This Is Us

Christmas/Easter cactus which I thought was on its way out (and it may be) blooming in the morning sun.
I mean...those blooms are like neon. They shout at me.
"Hello! Hello! We are here!"
And I whisper back, "Oh. You most definitely are."

Glen asked Owen and Gibson to come over this evening to help him install some cabinets in the garage. Maggie wanted to come too.
Dinner, of course, would be involved.
So they are all here and I, being an idiot, told Maggie when she called to ask if Xena-Marge could come too, "Of course!"
Haha!
You haven't lived until a puppy the size of an adult Labrador has gotten itself wedged behind a love seat in the library trying to get away from an insane spitting cat hiding under a table. What fun! I could NOT coax or pull that poor dog out and I surely was not going to come anywhere near touching Maurice.
I may have a death wish but I do not wish to die by cat attack.

Bless Maggie. She got the dog out from behind the couch and has taken her into the Glen Den. I've got a giant pot of chicken stew simmering and am about to make dumplings. The kiddos say they are excited.

I brought in the porch plants I'd taken outside except for three extra-large ones that I have just covered up. I'm going to be pissed as hell (at myself) if they die in this freeze after having them safely inside until just a few weeks ago.

And it has been a good day. I met Jessie in town as we both needed to do Costco and Publix and of course we had to get lunch. Her best friend from way, way back is newly pregnant for the first time which has Jessie all aflutter. The friend lives an ocean and a continent away and Jessie plans to go be with her when she has the baby if she can. And of course all of this led us to discussing childbirth and nursing and babies and doctors and midwives and all the stuff we love to talk about. And then we stopped by Lily's work to visit with her and do the shopping we needed to do there.

******************
Supper was good. Perhaps the best chicken and dumplings I ever made. No one complained. Many subjects were discussed at the table and it was just pretty sweet.
Owen cleared the table and got the bowls and spoons put into the dishwasher. And I made everyone pose for a hallway selfie that Mr. Moon took.

Maggie will be taller than me in a nap's worth of time.

I can't believe how fast they're growing, how incredibly smart they are, how kind they are, how they listen, and how gracefully they show their love.

And then Owen drove them home!

As I have said so many times, I am the luckiest woman in the world. And I damn well know it.

Azaleas.

We shall see how they look tomorrow.
There will be burrowing under the duck tonight.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. That’s such a good picture of you all. Your grandkids are growing up so much!

The puppy is precious! Maurice cracks me up, but no need to pick on a baby canine. :-)

I have googled how to make dumplings and I know you’ve said it’s easy, but it intimidates me!

    1. Maurice doesn't need a reason for anything.
My dumplings are so easy. Nothing at all to be intimidated about.

  2. Poor Xena. There is nothing so scary as a pissed off cat.
Your grands are getting so big. I'm glad you guys all had a nice visit, despite Maurice.

  5. Stands to reason that such a tall family would have a big dog!

  7. My, my...just look at those sweet smiling faces! I can't believe Owen is almost as tall as his Bop. AND he helped with kitchen clean-up. AND he's driving. Lord it seems impossible that he is the same darling child sitting in his stroller eye-balling Elvis... that was just a few short years ago, Right? Time just marches on...as it should.
Just a word of caution, you might want to remove that decorative foil from the Christmas cactus. I have found they really do not like it and have almost lost a few before I became aware that it is bad for them. Something to do with air circulation and preventing proper drainage which can lead to root rot.
A bowl of chicken dumpling stew sure would hit the spot on this cold evening. I know yours was delicious.

    1. Owen's turning out all right. I mean- he's a teenager but I like the teenager he is.
I took that foil off. I knew I should. I just hadn't. I think I've been afraid to even touch the plant for fear it'll stop blooming.

  10. Your family is so wonderful…and that’s a great shot of you all and the kids. Thanks Angie for telling me about the cactus and foil wrap! I never knew. That pup is really wild for visiting!

    1. I will want to repot that cactus after it blooms but that will probably kill it dead for sure. I did take the foil off.
This was only the second house Xena has ever been in! So she did pretty good for that.

  11. I would wonder how you make your dumplings. Are they flat thick noodle like structures, or fluffy loose biscuit dough sitting on top of the stew mixture. I made some chicken and dumplings for dinner one time when son Tom and wife Julie came for dinner. He commented upon arriving how much he was looking forward to Mom's chicken and dumplings and then when I served dinner, he said this isn't how you used to make them. They were noodles. I told him he must have been remembering somebody else's mother's chicken and dumplings all these years, because this is always how I had made them, Wonder whose other table he had been sitting at where the dumplings were so good he had remembered them from his childhood and they WEREN''T mine. i.ese

    1. Oh my god. What a story. Just goes to show you how we can't always trust a memory. I make fluffy dumplings that simmer on top of the stew. Like you do.

  12. Chicken and dumplings sounds like the perfect dish to make for cold weather. I have to check out how to do that as I can't remember ever making that, although I'm pretty sure my Mom did...
    Wonderful photo and lovely blooms!

  13. Looks like the Stones OKd use of their music in the Melania film. Bummer.

    1. Nope.
"The Rolling Stones did not personally okay the use of their music for the 2026 Melania documentary. The film features the song "Gimme Shelter," but because it was recorded before 1971, the band does not own the rights to the track, allowing it to be licensed through rights holders without their direct approval."

  14. I love chicken and dumplings. I never make it, have never made it. It just seems so...undoable. I know, it's probably easy. the closest i ever came was chicken soup with matzo balls and those came from a mix.

It's been cold here, in the 40s at night but (fingers crossed) I don't think it's going to F word (don't want to invoke the gods) again.

And yeah, the grands grow up so fast. My youngest turned 25 last Friday. How did that happen?

    1. Oh Ellen, you could make chicken and dumplings any night of the week.
I'm not even sure it froze here last night. I haven't really made a survey of the yard but I think we got off lightly.
      How DID that happen, Ellen?

  15. There is nothing better than a family dinner. Your chicken and dumplings sound delicious.
It seems like the wonderful Large Marge knew to keep her distance from the tigress Maurice. The couch worked as a good barrier. She is a smart gentle giant puppy. Maggie knows how to cajole Marge. Yay! Maggie to the rescue.

  17. LOL -- Maurice may never forgive you! Not that you'll be able to tell.

I'm impressed that Maggie was able to get that dog out from behind the couch. Clearly the dog trusts her.

Those ARE very neon red cactus blossoms -- more red than any of mine. I'll have to get a cutting next time I come visit! I hope your plants pull through -- if they're covered the chances seem good.

    1. You are so right about Maurice. She seemed to chill out as soon as she knew Xena was gone.
I think at this point, Maggie and Xena are siblings.
I'd gladly give you the whole plant if you visit, Steve! You know that.
