I have no pictures to offer from today so I'll give you this one which I took last week when we were at the nursery. This is a pink wild azalea in full bloom. I seriously doubt either one of my two will ever look like that but as I recall, last year's bloom of the flame azalea I planted years ago had more flowers than I'd ever seen on it so maybe it will be even better this year. There used to be a flame azalea planted very near here on part of the yard of a house that had been unoccupied for a long time which had grown up into weeds but every spring that azalea bloomed and was beautiful. Then the damn Methodist church who owned the property decided to turn the old house into offices and cut down everything in the yard, including that azalea.
I will never not be pissed off about that. They probably didn't even know it was there and I wonder if they would have cared if they had. But that yard is sure neat and tidy these days.
It was raining hard when I got up and then it rained even harder. We got thunder and lightning and a tornado warning but I don't think there were any actual tornados reported. The power went out, as it generally does during a storm, and although the generator kicked in the way it's supposed to, it soon cut back off with great sounds of pops and backfires. Glen looked at it but it was still raining and lightning and so he closed it up and came back inside and the power company did get us all hooked back up relatively soon.
All I can say is- he better get thing fixed, sooner rather than later.
As I laid in bed this morning, enjoying the sound of the rain and the coolness of the air coming in through the window above my head, I thought about the fact that I could take a day off of doing yard work without any guilt. I imagined knitting or mending or even working on that jigsaw puzzle which I doubt I will finish before I die, no matter how many years I have left.
And I did finally sit down in front of the TV and work on a shirt I've been patching for well over a year while I finished watching the movie "Blue Moon" which I'd started a few nights ago. I was interested in it because Ethan Hawke played the main character, Lorenz Hart, he of the Rogers and Hart duo. Almost the entire movie was set in a bar where Hart had gone to get a drink which he felt he dearly needed after watching the play "Oklahoma" which had been written by Richard Rogers, his writing partner of 25 years, with Oscar Hammerstein.
Not a movie for those who crave action, excitement, broad comedy or romance come to fruition. It is a movie for those who like dialogue, excellent acting, good writing, and true stories about real people which can often include deeply unrequited love.
Needless to say, I am having some major anxiety and am still not certain about the "pretty dress" that I am supposed to wear at this event.
Both Jessie's and Lily's families are on vacation.
Jessie, Vergil, August and Levon made it safely to the campground where they are staying in their new camper. Here are a few pictures she sent me.
And finally, a few pictures May shared with the group of her and Michael's 10th anniversary trip to Savannah.
But those are many of my babies and I love to see them all having fun.
I've made a soup which is appropriate as the temperature is dropping like a stone in a deep, cold well. I felt the need to deal with some leftovers in the refrigerator. I can only describe it as chicken/red lentil/many vegetables soup. I also attempted to make Boud's beautiful baguettes but once again, my bread has failed. Well, not in the sense that I burned it up or it's inedible but in the sense that my baguettes are rather flat. Not enough flour, I am thinking. I do not really know.
And it makes me so happy to think of my grands at Weeki Wachee. Here's a link to a trip I took down there with May, Lily, Owen, and Very Young Gibson.
Sigh.
But I am glad there will be for the grandchildren. It's somewhat crazy and quite wonderful that my children still love Weeki Wachee so much that they will take their own children to bask in the mermaid magic.
Love...Ms. Moon

Mermaid Maggie! 💗 How does it take more than a year to patch a shirt? Does it need plenty of patches or do you stitch a bit then keep setting it aside? I know I would be wanting the shirt to be wearable again as soon as possible. Do you think it might be time to get a new generator? How old is the current one?
ReplyDeleteWe only camped a half dozen times before i knew it was not for me. I did all the work. Camp without me or we’re going to a motel. Nothing fancy like an AirBNB in those days. Chronic pain is no joke! I hope Rachel’s Dr.’s have the magic touch.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the holiday photos- I need those! Cooped up in the house for too long. Quietly losing my mind and cheerful disposition.
