Less Heat, More Joy

Well if this is September, bring it on, baby! Today was glorious. Little short of perfect, temperature and humidity-wise, at least. No clouds in the entire sky until just a few hours ago and they are the most innocent and delicate of clouds, like wispy bits of stretched cotton.

But it was so nice this morning and I feel so much better that I decided to take a walk. I've been deathly afraid to do anything that might jolt that kidney stone into a bad place but it has become noticeably less present in the last few days so I risked it. And the walk made me so happy. I mean, I actually enjoyed it.

First off, these are blooming again.

I know. I know! I post pictures of these every year but every year they make me happy all over again. They make me especially happy because they are not growing on MY fence in MY yard because guess what?
Yes. They are invasive.
But I love the way they look like bright jewels on their green backgrounds, such perfect little red stars.

I risked walking through poison ivy to take a few close-up pictures of the fally-down house.

It has not yet fallen to flatness, but it is definitely laying down. It is weary. I will always wonder about this place with its wallpapered rooms and who lived there and what their lives were like.

So obviously, I was much cheered today and that has made such a difference. I shelled peas, I played piano. I've looked at recipes for boiled tofu. Have you ever boiled your tofu? I've been reading about it and it seems like an interesting way to prepare it. Supposedly, boiling tofu in salt water actually draws out the moisture and has other magical properties but there seems to be great confusion as to exactly how this is done. The recipe I originally looked at today which inspired me to try this calls for the tofu to be boiled for twenty minutes in salt water. Or simmered. Other recipes say 5-10 minutes. Some say that anything over two minutes makes the tofu...something. I don't know. And some recipes call for not boiling it all, but merely pouring boiling water over it.
To add to all of this, you can pat your boiled tofu dry, top it with some sauce, and eat it as is. OR, you can dry it off and fry it or bake it or however you like to make your tofu crispy. So I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do with my tofu tonight but it will involve boiling because...what the heck?
Live dangerously, right?

God. I remember when I used to experiment with drugs. Now I experiment with tofu. I suppose this is a good thing.

Mr. Moon seems to be fine and well. He made it to Canada and when he called me early this afternoon, they were packing up to head to "the cabin". Men just do love a cabin, don't they?

I began rewatching "The Phoenician Scheme" while I was shelling peas. I said I wanted to rewatch it and I wasn't kidding. I am enjoying it as much or more the second time around. I'm catching things I missed, I'm admiring the performance of Benicio del Toro and Mia Threapleton even more the second time around. You know me- I hate to catch an actor acting but it's an entirely different ball game in a Wes Anderson movie. They all have that rather playful atmosphere which doesn't actually try to mimic real life. It represents a slightly different world, I think. A fairy-tale world, a fantastical world, a world where the sets and the costumes are as much a part of the mood and feel of the movie as the actors and script. In his best movies, they all come together to form a whole which doesn't try to be realistic in the understood definition of the word, but manages to offer a clear picture we can all understand of the world which Anderson has created and it is very, very human.
I almost feel like it's Shakespearian. Stylized and dramatized and no one makes movies like he does.

Well. Good god. Where did all that come from? I don't review movies. I have no idea what I'm talking about! It's just all my personal opinion.

It's supposed to get down to 65 degrees tonight. DID YOU HEAR ME? That's 18.3333 Celsius! Unbelievable. There may be another walk in my future tomorrow.

In an unrelated topic, I decided to try and figure out how old Maurice is, approximately, by doing some research on my blog. Here is the very first picture taken here of our satanic familiar, our perpetually unpredictable and anxious Maurice.

That was in 2014 and she looks like a teenager there. So she's at least eleven years old. She was already smart enough to know who to charm. She knew she had me by the second day she showed up.
Okay. The first day. I fed her venison vegetable soup. Of course she was never leaving.
And let me just say- Glen hasn't changed an iota. What the hell?

Here's a picture of the Weatherfords at Santa Rosa beach, which they are just now leaving.

Oh, sigh.
I want to go to the beach now.

Maybe soon. Maybe soon.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. The Weatherfords are clearly having a fabulous time. What a wonderful pic/memory. Those red flowers are super pretty. Fally down house is definitely down. Hopefully you did not get poison ivy! :-) My neighbor planted an invasive plant on the fence and told me afterwards (some kind of clematis-a white small one), but I freaking love it. It's blooming right now. But, boundaries. :D Maurice looks like a baby-teen in that pic. She won the lottery-that girl. 'Royal Tenenbaums' was a GREAT movie. I don't know a lot about his work, but I loved that movie. Glad your stone is settling down! Love that you had a great day. :-) -Nicol

    1. So funny, too, about tofu. I usually bake mine, but today made red Thai curry tufu soup and just chopped it up after paper-toweling it to get the water out. It was kind of boiled in the soup. I actually love tofu in different forms. Go crazy and boil it. 😋 I bet it’ll be great. -Nicol

    2. Fally down house is like the guy at the bar who was overserved and is leaning on it and barely staying upright. It won't be long before the legs come out from under it.
Oh yes, your tofu definitely got boiled.

  2. That red flower whatever it is, is lovely, glowing away there. What a relief to have temperatures you can walk in. Such a good day.

