffer from. The man of whom Glen spoke had been a younger guy with dreads. Okay! That made sense.
The volunteers told us it had been a pretty busy morning. "We've had 88 voters so far!" said one of the men. And honestly, that is a lot for little Lloyd. There are other voting locations too.
We stopped at the Post Office on the way home and lo and behold, all of the My Gypsy Soul Boutique signs and funky decor had disappeared and were replaced with this.
Well now. A farm shop sounds promising, does it not?
The "Rooted in faith" thing sounded a little, well, off-putting for me but fresh eggs, fresh produce, nursery plants? Count me in.
I looked them up when I got home and when they say rooted in faith, they ain't kidding.
Check them out.
Talk about being eat-up with Jesus.
And then there's this.
I'm sorry but, Jesus Christ.
Well, that's Lloyd.
Everyone who's tried to start a business in that tiny building seems to have had such high hopes and not a one of them has had any luck at all. There have been at least five that I know of. Perhaps the Jesus Farmers will finally break the curse.
And hey- they are also certified concrete paver installers so they have that going for them.
It amuses me that we've gone from crystals and sage and Tarot card readings to Brad, a family man of God, and his wife Meredith, who is whole heartedly committed to Jesus, her husband Brad, her children, and whatever business venture God has them take on next.
All right. Here was the big news from The Church of the Batshit Crazy today.
For the past few days, only four out of the five-member murder of crows have shown up. What you're seeing in that picture is the four crows of whom I speak, plus a squirrel which the crows don't seem to mind sharing their space with. They were all busy, gobbling up the birdseed and shelled sunflower seeds Mr. Moon had dumped off the bird feeder tray due to the fact it had all gotten wet. That did not seem to bother the squirrel or the crows at all.
I am not too disturbed about the missing crow. If my theory was correct, that fifth bird was a juvenile and if I am going to be all optimistic about this (and I am), I think he or she has found a mate and they're off doing whatever it is that new crow couples do. That makes perfect sense, doesn't it?
I got my arugula planted and watered in.
That little patch is all I think we need at this moment. It didn't take me but a few minutes to rake back the pine needle mulch and use my finger to make rows and plant the bitty baby seeds in. However, by the time I was done I literally had sweat running off of me. The greenery you see in that picture is the volunteer arugula I'm still using and a third generation volunteer zinnia sprout.
Because I'm insane and because I have a great need to tend to this yard, I tried to do a little work on the old kitchen garden but ended up working on the fence where the confederate jasmine grows, taking out a dang elder berry tree that escaped my notice before it got too big to just pull. I merely cut it but had to also cut a lot of the jasmine vines to release it from the fence.
And what does this accomplish?
Not a whole hell of a lot. That's what.
A very short trivia fact:
In the 1930's the Hays Code was adopted by the major studios in Hollywood as a sort of self-censoring body meant to protect the innocent and decent from any of that nasty Hollywood moral-destroying movie making. AND, as I quote from Wikipedia
"The first major instance of censorship under the Production Code involved the 1934 film, Tarzan and His Mate, in which brief nude scenes involving a body double for actress Mauren O'Sullivan were edited out of the master negative of the film."
And because I love you, I give you this.
And of course, it was after this that both Tarzan's and Jane's costumes became far less revealing and skimpy, to the detriment of all.
Maurice has discovered her throne.
Mr. Moon says this is exactly what he had envisioned when he saw the chair.
I am thinking about changing her name to "Lulu" in hopes that the reason she's so freaking mean is because she hates what we call her. I've been testing it out.
She still slashed me twice yesterday.
Sigh.
Look what has arrived!
Just in time for tomorrow's back-to-pottery class. I'm pretty excited.
Love...Ms. Moon

Sounds pretty exciting around there today.
ReplyDeleteEverything happened at once!
DeleteLloyd was definitely jumpin today. I think Maurice is thinking at last, the chair I deserve.