ReplyDeleteFamily week on Orcas Is. is when I stay home to get things done., blissfully ALONE. Going to the cabin on Orcas is too much work! Like camping. You could wear a garbage bag to the "do" and look fabulous so no worries about the pretty dress thing!
I'm looking forward to seeing "Blue Moon," so I'm happy to hear you loved it and recommend it. And I must confess that, gawd above, I HATE friggin "Oklahoma!" and agree with Hart's statement that none of the characters are recognizable as human beings.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the ambient humidity is what happened to your baguette?
ReplyDeleteI seem to remember going to weekie watchee springs on a long ago Florida trip. In the dino era.
I rudely forgot to thank you for the shoutout, with the right link and everything!
DeleteYou have a most wonderful family! (I may have mentioned that before.) My father wanted to rent a cabin (in a development with other cabins, pools, etc.) when we were kids. He also wanted to buy a camper. My mother refused because she said it would be a vacation for everyone but her. She’d still be cooking and cleaning.
ReplyDeleteLove the mermaid Maggie will get to see the real mermaid show at Weeki Wachee! I like the idea of different pretty dresses to choose from! Don't fret about it...your smile will be what everyone sees! I camped with my kids all the time (in FL mostly) in tents then in our camper-van. I kind of enjoyed living the more primitive life-style with nature all around us day and night...away from most of the civilized noise unless campground neighbors brought radios or TVs.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't camp at all when the kids were small -hubby liked his creature comforts too much. My first camping trip was tent camping after I was divorced and I HATED it. Significant other bought a 20 ft 20 yr old Airstream and we used that while we were together. I still did all the cooking all the meals and cleaning . On a trip to the Upper Peninsular in October one year my only request was a local fish dinner with beautiful lake trout. Except we were there after tourist season and all the local restaurants were closed. My fish dinner ended up at Red Lobster in Lansing on the way home with fish imported from who knows where.
ReplyDeleteWe did take our girls to see the mermaids many many moons ago. They are now collecting pensions and being Canadian don't do America anymore..last time I did was when I took my grandson to Disney when he was 10. He is now 29 and travelling all over the world but not to America..he just had a 33 hour trip from Bali to Argentina. He had to change his flights because of frumps stupid war. The plane had to divert to Uganda for fuel as there is becoming a shortage. Trumps ignorance and stupidity astounds me. The people who voted him in are just the same. Sorry for venting. Gigi
ReplyDeleteI remember that wild azalea. People who clear cut don't care what's growing. We watched Low Down and enjoyed it. Maybe one of your old dresses you love then will be the right one. Fun to see the fam on vacation.
ReplyDeleteYour family looks to be having a good time. Traveling and choosing adventure makes a good get-away from the humdrum of daily life. I hope Jessie enjoys camping as it can be lots of work.
ReplyDeleteMaggie mermaid is looking very happy. The pool and sunshine look glorious.
You and Mae exchanging dresses to provide more options is a great idea.
When in doubt about an outfit, I choose a favorite solid color dress and add a lightweight jacket topper in a colorful pattern or contrasting color to the solid color. Then add a piece of jewelry. Feeling comfortable is key.
It is sunny in MA but freezing with wind.
I didn't like camping because you have to do everything that you usually do for kids, but without the amenities. Cooking and cleaning still need to be done, as well as laundry. No thanks.
ReplyDeletePerhaps camping without children might be fun but I'll never know:)
I'm glad you got to talk to May and that she has some dresses that may work for you. Quit worrying about the dress though, nobody will care about your dress, they'll just want to see you. I know, I'm full of shit because I obsessed about a dress for my niece's wedding, so don't listen to me. But I'm sure that whatever you wear, you will look lovely.
Today it's 60F and I'm going for a long walk with the dogs.
I'm also going to look for that movie, sounds like my kind of movie.
I loved "Destination Wedding" with Keanu Reeves, mostly dialogue and funny.