    -EEES?

  4. Annual post of the crazy beautiful red star flower is welcomed! It looks oddly fake. maurice was once a kitten... fresh fur that did not stab you. Worth remembering.
The sky over you was certainly charming today as is the fally down house. I sometimes feel like her.

    1. It does look fake, doesn't it?

    2. Also, I should go back and see when it was she started the stabbing.
I have wondered if, when the fally down house completely collapses, I'll do the same.

  5. I like tofu too but have only ever had it air fried, so you'll have to let us know how it goes. Oh and I'm glad you're feeling a little better today. The weather (and kidney stones) can sure do a number on us, can't they!

    1. As far as I could tell, the boiling did very little. But it didn't hurt it!

  6. Boiled tofu? I don't even buy tofu. It's a soy product and my system doesn't like soy very much. I've had to give up several favourite foods because the manufacturing companies have sold out quality for profits and now use cheaper soy and rice ingredients instead of whatever they used before. They make me queasy and they seem tasteless to me.
I would LOVE an 18C overnight, we currently are suffering through 7C or 8C, but it is spring here now so the nights have to get warmer, right? Days are certainly more delightful once the early morning nippiness passes.

    1. Well, there is no doubt that boiling tofu is not in your future!
I love that it's spring for you. We are certainly on opposite ends of the earth.

  7. I don't know why you're having cooler weather than us. Our lows are hovering in the low 70s. I like tofu but Marc doesn't, says it gives him an upset stomach. The fact is he unknowingly eats it in many products and doesn't get an upset stomach. I guess it's psychosomatic or perhaps it's the quantity.

Oh look, we are reading each others blogs at the very same time.

    1. I realize frequently that Steve and I are commenting on each others' blogs at the same time. It is funny.
Glen doesn't seem to have digestive issues with tofu but he really only eats it when I make eggrolls.

  8. I'm glad your weather has cooled and you got out for a walk. I also love that photo of your daughter and her family, it looks like a wonderful place to spend some time. Those boys are growing so fast.
We had cooler weather yesterday and today, but the smoke has moved in. Sigh. Canada is still burning.
I'm taking Jack to the doctor this morning to see if he has asthma. We just had a long weekend, so of course he was sick:) My husband and I had a long talk yesterday which was good. Both of us have such a hard time communicating with each other and having a six year old makes it even harder. We're tired basically, but we love Jack and want to give him a good life. On that we agree.

    1. Those beaches on that part of the Gulf (of MEXICO!) are truly gorgeous. They make the "best beaches" list every year.
Canada is still burning? Are you getting a lot less rain than usual in the past few years?
Jack may well have asthma and it would be good to know if he does.
Glen and I could do a lot better at communication. You'd think after forty years we'd have this shit figured out but, no. Not always. Not really. So good for you for talking.

  10. Glad you have been having some nice weather. We have, too.
Jessie and her family look so great on that beach.
Happy to hear that you are feeling better. Keep it up! ;)

    1. So true. It's usually a very hard month here. Hot as August and with one hurricane or another forming in the gulf, looking to head our way. Knock wood for this year.

  12. That water at the beach looks so amazing. So clear.

I'm glad you're getting some cooler temperatures. I've made a lot of tofu dishes in my time but I don't think I've ever boiled it -- at least not that I can remember. Seems like it would be bland, but I'm keeping an open mind!

I love those red flowers. I'm sure you've identified them in the past but I can't remember what they are. Not something I ever recall seeing during my years in Florida.

    1. The water really is that clear. The tofu recipe I saw about boiling also gave a recipe for a garlic/soy/sesame sauce to put on it. So I think that was the saving grace.
Cardinal vine! I don't know why I didn't remember to name them. I'd never seen them either until I moved to Lloyd.

  13. Cool weather is ideal. We are also cool.
Santa Rosa beach with white sand and turquoise/blue waters and no crowds looks pretty outstanding. Now I want to go to that beach too.
The appeal of a deep woods hunting cabin is hard especially for women. My aunt and her 2nd husband lived in such a cabin on the ME-Canada border. They sold a fully restored antique farmhouse in ME to pursue a dream. They were self-sustaining. They did this for a few years, then made the place a second home and built a home on land they owned in ME closer to civilization and their children from all previous marriages.
Tofu is somewhat foreign to me as baked meatloaf tofu is my only experience, and it was just ok.
The tiny star-like red flowers are beautiful. I might be tempted to take a small cutting.

    1. Oh my word. You will never find me living in a cabin on the Canadian border. Were they off the grid? Oh hell no. But good for them! Now they know they can which is pretty cool.
I had never heard of meatloaf tofu. Dang. Did the kind you ate have meat in it too?

      Delete
    2. Yes, they were off the grid. I chose not to visit it was all too rustic for me. They had hunting stories to tell when they came to my home for the holidays. Uncle John brought his homemade "critter stew" for a starter. People paled looking into their bowls, all likely seeing bunnies, ducks, possums, deer... While John announces, "it's delicious!"
There was no meat in the tofu meatloaf and it was smothered in tomato sauce. All I tasted was tomato, onion and garlic.