ReplyDeleteI believe you are right about Maurice.
DeleteThat jesus farm makes me want to go in there, slap them silly to see how many times they might turn the other cheek. I prefer the funk of the mid gypsy effort..
ReplyDeleteYour new T shirt is the shit! LOVE IT! Wearing that in florida is mighty brave! You have my full support and admiration, as usual! If any floridians mess with you over your stylish and true shirt , let me know...I will slap them silly as well. Feeling slappy this evening!
Maurice in "my" chair looks regal indeed! Chair is a treasure and Maurice is a ...cat.
The gypsy soul boutique had no chance. The merchandise was simply...ridiculous. Like NO ONE anywhere ever needed any of that stuff and the people in Lloyd REALLY didn't need any of that stuff.
DeleteI wore my shirt today and did not get shot. Or even verbally attacked. I think that your concept of what Florida is like may be a little over-the-top. Tallahassee always votes blue. I'm not saying we don't have Maggats or Confederate flags but I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as some other southern states. Of course it very much depends on where you live in the state. But I'm not the only non-racist, mostly non-asshole who lives here by any means.
Maurice has found a new place to be for sure.
After I read the Stillwater shit.....I nearly puked. These are the same motherfuckers (bangers like them) that have thrown me under the bus all my life.
ReplyDeleteMaurice is certainly in her well-deserved thrown. All bow down.
Love the T-shirt. I think it says it all. I'm from the red State Ohio and would probably be shot if I wore that out. Maybe a little less so of late. One would hope these morons would wake up and smell the diaper. I know they drank the Kool Aid....but...
Paranormal John
I know what you're saying about Stillwater. I wonder what church they actually go to. And I imagine that you're right- they probably claim to hate the sin and love the sinner as if that was even possible. Who knows? Maybe I'll convert THEM to the Church of the Batshit Crazy.
DeleteA lot of people don't realize that some of the northern states, in some areas, are every bit as up-Trump's ass as southern states.
I'm from Michigan and I can tell you I've encountered as much racism up there as here in the south.
DeleteHmmm. Don't know about the farm stand, a bit too "Hobby Lobby"? Or is that an extrapolation too far? I bet poll volunteering can be pretty boring so maybe one toke over the line makes sense.
ReplyDeleteCeci
Yeah. I think you're exactly correct about the Stillwater thing.
DeleteI can only imagine that there's a lot of down time being a poll worker in Lloyd, especially for the primaries.
Somehow I reckon the farm shop might fare a little better than the gypsy soul shop. Either way, good luck to them (as long as they don't bible bash when you walk in the shop. I hate that, not that it happens here thank goodness)!
ReplyDeleteAt least people NEED eggs and produce. No one on god's green earth needed what the gypsy soul place was selling.
DeleteI would hope these people know better than to Bible bash. I'll give them one chance and if they do, they'll never see me again.
I followed the link and read about Brad and Meredith who is "detailed" oriented, ha ha, and I see you picked up on the 'whole heartily" (heartedly), still, I hope the shop does well for them.
ReplyDeleteI hope also the missing crow is off doing other things, not injured or worse.
Possibly Maurice dislikes LuLu as much as she does Maurice. If only she could tell you in ways that don't draw blood.
I know. Being a Christian does not guarantee writing or editing skills, does it? Meredith should get on that, seeing as she's the detailed one.
DeleteI am almost certain the other crow has gone off to begin a family of his/her own.
First thing that happened to me on Monday morning was that that dang cat slashed me. I mean...really?
Thanks for that clip from Tarzan. I remember seeing that in an art of film course I took 400 years ago. Of course, she’s naked and he’s wearing that typical, raised-by-apes loin cloth. The farm shop sounds like a great addition except for their extreme lord and savior stuff. That would make me feel immediately judged. I hope they don’t proselytize during business hours. Also, they need to get someone to edit their website. What a mess. Oh, Maurice. Lulu would not do it. Maybe “Your Grace.” Maybe she’s bi-polar. I’m SURE you’re right about the crows, and I love that T-shirt!
