It was freaking hot today. And yes, cars get really hot sitting in parking lots. However, when I got in that car after it had been sitting in a parking lot, it was registering 99 degrees. It was 100 after I'd driven it about six miles down the road.
Of course these days, a hundred degrees F is becoming normal for many areas of the world which no one ever would have imagined even ten years ago.
Except the environmental scientists. They knew what was coming.
This morning I was in a low place when I got up. Again, I do not know why. I was so teary and getting these back-to-school photos only made me tearier.
Maggie was going for a sort of school-uniform/anime look.
Success!
August and Levon- this year's hug photo.
I mentioned how much I loved these pictures of them hugging every year and Jessie sent this.
That was five years ago when August was starting kindergarten. Levon was a baby! And August was barely much past the baby stage.
My heart.
So August is going into fifth grade this year, as is Maggie, and Levon is going into the third grade. All of this just seems completely impossible.
By this time, I was ready to text Jessie and Lily and bow out of the pedicure situation but I knew damn well that seeing them was exactly what I needed to do. Forget my toes, my heart needed some tending.
So I met them at the salon and yes, they cheered me right up. I dumped all my woes out as soon as I got there and they just listened and nodded and said things like, "That's hard," and I started feeling better immediately.
And then I picked out the nail polish color I wanted and things got better from there.
Pictures!
We talked about more and more stuff and my technician pretended he was using Harry Potter type magic to make the chair I was sitting in come closer or farther away from him so he could work on my feet more easily. He had a button which was pretty obvious but he was getting a kick out of it. He also said I had long legs which Jessie and Lily refused to believe, which is natural, seeing as how their legs are about fifty feet long but I pointed out to them that for my height (which is becoming less and less every day), my legs ARE pretty long. I am extremely short-waisted.
The guy also said, as he painted my toenails red, the color I had chosen, that I now had sexy toes.
"Something about me needs to be sexy," I said. This, too, amused my children.
Jesus, kids!
Here's a picture of my sexy toes.
The ant bites and veins are especially fetching, are they not?
Lily had errands to run afterwards and leftovers to eat at home but Jessie and I went a few doors down to the noodle place. I like this noodle place but the portions are HUGE. I got a dish called Japchae which is basically stir-fried noodles made with sweet potato starch which somehow magically turn into a sort of clear, stretchy, chewy noodle, with vegetables and chicken. I ate until I could eat no more because it was delicious and brought home enough for at least two more lunches.
Jessie is working tonight, her first shift after getting back from North Carolina, and she needed to get home and take a nap. I drove to the pharmacy where my hormones were ready for pick-up and then came on back to Lloyd. This evening I feel far less like jumping off a bridge and thank goodness.
Glen just got back from Tom's where he and Jim spent the day going through more things and packing some of them up. Some of the things will go to Goodwill or Oak Tree, or some place like that, some will go to the dump, and a few pieces of artwork that could possibly be worth anything of value are going to someone who can appraise them.
This is going on forever, not unlike how long it took for Glen to talk Tom into buying the tiny house after a tree fell on his fifty-year old trailer and then doing all the work of getting it there, hooking it up to water and electricity, and moving Tom into it.
Am I being a little, um, less than graceful about all of this?
You bet!
In fact, Mr. Moon seems to be more cheerful about all of this than I am. Let's face it- he's just a better human being. I have no hesitation in saying that, either. He just is.
A few garden pictures.
The tabasco peppers are still putting forth beautifully. I need to make more pepper sauce.
Bee on basil bloom!
Lucky shot. Look at its eye!
Another photo of the basil flowers. This is the African basil. I think. It's one of those basils.
If I were a bee, I'd be making love to those blooms all day long. Such seductive colors and tendrils and delineated come-hither features. Who could resist? I am still so very, very desirous of tasting honey made from the nectar of basil flowers. I haven't figured out how that's going to happen though. I'll let you know if I do.
