This morning started off with a bit of a shock because when I woke up I saw that I'd gotten a text message and two calls from the guy who was coming to do the AC maintenance check. I knew he was coming this morning sometime but before nine?
Good Lord!
So I called him back and he said, "Well, actually, I'm here now."
All righty then!
I was already dressed and so forth and went to the kitchen door which everyone uses and yes, there he was. I let him in to show him where the thermostat was and then took him to the back porch to show him where the unit was.
The guy appeared to be about the same age as Owen and I feel sure he has not achieved his full growth yet. However, he had a lot of tattoos and seemed to be very, very shy. At one point he came onto the porch where I was and with his fingertips all touching in front of his chest, he said, "Would you mind if I used your bathroom?" I swear to you, I felt like that might have been the most difficult thing he'd ever done in his life.
Well of course I said I wouldn't mind at all and I showed him where it was.
He soon told me that everything looked good on the AC and I paid him and off he went.
I took a little walk and it was hot enough to qualify as torture. I stopped by the Post Office and Ms. T, the post mistress, was wearing a "vintage" Rolling Stones T-shirt. I was so delighted. "I love your shirt!" I said.
She grinned and said "Thank you." I wonder if she's ever heard one Rolling Stone song in her entire life.
Came home, cooled off a little, went back outside to the garden and picked more beans and more tomatoes, one okra, one pepper and some arugula along with Mexican and Thai basil. Also zinnias.
Came in and cooled down again, ate lunch, thought about things and decided that I might as well can some more green beans and so I did. Three quarts, one pint.
I missed Lis.
I have got to reorganize and clean my pantry because space for jars is getting scarce. I have realized though, that the shelves I have in the kitchen which I've never quite known what to do with, work perfectly for storing canned goods.
And other things.
This does NOT mean, however, that the pantry doesn't need organizing and cleaning. For example- I have one small bin which holds nothing but different sorts of packing and duct tape. One that holds batteries. One that holds extension cords.
Are these things supposed to go in a pantry? I think not. Where else they'd go is a mystery, however, so for now, I'll probably just try and cull some of the tape, batteries, and extension cords.
I picked more figs today and watered the porch plants. And the potted plants in the back yard, one of which is this giant begonia.
One of my most favorite plants. That's a very young leaf. As they mature, they get greener and lose the red delineation of the veins but boy, they sure are beautiful in that stage of growth.
Mr. Moon has had a very productive day. First I got this picture.
"Wallpaper coming down!" he said.
I answered, "Thank god."
And then this.
He took out the nasty center island with the two burners and a griddle (how many pancakes does one need to make?) and also the cabinets where the new stove will sit. It opens up the space so much that I might be able to breathe in there now as well as being able to open the refrigerator.
So that's all good. And please know- he did this all by himself. He said the hardest part was taking off the kitchen door so that he could get all that stuff out of the house.
That man.
Jessie sent this picture.
Mama bear and a cub, strolling down the road, as one does.
And Lily sent this one which is what she found on her bed when she got home from work.
I love that Maggie still plays with her dolls, not unlike her Mermer.
So that is my world for today. I am a bit grief-stricken to report that I have not seen Hawk in days. I feel an unexpected sadness that my sharp-eyed, sharp-taloned protector is not with me in the gloaming but a hawk has its own thoughts about territory and I have appreciated his presence for the time he spent here.
Tonight- salad with everything including seared tuna and of course...miso dressing.
I better go start chopping, mincing, slicing, and searing.
Love...Ms. Moon
I see 2 cubs in that picture ... there is one cub sniffing the grass or bush while Mama and the other cub just kept walking on!
ReplyDeleteGlen will get the "cabin" to where you will love it!
Salad for supper here, too!
Of course. TWO cubs.
DeleteGlen sure is working hard at it.
You have separate bins for cords, tapes and batteries? Ye gods, woman. So organised.
ReplyDeleteThe new house is coming along well. Once the old owners have been exorcised I am sure you will make your mark on it.
It's not really very organized at all. Those bins are clusterfucks in and of themselves.
DeleteI'm hoping for a time I like to stay in the cabin.
Both of you got lots done today. I see two cubs.
ReplyDeleteYes. Two.
DeleteThe doll photo is adorable. How did Jesse get the bear picture? Looks close to where she was. So adorable all of it. Babies everywhere-on the bed and in the street.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure where she took the bear picture from but I doubt it was very far away. The bears just free range it up there. Vergil's sister has chased them out of her house.
DeleteFilling your pantry with veggie garden goodness has to be very satisfying and it sounds like you've found space for more. The garden keeps on giving.
ReplyDeleteYou must be pleased with the cabin transformation. Nice work.
Mama bear taking a walk with her cubs is adorable. Jessie must have used her camera zoom feature to get such a good photo.
I don't know how far away Jessie was when she got the mama and cubs picture.
DeleteThe garden does keep on giving and I am so very glad to take what it gives.
Well I'd comment about the cubs but others have already done so. So I'll note that the zinnia is gorgeous and you've found a great use for those shelves. I have some shelves like those, but no canning going on here, thus mine store an assortment of worthless junk.
ReplyDeleteMy shelves used to be where the kitchen toys were- that is toys the kids could play with while I was cooking when they were here. They were so young then.
DeleteWOW I have NEVER seen such a leaf! Jurassic park Begonia! YAY Glenn! What a worker bee he is! The kitchen is looking more reasonable for sure! PTL there is hope!
ReplyDeletemaybe Hawk flew too close to the sun...Sorry it is gone.