ReplyDeleteYeah- what's up with THAT? What's good for the goose is good for the gander or whatever. Why is it so much more salacious to show a man's man parts than it is to show a woman's woman parts?
DeleteBecause women are seen as objects, I assume.
Well, a man of god and a woman who states her love of Jesus before she lists her children may well feel the need to bless their customers with the message of the Bible. Or whatever. I swear to you, though, the next time someone asks me if I have a church, I'm going to say, "Jesus Christ! Oh, GOD, no!" And then I'm going to offer to share the message of Keith Richards, telling them that he has performed many miracles, the main ones being that he hasn't died yet.
What do you think?
You don't think Lulu is the right name? I named her Maurice when I still thought she was a male. Yeah, "Your Grace." She really does have some sort of mental disorder.
Havent been here in years. Seeing that you still post and that this little sanctuary of yours still exists made me so happy! And how big your grands are! most of them were still small babies when I was here last. Back in the days i d come here first in the morning to check on you and your family, the chicken, to see if you posted a picture of a plant or shared a memory. But so many of us left blogland, good to see you are still here. makes me want to read through all your posts I missed out on. big hugs from germany , Danielle ps: love the tshirt
ReplyDeleteDanielle! Welcome home! So nice of you to come for a visit. Things are pretty much the same around here but I no longer keep chickens because of foxes and it breaks my heart. I miss them so.
DeleteIts been forever no? you no longer keep chicken, i no longer write..well thats actually not true, i still write now and then but not the way i (and jo) did back then, more essays and such these days, no more naughty stuff. And yes, I went throught a few of your older posts already, it seems like not much changed in your neck of the woods which actually is lovely and comforting to see.
DeleteI like skinks almost as much as I like anoles. A lot! :) They're just so pretty.
ReplyDeleteI imagine the dreadlocks guy smelling of weed didn't vote R at least! You made me laugh envisioning little old poll worker ladies with white hair slipping outside to take a hasty toke. Ha!
They ARE pretty. I will give you that. Although the ones with the red around their mouths and on their faces that makes them look like they've just eaten something very bloody sort of scare me.
DeleteI swear to you- it smelled so strongly of weed in there that it's hard to believe no one had smoked in that room. That dude's probably been stoned for the last ten years. At least. And yeah, I seriously doubt he voted Republican.
And oh yeah, that website.... holy shit (!) what a mess. I'd bet money Brad and Meredith were homeschooled. And homeschooling, too, come to think of it.
ReplyDeleteYou're probably right about that.
Delete"Talk about being eat-up with Jesus." Hahahahaha -- I've never heard this expression before and man, did it make me laugh! Seems to be entirely accurate too.
ReplyDeleteWe say "eat-up" about a lot of things. It means obsessed. Being eat-up with religion is not uncommon around here.
DeleteI was born in Tennessee, moved to Indiana at age 12 and now in Georgia - transferred for work and stayed after retirement . I am not religious and even with all of the TN history I am still furious about the religion thing. I am agnostic. Yesterday we met with a financial planner that my neighbor recommended. The first thing he said was "do you go to church?" WTF???? I am so tempted to move to the most non religious state I can find but with my somewhat southern accent I would not be understood anywhere else either! Why do we all have to make assumptions about people!! Thanks for letting me vent this morning - I love your blog.
ReplyDeleteVent away, Becks! And yeah, a lot of Christians truly believe it is their mission on earth to spread the gospel of our lord and savior, Jesus H. Christ. And my god it's annoying.
DeleteFeel free to express yourself here anytime you want.
Excellent t-shirt. It always baffles me to what extent people use their religion to explain their business ideas. Does it help, get more customers? It reminds me of a guy from the US who used to visit schools when I was a teenager trying to sell god-approved pop and rock music. We gave him a hard time.