Thunder is rolling and lightning is cracking right now. Whether or not we get any rain is still...up in the air.
Jeez. I am so sorry.
But really, I do so hope it does.
And that's my life in Lloyd tonight.
Love...Ms. Moon

The heat is oppressive.... Love you
ReplyDeleteAnd dangerous.
Deletetoo much to process! Grands on first school day wonderful, I think August is going to be as tall as Mr Moon one day soon- he is all arms and legs! Your feet are lovely with so much character. Those peppers....I have never seen *erect* growing peppers such as those LOL and yes those basil flowers are most attractive and bee worthy. We have so many varieties of honey made near us here locally that is is amazing but have never seen basil honey and will research that. Avocado? buckwheat? wildflower? clover? lavender? sage,? yep...we have all those .....stay cool please!
ReplyDeleteSusan M
August is all arms and legs. I believe that Levon will soon be the same.
DeleteYep. That's the way tabasco peppers grow. They make a pretty display, don't they?
We have various types of honey here too but I've never seen a basil.
The only way to stay cool is to stay inside. Which I do not like to do.
Oh shit. Now I want red toenails.
ReplyDeleteBoy, those basil blooms are so pretty. I had no idea. I'm about as vague as a human can get with horticultural. But I sure enjoy your flower pics all the time. Kinda makes me wanna garden....then...there are those red toenails I gotta consider taking care of!
Paranormal John
Paint your toe-nails! Or get them painted. Why should women get all the fun? August and Levon ask their mama to paint their toenails and she does. Vergil's even done it a few times. REAL MEN ARE NOT AFRAID OF NAIL POLISH!
DeleteYour grandchildren are growing up quickly. No more babies. Each child looks happy and healthy and that is most important. Maggie has good fashion taste, and she looks ready for school in her uniform with boots. The boots add a nice twist.
ReplyDeleteYour pepper plant looks like a small tree. My pepper plant grew maybe 10 inches and produced 3 peppers.
Settling an estate is lots of work. Hopefully the financial rewards make it all tolerable.
The boots really do put paid to that outfit, don't they?
DeleteThat is the largest pepper plant I have. The clown pepper is just as big, really. I'm planting more of those next year.
I don't think there are any financial rewards that are going to happen that will make this really fiscally worthwhile. Just two very good men doing their best to fulfill a promise.
A lot to process today. But you did the pedi, so there's that.
ReplyDeleteAnd I got to laugh a lot. And that was the best.
DeleteSome days are just full on, aren't they? But as always, your family and your garden bring some balance to it all.
ReplyDeleteHey. You know that raven shirt? He is holding a coffee mug? Yeah. I bought it for myself, a reward for being so brave at the fair.
Good for you, Debby! I have no idea when my shirt is supposed to arrive. I'd say that I hope it arrives before it's no longer apropos but in this case, I'd be thrilled.
DeleteYour new camera is a show off! those shots of the garden things are reall great.
ReplyDeleteSo are your girls and grands! Fifth grade sounds like "OH NO' but really what I remember about fifth grade is that I was still a baby.
It's so sad to me but when I think of the person I was when I was in fifth grade, I know I felt like an adult with many, many problems and situations I needed to take care of. It makes me feel so sorry for fifth grade Mary. It really does.
DeleteFifth grade Mary survived and thrived, be proud.
DeleteI'm so glad you got to meet up with Jessie and Lily and share your woes with them. That makes a huge difference -- just having people who will listen. Your family is terrific that way! The pics of the grandkids are great, though I confess my eye went right to Ryan Reynolds in that picture of Lily. LOL
ReplyDeleteCan you show us some of the artwork that might be worth something at Tom's? Or would that be an invasion of his privacy? I'm intrigued. I assume they're clearing the trailer, because surely all this stuff couldn't have fit in the tiny house. And what's going to happen to that? I hope it can be resold.
You're so right. And I know that the kids realize that this is just the way I am and I'm not asking them for help or advice, just an ear, and they provide that.