Damn, Linda Sue. I just looked up giant leaf begonias and there are some amazing begonias out there! Not just the ones I'm familiar with but so many I'd love to GET familiar with.
DeleteGlen sure is a worker bee. You set that man on a task he wants to do and there will be no stopping him until he is done.
I wonder what happened to the hawk. Maybe busy nesting.
ReplyDeleteMr M is certainly industrious.
I just feel like maybe Hawk wasn't seeing much of culinary interest from his perch in my back yard. I'd love to see him come back.
DeleteMr. Moon is a man whose motto is, "No hill for a stepper."
When I was working and our office was a couple miles from the edge of town surrounded by crop fields I would count the number of hawks on the poles on my way to work each day. If I saw 5 or more I would think, thats a good day. One day I counted 17 and was astonished. I said to myself must have been an hawk convention today! I would also say good morning to the snowy egret that was in the same general area most mornings and some days there would be a blue heron as well. I would say oh you have company today. Just a little way to keep myself amused driving over the same roads day after day. lol!
ReplyDeleteBirds are indeed magical, aren't they? I love the way you noticed and noted them.
DeleteI would leave the tapes and batteries and cords where they are unless you really need the room. As soon as you move them you'll need them and maybe not remember where you put them. When I used to have a linen closet the bottom shelf was dedicated to baskets of stuff like that
ReplyDeleteIt just all looks so messy.
DeletePacking items, tape, and batteries go in desk and office drawers wherever they fit. Everyone knows that … or at least I do. Already a huge improvement at the cabin! So satisfying. I’m in awe of Mr. Moon.
ReplyDeleteWell, we only have one desk and it's in a separate part of the house and is already filled up with Glen's paperwork. So that's not going to happen. But I really do want to figure something out. I've been having to put boxes of canning jars on the floor in the pantry and there ain't that much floor!
DeleteI'm in awe of Glen too. When I first met him and he moved in with me (approximately the same week) he said he'd like to build a fence around the back yard and before I knew it, he'd built a fence around the back yard. A real fence. I was mind-boggled.
Ilove how you eat so healthy
ReplyDeleteI try!
DeleteThe status of the kitchen is ok the way it is…a dishwasher and no stove! Of course I have similar cooking things on counter top, but sigh, no dishwasher! Some color too will be nice!
ReplyDeleteOh, you know me. I have to have a stove. No way around it.
DeleteI was grocery shopping yesterday and there was an older south Asian woman there with her son. She was looking at and checking out the okra, which reminded me of you. The okra did not look very good and I got the feeling she was used to much fresher produce than you find in northern Alberta. She didn't buy any.
ReplyDeleteIt was hot as hell here yesterday so I slept in the basement with Jack.
Mr. Moon knows you well, he knows you need a good kitchen. Are the cabinets being replaced, or painted? I do like the window in front of the sink. I like a window to look out of while I'm doing the dishes.
Love the photo of the bears that Lily sent you. I love mama bears:)
Okra grows fast and can go bad fast. Also, if it's not picked early enough, there is not enough cooking in the world that will soften it enough to eat. I feel sorry for that woman looking for fresh okra in Canada.
DeleteI'm glad you have a cool basement to sleep in.
The cabinets are going to be left as they are, I think. They're decent cabinets, although dated. I just don't want to ask Glen to paint them. He's already got too much on his plate. Maybe later.
That window looks out on the carport.Of course. So if there are cars parked there (which there will be), I'll mostly be looking at them. Dammit.
I think they have a few resident bears up on the mountain where they are.
I think I would paint the ceiling except for the beams, also the cabinets. nd what are those spikes sticking out of the beams? Looks ready made for you to hang wonderfully weird stuff from. And the flooring is gone unless it was always concrete. So progress!
ReplyDeleteI have a bookshelf in my workroom that has big plastic bins on it, one of which holds all the different glues and tapes I have.
I'm not going to ask Glen to paint either the cabinets or the ceiling. In fact, I would not ALLOW him to paint the ceilings where they are so high. He is going to sheet rock the bedroom, I think and I am glad of that.
DeleteThe kitchen had some sort of fake tile or something linoleum. The whole downstairs floor is cement.
TWO cubs!
ReplyDeleteHawk may still be out and about. Let's hope so.
I am amazed at Glen's energy levels. I don't think I could do all that work.
I sure would love to welcome Hawk back.
DeleteYes. Glen just works himself to death and then when he comes home and finally sits down in his chair, he can't figure out why he keeps falling asleep.
I wish I had a wife who cooked the delicious meals you do.
ReplyDeleteI don't know. Lately my meals have not been that delicious.
Deletedon't recall original pics of the cabin kitchen.....so not sure why center island *nasty* to you LOL!!!!!!!!! I believe you have a center island now in Lloyd....yes? But...space *may* be at a premium in the cabin....and I know Mr Moon will do anything needed to make it workable and pleasing to you!
ReplyDeleteSusan M. and that begonia leaf is gorgeous! I cannot grow them here.
The center island was falling apart and it had a sort of cooking arrangement on it with two electric burners and a griddle which is not what I need to cook on. I do have a sort of island in this kitchen and we may end up getting one there eventually.
ReplyDeleteI grow my begonias in pots as they do freeze in winter.
Mr. Moon seems to be having such Fun remodeling that Cabin and he's doing a good job of it all by himself, bravo. I like those little built-in Shelves in your Kitchen and they do make a fine display of your Canning bounty. That Begonia Leaf is Beautiful.