ReplyDeleteAround here they use religion to further their businesses and their political candidacies. All. The. Time.
DeleteThat's hysterical about the US guy trying to sell god-approved pop. I'm glad y'all gave him a hard time.
Yay you all for having voted already! I hope your primary counts for something. I know my former state of NC has a big chance to elect Cooper for a senate seat in Nov, but where I voted had been so gerrymandered (Asheville area) that all Democratic votes didn't count in the long run. I have to learn now what CO is up to. I asked if people were allowed to smoke weed in the smoking area here. The resident I asked said no, but she isn't a smoker. Though it's legal here in CO, I guess there are still restrictions. Will ask my son more about that situation, though I am not interested myself.
ReplyDeleteYou crack me up, Barbara! I wonder what that resident thought when you asked her about the weed in the smoking area. It's a perfectly good question, though. Where else would you smoke it?
DeleteI am so sad that my shirt has yet to arrive. I fear I have been scammed.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I was thinking but then- TA-DA! It just suddenly arrived. Be patient.
DeleteI don't get people who feel the need to shove their religion right up into your face. Why?
ReplyDeleteWeed has been legal for everyone here for awhile. All ages show up in the weed stores, including me. I buy CBD gummies for Miss Katie to decrease her agitation. It seems to help. I've recommended weed gummies to my 79 year old sister for her back pain, she was hit by a rogue wave in Mexico in January and now hates Mexico:) She also lives by the ocean in BC. LOL.
I hope the fifth crow is ok. Crows have a 50% mortality rate in their first year which is shocking. They also live with their parents for a long time and help to raise their siblings. I saw a juvenile not long ago, the same size as it's parents, standing with it's mouth open and basically yelling, feed me.
Hope you had a wonderful day and that t-shirt is perfect:)
If the new shop could provide produce (like Joe's on LS's blog) and leave out all the religion, I am all in. Sadly. Slim chances of that. These folks are devoted.
ReplyDeleteOutstanding t-shirt! Your pottery friends will get a big kick out of it.
Those folks are indeed devoted. And you know what? I seriously doubt their place is going to be anything like Joe's.
DeletePottery friends did indeed like the shirt.
The farm shop might be nice but the religious environment would weird me out. "Grown with purpose"? I wonder what the exclusive proprietary products are gonna be?
ReplyDeleteMedical pot is legal here but they just outlawed some THC products. Weirdly enough though we ordered some buds online that are legal. The package, when it came, had 'this is not marijuana' printed on it. It may not be but it looked and smelled like it, and it gets you high.
Years ago when Mikey borrowed our truck and then hit somebody and we had to have the front replaced, our neighbor Rocky sent up to his brother who would give us a good deal. We're sitting in the office while he worked up a quote and starts going on about religion to us unbelievers (I forget what started him) as we sat there silently not responding until he sort of petered out. Sorry, he said, didn't mean to get into that. Too late, Marc told him. Couldn't get out of there fast enough but he did give us a good deal.
If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck and gets you high like a duck...
DeleteDid you get your medical marijuana card? Glen did.
"Too late, Marc told him!"
Good one, Marc! That made me laugh.
My shirt arrive earlier this week, it is blue and I am so happy to see others enjoying theirs too...
ReplyDeleteSo cool! Glad you got your shirt and like it. Good quality, don't you think?
DeleteWell, I "whole heartedly" heh heh think that's the perfect spot for Lulu! :D And I'll say again, that shirt is awesome. It'll be a blessing wearing it to pottery, as the Lord has ordained. -Nicol
ReplyDeleteYes. The Lord put it on my heart to wear that shirt today. That's a thing people say in the south- "Put it on my heart." When you say that, you can pretty much get away with saying anything to anyone because, you know- the Lord said to do it.
DeleteI absolutely love your T-shirt girlfriend!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, darling!
DeleteThe pottery ladies will love that t-shirt!
ReplyDeleteAnd they did.
ReplyDelete