DeleteThere were only two pictures that might possibly have been of any worth and they were done by a local artist who achieved some slight notice. I doubt seriously they are worth more than a few hundred dollars if that. We shall see. The rest were reproductions or Tom's own artwork and things like that.
The tiny house can indeed be sold as it is licensed like a mobile home, not as part of the property. Tom had built sheds to store his things in. That's where all these things were except for a few things that were in his old trailer with the floor broken through and the hole where a tree had fallen through it.
P.S. Of course your eye went straight to Ryan!
DeleteMr. Moon has surely been very good to Tom, over the years and more importantly now! He's a good man. And I can't believe how grown the kids are - especially Levon (and sorry, I know you'll probably hate hearing that)!
ReplyDeleteOh, I know! The children are just flying into being big kids. Well, Owen's already there. And Gibson too, really.
DeleteGlen is indeed a good man.
Great bee photo, although I didn’t linger long. Those daughters of yours make any day better. And those grandkids! Magnolia looks so very cool and beautiful. And I wish the boys would never stop hugging at the start of the school year. I’m so glad you went for the pedicure. Good for you for getting off the ledge (the right way). I was tired of sharing the space with you. Maybe I should get a pedicure... with Lily and Jessie and you! Mr. Moon is something else alright. The world is a better place thanks to people like him.
ReplyDeleteThat bee can't bite you! It could in my garden though. I know you're allergic. They never seem to be bothered by my presence at all. I get right up in their faces.
DeleteLevon and August hug a lot and they are not real huggers except when it comes to Mom and Dad. They DO hug me but it's more of a token this-is-what-you're-supposed-to-do thing rather than an exuberant expression of affection.
Getting off the ledge is a fine thing to do but hey- here- give me your hand and I'll help pull you back too. Oh, if only I could!
You should definitely get a pedicure with me and all the girly-o's. It would probably be worth a trip to Tallahassee just for that. We'd take you to lunch too.
I thought the same thing about Ryan Reynolds and Lily's big smile!
ReplyDeleteWell, in this case, her smile had nothing to do with what was on that screen but after Jessie pointed it out to us, we all laughed.
DeleteI'm glad your girls (and the pedicure) were able to help you feel better, Mary. First day of school photos can cause melancholy, I think. Hope they all have fabulous years!
ReplyDeleteOld pictures can make me feel so sad. Seeing that one of August and Levon five years ago sort of broke my heart. Where did those babies go? I want to smush those babies with my love again.
DeleteSo great to see your grands starting school again. My middle son attended Kate Sullivan his 3rd grade year, and I still have his photo from then! Funny, I don't remember the names of other schools in all the other towns. And next year he turns 60. Well, no wonder my memory is fuzzy!
ReplyDeleteAll my kids went to Kate Sullivan. I spent many years there volunteering. It was very nice community for all of us.
DeleteYeah. Sixty years is a long time to be expected to remember the names of individual schools.
Did Owen and Gibson declined to be photographed? They're growing up so I wouldn't be surprised.
ReplyDeleteNo! They had to get up and be out before it got light!
DeleteI had a few weepy mornings of late - I have a friend who swears by garden therapy. That basil and bee pic does look anti-depressive
ReplyDeleteOh, yes. Garden therapy DOES work. Now if I'd just get up earlier and get out there before it gets so hot I'm risking heat stroke to do anything in it.
DeleteThe Back To School Photos are always touching for Parents and Grandparents. Glad you went for the Pedi, looked like a good time together and joyful. It is too Hot and Triple Digits now do seem to be Normal in places they never were before.
ReplyDeleteI love the red toenails! Mine only ever see moisturiser. I love Lily's owl bag and Maggie's "uniform" too, with boots! 😀 The August and Levon hugs will happen always I think, a family tradition. The one with Levon as a baby just melted my heart.
ReplyDeleteI hope you get some cooling rains soon.
